Opportunity lost and found

ALBANY, New York – Four days after World Heavyweight Champion Edge announced his shocking retirement from WWE, The Rated-R Superstar officially surrendered the World Heavyweight Championship. And Christian honored his lifelong friend by capturing the opportunity to face No. 1 contender Alberto Del Rio for the vacant World Title at Extreme Rules.

Christian triumphed in a No. 1 Contender’s World Heavyweight Championship Battle Royal
With Alberto Del Rio sitting ringside, Christian heroically outlasted 19 other Superstars to become his aristocratic adversary’s opponent in a Ladder Match at Extreme Rules that will decide the next World Heavyweight Champion. As Captain Charisma battled former World Champion Jack Swagger in the final moments of the mega Battle Royal, Del Rio grabbed Christian’s ankle, trying to eliminate the former ECW Champion from outside the ring. Aggressively freeing himself from his interfering foe, Christian lowered the ropes, sending the charging All-American American crashing down to his defeat. As the smoke cleared, Edge himself emerged to congratulate his former tag team partner on his monumental accomplishment. The intense Battle Royal also saw WWE Tag Team Champion Justin Gabriel eliminate fellow Corre member Wade Barrett – just moments after they worked together to get rid of the monstrous Kane. Although he started strong by eliminating three Superstars, Big Show’s momentum sent both him and Ezekiel Jackson over the ropes and out of contention. And Rey Mysterio eliminated his bitter adversary Cody Rhodes, shortly before Michael Cole sacrificed his body to The Ultimate Underdog’s 619 in order to save his Extreme Rules tag team partner Jack Swagger from taking the hit.

Kelly Kelly def. Layla
Despite a tumultuous session of “couples counseling,” a noticeably annoyed Michelle McCool accompanied Layla to her single’s match. When Kelly Kelly gained the advantage over the English-born Diva outside the ring, Michelle opted to throw her war-torn partner-in-flawless back into action. This allowed Kelly Kelly to roll the disoriented beauty up for the three-count. After the match, Michelle shoved Layla to the canvas and exited alone.

Edge surrendered the World Heavyweight Championship
In one of the most heartfelt moments in SmackDown history, Edge emerged to relinquish the World Heavyweight Title. Displaying an extremely positive attitude in the face of his forced retirement, the 11-time World Champion thanked every member of the WWE Universe and stepped out of the spotlight. For more on Edge’s extraordinary career.

Rey Mysterio def. Drew McIntyre
In an extremely vicious showdown between Rey Mysterio and Drew McIntyre, The Ultimate Underdog overcame the sheer brutality of The Sinister Scotsman, hitting a 619-splash combination for the victory.

Rey Mysterio attacked Cody Rhodes
Despite Cody Rhodes’ victory over Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania, the bitter Superstar made it clear that he won’t let his obsession with The Master of the 619 go. Mysterio soon charged to the ring, sending the self-conscious second-generation Superstar away with a 619 to his mid-section.

Ezekiel Jackson def. Kofi Kingston
While Ezekiel Jackson competed in an intense match with Kofi Kingston, his fellow Corre members sat in with the SmackDown announce team, displaying obvious friction with each other. When “The Personification of Domination” hurled his high-flying opponent directly on top of his faction brethren, Wade Barrett rushed toward the ring in an absolute rage. This distraction allowed Jackson to hurl Kofi to the canvas and pick up the huge win.

GM Theodore Long decided the future of the World Heavyweight Championship
Just four days after Edge announced that a serious injury was forcing him to retire from WWE, the No. 1 contender to the World Heavyweight Championship Alberto Del Rio came forth, suggesting that The Rated-R Superstar present him with title. SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long informed the elitist Superstar that instead, his new opponent for the World Title Ladder Match at Extreme Rules would be determined in a 20-Man Over-the-Top-Rope Battle Royal. Del Rio then proclaimed that he is glad to be the Superstar that forced Edge to retire.

Christian vs. Alberto Del Rio (World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match)

In one of the most stunning moments in WWE history, on the April 11 edition of Raw, Edge announced that he was retiring due to injury. Then, just days later on SmackDown, The Rated-R Superstar officially surrendered his title. With the title vacant, SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long arranged for a No. 1 Contender’s World Heavyweight Championship Battle Royal. The winner would face Alberto Del Rio, who already earned a match with Edge at Extreme Rules by beating Christian in a No. 1 Contender's Match on the April 8 edition of SmackDown. Surviving the 20-man war was none other than Edge’s lifelong friend, Christian, who eliminated Jack Swagger. Clearly, Edge and Del Rio do not like each other. However, the disdain between Christian and The Mexican Aristocrat is downright palpable. After all, it was Del Rio who put Captain Charisma out of commission last fall with a torn pectoral muscle due to a session in his Cross Armbreaker. Del Rio has continuously claimed that it is his destiny to win the World Title. However, what about Christian? Some would argue that he has been preparing his entire career for this moment. What would be more appropriate than following in the footsteps of his lifelong friend, The Ultimate Opportunist, in his specialty – a Ladder Match? One thing is for certain. There will be a new World Heavyweight Champion crowned the night WWE goes extreme.

Jerry Lawler & Jim Ross vs. Michael Cole & Jack Swagger

“May we have your attention, please!” Personal animosity is about to evolve a WrestleMania rematch into an “Extreme” tag team showdown as Michael Cole – the Raw General Manager’s unofficial spokesman – teams with former friend Jack Swagger to battle Jerry “The King” Lawler & fellow WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross at Extreme Rules. In a clash the WWE Universe might have never foreseen months ago, the “vintage” Raw announce team of Lawler & Ross reunite in an attempt to finally silence the audacious mouth of Cole, the self-described “Voice of WWE.” WrestleMania should have been a monumental moment in the life of Jerry Lawler. Not only was it his first time in his illustrious career that The King would compete at The Show of Shows, but the regal Superstar would finally be given the chance to get some payback on his ultra-cocky fellow Monday Night Raw announcer. For months, Cole ridiculed The King at every pass, stepping way over the line as he mercilessly mocked Lawler’s family. With his vicious trainer and former World Heavyweight Champion, Jack Swagger, at his side, Cole attacked the WWE Hall of Famer week after week. On The Grandest Stage of Them All – with “WWE Tough Enough” host “Stone Cold” Steve Austin as special guest referee – not even The All-American American could stop Lawler from making his outspoken opponent tap to the ankle lock. However, the anonymous Raw GM revoked Lawler’s moment of retribution, reversing the decision to award the WrestleMania victory to Cole by disqualification. Just 24 hours after returning to WWE to call part of WrestleMania, Ross rejoined the Raw commentary team, but found himself in Cole’s bold crosshairs as well. With Lawler trapped in Swagger’s clutches, the leader of the Cole Miners attacked J.R. and covered the iconic announcer with his own barbecue sauce. The Voice of WWE made yet another mistake the following week when Lawler's critical victory drove Cole to slap his All-American ally, driving a rift between the two men who will team up on pay-per-view. The gloves – and headsets – have definitely come off for Extreme Rules on May 1. Will the years-old bond between Lawler & J.R. be enough to take down a hated colleague in Cole, despite his rocky pairing with a skilled former World Heavyweight Champion in Swagger?

Catch Extreme Rules live on Sunday, May 1 at 8 ET / 5 PT, only on pay-per-view.

I won't be here for this tonight, so my review of the show won't be up until late tonight/early tomorrow morning.

Looks like a decent show.

Rhodes is incredible. Man that promo, the breathing, the pausing, the anger bursting into his voice. Legit creepy physcho portrayal. It's a joy to watch such talent. Ted DiBiase who?

Wow, goooood match. I can't believe they gave these guys the first quarter of the show. The WWE is putting a lot of stock into Mr. Rhodes apparently.

Cole totally fucked that match up. They should have called the action instead of let Cole babble, would have done more for Swagger.

Awesome Powerbomb there. Trent is a bundle of fun in the ring, I'd love him to get a solid 5 minute match victory on Smackdown.

Eh, I like Baretta okay, but he's great job material. He can sell moves like a champ, and he can do those moves that will look cool even if he doesn't hit them, like that Sliced Bread Number 2 that didn't finish.

Yeah he's a good one to job, but he deserves his moment in the sun eventually, crowd would love his style, and him and Caylen were pretty fun on the mic so he has it in him.

NEW CHAMPS! NEW CHAMPS! NEWWWW CHAMPIONS!!!

Awesome. Sweet match too. They look good standing there together with those belts.

Barret can kiss my keester, it's all about Gabriel. I'd like to see him get a face run. I'd also like to see Chris Masters get a push as well. He's definitely got charisma and the look, and he also has awesome music. I use it for Daniel Bryan on SVR 11.

That was a very good match between McIntye and Masters. I hope Masters get a little bit of a push here, he did great.

Yeah, Smackdown is pretty open now for some big pushes..they'll get one huge star from Raw, and maybe someone like Sheamus....so there's plenty of gaps around that people like Gabriel and Masters can fight for.

I'd love a Gabriel/Barret feud though, with Gabriel winning the title as a face.
