World Cup LD

All this nonsense about Messi needing to win the World Cup to be a truly player...

Does that mean that you can only be a truly great player if you from a certain nation? George Weah, George Best etc disqualified by geography.

Total bollocks.

Indeed. The 1998 France team had a few brilliant players that people forget actually won the world cup.

Its 3:15 AM here and I'm still awake. And boy oh boy, was I well rewarded! Another overrated team crushed by the Germans :') Yeah baby! Blowing lots of fishes and fans out of water lately
As usual, feeling bad for the crying kids among the fans though :(

Crushed? Germany were outplayed, should have been down to 10 men.

I was glad to hear Rio point out that Messi's won much more than Pele and Maradona without having won the World Cup. Ooh I dunno about him being player of the tournament though.

Feel a little pity for Kramer, not just having had to come off but also because he won't remember these celebrations or the whole day...

The guy that was substituted towards the beginning? What happened to him? He looked like he was paralysed or something :/ hope its not serious

I think theyre talking about the greats among great & winning the World Cup is a defining qualification to being the very best. Maradona dragged a very ordinary Argentina to win in 86 & set that standard.

Golden ball should have gone to the guy that broke Ronaldo's record or to Arjen Robben... It seemed more like a diplomatic/consolation move to give it to Messi

The whole thing is a completely useless argument.

Plenty of awful players have won the World Cup; plenty of truly great players have not. Pele never dragged Brazil to the World Cup so by that logic there has been only one truly great player in Maradona.

I dare say that on his domestic level alone, Messi is the best player ever.

I liked the visual of Lahm walking back to stand with his team before raising the trophy. Atypical but classy and highly appropriate.

They let Rio Ferdinand make a documentary? The man can't speak functional English.

Someone must have had a massive hardon for the title.

Bill O'Herlihy, our senior football anchor/presenter, is retiring tonight... :(

I'm assuming that means nothing to anyone around here. But there's feels all over Ireland.

This game felt like an old school Iron Man match. Frequent attacks, close calls, drama, tension, going till the full time with none getting the decisive upper hand (sorry for using the word "crushed" previously), emotions running high... This has to be one of the best matches I've ever seen. There is a huge gap between the Top 3 and the rest of the teams.
