This is a tough question, it truly is. I truly enjoy Ryder and his Z True Long Island Long Island stories on YouTube. They're funny, and Ryder has really carved out a niche for himself. But the question here remains- Does this translate into a likeable wrestler/Superstar. Does his Internet show make him someone I want to see on my television in important roles? The endorsements from the Rock & Cena, they're great. But do they translate into a likeable character? In other words, does Ryder's show make him into a reliable, useable character within the realms of WWE, and specifically on Raw?
I would argue that it doesn't. Not to take anything away from Ryder and the show he's done a phenomenal job with getting himself over as a comedy figure, but it makes it harder for me to take him seriously as a player on Raw. When they re-introduced him, he was nothing more then a fist-pumping afterthought who interacted briefly with Cena backstage. But has anything changed with regards to Ryder? Yeah he's been given more TV time and has been presented as a player, and the rub from teaming with Cena a few weeks back was nice. But does that change the fact that he's mostly a comedy figure? All the wins over Swagger and Ziggler doesn't change that. Look at his match with Del Rio two weeks ago. He was quickly squashed, which shows that creative doesn't see him as big time player also.
By reading this, you may think I don't like Ryder. Nothing could be further from the truth. I began to love him when he started to do the youtube videos, but i like him as a comedy player. He can go in the ring, no doubt. But for me to take him serious as even a US title contender, he needs a gimmick change, to be honest. Even with as much success as he's had with this gimmick, he really hasn't risen above comedy level, has he? I'd love to get behind him as more then that, but as for now, I simply see(and like) him as a low-to-mid-card comedy threat, but not even US title material.
I liked him during his feud with Tommy Dreamer in WWECW. Then I forgot about him (as will happen when he's not on TV).
Then I saw him in a dark match on Raw against Yoshi Tatsu back in April 2010 (the Raw that was mainly SD b/c the Raw guys were stuck in Europe b/c of the volcano), and I thought he had a really good match and wondered why he wasn't on TV more.
Bingo. To each their own, but I believe that this is what we should be liking Ryder for, not his comedy. It's not that it's a bad thing, as it's what's got him noticed. However, it's truly his performance in the ring that matters, not what he does on the Internet, however enjoyable that may be. In the end, he needs to be presented as an in-ring threat with credibility, not someone who uses comedy to get over. There's nothing wrong with enjoying his Youtube show- I do as well. But I think we need to consider the fact that the show, while beneficial in getting him initially noticed- may also be the thing that's holding him back from becoming a serious wrestler.
