What song are you currently listening to?

I've been playing alot of Skid Row over the weekend, in preperation for seeing Sebastian Bach live in Manchester tonight. I've not heard any of his solo material (which I regret, I should have picked up his new album), but I've seen from the recent set lists that 75% of the songs he plays are Skid Row tracks, which I do know. If the new stuff sounds good I will order his latest album when I get chance.

This is one of Skid Row's most famous tracks and one that is sure to be in the set tonight. I think it's the 2nd song I heard by the band, and is right up there as one of my favourites, just behind the classic "Youth Gone Wild". Skid Row are definitely underrated in my eyes. Sebastian is a great vocallist even to this day, I am really looking forward to the concert later, I'm gonna leave work early and leave the car back at my house then catch the train so I can have a few beers while I'm there.

I've been digging a lot of Sepultura lately and am working my way back in terms of Max Cavalera era albums from Roots (I will check out some Derrick Green stuff eventually)

I really dig the lyrics to this song and in my current state of being angry and slightly depressed about stuff, lyrics like this and the balls to the wall music make me feel better for some reason.
Yes Max Cavalera isn't a particularly great vocalist but the emotion he conveys is genuine. I also really dig the imagery in the video.

Great memories from the Courteeners gig in Manchester last summer!

This is the opening track from their 3rd album "Anna", and one of the best tracks of the whole CD, which sounded brilliant live in their hometown gig. The whole day was fantastic, getting to Manchester around midday, sampling some fine lagers in beer gardens until heading into the outdoor venue around 5pm to watch Miles Kane and then Courteeners.

I've received an email link today to pre-order tickets for their tour later in the year which I will definitely be doing, as a reward for ordering their forthcoming new album which is released in a couple of months.

I'm actually heading back to this same venue on friday for another outdoor gig- James. Let's hope the weather is as nice this year as it was last!

Gillian Welch - Annabelle

I've been re-watching Justified over the last couple of weeks and there is an episode in the second season that covers the funeral of a secondary character and what the repercussions of the death could mean to parts of the community. This song was used at the end of the episode and perfectly encapsulates the mood of the episode as well as the show at large and I just can't stop listening to it as the final verse is very emotionally resonating:

When I'm dead and buried, I'll take a hard life of tears
Everyday I've ever known
Anna's in the churchyard, she's got no life at all
She's only got these words on a stone

We cannot have all things to please us
No matter how we try
Until we've all gone to Jesus
We can only wonder why

I recently borrowed the latest White liies album (called "Big TV" if I remember rightly), as it's her favourite band. I hadn't heard very much at all from White Lies until then, I only really knew "To Lose My Life" and also a song which talks about a fairground (but I can't remember the name of it). While I haven't been blown away by the album- I find the singer's voice quite depressing if I listen to it for too long, this song is excellent.

It came on shuffle on my iPod in the car this morning, and I enjoyed it so much I immediately listened to it a second time and sent a text to my brother's girlfriend raving about how good the song was! I've asked to borrow their earlier albums to see if there is anything I like as much as this.

Deftones - Passenger (cover)

Admittedly it took me a couple of viewings to realise that it was just one guy playing all the instruments as well as co-singing which just made the cover all the more impressive. It's interesting to hear a female vocalist replacing Chino and Maynard but aside from a few minor issues (that subtle echo effect seems a bit out of place) she does a good job.

The ambiguity of the lyrics is pretty cool too as who/what the passenger being referred to is can be interpreted to mean different things; is it an actual passenger, is it someone who is a negative influence, is the passenger a prostitute, is it another part of the person's personality etc. Cracking tune for sure.

I'm head-over-heels for (not to mention quite upset it's taken me this long to find out about the existence of) Ghost, also known as Ghost B.C. in the U.S. (some legal nonsense to deal with). Easily one of the best metal acts I've come across in years, both from a musical perspective, as well as the great length they go to establish and protect their visual identities.

Anyone with an appreciation for over-the-top metal stage acts, especially of the Black/Doom type (think Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, etc.) who go balls-to-the-wall for stage presence in driving home the band's presence should have no problem finding that same appreciation for Ghost. Musically, they'll probably surprise you, too, compared to the aforementioned groups, or what you'd likely think the sound of a band that looks like the below would sound like...

Get on it, metal heads!

On the topic of darker metal:

Along with Venom, Mercyful Fate were one of the biggest contributors to the black metal genre back during its early years. Don't Break The Oath is not only considered the crowning achievement of the band, but also extreme metal in general. A Dangerous Meeting gets the album off to an exceptional start, in particular the resounding riffs throughout the song and King Diamond's superb vocal range. I especially love the ominous tones near the climax of the song which help create the sense of danger, an ethos the song promotes strongly, and therefore creates an atmospheric track.

If you want to see the spawning ground for bands like Opeth and even Ghost themselves, give Mercyful Fate a listen. You won't be disappointed.

What a great song, I first heard this track on the episode "Lochan Mor" of the TV show "Son's of Anarchy", where the MC are in Ireland to try and recover Jax's son Abel, who had been kidnapped by the IRA. As soon as I heard it, I immediately rewound the DVD and used the Shazam app on my phone to find out who it was by.

The song is all about the political career of Irish politician and soldier Michael Collins, whose nickname "The Big Fellah." It is written from the viewpoint of an Irish republican soldier against the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

Although I don't know that much about Michael Collins or have any political interest in the subject of the song, I just think it's a great piece of music, and I'm going to track down some more material from Black 47.

I guess it was my friend's persistance as well as hearing stuff like this a lot on nights out that I'm starting to get into metalcore that isn't Killswitch Engage.
It also helps that is sounds a lot more melodic than stuff I'd asscociate with Bring Me The Horizon as well as Oli Sykes apparently taking singing lessons for this album but I really dig this song and the album as a whole.

A great song to work out to! I first heard this on the Steve Austin film "The Condemned" years ago, if I remember rightly it was either on the credits on or a video at the end of the film showing how all the contestants were killed.

I loved it straight away but couldn't find a way of downloading it at the time, so the version I had was through YouTube to MP3 converter, and the quality wasn't very good. I've finally managed to find a site that has alot of Egypt Central songs on it for download.

I got this one, the 2 that were on a WWE Smackdown vs Raw game and several others I haven't heard before, and they are all good. I will probably pick up their albums.

COME ON GUYS, LET'S KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE!!! I always love finding out what you are all listening to, I've discovered alot of new music through this thread.

What a riff!! I've always thought of Megadeth as a poor man's Metallica, but this song is right up there with 'Tallica's best- it's a beast! I first heard this on a jukebox in a bar while I was on holiday in Malta. The owner's Wife put a few songs on, including this and I loved it immediately and went to find out what it was.

I've got a copy of Megadeth's Best Of, the 2CD set and there are several tracks I really like other than this, including "Angry Again" and "Trust" but there's alot of their material that doesn't do it for me. I don't really like Mustaine's voice, he can't really sing or shout! This is still a fantastic track though, with a really iconic riff.

Fine you moody bastard :P

Been listening to a lot of Suicide Silence lately

It's really weird, three years ago I wouldn't have touched deathcore/metalcore with a ten foot pole (unless it was Killswitch Engage as I mentioned before) I guess where I am in life I kind of appreciate it more and I understand where they're coming from

This cover of the Deftones Engine No 9 from the Mitch Lucker memorial show is cool. It got me into the Deftones and just shows how much energy Suicide Silence have

If you want to get into Megadeth, then I can't recommend Rust In Peace enough. One of the greatest metal albums ever, with 8 out of 9 songs all being solid (and Dawn Patrol is only 2 minutes long anyway). Peace Sells and Countdown To Extinction are also great albums, and United Abominations is an underrated release from 2007.

As for what I'm listening to now:

This was very nearly my entrant in the WZ Vision contest in the Bar Room, but I thought it was a little long for the competition. Regardless, it's the band at their best, with the grossly underrated Eric Bloom on vocals for this one and knocking it out of the park. It's a thought provoking and rather ambiguous song coupled with enchanting riffs and clear, captivating lyrics. While many will point to the highly popular Don't Fear The Reaper as their best song (and that is a very good choice), I feel Astronomy and Veteran Of The Psychic Wars tussle for that title myself.

If you're looking to get into the band, this is an excellent way to start.

And before you start...NO, this isn't because of CM Punk (although his entrance theme was the reason I first heard the song!) My friend introduced me to a band called the Dan Reed Network a year or so ago, who I have now seen live in concert, as well as Dan himself solo on 4 occasions. They are classed as a "funk rock" band, as are Living Colour.

My friend recently picked up the best of Living Colour and I borrowed the CD off him last weekend, it's currently in the car and I'm up to Track 5 so far. It's pretty good so far, although this song (the opening track) is my favourite as yet.

Glamour Boys (which is track 4 on my greatest hits CD) sums up hipsters perfectly even though the song came out in 1989 haha

Anyway here's a group you should be interested in Naitch. They're from up north and are pretty heavy. While She Sleeps

I just love how they blend really melodic stuff such as piano parts in with proper heavy music and lyrically I can relate to such as Seven Hills

How stupid of me, I forgot to post the song information.

While IOSYS is usually known for their more hilarious sendups on the Touhou universe, Artificial Children, a cover of one of the PC-98 tracks (Stage 3 from Mystic Square) is a little more somber and dramatic. I never really liked Alice Margatroid, I always saw her as the John Cena of Touhou, the creator loving her so much and cramming her down our throats so much that it has a negative effect. But IOSYS are spectacular at what they do, and I'm always up for a good PC-98 era remake.

God damn, its been awhile. People still uploading good music i see, awesome stuff. So here's a few I've been jamin out to lately. The first one is entitled Born This Way- Thousand Foot Krutch I've always enjoyed the style these guys bring to the table, it kind of sets them apart from most rock acts you see out there. This is the lead single of their new album, just released. Check it out.

Our Lady Peace - Fire in the Hen House

The beat, the bass, the tone. I love turning up the speakers for this one. I don't really know what else to say about this song other than I love it! The moment it kicks in I can't help but start bobbling my head and its quickly becoming one of my favorite OLP songs. I hope people can appreciate the sonic force behind this song like I do. For best results, turn up the volume!

I'd not heard this song in ages until it came on shuffle on my iPod this morning. While I tend to listen to faster music on my drive to work to help me wake up in a morning, I thought I'd let this one play through. While it's not one of Guns n Roses' best songs, it's still good and as Izzy singing alot of the vocals.

I've always thought if Guns had combined the best tracks of Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II, removing the filler then they would have one of the greatest single disc albums of all time, it was just ego why it was released as 2 parts.

They did that. It was exclusive to America and mainly sold in Walmart and Kmart. It wasn't so much that they picked the best songs as it was songs with minimal bad language but it was still a pretty good lineup. I prefer it over the two albums.

Use Your Illusion I

"Live and Let Die"
"Don't Cry" (original)
"You Ain't the First"
"November Rain"
"The Garden"
"Dead Horse"

Use Your Illusion II

"Civil War"
"14 Years"
"Yesterdays"
"Knockin' on Heaven's Door"
"Estranged"
"Don't Cry" (alternate lyrics)

How could you forget You Could Be Mine?!?!?

Anyway if I were to do the best songs from the Use Your Illusion albums it would be this

Use Your Illusion I

Dust N Bones
Live And Let Die
Don't Cry (Original)
Double Talkin' Jive
November Rain
The Garden
Garden Of Eden
Coma

Use Your Illusion II

14 Years
Yesterdays
Knockin On Heavens Door
Estranged
You Could Be Mine

I don't know why but I really can't be asked with Use Your Illusion II to much except for the mentioned songs.

Honestly I will readily defend when I say Chinese Democracy is the second best Guns N Roses album (Appetite For Destruction is of course first)

I really haven't heard anything about that before! Thanks for the information. If I had to put together a 12 song UYI album combining both albums it would look something like this:

1. Right Next Door To Hell
2. Live & Let Die
3. 14 Years
4. Double Talkin' Jive
5. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
6. You Could Be Mine (my favourite G'N'R song)
7.Back Off Bitch
8. Civil War
9. Estranged
10. Don't Cry
11. Get In The Ring
12. November Rain

But, if we are getting back to talking about what we've been listening to, this is what I had on while getting ready for work this morning.

I really like the "ReLoad" album, I think it's very good! I know that alot of Metallica fans hate it, but I don't give a shit...just listen to what you like! It's totally different from the style of their earlier material but I think there are several fantastic tracks on the CD, and this is one of them.

The slow heavy riff always gets me banging my head, and Hetfield's vocal style works really well on it. I much prefer this album to "And Justice For All", "Death Magnetic", "Load" and "St Anger".
