Sigh. Again I disagree.
Where you see the boss' son-in-law treating a black man like a worthless slave, I see a performer in character trying to intimidate his opponent. He is being an asshole and says some nasty (and yes, racist) things and gets the crowd really angry - that's his JOB.
Whenever Wrestlemania comes around Triple H trickles in a couple of uncomfortable truths into his promos - like when he pointed out the people chanting "You can't wrestle" to John Cena. Another uncomfortable truth is that Booker became a 5 time WCW champion in a time when the belt was about as meaningful as today's WWE tag team title.
Things to keep in mind as well when watching that particular promo:
- The plan at the point of that promo was for Booker T to go over at Mania. Had Booker won, none of it would have mattered. That plan was changed because of the impending arrival of Goldberg. They knew Goldberg would soon feud for the title, and Goldberg-Triple H just made more sense than Goldberg-Booker.
- The reason Triple H portrayed Booker as a joke was because in the preceding months that was exactly what Booker was. He was in a comedy act tag team with Goldust for crying out loud. Then out of the blue he wins a battle royal and is the number 1 contender. Of course the reigning champion was going to make fun of him for that.
- In the weeks that followed Booker forced Triple H to change his tune and before Wrestlemania came about he seemed downright intimidated. This isn't so much an example of racism as it is of good writing. I mean, come on, it's scripted, dude. If that was really how Triple H felt he would be smart enough not to say these things on camera.
