Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

  1. Django Unchained ★★★★
  2. Zero Dark Thirty ★★★★
  3. Flight ★★★
  4. Lincoln ★★★
  5. Wreck-It Ralph ★★★
  6. Warm Bodies ★★★
  7. Les Misérables ★★★
  8. Gangster Squad ★★

The videogame references were rather neat - or at least I thought so - but I've no idea how that many different plot strands snuck their way into a kid's movie. I'd have preferred it if it was a little less convoluted and spent a longer time revelling in the wider videogame world.

My quota for the month has been met, but I really want to see Cloud Atlas. Might have to go into town to see it. Hmph.

If you don't see Cloud Atlas and come back gushing, I will fly to England and stab you repeatedly with an ice pick.

Brave wasn't bad, but it was definitely one of the weakest Pixar films. I had trouble getting emotionally attached, which usually isn't a problem for me with Pixar.

Gotcha. I'll give it a try soon enough, and now I remember I need to watch Frankenweeine also. But I'm still holding a grudge against Tim Burton for Dark Shadows.

Which ones would you shave the most and least, out of interest?

Dunno, I'd take 30 to 45 minutes off Pulp Fiction, Aliens, T2 and a few others. An hour or more off Gone With The Wind. Can't think of many long films that wouldn't benefit from being tighter.

The Magnificent Seven managed to cut an hour or so from Seven Samurai and still got across most of the story from the original. Still prefer Samurai overall though but it was a bugger to keep re watching for my dissertation.

I watched it just the once and kinda want to again, but Once Upon A Time In America was an absolute chore to watch from start to finish. In The West could lose a little bit perhaps but the long takes and scenes serve the purpose of upping the tension for the finale, which is only second to Shane to me in terms of endings of Westerns.

Once Upon A Time In America. Brilliant film. Still overlong. I always treat it as a mini-series and watch it in quarters.

You doing anything special for your birthday?

On an unrelated note, last night was the first time I was intentionally called a Fenian, although it was used in jest. I think. The only other time was a good few years ago when I was at work and my colleague was talking to a customer about an upcoming Old Firm game; my colleague let slip I'd be supporting Celtic and the woman came out with, "Oh right, so that would make you a Fenian, yeh?" From her blank look I think she was under the impression it was a nickname for the team.

So it really was your birthday? I had heard rumors but I decided they weren't true.

Congratulations, you can drink in America now. And happy belated birthday.

The blood donation lady congratulated me on my birthday and asked me how it was. I don't think she really cared, she was probably just trying to distract me from the fact that she was stabbing me in the arm.

"Is that uncomfortable?"
"Well, it feels like there's a needle in my arm, if that's what you mean."

Anyway, I can go in fancy wine bars now. You know, despite looking like a homeless person. A homeless person who stole prescription glasses, clean clothes and a wrist watch off of somebody with a very similar body type. And eyes.

It's now been four hours since I saw Cloud Atlas and I still haven't fully digested it. Could be because it's three hours long; could be because there's half a dozen storylines going on simultaneously; could be because mmph, 1970s Halle Berry! Not entirely sure where it goes on the list - probably in the four star ranks. We'll let it sit a little longer, shall we?

What I am pretty sure of is this:

1. The Matrix
2. Speed Racer
3. Cloud Atlas

But I consider The Matrix to be a stone cold five star classic and Speed Racer to be the most underrated movie of all-time, so there's really no shame in third place.

You didn't love it? It's ice pick time bitch.
