Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

And yet you get the sense Rusev and Bray Wyatt will be lucky to get so much as a whiff of that belt before they die from neglect.

  3. The Hateful Eight ★★★★
  4. Spotlight ★★★★
  5. Deadpool ★★★★
  6. The Big Short ★★★
  7. Goosebumps ★★
  8. The Assassin ★

Much better than I was expecting. I was fearing the worst when even Empire couldn't summon a four star review.

★★★★ for Deadpool, Spotlight and Brooklyn
★★★ for Goosebumps, The Intern and, oddly, Alvin and the Chipmunks:The Road Chip
★★ for Zoolander 2
★ for Dad's Army

I touched bayleyes. Matte fact I was nearly knocked to the ground by her.

She jumped the rails to give a headband to a little girl in the row in front of me.

Saw The Revenant yesterday in one of those new fancy screens with the Premier seating. I'll be honest, I dosed off briefly a couple of times for a few seconds but don't think I missed anything.

Admittedly, there's a lot of times that symbolism in films passes me by but I was drawn to it in this film and thought it was handled wonderfully, such as Leo's costume changes in each act and the recurring use of wood.

However I likened the film to eating out at a very fancy restaurant - awesome while you're there but not easy to keep going back to, so I don't see myself buying it immediately when it comes out on blu ray.

Also, Tom Hardy was absolutely brilliant, as per.

I actually found Hardy pretty hammy, like I usually do. I thought he was a good Max, despite him having as many different accents as he did lines.

I did notice he did his funny little Max run towards the end of his fight with Leo, made me warm inside.

I can't deny he has his hammy moments but it countered Leo's spitting quite well. His monologue about his dad being convinced that God was a squirrel was pretty good at establishing his disregard for nature and condescension of people's faith in it and in general.

Away from films, re-watching House of Cards at the moment and Russo's storyline is tougher to watch the second time around. Those couple of episodes where things start looking up for him coinciding with things taking a turn for the worse for Francis are pretty bleak.
Also, that Adam guy looks far too much like Howard Moon.

I'm afraid I'm largely immune to the charms of big budget television.

People have been on me to watch To Make a Murderer, or whatever it's called, for some time. I've also heard good things about Hannibal. Alas...

Both have their appeal. Hannibal's take on the Red Dragon story might just edge ahead of Manhunter's.

Making a Murderer is probably an easier watch though and I mean that literally. Some scenes in Hannibal are pretty much dark grey shadows moving against blackness, which is narratively fine but still a bastard.

★★★ Triple 9
★★ Grimsby and How To Be Single
★ The Finest Hours

Long week. Looks like The Forest and London Has Fallen next.

You guys don't know how lucky you are to have jobs.

I had the day off today. There are definitely better things to do other than go to the cinema. Not sure what though.

  1. Creed ★★★★
  2. The Revenant ★★★★
  3. The Hateful Eight ★★★★
  4. Spotlight ★★★★
  5. Deadpool ★★★★
  6. Rams★★★
  7. The Big Short ★★★
  8. Goosebumps ★★
  9. The Assassin ★

I feel cruel giving three stars to a film so ruthlessly efficient and with such a startling final minute - but, despite being Icelandic, it felt very dry in a particularly Scandinavian sort of way.

Looking at the March lineup, it'll soon be raining four star reviews.

.

Pretty damn fine year for movies.

Reminder: the Oscars are not a joke and are absolutely the gold standard of quality film-making. Maybe one day one of us will grimace our way to best actor.
