He absolutley does not have the largest fan base since Hulk Hogan. That's ridiculous. He's only been heel once. PPV buys are way down and nothing for Cena to be proud about and the "face" of the company getting booed and cheered is not a good thing. What if when Hogan was slamming Andre at WMIII he had half the crowd shouting Hogan Sucks!?
Also thank you jannety4life! You are a breath of fresh air to these forums.
Seriously do you watch wrestling? John Cena sells more merchandise than any other superstar. He's been the face of the company since Rock departed, he's all over pop culture, and he main events even when he doesnt have the title. He is the Hulk Hogan of this generation.
Please read my words carefully. The PG market is a bigger market than any other demographic, if you disagree ask yourself why Disney is the largest media conglomerate in the world and why the Nintendo Wii has outsold Xbox 360 and playstation 3? The connection is the demographic it's geared to. The WWE has went from a PG13-R rated product to a PG rated product thus capturing a larger demographic and guess who's been the face of the company the entire time, that's right John Cena. In 2008 alone John Cena came in third in gross sales behind Hogan and Austin. And that's just 1 single year. John Cena even increased the sales of Nexus merchandise while he was with them.
Austin was a huge star in his own right but the demographic he controlled was smaller than the PG demographic. Thus Hogan's demographic was and is the same as Cena's, thus why Cena has been the largest thing since him.
People may not like Cena and they have the right, but they must remember than R rated Raws and smackdowns are a thing of the past and arent coming around any time soon, no matter how many "Cena sucks" chants travel the arenas. Many Internet fans and fans that want more edgy material don't like Cena, granted it doesnt matter because that demo arent the ones buying the merchandise and scratching and clawing their parents to take them to the shows. The big bucks are the younger kids and Vince capitalized on it. Yes you may get tired of Superman Cena, but the kids arent and it's about them not you because that's where the money is. Either fans enjoy the product or go watch the soon to be defunct TNA.
