Oh for Fuck's Sakes, America

Yeah, he makes people laugh. So would a farting baby. Are we about to hail that baby as a comedic genius? No.

I would if it were timed well. I actually laughed, thinking of all the places a baby fart would be funny...

Ok then. We'll go with this.

People are paying money to see Dunham. he's good enough that Comedy Central gave him a TV show. He's doing something right.

Comedy Central also gave Krod Mandoon a half an hour every week. Their standards for giving out a television show aren't very high.

You guys are ridiculous "All that matters is the audience laughs!"...no, it fucking isn't. It's a fucking craft and some people are much better at that craft than others. Comedy, like any other performing art, is just that---an ART. It's about more than public consumption. Using this asinine logic, we can all assume that Adam Sandler is the funniest person to ever live. And anyone who actually thinks that is true, is a fucking moron.

I've tried stand-up comedy...And as much as I can make friends and family laugh, it's nearly impossible in front of a crowd.

It may be an "art", but that doesn't mean you need to be special. If you can make the crowd laugh, you deserve your props...

Right, by that logic NSL I assume you'll gladly tell us that Dane Cook is the greatest comedian on the planet right now? Because he sells out more stadiums than any other comedian in the world right now.

I can't believe you NSL, you're always criticizing people for using the Large Audience = Quality argument, and here you are using it.

X, you're getting dangerously close to being on a high horse here. People find Dunham funny, people find Cook funny, people find Sandler funny, some find them all to be awful. They're all successful though and make some people laugh. What do those comedians work their craft to ultimately do? Entertain people, which apparently a lot of people find Dunham to be.

He's funny at times, but he's not really my taste. But, for a ton of people, he is.

EDIT: Stand-up comedy is all about delivery...That's why Robin Williams and Dane Cook can steal jokes, and the fans don't care. Mitch Hedberg had some hilarious jokes, but he couldn't make me laugh if I was doped up at the dentist.

Damn right I'm on a high horse KB, I'm getting so sick of this fucking argument that popularity = quality, it's used in every fucking wrestling thread ever, now it has to pervade every other argument on this forum? Right, so Britney Spears is the greatest female singer of all time, John Cena is the greatest wrestler of all time, Transformers 2 is the greatest movie of all time, and Nickelback and Creed are two of the greatest rock bands of all time. Oh and The Da Vinci Code is the best book ever written and is better than anything Shakespeare ever wrote.

Seriously, where the fuck does it end? Does this mean now that the most popular kids in school are superior now too?

In comedy, there's a direct result to look at. If you don't like that comedian, you won't keep watching out of habit or because you're waiting for them to get better. You simply don't watch.

How is that different from any other audience = popularity argument NSL? It isn't, it's the same exact argument.

Can't believe I have to use my old standard on you: show me where I said he's the best. I said he's entertaining. Last year the Pittsburgh Steelers were the best team in the NFL. I didn't like them, but they were the best. You can like someone and not have them be the best. It works in music, comedy, writing, any kind of entertainment. Dunham likely isn't the best, but he's one of the most successful. He's making people laugh. You can be the most polished, refined comic in the world. If no one is laughing, you fail.

No...For instance, people watch WWE because everyone else is, so they think it's the best. Someone may tune into Dunham because they hear he's the best, but if they're not laughing their ass off, they can tune out...

You can be the most polished, refined comic in the world. If no one is laughing, you fail.

i.e. Andy Kaufmann

Man was fucking hilarious...But he had a ton of detractors in his time...

So wait, now Andy Kaufman wasn't a good comedian?

Right, I'm done with this conversation. That crossed the line of ignorance I was willing to deal with.

I personally think he was great. his Mighty Mouse routine was great...For me. At the time he did it, they thought he was fucking nuts...

Jeff Dunham makes me want to cry, because every puppet is merely a racial stereotype.
Uhh...no they aren't. Have you even watched him before? Are some racial stereotypes? Sure. All? No.

Dunham is a shit comedian. There's more to good comedy than just getting them to laugh
Wait...you mean a comedian who makes people laugh isn't funny?

You have some of the weirdest notions I've ever seen. Perhaps his comedy doesn't appeal to you, but you can't say the guy is not funny. Millions of people obviously disagree with you. Surely you're not one of those stuck up pricks who thinks your elitst theories should determine quality for everyone.

The fact of the matter is that Jeff Dunham's job is to make people laugh. And he does. A lot. So he obviously does his job well.

:disappointed:

Just because people like something, doesn't make it GOOD. That's my fucking point here. No shit he's doing his job. There's a whole lot more to being a comedian than doing your job. Andrew Dice Clay did his job, why isn't he getting worldwide acclaim and respect from all of his peers? Oh yeah, because he's shit.

He was fairly popular though if I remember right. Screw his peers. They can hate him all the way to the bank as Liberace would say.

If you're a comedian, and can't make anyone laugh, you're not doing your job.

And just because YOU don't like his style of comedy doesn't make it bad. Which is what you seem to be missing here.

There's a whole lot more to being a comedian than doing your job.
Oh? What's more important to being a comedian than making millions of people laugh and enjoy a good time?

Do you just refuse to understand the concept of art Slyfox? Comedy is a performing art, and like any other art the actual PERFORMANCE and WORK you are doing (the jokes you tell, the points you raise) can be just as if not more important than whether or not people are laughing. Andy Kaufman showed this to us among many others.

I don't get it, you bring this into every argument from music to wrestling to now comedy. Do you have some kind of deep seated hatred for art or something? Everything just has to be a cold and technical business?

Everything just has to be a cold and technical business?

Comedy is not a cold technical business...The simple fact is that you're doing your job right if people are laughing. That's the point of being a comedian...

I know that. And I've never once argued that it wasn't. Why do you keep repeating this? When did I say that Dunham wasn't a comedian? I said he was a poor comedian.
