WWE RAW 7.02.2011

Opening Segment - It was nice to see Vince back on TV. The Rock will be the guest hos. I really want to see the next week segment where Vince says "the guest host of Wrestlemania is this man ... *silence in the crowd* .. IF YOU SMELLLLLLL!" It will be great.

Randy Orton / CM Punk - It was a good promo, CM Punk was great, I'm glad that they shown the stuff from Unforgiven 2008. They should let Randy Orton talk normally, not this slow motion talk, it is boring !

Ron Killings vs Mason Ryan - Botch after botch. No one cared for them, horrible segment, the crowd was dead. The final decision with the winner was stupid.

Divas - This is Stupid.

John Morrison vs Michael McSHIT - No human being from that arena cared for these guys. Michael McShitname is horrible in every way possible.

The Miz / Jerry Lawler - Very good promo, especially from Miz. Lawler got a smaller pop comparing to the last RAWs. Maybe too long, but good promo.

The Miz & Ted DiBiase jr. vs Bryan Danielson & Jerry Lawler - Good match, that had its moments and the show was made by Danielson. Riley keeps calling him Bryan Daniels.

Sheamus vs David Otunga - Lol, Sheamus as the King of the Ring right now, is so horrible, insulting and humiliating. And what the fuck was with those Mark Henry segments, they showed this stuff last week or this week and I didn't see it ??? They just put that there from sudden! It was stupid and the match was shit. But the image of Otunga walking victorious with the Mark Henry theme in background and standing over Sheamus was so cool. And the CM Punk smile backstage, but here's another problem: Punk told them that they need to destroy and hurt their opponent tonight, he doesn't care for the win, so WHAT THE FUCK was Michael McShit doing there ???? He got destroyed by Morrison and now he stands with Punk like nothing happened ???

Alberto Del Rio - I can't believe, I just can't believe, I can't fucking believe ! It's more official than ever, Alberto Del Rio IS A STUPID FUCKING JOKE ! Good GOD, winning the ROYAL FUCKING RUMBLE has became an accomplish so pathetic, stupid, embarrassing, humiliating, decadent, unimportant ! GOD, you are the winner of one of the most important events in wrestling history, and what the hell, what the fuck are you doing after that ??!?? You do herrendous long stupid atrocious shitty insulting segment with Rosa Mendes, Hornswwogle and fucking Santino Marella ???/ ARE YOU NUTS ? ARE YOU HIGH ? YOU ARE FUCKING IDIOTS, WWE ! How the fuck you can do that ! Why the fuck are you doing this ?!? If I look back to the past winners of the Rumble and compare what Benoit, Taker, Rey, Edge or Orton have done after winning the Rumble with the shit that Del Rio is doing ... My GOD it's so stupid ! This is an insult to the wrestling history, the fans, your history, your own employeers ! Oh, and how could I forget that they still write Del Rio the same fucking discurs since he debuted 6 months ago !

Vickie Guerrero Promo - Why did they put this stupid segment on RAW ??? Give me a good reason why this promo needed to be on RAW!

John Cena vs CM Punk - It was decent, they didn;t put much effort in this match. Oh, and I can't fucking pass this without talking about the *words can't describe the stupidness" promo of Cena after Vickie left. He said an insultin joke, the "Nexsucks!" part was painfull, it hurt me, the second that Cena said that stupidity, I felt John Cena slapping me ! Every wrestling fan should feel insulted by this stupidity.

Overall, the current WWE is horibifuckus! This guy's reaction for the third TMNT movie should all of us' reaction of the present day WWE.

WWE Friday Night SmackDown! - February 11, 2011

Opening Segment - SmackDown! started off with Alberto Del Rio being introduced and coming to the ring with another sort of celebration set up with balloons and all. Del Rio further hyped his match at WrestleMania until Kofi Kingston's music hit. Kofi slowly comes down to the ring and cuts a good quality promo. Not often that we see a more serious side of Kofi. Before he climbs in, he reaches under the ring and pulls out a kendo stick. Kofi does a good job of selling his anger as he's about to lay into Del Rio with the stick, great facial expressions and body tension. Del Rio begging Kofi not to hit him was a nice touch. Kofi eventually laid into Del Rio with the stick, cathing him in the arm a few times before Del Rio takes off. Kofi then uses the stick to destroy Del Rio's stuff inside the ring. Very good opening segment leading into the match. Thumbs Up

Kofi Kingston vs. Alberto Del Rio - Good solid 5 minute match here, though I wish it would've been longer. Kofi looked strong through the match, hitting some of his signature offense. Del Rio eventually manages to get the upper hand and gets the clean win with the armbar submission, forcing Kofi to tap out. I think that these two could have a great feud in the future and I'm hoping that this was just something of a sampler for what we could get later on down the line. Del Rio is really building credibility for his finisher as he's forced anyone that's ever been put into it to tap. This could've been a great match if it went 10-15 minutes, but it was solid and continued Del Rio's momentum. Too bad Kofi had to lose but that's just how the mop flops. Thumbs Up

Vladimir Koslov vs. Justin Gabriel - Really short match here but it was passable. I kind of like that they just haven't rushed into a title change, sort of building it up to some degree. It'd be more exciting if the tag team division actually meant something. But, at any rate, Justin Gabriel manages to get about a 99% clean victory here over Koslov. Heath Slater grabs his leg at one point and that's the extent of The Corre's interference. Slater gets taken out by Santino, who then gets taken out by Gabriel as he hits Santino with a baseball slide kick. Gabriel gets the upper hand and hits Koslov at the 2.5 minute mark with the 450 Splash. Not a great match, but Gabriel looked strong against Koslov and scored a needed victory to continue to give the group credibility so this was passable. Thumbs Up

Drew McIntyre vs. Chris Masters - I wasn't really feeling this match. It lasted about 2 minutes and Drew McIntyre really only hit one move during the match. I like that they seem to be steadily building McIntyre back up. Masters controlled most of the match and the end comes with McIntyre's attempt at a backslide being countered but McIntyre counters the counter and hooks Masters into the FutureShock DDT for the win. Just filler that didn't do much for McIntyre. As I said, he really only hit that one significant move which gave me the impression that he could've ended the match at will. Thumbs Down

Rey Mysterio & Wade Barrett Promos - Mysterio is walking backstage, headed out to his match and comments on Cody Rhodes. He seemed somewhat somber when he wished Cody as speedy recovery but immediately changed into an upbeat attitude a second later as he puts over the SD! EC match next Sunday. Mysterio did a good job here, nothing groundbreaking, but he just seemed fresh and didn't come off as a preachy face. Barrett gave his promo in the ring before the match and gave his usual very solid delivery on what he's all about, The Corre, his participation in the EC match, etc. Again, nothing spectacular, but solid stuff. Thumbs Up

Rey Mysterio vs. Wade Barrett - Fun match and a good mesh of styles between the two. I thought the two showed good chemistry and Mysterio hit most of his signature spots. Barrett looked strong and his slower, more methodical pace didn't feel like it was dragging the match. As with Justin Gabriel earlier in the night, Barrett an almost completely clean victory over Mysterio about the 10.5 minute mark. Gabriel came out and as he jumped on the apron, Mysterio kicked him off and it allowed Barrett to hit him with the big boot before hitting Wasteland for the win. Great win for Barrett and over a former World Champion at that, which only gives the group more credibility. As The Corre starts beating on Rey, Big Show's music hits and he comes down to do his thing. He manages to toss Big Zeke out of the ring and dominates the other three for a while, including hitting Barrett with a chokeslam. Zeke recovers and knocks Show down from behind. Zeke holds him while the others punch and kick at Show for a bit before Zeke pulls him up and performs a suplex on Show, another impressive display of power from Zeke. The Corre stands triumphantly over Show & Mysterio to close it out. Good match, great win for Barrett, Big Zeke continues to look like a monster. Thumbs Up

Kane vs. JTG - Meh, a 2 minute squash match for Kane. To be honest, I wish that they'd have used the time that this match and the Masters/McIntyre match ate up and added it to the Kofi/Del Rio match or the main event. Kane picks up the win with the chokeslam. Thumbs Down

Eve Torres vs. Layla - Pretty decent Divas match while it lasted. Michelle McCool looked great tonight, so congrats to Taker on his hot young bride. At any rate, decent match while it lasted. Nothing overly spectacular happened here, but the girls did a good job with the time they were given. Eve eventually picks up the victory after sort of reversing a pinfall attempt by Layla. It looks as though LayCool is getting close to breaking up, which is kind of a shame since they've actually been pretty watchable over the past 5 or 6 weeks. Thumbs Up

Edge vs. Dolph Ziggler - Pretty good match here but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped it'd be. As in similar matches, the special stipulations of this match ultimately got most of the attention rather than the wrestlers themselves. Vickie employed several fast counts for Ziggler whenever he went for a pinfall, even put his leg on the ring ropes once. At any rate, Ziggler & Edge worked a pretty good match that the crowd was really hot for. Ziggler looked good and drew some good heat while Vickie continues to excel in her role. At one point, she tries to spear edge but winds up "hurting her ankle" and rolls to the outside to get checked. In the meantime, Edge hits Ziggler with a spear as Vickie's back is turned. The crowd is really into things by now and no ref comes out. Edge hits Ziggler with another spear and Clay Matthews comes down to the ring wearing a ref shirt and counts the victory for Edge at the 9 minute mark. Vickie saw Edge hit the second spear and the show ends with her complaining to another referee. I thought the match was good but, as I said, it kind of got overshadowed by the special ref aspect of it. I'd just rather see these two in a straight up match. I think that this needs to be Ziggler's last shot for a while and I'm hoping that the WWE agrees. I think Ziggler has the stuff and I'd hate to get burned out on seeing him in title match after title match and lose each time. Thumbs Up

Overall Show - I thought SmackDown! was a good solid show tonight that did it's job well of hyping the Elimination Chamber ppv. I'm expecting at least 1 or 2 matches to be added to the card by the end of next week as it currently just stands at 3. Kofi Kingston did a good job on the mic and he & Del Rio had a solid match up. I'd like to see something with these two later on down the line. The Corre had a good night with Gabriel winning over Koslov, which gives me the idea that a title change is probably looming on the horizon, and Barrett scored a great win over Rey Mysterio tonight. Some might complain that this hurts Rey going into the EC match but not really cuz Mysterio isn't going to win EC. Big Zeke continues to look impressive as his role as The Corre's muscle tonight. The WHC match was good but it could've been better. I think this should be the last stipulation title match we see on SD! for a while and it also needs to be Ziggler's last shot. I would've preferred to see a couple of matches get more time as the Masters vs. McIntyre & Kane vs. JTG matches didn't really serve much of a purpose. Still, pretty good show tonight overall in my view.

Grade: B-

I liked Smackdown this week from Green Bay Wisconsin. The Edge/Dolph Main Event was fun and liked Clay Matthews getting involved to count the 3 for Edge to Retain the WHC. Vickie's shanagens were no surprise but she needed to get SPEARED,maybe some other time. Kofi & Alberto had a nice little Match as well and I really liked the Rey Mysterio/Wade Barrett Match too. I would like to Chris Masters & Drew Mcintyre have a small series,we got a little taste of that which I thought was fine.

I wish someone though would slap Micheal Cole, either Josh or Booker T im begging them to LOL. Looking forward to Smackdown 600 next week from San Diego before Elimination Chamber and that 12-Man Tag Match.

Gold Stars for 2-11-11 SMACKDOWN!

1. Koslov vs. Justin Gabriel
- This was a good match too be so short. It's always nice to see Koslov wrestling like he should be. I was also happy to see an increasingly handsome Justin Gabriel, the more I see him the more I start to wonder about how great he'll be when he leaves the Corre.

2. Rey Mysterio vs. Wade Barret
- All through the Gabriel-Koslov match, I was thinking about how much I loved Justin and how he was the only thing I cared about in the Corre. Then I started thinking about how I didn't get the appeal of Wade Barret, at all. But during his promo and match, I was like, Ohhh, I get it. Good match here

3. Edge vs. Dolph Ziggler
- Everything just worked here, from Edge hitting the Spear twice, too Vickie, um, attempting one, to Aaron Rogers as the referee to make the count, the crowd reacted beautifully. Another thing I realized while watching SD! last night, was that every time I see Dolph, SD! and Raw, he looks more and more like a main eventer.

QUOTES FOR Smackdown 2-11-11

~ "Alberto Del Rio fighting for a country, what country? Mexico, he didn't care about Mexico, he cares about himself." - Michael Cole

~ "You can be out for 6 months just fallin down in the chamber." - Booker T

~ "Stay on your bicycle, keep it movin." - Booker T

~ "Drop him like a bad habit." - Booker T

~ "Shut up, Cole." - Josh Mathews

~ "Still, the World, Heavyweight, Champion." - Booker T

Am I the only one who didn't like the ending of the main event? I don't watch football, not even the Super Bowl, so I didn't know who the guy was until they said so. It's a fun little thing for the hometown crowd, sure, but I thought it was a bit silly and sort of cheapened what had been a fairly dramatic air about the stipulation. Edge was desperately hoping for a way to retain his title against impossible odds, and is ultimately saved by a football player in a referee shirt? Probably awesome for Packer fans, but kind of an eye-roller for those who can't relate.

WWE Monday Night Raw - February 14, 2011

Opening Segment - Raw started off with John Cena coming out and doing his thing for a few minutes, being in ultra happy mode for just a bit while hyping WrestleMania and the Elimination Chamber. CM Punk comes out and interrupts him and gives another solid promo, building up a little anticipation for their match. It was a nice little tie in to their match, though I would've preferred they'd skipped the promo portion and just added more time to the match. Still, solid opening all the same. Thumbs Up

John Cena vs. CM Punk - Really good match up here with both of them looking strong and resilient throughout the match. Even though it's only been a small handful of weeks since Punk returned to action after being out for several months, he hasn't looked as if he's lost a step at all. Both of them took some of the other's best shots and Punk was aggressive here. I loved the ending with Punk pushing a steel chair into the ring, after being given to him by a Nexus member under the ring, as a decoy before grabbing a wrench and smacking Cena upside the head with it. Punk then hit the GTS at the 10.5 minute mark for the win. I was a little surprised, pleasantly so, to see Punk get a win here and it kept his momentum going to the EC. ***

Alberto Del Rio, Edge & Vickie Guerrero - Del Rio comes out to some great heat from the Anaheim crowd and does his thing for a few minutes, talking about his destiny to be the WHC after WM. Edge comes out and keeps things short and sweet on the mic before taking Del Rio down and beating on him. Ricardo Rodriguez distracts Edge so Del Rio can slip out under the bottom rope onto the apron. Edge spears Del Rio off the apron and into the barricade before Vickie comes out with Dolph. She announces that Ziggler is the new WHC and that the title will be presented to Ziggler at SmackDown! this Friday. Pretty good segment that kept the WHC situation spotlighted well on Raw. I fully expect Teddy Long to return this Friday, thus preventing Edge from reliquishing the title. Thumbs Up

Eve Torres vs. Natalya - The live crowd wasn't really into this, it is a women's match after all, but I thought that they did a good job. I enjoyed that the match revolved around mostly chain wrestling with some decent back and forth action. This match was hurt by the fact that it was only about 4 minutes and the ending to the match was a little clunky. Eve retains the title cleanly, which was somewhat disappointing because she garners no reaction at all from anybody it seems. The Divas are still far from perfect, but it's still been vastly better over the past 2 months or so than it's been in a very long time. **

Sheamus & Mark Henry - One reason I enjoyed this was for ths sheer simple fact that we didn't have to endure a Mark Henry match. Sheamus ultimately took Henry out with a couple of Brogue Kicks and talked a little trash aimed toward his opponents in the Elimination Chamber match. Short, sweet & effective. I just hope & pray that they aren't going to have Sheamus feud with Henry. It'd be a huge step down for Sheamus and I see nothing good coming from it. Thumbs Up

The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan - Excellent match between these two rivals. Both men looked really strong and put out a great, competitive match that just worked from top to bottom in my view. As I said with Byan's involvement in the tag match with Jerry Lawler against Miz & Ted DiBiase last week, it's really good to see Bryan involved in something relevant after being bogged down with the Divas for weeks on end. Bryan hit some of his high energy offense and the crowd was very much into the match from the get go. I especially liked the part where Miz executed a neckbraker on Bryan against the ring apron. Pretty innovative and it looked great. The Miz ultimately picks up the win at the 12 minute mark cleanly after hitting the Skull Crushing Defeat. Big win for The Miz and Daniel Bryan had a great showing for himself against the reigning WWE Champion. Post match, Miz talked about his match with Lawler and mentioned the passing of King's mother. I gotta little nervous as I thought that they might possibly do something extremely tasteless here, but they didn't go that route thankfully. Miz put himself over and delivered a good final hype for his match at EC. ***1/2

John Morrison & R-Truth vs. Michael McGuillicutty & David Otunga - I'm glad they went this route as I had no interest in watching Morrison & Truth go at it. Overall, this was a solid 5 minute tag match that worked for me due entirely to John Morrison. Morrison showed some real, tangible aggression in this match and basically spent most of his time in there just beating the ever loving shit out of McGuillicutty. This is something that JoMo needs to show more often because the crowd was really responding to it. JoMo gets the win with the running knee on McGuillicutty. Some good physical action and great display of aggression from JoMo coupled with Truth's energetic style. **1/4

Valentine's Day Skit - As soon as Khali's music hit, I flipped the channel for a few minutes. I don't know what happened but it probably wasn't anything good, unless a metor crashed through the roof of the arena and left a huge smoking crater where Khali was standing. I didn't see it, so I can't really say one way or another. I have a feeling that I just wouldn't like it so I flipped for a few. N/A

Randy Orton vs. Sheamus - I would've preferred this match had been longer, but I enjoyed it a lot while it lasted. I thought it was a good physical, hard hitting match between these two. I assume that they cut this match short to devote time to revealing the guest host for WM so I can cut some slack on the lack of time. They packed a lot of action into a little more than 5 minutes and Orton just hitting the RKO out of nowhere was a nice touch. Personally, I would've liked to have seen Sheamus get the win here but still good while it lasted. **1/2

The Rock - What can I say about this? I mean it was simply an amazingly awesome segment and moment on Raw. The Rock did his thing for about 15 minutes or so and the ovation he got was mindblowing. Like most others here on the WZ Forums, I pretty much marked out when I heard the "If ya' smell" go out over the speakers. I was hoping that it'd be The Rock and I'm glad to see that the WWE delivered. The Rock's promo was amazing, one of the best I've heard in a very long time. He looked to be in great shape and the way he delivered on the mic was as if he'd just left the WWE yesterday. Getting into it with Cole and the Raw GM was classic and Rock delivered some of his best lines. Really, he nailed all of his signature lines and had the crowd hanging on his every word and gesture the entire time he was out there. I especially enjoyed hearing him tear into Cena. I could go on and on about how great this was and it'll truly be one of those memorable Raw moments that people will remember for years to come. Thumbs Up

Overall Show - Tonight's episode of Raw was fantastic in my opinion. The final hype for the Elimination Chamber was really well done and we got some very good matches out of it. Cena & Punk continued to work very well and I thought Punk pulling out the victory here was great. We all pretty much know that Cena will win at EC, so having him go down to Punk here worked nicely and built some real credibility for Punk. Punk's come a long way from the guy that Cena used to slap around and beat within about 2 minutes. The women's title match was decent, but it could've been better if they'd given then some real time. The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan was match of the night, a great outing from these two and it's great to see the WWE getting on track again with Bryan. If they just give him some time on the mic and let him show that he does have some real personality, he'll be solid gold. JoMo looked really good tongiht as well and he needs to be more aggressive in his matches like he was tonight. The crowd was digging JoMo going Hulk on McGuillicutty. Orton vs. Sheamus was good while it lasted, good physical match up here. The highlight of the night, of course, is seeing The Rock announced as the guest host for WrestleMania 27. The Rock was in prime form tonight and it was like I was 18 years old again watching Raw with my brother. The Rock hasn't lost a single step on the mic, not one single step. With The Rock as the guest host at WM, I think WM has a really good chance of reaching 1 million ppv buys. I'm looking forward to EC and I'm a little surprised that more matches haven't been added. It looks as if the WWE has adopted a less is more approach to their first two ppvs of the year. It worked very well with the Rumble and I see no reason why it can't work here.

February 14th Raw: Hits and Misses

Raw Hits:

The Rock returns and cuts the hottest promo in WWE over the past year: This was an absolutely spectacular Raw moment in every way. Rock had the the live crowd with him every step of the way, as it seemed he had never left. I truly believe that very well may have been the hottest promo we've seen on television in years. I could probably ramble on and on about how great it was, but if you were watching, you know how truly spectacular it was. The most intelligent line of The Rock's promo is when he emphatically told the fan that his return had nothing to do with making money or to shill a movie. While the line about him never leaving WWE again will obviously set up many a fan for disappointment, it's going to be a great ride while The Rock is around. The verbal battles between Cena and Rock along the way should be absolutely tremendous, although I expect a mutual respect to be formed somewhere along the way. Anyway, this was a great promo in every way possible.

John Cena vs CM Punk: As a Cena mark, I never like to see him lose. But looking at this objectively, this was an excellent TV match with the right man going over. Punk needed to win the match to keep his momentum going. Great move. However, the idea that the person under the ring would wear Nexus armbands is idiotic. Would they really risk Punk being removed from the Elimination Chamber match when they could just play it safe by removing the armband? Still, this was a very good TV match with the right man going over.

The Miz vs Daniel Bryan: Bryan really shined in this match despite coming up short. His missile dropkick off the top may have been the best of its kind Ive seen in years. Another cool spot was when Bryan jumped off the ring apron and caught Miz with knees to the jaw. It was also nice to see Miz get a clean victory, which he really needed at this point. These two have excellent chemistry together and I hope they revisit this feud again in the future.

Miz promo on Lawler: I was somewhat pleasant surprised that they went with a heel offerring his sincere condolences to Lawler, which was a classy touch by WWE. No problem whatsoever with him going back into "heel mode" when he noted that he didn't want Lawler to use it as an excuse when he beats him on Sunday. Im sure WWE had to shuffle plans because of Lawler's mother's death, so Miz' promo was as good as they could possibly get in trying to sell the PPV on Sunday.

John Morrison and R-Truth against Michael McGuillicutty and David Otunga: This match wasn't anything special, although it was decent considering the parties involved. However, the "hit" is more for morrison's intensity and fire that he showed during the match. I love that he's getting his running knee over as a legitimate finisher, as it looks far more effective then Starship Pain. The switch of the match didn't make sense as it was originally advertised as Truth/Morrison, but it fit within the storyline.

Edge/Del Rio/Vickie segment: It was good to see Edge get the upper hand on Del Rio, as even the best superstars need their momentum slowed at some time. The verbal exchange between the two was quite good and Del Rio's antics when Edge brought up the guitar shot show why he may be the best heel going right now in WWE. Vickie's interruption was expected, but provided a great hook to tune into Smackdown on Friday night with her promise to crown Ziggler the new WHC, and fire Edge for his "attack" on Teddy Long. Great stuff.

Overall Show: The Rock returns and cuts one of the hottest promos in years. The show was very wrestling heavy and the quality of wrestling was quite good. They succeeded in building toward the EC PPV quite well, as all of the major players got significant air time during the show. The announcement by Vickie Guerrero was a phenomenal hook in setting up Friday's Smackdown show. My only surprise was that they didnt announce more matches for ther PPV, but perhaps they'll get to that on Smackdown. Maybe Im going a little high here, but this show gets an A in my book.

Raw Misses:

Randy Orton vs Sheamus: Last year at Summerslam, these two were feuding for the WWE title at Summerslam and only played second fiddle to the Nexus/WWE storyline. Now, they're in a forgettable 5 minute match on Raw in which Sheamus jobbed for the 27th straight week clean. A slight exaggeration, but what are they doing with this guy? I had no problem with Morrison going over him in their feud, because I figured he would be booked strong going forward. I couldn't have been more wrong, and I hope they have something big planned for Sheamus soon before he loses more credibility.

Eve vs Natalya in a Lumberjill match: Has any lumberjack(or jill) match ever been good? Ever? The idea of having a lumberjills match for two babyfaces is an odd choice, as the only thing I can think of is they wanted to get all the Raw divas on the show. The live crowd didn't care, so honestly, why bother? This would have been the perfect moment for Awesome Kong to debut and destroy all parties involved. Anyway, this was too short, and sloppy at best to mean anything whatsoever.

The Radical Raw Recap w/ X

WWE Monday Night RAW
February 14th, 2011
Honda Center, Anaheim, California
Attendance: 17,000+

Tonight's a big night as we're 6 days away from the Elimination Chamber PPV and we've got the announcement for who the guest host of Wrestlemania 27 will be along with John Cena vs. CM Punk, Randy Orton vs. Sheamus, and John Morrison vs. R-Truth. So let's get right to it!

Your hosts are Michael Cole and Josh Matthews

John Cena comes to the ring first and cuts a lively promo about it being Valentine's Day and tonight being a big night towards Wrestlemania. Minor "Rocky" chants start up while Cena jokes about Lady Gaga being the guest host of Wrestlemania. Cena cracks some jokes on Cole's love of Riley and Miz, claiming they have no proof Michael is even a man. CM Punk comes out and talks about how the record is 2-0 in Punk's favor in matches against Cena. Punk gets some good heat from the crowd just for basically saying he's a good person, and we're right off to our first match of the night...

John Cena vs. CM Punk

Cena immediately throws his shoulder into the steel post and falls to the outside, where Punk meets him with a big lariat off the apron to the floor. We cut to commercial here and when we return Punk is dominating Cena inside the ring with a knee strike for a two count. Snap suplex gets Punk another quick two. Punk tries a jackknife rollup for two, and then grapevines his legs around Cena's chest. Cena powers out of the hold and tries for the STF but Punk gets to the ropes before it can be applied. Punk lays in some knee and forearm strikes, but Cena comes back with big right hands and a pair of shoulder-blocks. Atomic slam from Cena and he does the Five Knuckle Shuffle spot. He goes for the Attitude Adjustment but Punk counters out of it with a big leg lariat. 1-2--NOO! Cena kicks out. Great action so far. Punk tries for the Anaconda Vice but Cena hoists him up on his shoulders only for Cena to hit a gut-wrench suplex on Punk. 1-2--NOO! Punk kicks out. Cole reminds us "there MUST be a winner tonight" by pinfall or submission. Cena goes to the top but Punk kicks him off of it. Big knee to Cena's face in the corner and Punk tries for a bulldog but Cena counters with a drop toehold, going for the STF again but Punk counters out of that and hits a twisting neckbreaker for a hot near fall. Punk tries for the GTS but gets rolled up for a two count. A big roundhouse kick to the back of Cena's head just lays him flat out here. 1-2--NOO! Cena powers out again. Punk is getting frustrated while big "Cena!" chants start up. Punk tries a body press off the top rope but Cena catches him and rolls through, hoisting Punk up on his shoulders for the Attitude Adjustment but Punk evades it and falls to the outside. Suddenly a phantom hand comes out from under the ring with a chair and a Nexus armband, giving it to Punk in creepy fashion. Punk slides the chair into the ring, but then hits Cena in the face with a small wrench while the referee is distracted with the chair, and CM Punk hits the Go to Sleep for the win at 8:00 (shown)! Wow, great match here as these two have developed some great chemistry together and Cena was matching Punk move-for-move in this one. Fast-paced and fun. ***

After the match Cole lets us know why The King isn't here tonight as his mother had just passed away the day before. As macabre as it might sound I expect this might convince the WWE to give Jerry a fluke win this Sunday at the Elimination Chamber, and then probably have Miz regain the title the next night on Raw. Which isn't the worst plan I've ever heard.

Back from the commercial break Ricardo Rodriguez introduces Alberto Del Rio in his trademark fashion. They hype the title match this sunday and Del Rio's title shot. Del Rio tries to cut a promo but Edge interrupts him and reminds Del Rio about his attack on Edge with the guitar. Edge attacks Del Rio in the ring though and knocks Ricardo off the apron as well. Suddenly Vickie Guerrero comes out to her usual chorus of boos. Vickie announces that Dolph Ziggler is the new World Heavyweight Champion, because of a match that Vickie refereed on Smackdown last Friday in which Edge illegally used the spear to get the win over him. Edge has the belt, but Vickie says on Friday they'll have the coronation for Dolph Ziggler being the World Heavyweight Champion. Then she says she has proof that Edge was the one who attacked Teddy Long weeks back, and promises to get Edge fired as Vickie cackles like a mad witch. WOW.

Another 2/21/11 promo, with a mysterious man in a cabin in the woods. They all but basically scream it's the Undertaker using last year's Wrestlemania music and showing what is clearly the lower half of Undertaker's face in the cabin. Nice little vignette.

They announce tonight we'll have The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan, which should be good.

WWE Diva's Title Lumberjill Match
Eve Torres (C) vs. Natalya

No reaction for Eve. At all. Headlock and headscissors takedowns from both girls start us off. They both miss dropkicks while Cole and Matthews babble about anything but the match in the ring. Natalya tries a waistlock but Eve counters it with an armbar. Natalya puts Eve into the Mexican Surfboard but Eve counters out of it. Headlock from Natalya now and Eve hits a somersault legdrop for two. Natalya gets tossed to the outside and the divas immediately start to surround her like plastic piranhas, and EVe wipes them all out with a body press. Back inside Natalya tries a rollup but Eve counters with a rollup of her own for the win at 3:35. What was the point of the lumberjills gimmick again? The usual sloppy suckfest. 1/2*

When we return from the commercial break we see the band Rev Theory hanging out in attendance tonight.

Backstage the Bella twins attack Eve, which gets broken up by Natalya and Tamina.

We get the trailer for The Chaperone starring Triple H.

Before Mark Henry can come to the ring for a match Sheamus attacks him and knocks his head off with a big boot, grabbinga microphone. He reminds everyone what he's capable of and tells us to watch what he does to Randy Orton later tonight. Big kick to Henry lays him out. Nice little segment to try and get some heat back for Sheamus this Sunday.

The Miz vs. Daniel Bryan

Alex Riley is on commentary. This should be good as Bryan had a great feud with the Miz to win the US title a few months back. Small "Daniel Bryan!" chants ring out while Cole and Riley do their best to try and bury Bryan as a dateless nerd for life. Big shoulder-block from Miz takes Bryan down. They lock-up an exchange arm-drags and elbows. Big boot takes Bryan down and Miz slams his knee into Bryan's back a few times. Miz slaps on a camel clutch now but Bryan powers out of it and attempts a sleeper. Cole compares The Miz to Lou Thesz and Steve Austin, enraging millions of internet fans worldwide at the mere thought. Bryan flips out of an irish whip and then hits a big running forearm. He gets a nice running dropkick to The Miz in the corner for a two count. Miz gets tossed outside by Bryan and he follows him out with a flying knee off the apron, sending the Miz right through a barricade! Big missile dropkick gets Bryan a two count back inside. Bryan tries for the LaBelle lock but Miz gets the ropebreak. He violently snaps Bryan's neck down the ropes, onto the apron, and finally onto the floor in a nasty spot as we cut to commercial. When we return The Miz tries for a superplex but it's blocked and Bryan leapfrogs over him with the sunset flip-powerbomb combination! 1-2--NOO! Miz just barely kicked out. Huge knee strikesfrom Bryan and the crowd is fired up, really behind Danielson. Miz gets a quick schoolboy and a cradle for a two count, then he attempts a neckbreaker but Bryan counters with a German suplex! Big kick to Miz! 1-2---NOOO! Miz barely kicks out again. Bryan leaps on Miz's shoulders but ends up eating a facebuster. and then The Miz finishes Bryan off clean with the skull-crushing finale at 8:44 (shown)! Very fast-paced match here with Bryan holding his own against the WWE champion for most of the match before Miz hits his finisher out of nowhere for the win. Excellent little TV match. ***

After the match The Miz says he's going to do the same thing he did to Daniel Bryan to Jerry Lawler this Sunday at the Elimination Chamber PPV. He wishes King his condolences over his mother passing away, but he doesn't want that to be used as an excuse when King loses this Sunday.

John Morrison/R-Truth vs. Michael McGillicutty/David Otunga

Cole explains to us that the anonymous GM of RAW e-mailed him that he changed Morrison vs. Truth tonight to this tag team match here, so there you have it. Truth and McGillicutty start it off with rapid arm-drags and hip-tosses. Truth gets knocked to the outside and Mason Ryan gets a cheap shot on Truth while the ref is distracted in the ring. Truth gets clotheslined by Otunga back inside the ring for a two count. Big back suplex from Truth and he makes the hot tag to Morrison, who lays into Otunga and McGillicutty, brawling with them instead of using his usual high-flying maneuvers because his vision is apparently impaired from the Nexus attack last week. Morrison throws Truth over the top and wipes out Mason Ryan on the outside, and then hits the Shining Wizard for the win at 4:16. Nothing match to put over Morrison's toughness and thirst for revenge against the Nexus. *

Cole plugs Chris Jericho's new book Undisputed, which they didn't have to do because Jericho isn't currently under contract, so it's a nice little advert.

When we return from commercial break we have thirteen year old Ariel Winter in the ring, Triple H's co-star for the Chaperone. She asks how the crowds doing tonight and claims to be excited to be in the ring on Raw. She then says tonight is the night for the....Khali Kiss Cam? What? Oh good lord this crowd will eat this segment alive if they don't wrap this up quickly. Khali gets on the mic and babbles about Valentine's Day. Rajin Singh says they're going to have the Kiss-Cam live on the crowd and backstage. We see a few couples kiss, including Santino and Tamina, Vickie and Dolph Ziggler, and...Maryse and Yoshi Tatsu? Then suddenly William Regal kisses Zach Ryder on the cheek! Good lord, what is going on?! Hornswoggle has hit the ring now and gives Ariel a box of chocolates, earning him a kiss on the cheek. That's actually really creepy when you remember Hornswoggle is in his 20s and this girl is only 13. Shit segment obviously, but a nice cool-off point after all of the hot matches tonight.

Randy Orton vs. Sheamus

Lockup to start us off as this crowd is red-hot for Orton, chanting "RKO". Orton hits an awkward Lou Thesz press and lays some shots into Sheamus. Big kneedrop gets Orton a quick two count. Sheamus chokes Orton on the ropes for a bit, breaking before the ref counts to five and drawing some nice heat from the crowd. Sheamus slingshots in with a shoulderblock for a quick two count, which is a nifty move to see from Sheamus. Orton and Sheamus exchange clotheslines and then Orton hits a powerslam. Sheamus comes back with a big backbreaker for two. Sheamus superplexes Orton off the top and both men are laid out now. Suddenly out of nowhere Orton hits the RKO for the win at 5:04! Too short to really build to anything substantial, but fun enough while it lasted. **1/2

After the match CM Punk hits the ring and attacks Orton, but John Morrison and R-Truth hit the ring to try and even up the numbers. John Cena hits the ring now and Cena and Orton clean the ring out of all members of the New Nexus as the crowd goes wild.

Outside the arena a limosuine arrives at the arena, presumably the guest host. We see a woman's pair of legs walking, and that's it as we cut to commercial. When we return Justin Roberts welcomes the host of Wrestlemania 27....who is....? The lights all go out and one by one every big source of light in the arena goes off, including the Titan Tron. After what seems like forever the lights flicker back on and the music hits and it's...

THE ROCK! The arena absolutely EXPLODES into cheers as this is the first time THe Rock has been live at a WWE event on TV (not counting the hall of fame) in nearly 7 years! As someone who was around and obsessed with the Attitude Era when it was happening, this might just be one of the biggest mark-out moments of my entire adult life. I have chills up my spine watching this as The Rock hits the ring and plays up to the crowd, who are still flipping the fuck out. He grabs a microphone and all is right with the world and I am a child again. The Rock can't even get a word in as the crowd is still chanting his name and cheering wildly. FINALLY the Rock HAS COME BACK TO ANAHEIM! And Monday Night Raw! The Rock says he's finally come back....home. The guy hasn't lost a damn iota of his swagger. The Rock lets the crowd know his various nicknames, each one garnering more and more pops from the crowd. Rock takes off his glasses and says he needs to say something as Dwayne now. He says he's back not because of the money, or to promote a movie, but because of the fans. He says thank you, I love you, and promises he is "Never EVER" going away. The arena explodes, again. Rock says he called up Vince McMahon to host Wrestlemania and The Rock cracks a joke about Justin Beiber being the guest host (to MASSIVE heat) but he's obviously just teasing and says it's of course him, The Rock. Oh my lord he's cutting a promo like it's 1999 all over again. The Rock says he won't be afraid to lay the smackdown at Wrestlemania, but to WHO? Could it be The Miz? The Rock says there's one more man he's going to see, but then the lights go off and we've got a message from the Anonymous General Manager of Raw. AND I QUOTE...but The Rock stops Cole right there and threatens to slap the taste out of Cole's mouth to one of the biggest pops in many years. The Rock just tears into Cole here, and the crowd could not possibly love it anymore. Rock even spouts off the "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK!" and tells him to know his role and shut his mouth. Oh my lord nostalgia overload everywhere. They plug The Rock's Facebook account and Rock calls Cole a drunk hobbit, prompting another Rocky chant. The Rock says there's one man he has to see face to face. He says this person came to great success after The Rock left and he talked alot of trash about The Rock. That person...is John Cena. The entire internet explodes at this point, I assume. Rock says the WWE has gone from the Austin 3:16 to "Can You Smell what the Rock is cooking?" all the way to...."You can't see me?" The Rock mocks Cena's trademark taunt and at this point and he calls Cena's constant brightly colored shirts making him look like a big bowl of Fruity Pebbles! The Rock wraps it up by saying he will see everyone at Wrestemania and does the classic "IF YA SMELLLLLLLL" bit and celebrates as the crowd and everyone at home, myself included, are drained. Oh my God what a show.

Bottom Line:
Do I seriously need to convince you to watch this? Go. Right now. It's on television, free, we've got excellent wrestling throughout, and one of the biggest and most hotly anticipated moments in wrestling history with The Rock's return to the WWE after a 7 year absence. This is the kind of show that creates a new generation of wrestling fans. The most super duper Thumbs Up imaginable.

Score: 10/10

X's Wrestling Review

Awesome RAW tonight from Anaheim. I am so glad The Rock is back and will be at Wrestlemania this year. AWESOME Promo from Rock, ripping on Miz,Cole, and even John Cena. I like Cena too but even that was hilarious, could we get John Cena vs The Rock at WM 27?

Good Matches tonight also with Cena/Punk and Miz/Bryan. I also liked the Orton/Sheamus and Tag Match with John Morrison showing some agression. Looking forward to Elimination Chamber on Sunday.

just think if wwe has the rock to put over cena and cena just destroy him. Can you imagine that?

If they do have a match, Cena should win. Cena wont destroy him, it will probably be a very competitive match with Cena barely winning.

What else can you give Raw but an A tonight? When Rock's music hit I yelled holy shit which also scared the crap out of my dad (he thought something bad happened to me) :lmao:

PS- Rock better be on Smackdown tomorrow (I'm going). I'm actually kind of sad he returned as I saw (I think) his last live appearence.

I'm glad to see most agree that the overall quality of the wrestling on tonight's Raw wasn't overshadowed by The Rock.

That was an incredible showing by Miz and Daniel Bryan. These guys work really well together... Bryan is able to get so much out of Miz, without looking like he's completely carrying him(unlike the way Punk was clearly carrying Cena in the opening match).

Also I really like the sudden and brutal JoMo we got tonight, I hope he can carry some of that aggression with him into his matches past tonight.

And finally, I really liked the way the Orton/Sheamus match was booked. Just five or six weeks ago these two main evented Raw with what was a really solid and lengthy match with excellent psychology, I think tonight what we got was a very condensed version of that match focusing on some of the spots that worked best and more quickly developing the story of the match with a much more sudden climax. This gave them both a chance to look strong and get some shine while heading into the PPV, but didn't draw out overly long as to not take away from the real Main Event of the evening... which was obviously meant to be The Rock.

Overall it was written/booked very well for a go-home show, and the talent responded nicely.

Cena's opening promo was dreadful even by the low standards of the last two comedy ones he has cut, I don't get why they are giving him this goofy stuff as he is a strong mic worker when allowed to be himself. Maybe he was made to look extra goofy tonight to give Rock more ammo so Cena can then let rip next week.

Cena vs Punk was again very good, each of their matches have been different and they gel well in the ring, I still feel this should have been the Mania main event. The sneaky way Punk won was clever minus the guy under the ring having a Nexus armband on.

The Edge, Del Rio and Vickie segment was solid, it did a good job garnering interest for Smackdown and continued the development of this triangular rivalry for the World Heavyweight Title.

The Divas title match between Eve and Natalya was pretty good bar the finish, they work well together and Eve has progressed since her last run, her biggest problem is the crowd don't care about her at all. The after-match brawl with the Bellas sets up a six diva tag for the PPV with Kong as the Bellas mystery partner.

I'm tired of The Miz as champion and I'm tired of Cole, but the Miz vs Bryan match was excellent, Bryan can get a good match out of anyone and credit to Miz he did his best out there, I hate the skull crushing finale as it's so clumsy looking, but Miz needed a clean win and got it after a very good 12 minute match that also showcased Bryan well.

The Kiss cam stuff was wasteful garbage.

JoMo/Truth vs Nexus was notable for JoMo's aggression, he really turned it up a notch tonight, his takedowns on Otunga looking particularly strong.

I wasn't really paying attention to Orton vs Sheamus and then suddenly it was over, the mass brawl at the end between the chamber opponents was a decent build up to this Sunday's big match.

I knew The Rock would be the guest host but I've never been a fan, the first 12 minutes or so as he ran through his catchphrases was just on in the background as I wasn't really interested, it wasn't until he said Cena's name that I took notice, I doubt it will lead to a match or anything signifigant but it was the most interesting part of the promo for me.

For all those critics who say that wrestling fans have short memories, take a look at the reaction for the Rock...

Also the woman's feet coming out the limo was a stroke of absolute genius - it got all the nay-sayers up in arms and chanting "I told you so" even in this very LD only to be firmly put in their place by the return of the Great One.

Not sure if I can see Rock vs Cena but it will certainly be interesting to see where it goes.

As for the other return, I agree with what was said regarding the latest 21/2/11 segment. It is clearly about the Undertaker as you can see that it is him but it is so obvious that it suggests a whole other level of intrigue.

This all suggests that we could have a second Wrestlemania running where neither of the World Titles is the main event as Rock/Cena, Taker/Sting or Taker/HHH could easily take that spot. I would have no problem seeing Morrison/Miz for the WWE title, Edge/Del Rio for the WHC (perhaps even with Ziggler thrown in), Orton vs Punk, maybe Sheamus/HHH, Koztino/neXus/Corre for the tag titles, Nash/Show/Zeke and a stacked MitB

Well, after reading all of the reactions happening on the live discussion (some saying exactly what I felt), all I can say is I was wrong about Rock never returning. Dead wrong. The promo was amazing, and more importantly, the moment was unquestionably epic. My favorite part wasn't when Rock was destroying John Cena although I enjoyed that a lot (by the way, I'll die laughing if someone starts a Fruity Pebbles chant during a Cena promo next week). It wasn't when Rock destroyed Michael Cole and threatened to shove the GM's laptop up his ass (although Michael Cole might have gotten an actual sick pleasure out of it). It was when Dwayne Johnson acknowledged the fans for sticking with him and believing in him even though he hadn't been on WWE programming in seven years. This was years overdue, but you actually felt the genuine spirit of that moment. The only thing that bothered me to the slightest degree was when he promised he would never "ever" leave. Of course he will eventually. It's not as if The Rock will become a mainstay of WWE programming again. I hope he meant that he will not take another seven years to show up on WWE programming again.

As for the matches, two matches stood above the other average so-so matches normally on Raw. Punk vs. Cena was a fun match that gave Punk a nice looking win for a heel. It also saves Cena's face with his fans who continue to cry (as Matthews pointed out) that Punk has to cheat to beat Cena. Basic but exemplary heel vs. face dynamic. And again, anything Daniel Bryan touches turns into gold. Bryan played the role of U.S. Champion facing the World Champion well tonight. Miz needed the victory to build towards the PPV, and Bryan played his role of the more than capable challenger very well.

Nothing else stood out on the show other than that awkward Khali Kiss Cam moment between Regal and Ryder. Just no. As Regal might say, "bloody awful."

Otherwise, I have to give the show a great ***** rating for three strong segments (two memorable matches and an iconic return).

I was there live and it was without a doubt one of the greatest RAWs in recent times if not the best. The matches minus the Morrison/Truth/Nexus match and Orton/Sheamus match were absolute quality. The Miz I think finally had THAT match. The match that solidifies if you are ready to be a top dog. Yesterday that was the match. The miz/Bryan match was imo the best match i've seen all year. Both men have great chemistry in the ring and they delivered an exciting fast paced see-saw battle of a match. I'm also very pleased they let Miz have clean win. I think after such a quality match it needed to end like that.

The CM Punk/Cena match was also a surprise because I didn't expect it to open the show. What an opener. Once again very fast paced, quality wrestling from both men, and a surprising ending with Punk pinning Cena for the win. Excellent match with the right man going over.

The Diva's Title match was also better than most divas matches. I was a little surprised by the technical wrestling both women were using but it shows that Eve actually can wrestle if given the opportunity. I wanted Natalya to win but I don't mind Eve going over. She's cool and apparently can wrestle.

The Rock returning....that was the loudest pop I've ever heard in a arena. Everyone got on their feet and I think what shocked us all was that none of us saw it coming. But he's back and delivered one of the best promos of all time. It goes in the books as one of the best especially in recent times. A few days ago I put a poll up asking who was the best on the mic...The Rock in 20 minutes put every guy including Miz and CM Punk to shame. He made them all look like amateurs. The delivery, the lines, were just spot on and natural. He put the E in Entertainment. I swear that one promo by The Rock was worth the ticket.

Overall Great RAW. A solid 10/10

P.S- I'm happy to hear Summerslam is coming back to Staples Center. i'm starting to think WWE has an agreement with them now. But if you think about,. Staples is the perfect place to hold such a large event with all the entertainment center stuff around it. I'm definitely getting tickets.

NOTE: I'm not advertising anything. While this review is from my blog, I won't post a link. I'm not interested in breaking the rules. I'm only posting this because I would love to hear feedback on what I've written, be it positive or negative. For whatever reason, I don't get much feedback on the blog itself. Okay, I have a lot of ground to cover (for reasons that should be obvious), so I'm going to jump right into last night's Raw.

PROS

~ I like it when Raw kicks off with a match instead of 15 minutes of talking. Yes, John Cena cut a promo, but he didn't ramble on for too long. This was a solid match. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. CM Punk can wrest a dynamic, involving match out of anyone, even a superhuman character with a limited moveset. We're off to a running start.

~ Vickie Guerrero's promo was concise and effective. She made me want to tune into Smackdown. I was going to tune in anyway, but she may have convinced a few viewers who don't watch the blue brand on a regular basis. That's her job. How much do you want to bet that Edge was responsible for taking out Teddy Long? I smell a heel turn. Think about it; Dolph Ziggler is too obvious, as is Wade Barrett or any other member of The Corre. The only other possibility is Michael Tarver, a former Nexus grunt who has been hanging around the backstage areas of both shows.

~ The all-too-brief match between Natalya and Eve Torres for the Diva's Championship. It would have been better without the lumberjills. Michael Cole and Josh Matthews nearly ruined this bout, but I'll get to that later.

~ Sheamus killing Mark Henry.

~ The Miz/Daniel Bryan match. Excellent work by both competitors. Mizfits will be delighted to know that he picked up a clean victory and subsequently delivered a nice promo.

~ John Morrison was on fire...damn! Just yesterday, Chris Jericho mentioned in an interview that JoMo needed to work on connecting with the crowd. Morrison must have heard the interview because he went above and beyond the call of duty. In my opinion, that's the first time that he looked like a legitimate headliner. Kudos to Michael McGillicutty for selling like a champ. I am told that this match also featured R-Truth and David Otunga. I couldn't tell.

~ The Randy Orton/King Sheamus match. I hope that Sheamus is given a chance to shine at Wrestlemania.

~ I dug the swerve right before The Rock was announced as the host of Wrestlemania 27. Who was the girl in the limousine? I have a theory, although it doesn't seem like much of a mystery. I mean, c'mon. Who do they think they're fooling? In case you haven't figured it out, I won't spoil it for you, but I will say that she's banging a certain chaperone. Hey, you never know. I could be wrong. After all, we've seen a number of shockers in the world of professional wrestling.

~ Which brings me to The Rock. I read the rumors, but I still didn't believe it. Suffice to say, I had goosebumps the size of Maryse's milk pillows. This will go down as one of the most amazing moments in the history of sports entertainment. And that promo...that fucking promo! I was reminded of the promo that "Rowdy" Roddy Piper brandished on the old-school Raw last year. He schooled the entire roster and made men like Cena and Orton look amateurish. That's what The Rock did last night. Tenfold. He has more charisma in the tip of his penis than the "youth movement" has in its collective body. I'm not knocking WWE's fresh faces. The "youth movement" is necessary, and many of these young talents have wonderful careers ahead of them. However, the sad truth is none of the people that I'm talking about have the ability to control an arena full of rabid fans the way that The Rock does. I've already typed a novel, so I won't break down the specifics of what Dwayne said. Watch it for yourself.

CONS

~ Michael Cole is the worst commentator that I've ever heard. His official title is "play-by-play announcer." But does he call the action? No. Earlier, I affirmed that the Eve/Natalya match was nearly ruined by awful commentary. The match itself consisted of stellar mat wrestling, and if either Jim Ross or Vince McMahon (circa '93) had been sitting at the announcing booth, the skilled women in the ring would have been put over. Way over. Instead, I was forced to listen to Michael Cole arguing with a bland, disinterested Josh Matthews about...well, it doesn't really matter what they were squawking about. Actually, I take that back. It does matter because they were squawking about everything but the match at hand. When paired with Matt Striker or Booker T., Matthews is tolerable. Cole is corrosive. He must be stopped. Fuck you, Michael Cole. Fuck you.

~ I can't buy The Bella Twins as tough and intimidating.

~ Hornswoggle is 24. Ariel Winter is 13. Do I really need to explain why their cutesy V-Day segment was disturbing?

~ The Khali Kiss Cam. Vince, please fire this botch on two legs. On the upside, Yoshi Tatsu was on the receiving end of Maryse's mouth. That made me smirk.

Finally...finally...finally! I'm done.

I just got done watching the 2/18/11 episode and I feel kinda... well... meh, about it.

Why does the WWE have to be such a god damn see-saw? Whenever RAW goes into awesomesauce-mode, SmackDown! turns into unwatchable, apathetic trash.

Miz vs Bryan on RAW was ten times the match that Miz vs Kofi was, which is not exactly a good deal for Kingston, whose only proven accolades are in his ring-work, not on the mic.

Likewise, the lackluster finish to the show (way to get the crowd going, Edge, yeah, really got 'em involved there...) when compared to the (granted, once-in-a-lifetime-ish) last promo of RAW this week (if ya smell...) was just mindblowingly ... ugh.

I like SmackDown!, generally, I really do. I am intrigued to see where they're going with young mister Rhodes, even though I can't stand Rey Mysteroid. I want to see more of Dolph Ziggler, because that kid can sell like a motherfucker; Edge's spear hasn't looked so good since the attitude era, damn it. I enjoy LayCool's antics, even though I really can't - for the life of me - understand why Transitional-Eve is the women's champ.

Hell, I'll even take Del Rio vs Edge as a decent feud, even though I can't relate to his heat at all, seeing how he's just... well... a cocky, fairly rude guy, who happens to be from Mexico? Seeing how I am Scandinavian, I guess there might be some cultural thing I'm missing out on here, or are Americans *really* that bigot and racist? I don't understand the heat - he's living the american dream, ain't he?

Aaaanyway, I don't see Del Rio's appeal (either as face or heel, he's just bland to me), but I'll take it and be patient and see where they're going with it, I mean this week on SmackDown!'s 600th episode Del Rio was... err... Not... there? He's been on every. single. WWE. show. for the past few weeks but on the go-home show for EC he's... what, having a snooze?

I don't know, this week just felt really off; everything from the stupidly thrown-together 12-man tag to the concluding match of the evening was dialed-in and never really got the show off the ground. I definitely do not think it was worthy of a go-home show for a PPV -and- the 600th episode to boot. The best part of SmackDown! was The Rock's edited-down re-run promo from RAW.

That's saying something, I guess.

WWE Friday Night Smackdown
February 18th, 2011
San Diego Sports Arena, San Diego, California
Attendance: ???

We're only two days away from the big Elimination Chamber PPV, but tonight is an important occasion because it's the 600th episode of Smackdown, a mighty big accomplishment when you think about it. We've got a huge 12 man tag match to start us off tonight. Let's do this bitch.

Your hosts are Michael Cole, Josh Matthews, and Booker T

John Cena/Randy Orton/Edge/Rey Mysterio/John Morrison/R-Truth vs. CM Punk/Dolph Ziggler/Kane/Sheamus/Wade Barrett/Drew McIntyre

This is the WWE's way of celebrating their 600th episode I guess, and it's not a bad idea. Huge matches like these always go over well with the crowd. Edge and Drew start us off and Drew eats a big boot immediately. The tagging is far too frequent and chaotic for me to keep track of in the start here, with two new guys coming in every few minutes, doing a few hot moves and tagging out. Orton tags Cena in, who gets some clearly audible boos from the crowd (probably because of The Rock's promo on Raw). He lays a few shots in on Ziggler and then tags Morrison in. Morrison goes for the Starship Pain, but Ziggler delivers a huge back suplex off the top instead as we cut away to commercial. When we return Sheamus is giving Morrison a big suplex for a two count. Punk tags in now and gets some great heat just for that, and he slaps a leg-vice around Morrison's neck. As Booker T so astutely points out at this point, "the fans are excited!". And they are, this crowd is HOT for this match. Mysterio tags in with a big Lou Thesz press to Punk and Mysterio follows it with a springboard body press for a two count. Punk tries for the GTS, but Mysterio counters and tries for the 619, but Punk just grabs Rey and gives him a big twisting backbreaker. Kane tags in now and applies a bearhug of all things to Rey, which is just a weird visual. Mysterio evades a chokeslam from Kane, but then gets launched outside like a cruise missile right into CM Punk! Kane just threw Rey Mysterio like he was a damn football there. After a quick commercial break we return to see Wade Barrett delivering a big backbreaker on Rey for a two count. Sheamus tags in now just mauls Rey as this has deterioated into Rey vs. 6 Evil Heels basically. Crowd is still red-hot though. Irish Curse backbreaker from Sheamus, but somehow Rey kicks out again. Barrett tags back in and they're clearly focusing on isolating Rey in their corner. Rey moonsaults off the top onto Barrett! Edge and Ziggler tag in now and Edge goes to town on him with a facebuster and the impaler DDT. He goes for the spear, but Sheamus boots him in the face, then Morrison hits a springboard spinkick on Sheamus! Kane hits the ring and chokeslams Morrison, but Cena comes up right behind them and gives Kane the Attitude Adjustment, but Punk grabs Cena after THAT and gives him the Go to Sleep, which prompts Orton to give Punk an RKO, and finally McIntyre to give Orton the futureshock DDT. Good GOD that was an incredible sequence of finishers. Rey gets a hurricanrana on Barrett and then throws Ziggler in with him and he gives the both of them the 619! Ziggler tries to recover, but he turns around just in time for Edge to give him the Spear for the 3 count at 12:00 (shown). Wow this was an excellent TV match with a BLAZING hot crowd. The finishers sequence at the end was creative and executed well, and there wasn't a moment of rest from anyone involved. This match definitely delivered the quality expected for Smackdown's 600th episode. ***½

After the match Vickie Guerrero comes out and reminds everyone that Edge is no longer the World Heavyweight champion, and that Dolph Ziggler is. She accuses Edge of attacking Teddy Long, and the tells Edge that he's FIRED! Oh the humanity!

We return from the commercial break to see Todd Grisham interviewing Cody Rhodes, who has a clear plastic mask over the upper half of his face, which is just plain creepy. Cody says he's got a very important announcement next
week for the WWE Universe.

Eve/Beth Phoenix vs. Maryse/Layla

Michelle McCool is on commentary now, which is always good because I personally think she plays the heel role perfectly. Beth and Maryse start it, with Beth obviously dominating in the beginning. Layla tags in and tries an armbar, but Beth just grabs her and slams her down to the mat. Eve tags in and gives her a dropkick and suplex for a two count. They trade weak kicks and then Michelle leaves the announcer's table, but Beth Phoenix punches her injured foot. Eve is distracted by all of this commotion though, so Maryse and Layla give her a very weak pair of superkicks and Layla covers Eve for the win at 2:29. Just your usual sloppy Diva's match here, nothing more. ¼*

When we return from the commercial break we get to see The Rock's promo from RAW in it's entirety again, which was amazing if you haven't seen it yet.

Kofi Kingston vs. The Miz

Both men are looking to go into the Elimination Chamber PPV with some momentum, so this is an important match. They trade waistlocks to start with Miz putting Kofi down with a shoulderblock. Big armdrag from Kofi and he tries working the arm. Three cross-body blocks get Kofi a two count. Kofi tries to springboard, but Miz cuts his legs out from under him as we have to take a commercial break. when we return Miz is in control, suplexing Kofi for a quick two count. They do the Greco-Roman knuckleluck sequence and then start trading kicks. Hurricanrana by Kofi, followed by a dropkick for a two count. Kofi comes off the top with a cross-body, but again Miz kicks out. Big neckbreaker from Miz gets a two on Kofi. Kofi starts getting fired up and does the Boom Boom leg drop on Miz. Suddenly Alberto Del Rio starts walking down the aisle to the ring, where he starts whipping his scarf at Kofi. That's enough to distract him and Miz finishes Kofi with the Skull Crushing Finale at 6:49. Fun little match here for the time it got, and it gives the Miz some more momentum going into the PPV on Sunday. **½

After a brief commercial break we return to a classic Smackdown clip from February 19th, 2004. It's Eddie Guerrero's championship celebration after his title win the previous night. After the clip Booker gets a bit misty-eyed talking about Eddie Guerrero.

WWE Tag Team Title Match
Santino Marella/Vladimir Kozlov (C) vs. Justin Gabriel/Heath Slater

Why the hell is Gabriel stuck with these shmucks? His look and finisher
alone should be enough to get him over solo. Gabriel and Koz start us off, with Kozlov easily overpowering Gabriel. He gives him a big fallaway slam that takes Gabriel all the way out of the ring. Ezekiel Jackson and Wade Barrett make their way to ringside now as Slater tags in and starts attacking Kozlov's leg. Santino gets the tag and starts laying in his usual shots, throwing in a diving headbutt for a quick two count. Santino nips up like he's Shawn Michaels and then hits the Cobra on Gabriel, but Barrett and Jackson break it up for the DQ at 2:01. Was there a point to this other than just having the Corre beat up some people? After the match the Big Show makes the save for Santino and Kozlov and they tease a Big Show-Ezekiel Jackson confrontation down the line. ½*

After a commercial break we return to Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero in the ring for Ziggler's coronation ceremony. Ziggler celebrates with the belt like he just won the lottery, when suddenly Teddy Long's music hits and the GM of Smackdown is back in the house! Vickie spills the beans that Ziggler was the one to attack Long weeks back. Long says he's back in charge, and he books a World title match right here and now between Ziggler and Edge...

WWE World Heavyweight Title Match
Edge vs. Dolph Ziggler

Edge is fired up here and he hits a facebuster and immediately goes for the spear, but Ziggler leapfrogs over him. They fight outside for a bit, exchanging kicks. Back inside Dolph tries coking Edge on the bottom ring rope and laying in elbow smashes. Ziggler slaps on the sleeperhold now, wearing Edge down. Edge tries to escape but he just gets caught in the sleeper again. Rocker-Dropper (or Fameasser if you're a Billy Gunn mark) from Ziggler and he tries the Zig-Zag, but Edge counters and spears him for the win to retain/regain the title at 3:01. I'm not really sure what the point of this phantom title reign for Ziggler was, but these two work well together. Too short to amount to anything though.

After the match Teddy Long fires Dolph Ziggler. Yeah I think assault and battery would be enough to fire someone. Edge grabs a mic and talks about how he was here for the first episode of Smackdown and he's here now, with the title. He mocks Dolph and Vickie for a bit, and then he gets the crowd to do the "Goodbye" chant to Ziggler as confetti falls from the ceiling.

Bottom Line:
This was a fine way to celebrate 600 episodes, as the opening 12 man tag match got some decent time and was an excellent exhibition of the abilities of everyone involved. The rest of the show is kind of forgettable, but we finally got the Teddy Long angle wrapped up. There was enough angle/feud progression though to add with the excellent opening match for me to give this show the Thumbs Up.

Score: 7/10

I liked Smackdown 600 tonight with the Edge/Dolph/Vickie stuff. Teddy Long coming back was icing on the cake and him outing Vickie & Dolph for attacking him was awesome. Also enjoyed the 12-Man Tag and Miz/Kofi Matches. I hope we get a Big Show/Zeke Match for the PPV or even a 6-Man Tag would be nice maybe with Show/Santino/Kozlov vs The Corre along with Kofi/Alberto.

The San Diego Crowd was HOT for the most part all night long. So some good progression going into the PPV on Sunday, which I will be watching on TV.

Nobody has ANY qualms with what happened tonight on SD? I mean, that's no way to get your first world title (Wiki counts it as such, so do other sources.) Unlike Swagger, Sheamus and Del Rio, Ziggler did NOT come out of nowhere. Ziggler was NOT forced on us. What he was, was built up the old fashioned way. Here is a guy who was repackaged after a silly cheerleader stint. A guy who would fight and fight for the IC title with Mysterio and Morrison and lost. He had more tuning up to do.

Then, he finally got Vickie and heat behind him. He finally won the IC title and was a damn good IC champion. Put on terrific matches and stepped up and defended his title on TV and PPV successfully. He brought credibility back to the belt because not only that but Kofi had to work hard to get it back.

Ziggler properly worked his way up from the bottom; but Sheamus and Swagger actually WON their titles. Here Ziggler gets it handed to him and then loses it right away. Not only does this devalue the belt but all of that time invested in building up Ziggler you made him look like a joke. I wanna see anyone defend this and say this was a good idea. What writer decided this to be a good idea? I have no problem if Ziggler scratches and claws his way to the WHC just like with the IC title and just like how it took awhile for HBK and Austin and Benoit to win it.

Was this shitty idea from P.S. Hayes? Who? How is this a good move? Just keep the belt on Edge. No stupid shit. And now Dolph Ziggler goes down as a world champion but he didn't win it and lost it right away. How is this good? It ruined it for me. Dolph Ziggler is World Title worthy and amongst the most ready of the upper mid-carders. But nooo, they pull this shit. WWE and their fucking games I swear.

You took the words right out of my mouth i couldn't agree more whom ever made such a shitty lazy decision should be fired on spot non kafaybe.

Dolph like you said was built up and fought his way to the Ic title and made one hell of a Ic champion the best we've seen in years. Not to mention he didn't get the belt until his 3rd or 4th try now that he finally gets to the WHC.
Only to be a faux champion losing the title he supposively won a week prior.
in a random title match that came from left field.

This reminds me of what they did to Alicia fox they built her up for months she went for the title 3 times finally getting it on her 3rd try. She was getting heat and made a convincing champ only to be buried in two weeks by Melina.

Michael P.s. Hayes has everything to do with said bull shit. I'm with you dude WWE writers and bookers are pathetic. Thinking the steaming hot crap they produce weekly is entertaining pfft ...:disappointed:

I guess you weren't paying that close attention to the Kofi/Miz match because there was ADR interfering to cost Kofi the match.

It isn't a race thing with ADR that gives him the heat. He has that whole JBL thing going for him. He's supposedly a rich sumbitch and loves to rub it in everybody's faces. He even calls himself a Mexican aristocrat or something to that effect. It seems you have the wrong perception of Americans. If ADR was heel just because of his heritage, he would have been the biggest face in the world because last night the show was in San Diego which has a HUGE Mexican demographic.

I didn't care much for letting Ziggler be officially the World Champ for a matter of minutes...I'm still not sure when his "reign" started...Was it on RAW? Was it right before Vickie "fired" Edge? Was it when Teddy Long showed up and made the world title match?

Ziggler will get the belt in due time but having that down in the record books just tarnishes the world title even more than it has been in recent years. Edge should have remained champ throughout this entire debacle but it goes down that Ziggler won the World Title by disqualification. What is this??? TNA???

At least the belt is back where it belongs and it'll be interesting to see who takes Ziggler's spot in the EC.

WWE Friday Night SmackDown! - February 18, 2011

12 Man Tag Team Match - This was a great, highly energetic match to start the show off with. It had tons of star power and a good portion of young talent involved, with the younger guys handling most of the action. Guys like Cena & Orton were in the ring for a bit but their time was brief, which I thought was a good thing. They've come to SD! before and sort of dominated the show, so I'm glad it didn't go down this way. The San Diego crowd was red hot for this match and it was simply a lot of fun to watch and there wasn't any downtime to the match. All of the wrestlers hit their finishers on each other, standard formula for this sort of match, with Edge ultimately hitting Dolph Ziggler with the spear at the 20 minute mark for the win. ***1/2

Vickie Fires Edge - I know it's been said lots of times before, but is there anyone that even remotely comes close to generating the kind of heat Vickie Guerrero does? It's pretty awesome when you stop and think about it. At any rate, this set up was pretty standard with Vickie taunting Edge and hyping Ziggler's corronation as new WHC. Vickie firing Edge was a little surprising, though he'll no doubt be rehired by the end of the night. Nothing earthshattering here, but a solid formula that gives a little more indication for fans to watch and see what happens at the end of the night. Thumbs Up

Eve Torres & Beth Phoenix vs. Layla & Maryse - Not really all that much to say about this match. It was alright while it lasted but it just didn't really click. Eve is very athletic and beautiful, but the girl's just not clicking with the crowd. Maryse is so gorgeous that I forgot my name for half an hour the first time I saw her, but the gal just drags down matches. All the people on commentary squabbling at the same time just got really annoying and took away from the match. Layla & Maryse did get the win but there's just nothing here. *1/4

The Miz vs. Kofi Kingston - Fun singles match and a good showing for both wrestlers. There was some good back and forth action during the match with both of them getting in a good amount of offense on the other. Kofi's energy is just downright infectious and Miz continues to improve at a steady pace in my view. This match wasn't as good as The Miz vs. Bryan on Raw and I think that these two could've pulled out a much better match. Alberto Del Rio comes down to the ring and provides a slight distraction to Kofi, allowing Miz to hit the SCF a little past the 10 minute mark. Kofi looked strong against the reigning WWE Champion, The Miz gained a solid victory over a game mid-card champ and a little more fuel is added to the Kofi/Del Rio feud. **3/4

Santino Marella & Vladimir Koslov vs. Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel - Too short to really be much of anything. Pretty much follows the same formula that they've been using here. Santino hits The Cobra and looks like he has the win until The Corre interferes and beats them down. Big Show comes down to the ring and does his thing. We get a nice little tease of Big Show & Big Zeke locking horns and the crowd really wanted to see it, but it didn't happen. *1/2

Ziggler Corronation - The whole set up was a great way to put heat on Dolph Ziggler and Vickie, not that Vickie needs it but you get my point. Teddy Long showing up was expected of course and we find out that Vickie & Dolph were ultimately responsible for Teddy being put out and all. Vickie turns on Dolph at the drop of a hat, way to stand by your man sweetness. Teddy Long then rehires Edge and makes a match for the title. This was pretty expected but it did have some real energy to it. The live crowd has really been hot for the show and they were eating this up. The angle in which Teddy was taken out was kinda lame and it just felt lazy, but at least it's over with. Thumbs Up

Edge vs. Dolph Ziggler - Part of me really wishes they'd done this a different way because 3 minute title matches just don't do it for me. While this was going on, I just kind of kept hoping that Ziggler wasn't going to be recognized as an official champ. You know, Vickie's abuse of power, the attack of the SD! GM, etc. The match was ok while it lasted but was too quick to really mean much. The crowd loved it but it just felt wrong to me. Edge hits the spear, regains the title and Dolph Ziggler is fired afterward by Teddy Long. The confetti coming down and the na na na na song was a nice touch, so I'm guessing we'll be seeing Ziggler on Raw before too long. *3/4

Overall Show - I thought SD! was a pretty solid show overall, though the overall highlight was probably the 12 man tag match. The crowd was really hot for the show and there was generally a lot of energy just floating around, especially in that first match. The Miz & Kofi Kingston had a good match with one another with Miz getting a mostly clean victory and Kofi looked good against a main eventer. The tag match wasn't anything to speak of nor was the Divas match. I don't like the fact that Ziggler is officially a former WHC of less than 12 minutes. I don't see what "reigns" like this accomplish and it's one of those things that makes people look at the titles as props. It's just one of those things that really bugs me. That being said, I don't let one thing I don't like bring down my overall enjoyment of a show if the show's good. SD! was a pretty solid show last night that delivered a few surprises, some good wrestling, a few moments of nostalgia at the show's past and delivered a good final push for the EC ppv.

Smackdown Hits and Misses February 18th 2011

Smackdown Hits:

The Miz vs. Kofi Kingston: I want to first talk about the fact that this was a terrible pairing with a terrible finish. Miz needed the win going into the EC PPV, and Kofi is all but guaranteed to lose to Del Rio there, so why put these two together? Especially when you consider that the guy losing is your Intercontinental Champion. That being said, the match itself was pretty good. Miz continues to improve all the time, and Kofi is a dynamic wrestler who seemingly brings out the best in every opponent. Kofi once again looked foolish in being distracted by Del Rio, but Miz looked smart at the same time by instantly capitilizing and hitting his finisher. A good win for Miz heading into the PPV, and it also furthers the Del Rio/Kofi angle headed into the PPV. Im not a fan of how it happened, but this was a very good match.

12 Man Tag Match: I'm generally not a fan of these multi-man tag matches, but this one was very good. Everybody involved hit their spots, and it was an excellent choice to begin the show to warm up the live crowd. It was very encouraging to see some of the younger players in the match hitting their finishers own against the bigger stars. Specifically Drew McIntyre hitting the FS DDT on Orton was a pleasant surprise for me, as I expected it to be countered into the RKO(Im sure alot of people did as well). This was a fun opening match that got all of the Chamber participants on the go-home show as a way of selling the PPV, so this was a smart move by creative.

Dolph, Vickie, Edge and Teddy Long: I lumped all of these in together, because individually, they would have been misses. Although from the moment Vickie fired Edge and Edge didnt respond in a volatile way you knew Teddy was most likely returning, Vickie is absolutely brilliant at what she does. Coronation ceremonies are generally silly and a cheap way to give a heel a championship, but it played out nicely with the Teddy Long return. Edge defeating Dolph Ziggler in 3 minutes felt like a burial of Ziggler, but it should lead to us seeing the end of Ziggler and Vickie, and a Ziggler move to Raw. It also ended the show on a cliff-hanger, as we're left to guess who the 6th man in the SD Chamber will now be. Well done.

Smackdown Misses:

Eve and Beth Phoenix vs. Maryse and Layla: Forget about the fact that this was a bad match with Diva Champion Eve blowing quite a few spots. Once again, she took the pin. Despite it not being clean, it still made Eve look bad, which continues to add to my confusion as to why she's champion. Outside of her actual championship matches, has Eve WON a match since becoming champion, despite appearing on both shows each week? First she was added to the match she won with no fanfare, and now she's being booked weak. I understand this is likely a set-up for Awesome Kong to destroy her upon debuting, but wouldn't it be much more effective if Eve didn't look like a chump beforehand?

Tag Team Title match: Once again, the tag team titles are used as a backdrop for wrestlers not even involved in the match. WWE used a championship match to continue a feud between two guys most people don't care about in Big Show and Big Zeke, and neither man is vying for a title himself. I know it's just the tag team titles and we aren't supposed to take them seriously, but it's incredibly frustrating to see titles diminished like this. Add that to the fact that Santino had the win on Gabriel after the Cobra and another legitimate wrestler was buried with a comedy bit, and this match/segment was a total disaster.

Overall Show: I thought this was a lackluster show at best. The major storyline was good despite having obvious gaps in logic(Why did Teddy Long wait to appear at the end of the show? Why did Edge seem devoid of emotion upon being fired? Dolph gets an 11 minute title reign and Edge an 11th championship reign?), and it left intrigue into the Smackdown Elimination Chamber. But other then that and the twelve man tag match, the show was practically devoid of any build whatsoever toward the PPV. Miz vs Kofi was a good match and Del Rio's interference made sense, but it didn't get me excited to see the two square off on Sunday at the PPV. The women's division is once again a mess and has been getting progressively worse since Natalya dropped the title, and Eve's tag match on Smackdown is Exhibit A as to why. It also baffles me as to why the Corre gets ANOTHER title shot at the PPV when they lost the title match on Friday. This screams title change, which I have no problem with, but there are far more effective ways of getting there then how they did. I expected more from the historic 600th episode. Overall, I gave Smackdown a C.
