Mike & Mitch's Magical Movie Madness (and some TV shows)

Who are some actors who were one big movie away from reaching their full potential? There's probably a laundry list of these people. Ones that stand out to me anyways are Tim Curry(If they made a movie of Les Miserables 20 years ago then i almost guarantee that he'd be one of the villains be it Javert or Thernardier) & Malcolm McDowell.

I recently finished the first season of Girls. Honestly, I enjoyed the shit out of it. Lena Dunham can be obnoxious as fuck, but Adam Driver compliments her just enough that it makes her tolerable. Also, Zosia Mamet is fine as hell.

I took a peek every now and then at Girls, but nothing caught my interest to stay long enough, and finish a full episode. Well, I would stay for the sporadic shots of nudity, but overall, I just couldn't get into it.

As far as shows go, I just finished the pilot for Under The Dome, and although I hate 90% of the shows on CBS, I liked what I saw. Thought about buying the book, but I haven't read or bought a Stephen King book since Duma Key. I saw Under The Doom at Barnes & Noble a few weeks ago. Thought about buying it before the show started, but the length and size of the book resembled a fucking encyclopedia, so I said to hell with it.

I also enjoyed the premiere of Ray Donovan on Showtime last night. More sleazy than I originally expected, and going off the pilot, the show has a ton of potential with Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight as the two centerpieces.

World War Z was good enough. I'm tempted to check out The Bling Ring, but White House Down does nothing for me. I thought the trailer for The Heat made it look pretty decent, much to my surprise. Melissa McCarthy is funny as shit, and I kind of want to see Sandra Bullock call someone a mother fucker.

I plan on seeing World War Z tomorrow night. Still might change my mind on The Bling Ring, but I'm indifferent to Sofia Coppola's work. The Virgin Suicides is the only Coppola film I truly enjoyed, and I never understood the fuss behind Lost In translation. As far as White House Down Goes, it's something I can wait for at home. And I'm more interested in The Heat for Sandra Bullock, because she's the ideal choice to play McCarthy's foil. Similar to Kristen Wig's role in Bridesmaids, but hopefully Bullock won't be so unbearably annoying and obnoxious.

I like it when strong-jawed brunette women yell at me.

 Nothing wrong with that.

I only just saw this now. I saw the teaser a couple of weeks ago and was so happy that they just completely ignored the third film. Best move they could hope to make.

REC 3 was a massive pile of shit. I actually watched it again not too long ago, and I still hated it. Bringing Angela back, and picking up after 2 is a good move.

Not even tempted by Monsters University? I heard it was really good.

Soon, but I'm waiting for the crowds to die down. School is out, and I just know each theater is packed with screaming kids, so yeah.

I will be seeing Despicable Me 2 maybe this weekend.

Have you seen the first one? I never got around to watching it, and I wanted to give it a try before 2.

I just saw The Maniac...that shit was off the hook good. I told Mitch that I wouldn't be interested in it if it wasn't anywhere near as sleazy and depraved as the original, and I am happy to say that Maniac 2013 exceeded my expectations in both departments.

Damn. Now I have to find this and take the time to watch it. Elijah Wood looked fantastic in the trailers, so I'm not too surprised. Wood has a good amount of depth and versatility as an actor, and he's capable of doing so much more. A shame people will mostly remember him for being Frodo, when they look back on his career. I have similar feelings for Johnny Depp, Jack Sparrow, and all those shitty Pirates Of The Caribbean films.

2 more movies for today; Movie 43 and Olympus Has Fallen. Movie 43 is fucking awful, I have no idea what they were thinking when they made it. Olympus Has Fallen was pretty sweet if I'm honest, lots of exciting action and more bloody than I had imagined.

So far, Movie 43 is my top pick for the worst film in 2013. I don't mind crude and vulgar humor, but nothing in Movie 43 was funny. And the post credits scene? Ugh, what a terrible finale. Olympus Has Fallen was a good popcorn flick, but it's part of the reason why I have no desire to watch White House Down in theaters. One White House invasion thriller per year is enough for me.

Tim Curry can do no wrong in my eyes, because his portrayal of Wadsowrth and Mr. Boddy in Clue is one of my all-time favorite comedic performances.

I can't even remember the last Malcolm McDowell film that was worth watching. More recently, he was god awful in the Silent Night remake. Plus, I'll never forgive Rob Zombie and McDowell for simultaneously destroying the Dr. Loomis character in Halloween 2 (2009).

Edward Norton is the first choice that comes to mind. You would've thought he was destined for greatness after Primal Fear and American History X, but his career never took off like it was supposed to. Sure he had Fight Club along the way, and he was pretty damn good in The Incredible Hulk, but he has too many forgettable and mediocre films on his track record, including Red Dragon.

Cuba Gooding, Jr. is another one. After Jerry Maguire, his career tanked, and it tanked fast. I enjoyed Men Of Honor, but Radio and Shadowboxer are two career killers, and that awful comedy, where he sneaks on a cruise ship to woo Roselyn Sanchez.

Tempted to throw Emile Hirsch in here, because of The Darkest Hour, but he's still young. And I haven't seen it, but I heard Killer Joe was pretty good.

I'd even say it's in contention for one of the worst films this decade, though I assume they knew it was going to be shit and intended it to be that way. Yeah, the Elizabeth Banks sketch was dreadful.

Though there's no chance of me catching it in cinema, I've heard some good things about White House Down especially the chemistry between Tatum and Foxx, so I am looking forward to watching it when it's either on DVD or a good torrent is available.

The opening scene with Kate Winslet and Hugh Jackman is my pick for the worse, with Halle Berry's truth or dare fiasco in the runner up spot. The novelty of name celebrities constantly humiliating themselves probably sounded like a good idea. But you know, they forgot about the humor part.

Gladly passed on White House Down for World War Z this morning, and for now, it was the right choice. Was hoping for more David Morse, but I still had a good time (in 3D).

And to no one's surprise, The Lone Ranger is receiving mostly negative feedback so far.

Yeah, Girls is a very niche show. Either people are going to like or not care about its existence at all.

I'm hoping I'll get to the theaters this weekend to see Despicable Me 2. Love me some Dreamworks.

I just finished the Evil Dead remake. Nothing too special but very fun. Jane Levy was extremely good in it.

Monsters University was a lot of fun. I actually wrote a review. Mitch, if you want I could really use some help with a film & TV website I just got up and running. I just need reviews of this, that and the other thing. Really just looking for content at this point.

Get it? It's a Price Is Right pun. :p

Never been able to get into the Shrek or Kung Fu Panda films. Tried countless times, but nothing clicked for me.

Levy was amazing. I'm still shocked they were able to get away with all that blood and gruesome gore, and escape an NC-17 rating. Also, did you see the post-credits scene with.....

Bruce Campbell?

Dying to get my hands on the Blu-Ray or DVD (still undecided) in a few weeks.

Clever pun and cool logo, but I'd have to say no. I just enjoy being a loner, when it comes to my movie reviews.

I never realised what a talented actress she is. I saw her in Suburgatory but didn't really pay much attention.

I did notice it, but unfortunately I've not caught previous ones so it was a little lost on me. Hopefully on the weekend I can catch up on the original Raimi ones.

Yeah, I caught my first glimpse of Levy in Fun Size. An average little kiddy Halloween comedy, but Levy delivered the best performance by far.

So I thought I bring something new in here. The idea of posting a favorite or memorable movie scene (or scenes, I guess) each day popped into my head, so I figure I'd give it a try. Other contributions are always welcome.

Casino- The Wire Tapping Scene

I chose this scene for a few reasons:

1. It's not an obvious choice (i.e. anything that doesn't involve De Niro, Pesci, Stone, or Frank Vincent).

2. It's funny as shit. You can probably point to any other Pesci scene in Casino for laughs, but Piscano's tirade is still hilarious. Oh, and Scorsese's mother played Piscano's mother in this scene.

Every time I watch the scene from Oz season 1 where Wangler, Adibisi, and O'Reily are getting educated by the teacher and Wangler just busts out with a "SHUT THE FUCK UP!" I lose it. It is such a perfectly timed scene that shows the humor and absolute terror/ignorance that is rampant in Oz. What makes it better is O'Reilys little chuckle in the end which just emphasis's how random and dangerous it is.

I lent a friend my complete box set of Oz. They returned it without the second disk of season 3.

Painful, shameful shit.

That's actually one of the nicer revenges Oz has witnessed I think; rape, spoon-anal insertion, crucifixion, making someone believe you had a friend rape them, framing someone innocent by committing suicide.

Yeh, wall death sounds alright.

The spoon rape episode was the first one I ever saw and it stuck with me a solid 10-12 years before I actually watched the entire series. Truly traumatic experience.

Secret Window- "I HAVE THE GOD DAMN MAGAZINE!"

(Fast forward to 3:38 for the scene I'm talking about.)

Not as good as The Shining, Misery, or Carrie (tempted to put it over Pet Sematary), but still one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations.

This scene marks a major turning point in Secret Window after Greenleaf and Ken are murdered, forcing Mort to deal with Shooter. The metaphors are one of the main reasons why this scene is my second favorite in Secret Window. They're funny and dark at the same time ("I will burn your life and every person in it like a cane field in a high wind"). Others complained about it, but changing the ending from the book didn't bother me. The chemistry between Depp and Turturro was just fantastic, and next to Barton Fink, Secret Window features my second favorite Turturro performance ever.

Watched some post-apocalyptic vampire flick called Stake Land with Danielle Harris the other night. Surprised the hell out of me, and I actually enjoyed it.

I have just finished watching the new GI Joe. What a load of shit. The only thing that could have possibly saved it was the chemistry between Rock and Tatum, and that went out the window.

Retaliation was slightly better than Rise Of Cobra, but that's nothing to brag about. Just another underwhelming mainstream action flick with cool 3D effects, and that's about it.

The ninja mountain sequence was pretty enjoyable.

I was in one of those, "It doesn't have to make sense, it just needs to be loud and stupid" moods when I saw it so I liked the film a bit more than I probably should have. Won't buy it on bluray but if its on Netflix or TV I may give it another watch.

Sorry I haven't been around a lot lately... Shit happens. Most of the time, "shit" is just me forgetting the forums exist for a week, and then being bored and realizing there's probably 3 new threads dedicated to how terrible I am.

MOVIES I'VE SEEN RECENTLY!!!

Kung Pow - How had I not seen this movie? I clearly have no friends, because if I did one of them should have sensed my Kung Pow virginity, and popped that cherry years ago. I did not stop laughing.

Cabin in the Woods - I saw this in theaters when it came out. I still enjoy it, although it lost something since the first time, for me. I still love how intentionally ridiculous the end is.

Star Trek: Wrath of Khan - Yeah, I wasn't into Trek as a kid, so don't judge me. I recently saw Into Darkness and loved it, so I had to go back and see what all the fuss was about. I'm going to guess it's much better if you're TOS fan. Thought it was good, but not the greatest sci-fi film ever, as many will claim. Maybe this is totally a ridiculous statement, but I actually liked Into Darkness more. I liked Abram's idea of Khan much better than the original. Cumberbatch was bad ass, and had a reason for being the way he was. He was also a cerebral villain, very dark and genuinely disturbing at times. Original Khan was...I'm just gonna say it...kind of a whiny bitch that got all his people killed.

The fight on the mountain was pretty good. Too bad they gave away some of the best parts in the trailers. And yeah, I wouldn't buy either film. I can remember Rise Of Cobra being apart of a buy three get two free sale at the place, where I buy most of movies a while ago. Could've picked up Rise Of Cobra, but I passed on it for Mortal Kombat instead.

Cabin in the Woods I still love how intentionally ridiculous the end is.

I recognized the voice over the loud speakers as the guy and girl were trying to find a way out, but revealing Sigourney Weaver as The Director was a great shock regardless.

That's one of the main reasons why I adore Cabin In The Woods. Just when you think you might have an idea of where the story is going, they throw another shocking twist at you. The entire movie is one giant mind-fuck, and Cabin In The Woods is satire at its finest.

Saw Pacific Rim this afternoon, and it was awesome. I wanted 3D, but I had to pass on it, because the showing times ran into my work schedule. I guess they needed to have a ton of showings for fucking Grown Ups 2, and only two 3D showings for Pacific Rim the entire day and into the night. Hope I didn't miss anything special.

Pan's Labyrinth is still my favorite Guillermo del Toro film, but I would put Pacific Rim over both Hellboy films. And I still can't believe the lukewarm reception Pacific Rim is getting. Some people will fight or refuse to just have fun with a movie now a days. Mind-boggling stuff. A 72% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the people comparing it to Bay's Transformers films? Ugh.

Glad to hear/read that you liked it. Looking forward to it (hopefully) coming to my local cinema and I give it a watch then. It looks like so much fun.

I'm gonna bump this thread.

Now for something TV related i just started watching Oz.
