Let's Talk Tipping

So, how do you tip? Here's my standard:

1) Dine-in at a restaurant with server: 20% of the bill.

2) Delivery: $3 flat. I've never ordered above $30 worth of food but I might consider giving more if I ordered more than $45 worth of food. I'll tip $2 to $3 extra if it's raining or snowing.

3) Tip jars: JACK SHIT.

4) Carryout: JACK SHIT.

I'd like to add that the last two piss me off to no end. In the case of tip jars, you're already getting paid fairly for your job, I'm not going to give you anything extra. In the case of carryout, I don't care if you only make $2.00 an hour. It takes you 10 seconds to bring my food to me from the back. If you don't like it, tell your asshole boss to bring my food to me instead.

Dine-In - 18% minimum for quality service. It's easier this way in Kentucky as sales tax is 6% so just triple the tax and that's the tip. If it's good I'll go up to twenty or just round up to the nearest full dollar amount. Even if the service is horrible I'll leave a buck or so.

Delivery - A few bucks of the change, depending on the speed.

Restaurant: 10%

Delivery: The change, if any, so a few pennies.

Tip jars: JACK SHIT

Carryout: JACK SHIT

Well I'm in the UK so it's possible we do things a little differently... but I feel like an asshole now.

Naw, you have it different there (Europe in general does) than in the US. Restaurants in the UK pay their employees fairly. Here, delivery people make minimum wage and serves/waiters get paid $2.13 an hour; tips make up the difference for them.

20% at a dine in. Since I live in a rather rural area I don't get delivery but if I did I doubt it'd be much more than $2-3 bucks, unless it's a large order.

I tip as well as I'm served. If a waiter is on his/her shit and is obviously working hard, I hook em up with a 10 spot or so, depending on what I have. If they suck and are playing on their phone or something rather than taking care of their customers, I'll leave my spare change on the table. Fuck em.

Delivery drivers get 2 bucks unless for some reason they're coming from far away. I always do carry-out though. I'll be damned if I'm tipping a cashier, they're easily doing the least amount of work in their establishment.

20% for dining in, maybe a few bucks extra if the service was great or we were being difficult for some reason. For delivery, I give the guy $2. If they have a tip jar, I'll dump the coins in there unless I have quarters, in which case I'm keeping those bad boys for laundry day. And I don't think I've ever done carryout, so I guess I don't tip those people anything.

Tip: Minimum 20% unless very rare scenarios

Delivery: 5 bucks (I've always lived in pretty remote areas

Tip Jar: Generall my change. I hate coins.

Carry Out- once again any coins I have.

I go up to the nearest round fiver generally for dining in. If I get delivery, I usually pay by card so I can't tip, and take away/tip jars get fuck all.

Dine-in: WHatever the fuck I feel like, based upon service. Could be 1%, could be 100%. If someone is a shithead, I am sure to leave a dime on the table or some such. Other times, ive tipped 55$ on a 50$ tab. Its all up to the server and their effort.

Delivery: usually whatever the change is, most time 6 -9 $

Tip Jars and such, usually whatever my clinky change is

I've never really understood why tipping is mandatory in the states, from the times I've been there the services I've received have been pretty crap, so why should I reward bad work? I pay in exact amounts when I go out, so it's bad luck to them if they think they can steal some of my change - what else am I going to put on my public transport card??

That said, if I get a waiter who's damn good at their job, or if its the cute Japanese chick at my local sushi place, I'll chuck them an extra $5 or something because they've earnt it for being awesome and/or cute.

It's because waiters are paid less than minimum wage and only get by on their tips. If someone doesn't tip them, they're in trouble.

I generally tip 15% for sit in, but sometimes more depending on the restaurant and service. At a high end restaurant spending $25 or more a plate I feel like a douche not tipping well, even though there have been times I've undertipped and pissed people off simply because I didn't have allot of extra cash to spend on tips... usually on vacation.

I'll tip a buck or two for hair cuts and carry out - even though I rarely, rarely do carry or take out.

I'm not a believer in automatic gratuity, where they simply add the tip to your bill regardless of quality of service. Generally speaking at a dine in establishment, I'm tipping 20%, but if the service sucks, or the food is bad, I've got no problem leaving no tip at all. Frankly, I don't care how much the waiters or waitresses are being paid. If they're good, I'll tip them appropriately, but same goes if they stink.

For delivery, a couple of bucks, usually to the nearest multiple of five. For carry out or tip jars, nothing.

I don't believe in "customer service" and shit like that. If someone's paid a shit wage, I don't expect extraordinary service. I tip for them just to deal with me.

You can get paid less than the minimum wage in the us? That's pretty messed up

It someone doesnt tip them, then they should probably do a better job. One would think such a financial situation would drive motivation. Often not the case.

True, which is why I have no problem leaving a very small tip if the service sucks. At the end of the day though, they're catering to my whims which is worth more than two bucks an hour.

This. I can't stand that.

Were the handcuffed and forced into slave labor with a gun to their head? No? So then they voluntarily accepted this wage structure of their own free will? Well then.

Also, I could give two fucks on how much the bill is. Wht if all they did was bring two drinks and two plates? Piss off.

Thats THEIR JOB THEY SIGNED UP FOR though. The majority of their income is untracked, non taxable, 100% profit for them. Its easy to rack up very solid money on a day to day basis for that, simply for talking to people, being attentive, and having a positive disposition. I think all of you have a bit of unfounded pity for this group.

I go up or down a slight bit from 20% depending on service or if I'm at the place a lot. My establishments I regular I tend to always go 20% then round up to the nearest dollar.

Carryout doesn't get shit, ever since I had a car I don't do delivery, and tip jars occasionally get my small non-quarter change because I hate change. I usually put my pennies in tip jars because pennies are shitty ass annoying crap that would be better off going away.

Oh yeah, and if I have any sort of deal or coupon or what-have-you for a big price off, I always tip off of not the total but of what the original total was before the discount.

My grandmother was a waitress for 25 years. The stories I've heard of jerks who leave nothing are enough founding for me.
