Let's Talk Tipping

15% is my base for dining in; it goes up or down from there depending on how the service is.

Delivery tends to get $3.

If there's a tip jar and it's a rare occasion I don't pay with a card, I might give them my non-quarters.

Pretty sure restaurants have to make up the difference if they don't hit minimum wage but as NorCal alluded to what they do is report just enough to make minimum wage and then pocket the rest tax free.

They do.

Also, If you ever get your food hopped to you at a Sonic and you don't tip, you're a ******. Those bitches run all over the place for hours making 4 bucks an hour. If you're too broke to tip, go through the damn drive thru. Oh, and the chick running the window is getting paid minimum wage, if you were ever wondering.

It isnt mandatory is they do a shitty job. thats something I think a lot of people misunderstand...aint a damn fucking thing mandatory, its MY (or your) money.

Damn. I thought it was because for the first couple of places i went to I didn't leave a tip (we don't do that in Australia) and got chased down the street by waiters telling me i didn't leave a big enough tip. Motherfuckers swindled me didn't they.... cost of being foreign i guess

I'm generally around 15% but that can go up or down depending on the quality of service for dine in meals. If it is a place like a buffet where I'm responsible for getting my own food, and the waiter/waitress only brings me drinks then it drops to around 10.

The only real carry out places I go to are Sonic, so they usually get whatever change I would get back unless it is more than five dollars. I live in a rural area, so there are no delivery places close by. The one time in my life I got delivery was when my girlfriend and I went on vacation and I had pizza delivered to our room. He put me on the spot and I ended up tipping $7.

Those tip jars next to cash registers at frozen yogurt or coffee places can go to hell though.

I'll tip a buck or two for hair cuts

The guy who cuts my hair is making a killing off my tips, deserves it too. He doesn't speak english so i just point at his hair, then point to mine, chuck him a $20 and sit in the chair. <3 that guy.

Never tipped on a haircut. Don't understand the concept. The person cutting hair is getting paid a price they decide on and if they do a shit job they lose customers. Seems no reason to tip.

They do.

Damn. I feel like an ass now, I didnt know those folks only made 4$ an hour. Ive been to sonic literally twice in my life, today included, so I didnt know what to do. No tip. lulz.

No, it isnt mandatory in any way. just a major dick move if they deserved a tip, which unless they were truly the drizzling shits, is aout 15% of the bill

The haircut guy takes around 4 minutes, doesn't annoy you by speaking and is the only guy who gives me haircuts that don't make me look like my romanian friend's mother. I appreciate not looking like a middle aged romanian woman.

all the waiter did was bring me a muffin that i asked for at the counter, which could have easily been served over the counter.

I think tipping to the extent we do in America is kind of bullshit but I do it mainly because I can afford to. I also feel like there should be some law of diminishing returns. Why does how much the food costs matter so much? It is basically the same job. Four people dine at a ten dollars a plate restaurant then the tip is 8 dollars, make that a 30 dollar a plate place them bastards are getting 25 dollars an hour just from me. Then people get indignant when you say food preparation issues shouldn't effect the waiter. Well who the fuck are they supposed to effect in the restaurant because it sure as hell effected me. I also don't understand why all items are considered equally "challenging" provide. If I got a dollar every time I opened a beer I'd be rich.

Yea, I dont fuck around like that either. Though generally a resturant with higher prices also has serves who provide excellent service, so it kinda makes up for the bill price thing.

Well I don't know where you live so the number's probably a little different. Minimum wage is 7.25 here and the carhops make 4.15 or some shit like that.

I know a lot of people assume they make the minimum wage and shit they probably should. Most of those girls, at least the ones I've worked with, make shit for tips.

and thats the fault of those jerks, who aint shit. Doesnt change what should be expected of anyone now.

True, which is why I'm only going to leave a good tip if the service is good, which it usually is. Even the worst sevice I've ever had got something right so I left a little something.

I guess my issue is that no matter how excellent you are at being a waiter, you are still a waiter. It isn't a highly skilled job and they shouldn't be paid at such under any circumstances.

I'm not sure I'd agree on it being not highly skilled. It's a bit harder than it sounds to take care of every table you're working at in good time and without getting on their nerves. Also you're constantly on your feet and have to be courteous and polite yet still deal with jerks. I agree it's not rocket science but it's a bit trickier than it seems.

you should always leave something when the service is shitty. If you leave nothing they think you forgot. If you leave a quarter they recognize you stiffed them and have to think about it. If you leave a note saying that they were a bitch and deserve nothing that's even better.

It's kind of a cheapskate way for the restaurant to not have to pay their employees. They pass it off on the customers.

I've never not tipped at a dine-in restaurant. My grandmother would have my head if I didn't.

Don't mistake not skilled with easy. Then again they can write everything down and they often have help bringing the food out. Why is it so hard to not cuss people out at work again?

Food/customer service jobs suck dick. I'm nice to my servers simply because I don't want spit on my burgers and pubes in my coke, but aside from being on your feet all day it isn't a super hard job.

This is true. I have no idea how they can get an order wrong when they have a pen and paper. Write the table number and "Guy in blue shirt - 8oz sirloin well done". Takes ten seconds tops.
