The difference between Cena and Punk is that the WWE built cena from the ground up. His OVW gimmick says it all, he was a "Prototype" for every big guy wrestler that only has 4 or 5 moves they can do well.
Punk, on the other hand, came up through the indy's and actually got to experience a bunch of different styles of wrestling and learn from a wide variety of talents. You might say Punk wasn't ready for his championship run, but I would argue he was more ready than any other young star in recent memory.
And lets not forget that while he may have been in the WWE a relatively short amount of time but he has been having pro matches against people like Eddie Guerrero, AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and Raven for years before he came to "the show"
