There are two conferences, and AFC and the NFC, that are part of the same league, the NFL. Each conference has their own playoff to determine their champion and then each conference's champion meets in the Super Bowl.
On the NFC side we have the San Francisco 49ers who had a first round bye and beat the Packers and Falcons to become the NFC Champions. They are lead by quarterback Colin Kaepernick who took over for Alex Smith towards the end of the season. Kaepernick is unproven in the playoffs, but he has a strong arm and is a good runner which makes him a constant threat to defenses. The 49ers biggest strength, however, is their defense. They allowed the third lowest yards per game this season and ranked 4th in both passing and rushing defense, meaning relying on either one strategy spells doom for their opposing team. Perhaps more importantly they allowed the second fewest points per game with 17.1.
On the AFC side we have the Baltimore Ravens who beat the Indianapolis Colts handily in their first playoff game, an OT game against the Denver Broncos that had the entire Chesapeake Bay holding their collective breath, and finally defeating the New England Patriots in a game where few people gave the Ravens a chance. The Ravens are lead by one of the most charismatic players to grace the NFL, Ray Lewis. Lewis plays middle linebacker for the team and is widely considered to be one of the best at the position of all time. This is his last season, making this unexpected playoff run an even more compelling story.
Unlike the 49ers and their impressive stat line, the Ravens were just average on both sides of the ball this regular season. They ranked 16 in total offense and 17 in total defense, putting them in the middle of the pack in both categories. Their success in the playoffs can be attributed to their quarterback, Joe Flacco, playing much better than most folks give him credit for and the hard work of wide receivers Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin, as well as the no-quit work ethic of both his running backs, Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce.
The 49ers are our friend NorCal's favorite NFL team (unless he's more of an Oakland Raiders fan, but I think he likes them evenly), but IC25 will likely be rooting for the Ravens as the 49ers eliminated his favorite team, the Packers. I will be rooting for the 49ers because they are my favorite NFC team (I'm a Jets fan, and they're in the AFC).
Any questions?
