Nice, I very much enjoy Mario Maker. It's quite easy to get into making the levels once you start.
OK so I only quoted you so that (if you use them) you'd get a quote notification and be brought back to the thread for an important query I need to ask you (and other Nintendo/Pokemon people).

Red, Blue or Yellow? My 3DS needs an OG Pokemon game.

Red, Blue or Yellow? My 3DS needs an OG Pokemon game.

Yellow is the best. I like Blue personally but that is more out of nostalgia than anything as it was first. Yellow gets you all three of Red/Blue's starters via story events and you start with Pikachu.

I have Yellow because that was my first as a kid. I do believe it is easily the best, but I might be biased. I believe Kotaku had a nice breakdown of the differences between all 3

There's more of a difference between Red and Blue besides a few different Pokemon?

Of the three go for Yellow as it offers a bit more.

Red and Blue depends which Pokémon you prefer. I went for Blue as that was the game I got on release day.

So I was playing A.O. on normal and had a great time until I got to Deathstroke.

I died at least 4 dozen times if not more. I restarted on easy and beat him the first time I got to him this morning.

In Yellow it is possible to obtain all 3 starters without trading, which I considered to be a huge draw in the pre-online trading world. However you'll need to acquire a separate Pikachu to evolve it as your own will just refuse.

why would you want to evolve Pikachu?

Ah, Stormy Stormy Stormy. There are two very important reasons why you'd want to do that:

1) Pokédex completion;

2) Because no Light Ball in gen I means Pikachu is an early-game unevolved mon who will never get stronger. It's flimsy as fudge even if it does have very good speed for a base form. For the sake of comparison I feel compelled to point out that Magikarp also has excellent speed for the point at which it becomes available (80, only 10 below Pikachu's base 90), but you wouldn't leave Magikarp unevolved (I expect I've now earned the ire of classic fans by comparing these two). Hilariously, for a bit of trivia, Magikarp's speed barely increases when becoming Gyarados (80 -> 81).

Raichu, on the other hand, is quite good in game for a stone evolver and learns its necessary moves relatively early on. Ideally in Yellow you'd be evolving into Raichu as soon as you learn Thunderbolt (Lv 26), but you can't. Based on Gen I stats without Light Ball, Raichu's offensive bases are almost the double of Pikachu's (55/50 --> 90/90).

Playing through Yellow, you can feel Pikachu lagging behind halfway through. I could go on about the myriad ways in which Pikachu is just terrible. You can use it if you want and probably get through the game with it as part of your team, but it'll induce unnecessary headaches to try to use something so pitifully weak compared to creatures with evolved forms or stats more befitting the endgame. The start also forces you to catch specific things early on for the one or two moves that can take Rock-types without extreme over-grinding.

In games where the Light Ball exists and is easily obtainable, Pikachu actually is a reasonable alternative to Raichu as it pumps up its offences to maintain at least some form of mid-late game presence, even if it's still paper-thin defensively.

This didn't need an essay response since Pikachu is just about usable, but I saw the opportunity to drop some knowledge as to why Pikachu is extremely underwhelming and a terrible starter to force on the player. Fortunately Yellow more than makes up for this by giving you all three of the others, who can easily hang at endgame level when fully evolved.

The squad choices certainly picked up after Zaedd and Jacob.

I wish I could have gotten Legion sooner too.

Shepard should have had flashbacks when fighting the thresher maw with Grunt.

Aside from your choices, it would be interesting to know how the choice of who dies on approach to the Collector base is made. Loyalty? What if you have earned the loyalty of all squad members? Random chance?

Lost Thane, Jacob and Zaeed on the final mission so not disappointed at all.

The human Reaper was rather horrifying.

Could have done with more directly from Harbinger in the way Sovereign made itself known.

Going to finish a couple of missions before moving on to ME3.

I think it has to do with ship upgrades. There are three ship upgrades for purchase and if you don't get them all, people die on the approach.

Losing Thane is going to hurt in Mass Effect 3. Did you do his loyalty mission first?

Legion is my favorite squadmate in Mass Effect.

Why would Shepard have flashbacks when fighting the thresher maw? Those things are crazy, by the way: reproduce with spores that can travel through space.

Understandable, but how was the choice made to kill Thane? Because of a specific upgrade missed? Maybe something to do with the Life Support?

Poor boring Jacob getting shot in the face was fantastic.

I had done, yes. Quite an interesting one tracking the Turian politician to find Kolyat.

Thane was a strange one for me. His story was interesting enough as are the drell, but there was little connection with him from me.

Legion is my favorite squadmate in Mass Effect.

I like him too. He is probably second only to Tali for me. Should've been introduced earlier. His development could be fun, especially if they add in more of a personality and maybe a sense of humour like Mordin (his advice to Shepard regarding Jack was hilarious).

A good Geth was one of my wants/predictions. Plenty of room for more Geth/Quarian intrigue and Tali/Legion interaction.

If I had another prediction it would be a rebel Reaper.

Was it not threshers that killed Shepard's unit on Akuze?

Sounds like Karpyshyn was channelling the back story of the Sarlaac there.

So I have an extra key of Shadowrun: Dragonfall Director's Cut on PC via Steam for giveaway. I got it in the most recent Humble Bundle but I already own it.

Soooooo first come first serve or if enough people are interested I'll just think of a number and closest one gets it.

Turn-based RPG game set in a cyberpunk dystopia?

I'll take it if it hasn't already gone. One of the tabletop systems I've been dying to try tbh.

Maybe. I was under the impression that if you didn't upgrade a particular part of your ship, a whole chunk of your crew got killed, not one random guy. But then again, I never experienced that; you see, I'm a good commander.

:p

Okay, then I think things will be okay in Mass Effect 3.

There's a lot of fan love for Thane. I think it's partially because he's so mysterious and partially because he's kind of got the machine gun preacher thing going on. I always liked Thane, probably a top 5 companion for me.

Ah who am I kidding, there's no WAY I could make a top 5 squadmate list. Maybe top 3.

I TOLD you you'd get into the Geth! They're my favorite species, hands down.

I'm surprised you like Tali so much. I certainly have a soft spot for her, but something keeps me from falling in love with her the way I have with Liara, Legion, Wrex, Miranda, Mordin... I could go on. I did romance her in one playthrough and she was a little more interesting to me in that run, but overall she's a second tier character for me.

As for Legion... I don't know if Geth have humor. He certainly has some funny moments, but not because he intends to be funny.

Good thing you didn't lose him.

A good Geth was one of my wants/predictions. Plenty of room for more Geth/Quarian intrigue and Tali/Legion interaction.

Oh just you wait.

If I had another prediction it would be a rebel Reaper.

Yeah I don't know if that's even possible.

Was it not threshers that killed Shepard's unit on Akuze?

Oh that's right, it was. Of all my knowledge of Mass Effect (and it is extensive), the various backstories of Shepard are a bit of a blind spot. I believe that's the sole survivor background? These choices make almost no difference in how he game plays out, just in some dialogue options and I think a mission in the first game.

Sounds like Karpyshyn was channelling the back story of the Sarlaac there.

I think that's a Star Wars reference? If it is, I don't get it. If it's not, I really don't get it.

:p

I assume that that means you would only lose the two team members in the Collector base, the pipe crawler and the other team leader?

Okay, then I think things will be okay in Mass Effect 3.

That machine gun preacher idea makes him an interesting character but not necessarily an interesting individual to me, if that makes sense.

Ah who am I kidding, there's no WAY I could make a top 5 squadmate list. Maybe top 3.

I think I could name a top 5, more because there are quite a few I could not give a flying fuck about.

I'm surprised you like Tali so much. I certainly have a soft spot for her, but something keeps me from falling in love with her the way I have with Liara, Legion, Wrex, Miranda, Mordin... Liara does nothing for me. Wouldn't even have her in a second tier. She'd be down in a bottom level with Zaeed and Jacob for me.

Not sure why but I just found her so incredibly bland in ME 1 that it was hard to get passed. Maybe because she is an archaeologist?

I think that's a Star Wars reference? If it is, I don't get it. If it's not, I really don't get it.

Yeah, Karpyshyn, one of the writers of ME, has written several excellent Star Wars novels.

The Sarlaac is the big gaping maw that Jabba the Hutt tries to feed Luke, Han etc. to in Return of the Jedi. Sarlaac can float through space like how you describe the thresher maw.

Interesting opening to ME3 with the attack, although I did not like the sidelining of Shepard as a plot device. Certainly nowhere near as good as him being dead... When will he learn that he needs a spacesuit camera to make himself believed!

Although apparently three dozen eye witnesses were not enough so it appears the Alliance and the Council are just stupid.

Nope, nobody has to die if you play your cards right. If you picked an expert hacker (Kassumi, Tali, or Legion) as a pipe crawler, they would have lived so long as they were loyal. If you picked someone with high leadership skills for the team leader (Garrus, Miranda, and Jacob), they would live as well, again, so long as they were loyal.

Yeah, it's a cool archetype and they execute it fairy well with Thane, but I can see why he's not for everyone.

I could do tier lists, but that's about it. There are very few characters I don't give a flying fuck about (Ashley).

Speaking of favorite characters though, if you managed to keep Wrex alive, guess who would have been sitting on the throne when you arrived to Tunchanka so that Grunt can go through puberty.

I hope sex with Ashley was worth it.

ME 1 Liara kind of sucks. ME 2 Liara starts to develop into a more interesting character as she starts working for the Shadow Broker. ME 3 Liara is a bad ass.

Also, if you're playing as a character that uses biotics, having he as a squadmate is hugely helpful as you can detonate combo skills with her.

I knew what a Sarlaac was, but I did not know they reproduce that way.

Apparently they were also inspired by sand worms from the novel Dune. I know less about Dune than I do about Star Wars, though that may be overstating how much I know about Dune because I have a pretty solid knowledge of Star Wars.

They'll all be changing their tune soon.

Mass Effect 3 allows you to experience the perverse joy of being proven right by something terrible happening.

Ah, I see.

I still like how my story panned out, even if Thane got an unheroic death. For everyone to survive such a suicide mission would be unrealistic.

I could do tier lists, but that's about it. There are very few characters I don't give a flying fuck about (Ashley).

The likes of Zaeed, Jacob, Kaiden and Liara would be in my bottom tier.

Thane and Garrus would be borderline.

Jack, Samara, Ashley and Wrex-lite Grunt would be in a middle tier.

Mordin would be borderline.

Miranda, Wrex, Tali and Legion would be at the top.

Early ME3 Ashley does not have good signs. She lost a lot of brownie points in her brief ME2 appearance, especially when she was replaced by a better character in Miranda. Her maturing might just remove any remaining interest by making her completely bland.

The new guy, Cortez, seems like he might just be Jacob 2.0.

Speaking of favorite characters though, if you managed to keep Wrex alive, guess who would have been sitting on the throne when you arrived to Tunchanka so that Grunt can go through puberty.

I hope sex with Ashley was worth it.

My choices over Wrex are not ones I would have changed. He asked for it.

ME 1 Liara kind of sucks. ME 2 Liara starts to develop into a more interesting character as she starts working for the Shadow Broker. ME 3 Liara is a bad ass.

I just don't like her. Her mother, Diana Troi, was far more interesting.

Smash Bros. Players; I'm curious about the tournament function of online play, and am wondering if there is interest to get a Wrestlezone tournament going. Anyone?
