New England Patriots of course.
New England Patriots of course.
Of course it's the most watched program in history, it's the fucking Super Bowl. Green Bay/Pittsburgh will almost definitely surpass it this year. The most exciting and most popular NFL team today, the New Orleans Saints.
And before someone tries to argue that fact about popularity, the Saints/Colts Super Bowl game is the most watched program in history, and the Saints/Falcons MNF game from this year was the most watched cable program in history before the Auburn/Oregon game. Saints have that "Greatest show on Turf" thing going. Not to mention people just love Drew Brees since he's the fucking man.

The Jets had the highest Divisional round TV rating in 14 years, and the AFC Championship Game had a 31.3, the highest in 24 years. Who gives a shit about ratings specific to Cable TV. In the complete ratings including all TV, the Jets win.
And this Greatest Show on Turf thing? Defense wins Championships. Look at the 4 teams in the Conference Championships, arguably the 4 best defenses in the NFL this year. The Saints "Greatest Show on Turf" got beat in the playoffs by an under .500 team because their D was so damn terrible it wasn't funny. Offense get the glory. Defense wins Championships (consistently). The Saints won last year BECAUSE they finally had a non-shit D. That didn't last.
because the ratings are growing annually. Last year was the first one to do it. This year will beat last year. Next year will beat this year. Then how come all the Super Bowls before last year didn't surpass the MASH finale?
Actually, I'd beg to differ. They are a fun team to watch. Have you watched any of their games this year? Always close games, big-play potential from the WRs, good running game, they are better to watch then you give them credit for. Is their offense as explosive as the Saints? No. Is the Defense? Yes.Jets are a popular team as well. No one's denying that. They're popular though because of their charisma and big mouths... not because they're a fun team to watch.
I would preface that to most. There are people who prefer D. I happen to be one of those. To me there's nothing better then seeing a Corner going step for step with a receiver, following his every move, and making a play on a ball not intended for him. Only thing close is a well designed, well executed Blitz, where (at least) one guy comes free thanks to good defensive execution, not a poor blocking scheme. As true as this may be, do people watch for Defense? No, they watch for offense. That's why the league has been catering the rules for the offensive side of the ball these past few years... it's what sells tickets and gets ratings. And the Saints have had the best, most exciting offense and style of play the last 2 years. Fact.
so the entire D was catered around 1 man? That's hardly a good D. In fact, there really isn't any D in the NFL that is completely catered around 1 man. Don't try to say the Jets are, because they are far from it (they played well without him, and I'd argue that Revis might end up being not even the best player on this D when it's all said and done, David Harris is a fucking beast). Also, about that jab at the Saints defense... our best defensive player was hurt for the game, which is why they looked so terrible. If Malcolm Jenkins had been playing that game it would have gone a whole lot differently. Instead it was our run stopper safety and a 40 year old covering Seattle's wide receivers.
Seriously man, think about this for a second, the Saints defense was ranked 4th in the League during the regular season, and Malcolm Jenkins was our best player, who got unfortunately hurt on the last game of the season, so of course that was a big reason why Seattle put up the points they did (and besides the big run, all of Seattle's points came off of receivers beating safeties). Injuries are what cost the Saints at another shot to get to the Super Bowl

And they had a whole week to figure out a gameplan to work around him. It's not like he got hurt 2 days before the game. And still, it's the fucking Seahawks, the antithesis of a good passing game. The Jets lost their defensive signalcaller Jim Leonhard to injury the Friday before the Pats game. A week later (with time to gameplan around the injury), the D is back to the excellent D it was before. A good D is able to take an injury, and work around it when given time to gameplan for the injury. The Saints had time, and they didn't do it. No excuses, especially since the offense is hardly a good, even OK offense.
Inspires me to do something.

Assumption, not fact my friend. Time will tell with this one. Feel free to call me out on this though if you end up being right.
I totally agree that their personality is what makes them get more coverage Monday-Saturday. Sunday their play warrants the coverage. The rest of the week the media polarization (more hate then like in the media) of Rex Ryan is what enhances the coverage.I didn't mean that they're not a fun team to watch; I meant their play on the field is only a small part of the reason why people watch and pay attention to them. If they were this humble team like the Colts, the Jets wouldn't get nearly as much coverage as they do. I'm sure you'll agree with this.
Yes, it hurt them. No question it would hurt them, but this brings up 2 things. No, I'm just saying his loss severely hurt the team because the guys behind him were awful (or in Darren Sharper's case, way past his prime at this point).
Yes, those guys are what makes a D go from good to out-fucking-standing. But these guys aren't what makes a D go from bad to good.Sometimes one player missing does impact a great defense. If Ray Lewis hadn't played for the Ravens, would they have won the Super Bowl in 2000? Hell, look at Pittsburgh... with Troy Polamalu they're going to their third Super Bowl in 6 years, while the Steelers missed the playoffs in 2009 because of his absence, and were only a Wild Card team in 2007 because he was plagued with injuries.
No, what I was getting at is that when you have time to gameplan, which the Saints did, you need to be able to work around the problem. The Jets in the 45-3 game never had time to gameplan around the loss of Jim Leonhard, and their terrible communication on defense is proof positive that his loss was crippling that week. give them a full week to game plan for him not being there, and they were back to their very good D, and didn't really lose a step. The Jets had the same time to adjust as the Saints (1 week). They did it, the Saints didn't.See how one player can hurt a defense so much?
The Jets still got slaughtered that week 45-3, and their corners are MUCH better than the Saints. So your point here helps me out since it shows how much one player missing can impact a team. After losing Leonard the Jets lost 3 of their next 4 games, fucking letting CHICAGO score 38 points through 3 quarters, in bad weather no ess. The Jets needed time to adjust, and they fortunately got it. The Saints didn't, and it costs them heavily. Sharper was not in game shape by the Seattle game, and Harper is a run stopper, not a coverage safety. So, there was nothing the Saints could do. Nothing. They had to play in a manner to outscore Seattle, and it just didn't happen.
I'm not saying the Saints were a bad defense this year. What I'm saying is that they had no reason to give up 40+ points to the Seattle Fucking Seahawks, and Mat Hasselbeck, a veteran QB that hasn't played nearly that well in years and who was coming off an injury. The Saints defense being ranked 4th in the league proves though that their defense was far from shit when Malcolm Jenkins was in the line-up. You can't argue it. 4th ranked defense... that means their defense was better than 28 other teams in the NFL, and only ONE spot behind your Jets. And it's not like the Saints had the easiest schedule, either. They limited Pittsburgh to only 10 points in a game, and contained Atlanta to only 14 at their home on MNF, and Tampa Bay to 6 on their own field.
