Cryptic "01/02/2012" Video - Chris Jericho Returns- KEEP IT IN HERE! - NO SPAMMING!

Y'know, this was far from the worst return of all time. It was actually pretty clever, coming out to cheers and leaving booed with out saying a single word is pretty brilliant. And now we'll have to wait another week to see what he has to say. I can bet good money that a lot of people will be tuning in next week. So, another week of good ratings (assuming this weeks episode has good ratings also).

Everyone complains that WWE is too predictable, and that they rush everything without any proper build. But here we have a return where no one was expecting Jericho to ultimately mock the crowd and leave without giving us anything leaving us wanting to find out more but we can't, so we'll have to watch again next week. Finally, there is something different. But still, people have to piss and moan about this. Stop complaining and just enjoy what is happening. Obviously over time, everything will be explained, just enjoy the build that we are going to see over the next few months til the eventual pay-off.

Seriously, if Jericho had came out last night and explained everything down to the last minor detail, why he was back, etc, that would be fucking horrible. Now we have some sort of suspence going on. I for one, love it.

Watching it again I have the same feeling I had last night...happiness.

He didn't need to say anything. Did you all see him pick the mic up and drop it a few times? By the time he got to the top of the ramp the crowd almost started to boo him. He was slowly losing his smile. He just stood there and looked at the crowd...then just walked away.

Everyone was cheering so hard and is so happy he's back, that its going to be a kick in the nuts when he finally does talk and tells everyone to basically piss off. He did his job last night.

All night I told my fiance that we would hear Jericho's music. When it finally hit I marked out. By the time it was all over my fiance was pissed at what he did. I told her that "Jericho did his job then if you're that mad about it".

Like JACK-HAMMER said...just like the Triple H/Taker return last year everyone bitched. Jericho, Triple H, and Undertaker did something though. They showed that a GREAT performer can tell a story and convey emotion with just actions and without words.

Keep watching, I promise there will be a payoff. Last night was NOT the end...it was the BEGINNING OF THE END. Remember...the promos said IT BEGINS 1/2/12!

I said a lot of about the return last night in the live discussion, but coming back on this morning, and reading the comments, I can't help but feel sad. We are so conditioned by the WWE now, because they have a PPV every 3 weeks, to want and expect all the answers to every question right away. We expect back and forth promos, and revealings every week, and when we don't get it, we get pissed. Well, I don't get pissed, but a lot of you do. It is sad that you think Jericho's return sucked because this is how a feud and storyline is SUPPOSED to be built up. It is supposed to be built up slowly, with answers coming at a snail's pace, so you get hooked, and want to find out what happens next. Jericho's return was absolutely brilliant last night, but in the Modern WWE world, most of us can't see that. A lot of people just are pissed that he didn't talk, and he didn't give us answers, and who was the girl? Why didn't they give us the girl, and why isn't he feuding with Punk right away? So, they put him in the feud with punk, 3 months out for Mania, and they bury Ziggler, who is just starting to get a push? Gah, it is just sad how conditioned people are to think that what WWE has been doing for the last few years, is the right way of doing things. No, what Jericho did last night is the right way of doing things, and hopefully Jericho's example will be followed by all.

I wasn't a fan of this return at all and let me tell you why. I was watching wrestling last night and there were 4 of us, myself who I would say is pretty hardcore and 3 casual, fair weather fans. At the end of it the 3 casual fans just wanted him off the television in about 2 minutes because nothing happened when he came out, he ran around like he was 5 and left without anything happening. They were excited when he first came out but after about a minute it wasn't heel heat he was getting from these casual fans it was you're wasting my time please get off my television heat, his return turned them OFF of watching the rest of RAW (and they did leave) and if that's happening then the return wasn't good.

You got to understand a lot of people aren't going to understand little things like what Jericho is trying to accomplish, all they see is an idiot running around on television, frankly that's what I initially saw too, as it went on I started to understand a little more but at the end of the day I started watching RAW with 3 other people, after Jericho's return it was just myself.

Sure some of the IWC could see what was going on but your average fan (from what I can see) doesn't see that and that was the biggest problem with his return. They made a big deal about Jericho's return and outside of the smart wrestling fan (the fan who will watch RAW every week anyways) was left scratching their head saying "what the fuck was that?". It didn't get people wanting to see more Jericho, if anything it turned people off from seeing Jericho.

I'm sure that in the next few weeks it will make a lot more sense but that return didn't get your average fan clamoring to see Jericho the next week and if that didn't happen then the return was a flop. At least when Taker came back to be immediately followed by HHH and all that happened was a staredown you automatically knew these 2 were gonna feud so a payoff happened to hardcore fan's and casual's alike, that didn't happen with Jericho's return and your average fan left that segment thinking, "what a loser, get this guy off my TV".

Lol I knew marks would be defending this joke. You can speculate all you want about what will happen, but as of now, it failed. People are giving WWE way too much credit. Like they never screwed up on an angle before. "it has people talking"....of course it does! It was only one if the best promo videos WWE ever did. It was going to be talked about, regardless. Everyone talkeed about hornswagle being vince's son. I guess that worked too?

I'll reserve judgement because I'm sure they have something up their sleeve, but initial, this failed. They could have done so much more. You can't sit there and tell me what they did was the best thing they could have done with this angle.

You know whats funny for everyone complaining? Had they done all these cryptic videos (heelish and dark) and he came back doing what he did plus cut a face promo you all would shit all over that as we all expected him to come as a heel WHICH HE DID BUT DID DIFFERENTLY!

Everyone wants to see what hes going to do (or not do) next week. As someone said he always wants to reinvent himself and also wants to be such a heel people want to kill him and almost every casual fan wants to do that, hell most of the IWC wants to do that too SO HE DID WHAT HE INTENDED TO DO and thats be the most hated heel oh and HE DIDNT EVEN HAVE TO SPEAK so just wait until he does.

Not to mention once he got out the whole segment was only 9 minutes long which was IMO a perfect amount of time.

I thought it was great, i was laughing hard midway through when i realized what jericho was doing. Unless you were too dumb to get it as it was happening, how was that not great and original? Did you want him to run in on a match or give some huge promo about how jericho is back to save us? That would have been boring and tired. Having the fans make asses of themselves then leaving the ring without giving them what they want, brilliant
Do people understand what a heel is?

JBL said it the best: "The audacity of that return is gold!" That was it, he had the audacity to do that.

it was weird. Even tho it was pretty clear that the cryptic messages would lead to Y2J`s return, I don`t think anybody saw that kind of return coming. I think (the alternative would be too horrible), the reaction to this was pretty much that one expected. Jericho knows too much about this business to think that this return will get him loved. So I think Jericho got what he wanted, a crowd tearing the roof down at his return and that same crowd starting to boo him by the end,and that without uttering a word or beating anybody...I think there is obviously a big picture here and this will look better when all played out...I am patient about it and pretty excited to see where they go. I think Jericho will be the most hated guy in the wwe again very soon and it can only be great. People hating this is pretty much the targeted reaction...make no mistake about it, nobody is supposed to love what happened last night....hating Jericho`s return is exactly what they want. I think if done right in next couple of weeks, this could be great tv.

The return of Jericho really pissed me off.....which shows that Jericho got the job done.

Jericho has a great understanding of the business and to go along with it, he knows what exactly his job is. Jericho is obviously going to be a heel once again and to do that he has to piss people off, which is exactly what he did on Monday.

The whole world was waiting for Jericho to come back and start explaining what his video meant. He got a huge pop when he entered and the nature of the video is such that he would have probably gotten a bigger pop had he started explaining. After all the video is about another guy stealing your work and that combined with the excitement of seeing Jericho after a long time may have resulted in Jericho getting a face like reaction, which is exactly what he DOESN'T want.

So what happens now? The fans are pissed at Jericho not talking this week and give him a less positive reaction the coming week. Jericho blames them all for being hypocrites and idiots and then proceeds to explain the video. And all is well is the WWE Universe once again. At least, that is how I think it is playing out in Jericho's head.

...so, the worst kept non secret in WWE is out there for everyone to see, and what happened....sure, he got a pop and then the boo's for running off...but seriously, how camp was that return?

The weirdness and intrigue of the promo's was cool, the way 'it began' pardon the pun, when Y2J turned up was cool, running around the ring in a camp fashion, not cool...

Those that say 'well thats what he wanted - he wanted it to almost be a let down to annoy people'...'this could be really good'...erm...no it probably wont be...it would have been cool if he'd taken out Cena, it would have been cool if he'd taken out Rhodes or DB, to show intent...I wouldnt want him anywhere near CM Punk until WM...that will be cool and there is plenty for him to do before we get there...like disecting each champion on the way...

So did it annoy me, not as such...I think it was a wasted opportunity...now the intrigue of the promo is gone already, it will be forgotten because actually the end result was Y2J skipping around the ring yelling....

Just a bit frustrated this one passed off with such a flat feel....nevermind, definitely needs a slammy for most camp comeback of all time :banghead:

after reading almost all of the messages on this forum, I am left with a need to mention two things.

One, and this isn't really a big thing, everyone seems to be praising this promo due to the fact that it has us all talking and that we'll be tuning in next week cuz of it. Can we be real for a moment? Would we NOT be talking about it if we were all pleased, if we were all pissed, if something absolutely ground-breaking happened, or even if it was exactly what we expected it to be? The answer is no. No matter what happened yesterday, even if it wasnt Jericho as the returning star, we would be talking about it today and watching the follow up next week. Period. So can we just get past that?

and Two. Please, and I know this was just one person who said it, but please never think that the IWC is owed anything, EVER! the IWC are made up of people who always spoil the surprises, and insist that EVERYTHING is done wrong. No matter how cryptic or closely guarded a secret is, the IWC outs it almost immediately. And no matter what any wrestling promotion does on any given night, no matter how truly brilliant it may factually be, there will ALWAYS be a (sizable) minority that think it was done all wrong.
Now pretend for a moment that your a writer for the wwe, tna, roh, or whatever; would you think you owe the IWC anything? Wouldnt you rather troll the hell out of them as often and thoroughly as possible? And would you let anyone tell you you're wrong?

As for what I thought of the payoff, well, I fell right into the trap. As a self-labeled "semi-smark" all I could do is clap my hands and say "well done." I felt really duped at the end of the promo, but by the time the commercials ended, i realized they accomplished their ultimate goal: to make me, and people like me, feel like crap. And as someone who admittedly is part of that aforementioned minority who always tried to find something wrong, I have to tip my cap and say this was done perfectly. Again, they did exactly what they set out to do, and you can't fault them for that.

It is obvious that he is going to be a heel, I didn't know why he was trying to get the crowd to cheer all the time ....

I think that's the whole point, though. By igniting the cheers, yet not speaking, it's as if he's saying to the fans: "Go ahead and cheer me, you idiots. Then, I'll treat you all in the manner you deserve."

After all, no one says a heel doesn't want to be cheered. Think of Wade Barrett before his match last night, watching the monitor that showed his inflicting injury to Randy Orton......and laughing at the sight. If the fans were cheering this, he would have reveled in it.

Now, it's Jericho. We wanted him back, we got him back......and now he'll treat us like the fools he thinks we are (kayfabe).

It's classic Jericho.

You know, for as many dolph ziggler fans as there are on this website you sure don't appreciate what was done last night. If jericho had come back last night and immediatly inserted himself into an angle with cm punk, it would have rendered the current feud with ziggler completly useless. Instead, he plays the crowd for a few weeks, establishes himself as a heel, and slowly but surely gives his explanation on the videos. Don't say the videos were pointless, they have strong meaning behind them, you just have to be patient and let things play out.

Its just another reason we're all hypocrites. You complain that things happen too quickly, that things are rushed. Now they want to take something and build it slowly, and you hate that too.

You should be happy that dolph gets his main event, without jericho being involved yet.

The return sucked. Of course we all knew he was going to go heel, but the way this was done (may be "brilliant" for marks, but will definitely cause the casual fan to turn away, and I'm pretty sure ratings next week will prove that.

When he first came out and started being overly excited I thought it was awesome, and was setting up a great heel turn. Unfortunately this went on for about 10 minutes, and I just kept waiting for him to tell the fans that although they were cheering, but had turned their back on him for the past year etc etc to get heat. It would've been a great heel turn if he got on the mic and totally changed his attitude, got rid of the smile, and pretty much told the fans to go f themselves.

Instead he ran around and kept drawing cheers from the crowd. I don't think he really even did anything for the casual fan to make them believe he wasn't a heel. For any kid (especially for kids, why would a guy coming out to cheers and spending 10 minutes high fiving fans smiling and hyping up the crowd not make them want to LIKE Jericho and think he's a face?

The biggest problem or in the mark words "brilliant" thing about his promo is not saying anything. No, this did not make me want to tune in next week, it gave me a reason not to tune in. This was the best video promo/buildup possibly ever, and it was all thrown away in 10 minutes of silence. I love Jericho, but this SUCKED!

So you wanted him to do something predictable/what you thought he was going to do is what your saying? Dont get me wrong a heel promo from Jericho is always gold but that would have been too predictable (and trust me the IWC would bitch on how predictable a heel promo would have been) and what he did last night was SO fresh hell it was never seen before (UT and HHH didn't play with fans emotions like Jericho did). The idea is he had them in the palm of his hand and SNAP he just smiles, pisses on them and walks to the back. Its fresh, new and most of all IT WORKED. He had the audacity that he had to do that is just unreal WHICH IS THE POINT.

I respect the fact that the casual fan is pissed off and really feels it was a "waste of time", however they want to know why Jericho didnt say anything which is why they will tune in next week. I will admit they cant do this all the time because if it continues to happen THAN it will be a problem but doing that once (MAYBE twice) it allows it to work.

Bottom line NO ONE saw this coming NO ONE. We all saw his return yes, but how it was handled NO ONE knew in return that is a success!

REWATCH it! Its even better knowing what he is going after (playing the crowd).

If what Chris Jericho does or doesn't do is what convinces you either watch or refuse to watch RAW, then you aren't a real wrestling fan anyway, and I am sure that the WWE will somehow find a way to absorb the loss of such a diehard fan such as yourself. Get over your own inflated ego. Nobody gives a flying fuck if you tune into RAW next week or not.

RAW's ratings will be down next week? What a shocking prediction to make! Of course the ratings will be down next week. In fact, they will be absolutely dreadful. But it won't be because of Chris Jericho. Idiots like you will still want to blame it on Jericho and how they mishandled his return, but you would be wrong.

You see, there is also this little thing going on at the same time, maybe you have heard of it. It's called the NCAA FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME! Ya think that might have something to do with a RAW ratings slide for next week Monday? Maybe just a little? Because perhaps wrestling and football share a large portion of their core audience? In fact, RAW's ratings will be down this week too, guaranteed. Hell of a Bowl game between Oklahoma State and Stanford was going on at the same time. RAW's ratings are always impacted by huge sporting events that occur concurrently.

Gawd. You posers think you are so fucking smart predicting that one little part of a wrestling show is going to lower it's ratings, and have an "I told you so" moment, without taking into account anything else that might be going on. Laughable.

To all the people saying I don't know what I'm talking about my answer is simple...

Nothing was hyped. Besides him coming out there was no shocking moment. He just looked like an idiot. As I mentioned previously if you are a casual fan or just started watching wrestling you would view him as an idiot trying to be a face, not a heel, and wouldn't understand why the crowd even cared about him.

I'm a huge rock fan (shocker from my name I'm sure). If he came out when he returned (even if heel) and didn't say a word, I would've said "What's the point," and would've lost a ton of interest in him being there. But when he said he was going to go for Cena, it immediately gave people a reason to watch, wondering when these 2 would be face to face.

The WWE makes money from appealing to a mass audience, not the 1% of viewers who thought this promo was brilliant. People are telling me to rewatch it to really "understand" it. Let me ask you, how many casual fans are going to watch something again they thought was awful in the first place.

Honestly one of the worst returns I've ever seen. Hopefully he'll at least wear pants again when he wrestles.

The point is that casual fans weren't intrigued by last nights "return" beyond the first two minutes. They were bored. And bored fans change the channel. Again it was a decent enough concept on paper. It might even work well for a live audience. But it doesn't work for the tv audience.

Someone posted something from Jericho's book about Drew teasing by going in and out of the ring and the crowd hating him for doing nothing. That worked because it was a wrestler in his home country with rabid fans (one which WWE isn't in almost every week) and it was a house show. It works there. It doesn't work on tv. It didn't even work that well with the live crowd last night. Most of us figured out at some point during that promo that he was just trolling the crowd (for me it started my suspicion when he was raising the mic to speak and then just started screaming "YEAAHAHAHHH" and ran back out of the ring to pander to the audience). That doesn't mean it translated well to the average fan. If it translated to anything it was not speculation, love or hate. It was boredom.

Although I agree no one cares if one fan doesn't watch RAW next week what he is saying isn't that far off. Like I said in a previous post I was watching RAW with 3 other people and after Jericho's return all of them decided to do something else besides watch RAW. WWE isn't about wrestling and they certainly aren't catering to the "real" wrestling fan because the "real" wrestling fan will always be around. Its the casual fans who only watch wrestling when they are entertained by it (key word there) is where the real money lies. From what I've seen the casual fan (the fan who's not a "real" wrestling fan) was turned off by the segment. If he was turning into a heel great but outside of your diehard wrestling fan who actually took the time to analyze what Jericho was doing most other people were turned off by it and not in a "I can't wait to see Jericho get his ass kicked" way. It was more of a "I hope I never see him again" way and they certainly aren't gonna tune in next week in hopes they find out what the hell Jericho was doing or trying to accomplish.

it was awkward to start with as you could tell that smile on his face was put on and fake but once he got the croud going it was ace defo a heel turn in the making, original

i wanted him to speak but its different this way shows how talented he realy is got one of the best wrestling minds ever, well find out in the comeing weeks about the SHE and all the rest people are complainin cos they got out smarted and they want to no everythin now NO PATIANCE is the problem now adays its still 3 months till mania

I said this in a previous thread, but I just feel totally confused by the whole of the 1/2/2012 RAW. But, sticking to Jericho, he didn't help things make any sense at all. He came out and slapped fives with just about every fan at ringside, picked up the mic, dropped the mic and ran enthusiastically back stage. If they are going to have him be a heel, which is what i'm sure of now, he should have established that then and there. When he picked up the mic he should have said something along the likes of, "Is that what you ingrates wanted?" and THEN he should have walked out. It just doesn't make sense for him to do what he did, no matter what is planned out for him.

Ill say this again since some people like to just bitch and complain instead of reading...

Last night was NOT the end...it was the BEGINNING OF THE END. Remember...the promos said IT BEGINS 1/2/12!

I promise you all this isn't over by a longshot.

No, but they will still tune in because of John Cena, CM Punk, Kane, Dolph Ziggler, Zach Ryder, and all of the other things going on. That is my point. One wrestler confusing people is not going to be a dealbreaker for anyone other than angry little IWC Smarks who think the WWE should cater to them exclusively and are pissed off because they didn't get that Jericho was mocking them. An important football game happening on the other channel might get them to change the channel, but Chris Jericho not giving a promo like they thought he should have isn't. One segment over the course of 2 hours is not a deal breaker. The NCAA National Championship game being played at the same time? That's a huge potential deal breaker...Chris Jericho? Not so much.
