Coming Attractions Thread 2014

There isn't a trailer for it yet, but one film I'm looking forward to is The Fault in our Stars, coming in June this year. It's based off of the John Green best selling novel which is about two teenagers with cancer. I loved the novel and given how involved the author has been with the making of the film and how he personally likes the adaptation they have done (he's had discrepancies with his other books being adapted which is why this is the first of his books being adapted finally being released), so it gives me good home that this will be one that's done well.

Obviously being a fan of the book is what drives me to seeing it, so I can imagine the audience is going to consist of lovers of the books and may not be as big of an audience drive for regular viewers, but bigger surprises have happened in the film world.

Book adaptations are dicey. It's rare you'll see something that's as good as (Carrie '76) or better than the source material. The Great Gatsby (2013) had so much potential, but the end result was a glitzy (and boring) failure. Took a quick look at IMDB, and I see Shailene Woodley is co-starring in The Fault in our Stars, so she's taking another step towards being the It girl in Hollywood this year.

Wolf Creek 2

Lured by the promise of an Australian holiday, backpackers Rutger, Katarina, and Paul visit the notorious Wolf Creek Crater. Their dream Outback adventure soon becomes a horrific reality when they encounter the site’s most infamous local, the last man any traveler to the region ever wants to meet; Mick Taylor (John Jarratt). As the backpackers flee, Mick pursues them on an epic white knuckled rampage across hostile wasteland. Only one will remain to be dragged back to his lair to witness the true magnitude of his monstrosity. And if the last man standing is to have any hope of surviving where no one else has survived before, he’ll have to use every ounce of cunning to outwit the man behind the monster and become every bit as ruthless as the monster inside the man.

No US release dates for Wolf Creek 2.

The original Wolf Creek had an intriguing premise, but the entire movie just bored the shit out of me. If I'm going by the trailer, Wolf Creek 2 should feature more action, and they're not hiding Mick's alter ego as murdering sociopath here. Hopefully, Mick will get a taste of his own medicine, but I'm sure they'll find a way to keep him alive to open up more possibilities for a third film.

Kite

Kite is an upcoming American action film written and directed by Ralph Ziman, based on the 1998 anime of the same name by Yasuomi Umetsu. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, India Eisley and Callan McAuliffe.

No official release dates for Kite.

I remember India Eisley from Underworld: Awakening (she portrayed Selene and Michael's daughter, Eve), but that's it. Kind of worried about the direction for Sam Jackson here. Jackson is more entertaining, when he's constantly pissed off. Subdued Samuel Jackson? Yeah, he's unbearably dull. Just watch The Samaritan, if you don't believe me.

Nurse 3D

Release Date: February 7, 2014 (Limited)

Nurse 3D is a thriller/horror film directed by Doug Aarniokoski and written by David Loughery starring Paz de la Huerta, Katrina Bowden, Corbin Bleu. By day Abby Russell is a dedicated nurse, someone you wouldn't hesitate to trust your life with. But by night, her real work begins...using her smoldering sexuality she lures cheating men to their brutal deaths and exposes them for who they really are. When a younger nurse starts to suspect Abby's actions and compromises her master plan, Abby must find a way to outsmart her long enough to bring the cheater you'd least expect to justice.

Katrina Bowden is okay, when she sticks to her routine (the ditzy and clueless blonde), but Bowden's range is VERY limited outside of her usual shtick.

Nurse 3D is something I'll watch at home for a few cheap laughs (hopefully), because I'm not paying the price of a 3D ticket for this.

Bad Words

Release Date: March 14, 2014 (Limited)

Jason Bateman makes his directorial debut with the subversive comedy, BAD WORDS. Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year old who finds a loophole in the rules of the National Quill Spelling Bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition. Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame. As a reporter attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand of 'Homeland'), who is completely unfazed by Guy's take-no-prisoners approach to life. The movie also stars Alison Janney, Kathryn Hahn and Phillip Baker Hall.

To hell with his directorial debut. I'm looking forward to the change in character for Jason Bateman, as a foul-mouthed jerk. Usually, Bateman portrays an uptight and wimpy nerd, who plays by the rules, but he's a dick in Bad Words. Can't wait for this one, and I'll try to catch it on opening day, if I can.

Fading Gigolo

Release Date: April 18, 2014 (Limited)

Woody Allen and John Turturro star in this comedy as two down-on-their-luck guys who decide to pimp themselves out in order to get by. Turturro writes and directs.

Woody Allen and John Turturro as gigolos? I have to see this. Although, I could do without Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara. I don't get the appeal of Vergara. Catwoman and Basic Instinct 2 are the most recent Sharon Stone films for me. Two unbearable train wrecks, and I can't remember the last good Sharon Stone film, or one that's worth watching.

Penance

A group of kidnappers who abduct the young daughter of a mysterious family find themselves battling supernatural forces and each other when the girl turns out to be the central cog in an evil plan.

No official release dates.

This trailer for Penance is genuinely creepy and disturbing, and I'll have to keep an eye on this one for any future release dates.

May I Kill U?

Release Date: February 4, 2014 (VOD release)

Baz (Barry Vartis) is one of Britain’s new breed of police, a cycle cop. Although he appears to be a figure of fun, a freak accident turns him into a psychopath…

As riots break out in London, a head injury changes Baz from an everyday police officer into a mad vigilante, offering no-hope criminals a stark choice, arrest or death. Baz sees this campaign as ‘lawful killing’. Criminals too stunned, confused, or drunk to argue are politely asked, “May I kill you?” and merrily dispatched on their final journey. All these exchanges are recorded on Baz’ helmet-cam and posted anonymously on social networks.

Using the alter ego ‘@N4cethelaw’ Baz acquires an increasing number of fans with each killing, dispensing justice to scumbags, cleaning up society like some bizarre and deadly ‘Robin Hood’, ridding society of its’ ills.

But, in a sudden reversal, Baz is captured by an enraged relative of one of his presumed “kills” and faces slaughter or even worse… exposure.

Unique premise for May I Kill U, but the trailer is mediocre at best. Setting the bar low for this, because May I Kill U could be a nice surprise, or it'll be another tacky, low-budget horror comedy failure (the trailer doesn't help).

Repentance

Release Date: February 28, 2014 (limited)

Years after a drunken car crash that almost took his life, Tommy Carter has reinvented himself as a therapist/spiritual advisor who advocates a synthesis of world religions and positivity. He's parlayed this vocation into a successful book release that one day draws the attention of Angel Sanchez, a profoundly troubled man fixated on the "untimely" death of his mother. When Carter takes on Sanchez as a personal client in an effort to raise funds for his indebted brother Ben, things quickly take a turn for the worse. Angel needs much more than a simple life coach.

I don't get the horror tag for this. Looks like a psychological thriller.

Anyway, evil (The Last King Of Scotland) or bad guy Forest Whitaker is more entertaining than normal nice guy Forest Whitaker, so Repentance should be worth watching.

The Babadook

Amelia (Essie Davis) is a widow who lost her husband in a heart-breaking stroke of shit luck: he was killed in a car accident while driving to the delivery of their first son. Now six years old, young Sam (Noah Wiseman) has begun to develop behavioral problems and incestuous tendencies, and their neighbors have become increasingly distant as a result. When Amelia discovers a ominously-covered, never-before-seen pop-up book called The Babadook on Sam's shelf, she decides to immediately debut it as a bedtime story.

No official release dates.

Not too sure about The Babadook. I like the premise, but The Babadook looks like the type of horror film that relies on a barrage of cheap jump scares every five minutes.

Better Living Through Chemistry

Release Date March 14, 2014 (limited)

A straight-laced pharmacist's uneventful life spirals out of control when he starts an affair with a trophy wife customer who takes him on a joyride involving sex, drugs and possibly murder.

I'm a big fan of Sam Rockwell, and Wilde should be a nice fit for her character. Looking forward to this.

The Bag Man

Release Date: February 28, 2014 (limited)

THE BAG MAN is a taut crime thriller that follows the story of JACK (John Cusack), a tough guy with chronic bad luck but human touches. Hired by DRAGNA (Robert De Niro), a legendary crime boss to complete a simple but unusual task, the plot centers around the anticipated arrival of Dragna who has summoned JACK and a host of shady characters to a remote location for unknown reasons. Over the course of a long and violently eventful night awaiting Dragna's arrival, Jack's path crosses that of RIVKA (Rebecca Da Costa), a stunningly beautiful woman whose life becomes physically and emotionally entangled with Jack's. When Dragna finally arrives on the scene there are sudden and extreme consequences for all.

Cusack's going for another quasi (War, Inc.) Grosse Point Blank sequel? Holding out some hope for De Niro to save this potential train wreck.

The Fault in Our Stars

Release Date: June 2014

Hazel and Gus are two teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them on a journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel's other constant companion is an oxygen tank, Gus jokes about his prosthetic leg, and they met and fell in love at a cancer support group.

A month ago, I was uncertain as to how this film would be as there was controversy regarding the tag line of the poster, but seeing the trailer finally out has me looking forward to the film. Now my investment in this film is more around the love of the book when it first came out, so it may not be as appealing to everyone. I'm definitely have to re-read the book before release, but it will be a nice moving film to watch.

Trailer looks good. Not sure if I'll watch this in theaters yet, but I'll give The Fault In Our Stars a try, when the time comes. And if I'm going by the critical praise for The Spectacular Now, Shailene Woodley should carve out a nice niche (she has the perfect look) for herself in coming age of films, while she's still young. I had the trailer for White Bird In A Blizzard in here, but it's gone now.

A Million Ways To Die In The West

Release Date: May 30, 2014

Seth MacFarlane directs, produces, co-writes and plays the role of the cowardly sheep farmer Albert in A Million Ways to Die in the West. After Albert backs out of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend leaves him for another man. When a mysterious and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband, a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test. Starring alongside MacFarlane are Oscar (R) winner Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman and Neil Patrick Harris. MacFarlane reunites many of the filmmakers behind Universal and MRC's hit film Ted including Scott Stuber (Bluegrass Films) and Jason Clark who produce, and Wellesley Wild and Alec Sulkin who co-wrote the script.

So I'm guessing this will be another setback for for Charlize Theron? Sorry, but the western setting feels unnecessary and out of place, and I tried, but I couldn't laugh at anything in this trailer. I like the cast here, but it wouldn't surprise me if this one flopped on opening weekend.

Oculus

Release Date: April 11, 2014

Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents' deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim's innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again...

The WWE Studios logo scares me. Eerie trailer (the blood on the mirrors is a nice touch), but it's hard to trust anything with WWE's name attached to it.

Patrick

Patrick lays comatose in a small private hospital, his only action being his involuntary spitting. When a pretty young nurse, just separated from her husband, begins work at the hospital, she senses that Patrick is communicating with her, and he seems to be using his psychic powers to manipulate events in her life.

No official release dates for Patrick.

Patrick is supposed to be a remake of the 1978 film, and I'm on the Sharni Vinson bandwagon. She delivered the best performance in You're Next, and the movie itself was a piece of shit, but Vinson was pretty good in Bait 3D. Creepy trailer, and hopefully they deliver a good amount of bloody gore for this one.

Children Of Sorrow

Release Date(s): March 4, 2014 (limited theatrical & VOD releases)

Simon Leach is a very, very sick man. Thriving on despair, pain, and panic, he unites a group of broken and desperate people in the middle of the desert. He showers them with the love and affection they're so desperate for, but Simon has a much greater plan for his followers.

Children Of Sorrow could be a decent enough horror flick, if you're trying to kill some time. Or Children Of Sorrow could be another found-footage bore.

Silent But Deadly

Release Date: February 7, 2014 (limited)

Somebody is killing old farts. The weapon of choice: a secret. They are being offed by a masked killer who stalks the halls of the small retirement community in which they live. Full of laughs and full of scares - you'll be on the edge of your seat from the moment you enter the world of the Lake View Retirement Home: The place where people come to live... until they die!

No middle ground on this. It's going to be on okay guilty pleasure, or one of the worst movies in 2014.

Enemy

Release Date: March 14, 2014 (limited)

Academy Award Nominee Jake Gyllenhaal reteams with his PRISONERS director, Academy Award Nominee Denis Villeneuve, in this sexy and hypnotically surreal psychological thriller that breathes new life into the doppleganger tradition. Adam Bell (Gyllenhaal) is a glum, disheveled history professor, who seems disinterested even in his beautiful girlfriend, Mary (Laurent). Watching a movie on the recommendation of a colleague, Adam spots his double, a bit-part actor named Anthony Clair, and decides to track him down. The identical men meet and their lives become bizarrely and irrevocably intertwined. Gyllenhaal is transfixing as both Adam and Anthony, provoking empathy as well as disapproval while embodying two distinct personas. With masterfully controlled attention to detail, Villeneuve takes us on an enigmatic and gripping journey through a world that is both familiar and strange - and hard to shake off long after its final, unnerving image. ENEMY, adapted from Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago's 2004 novel The Double, is about the power of the subconscious. In the end, only one man can survive.

Enemy could be a creepy atmospheric thriller, and Jake Gyllenhaal is a reliable actor for consistent quality performances. Not 100% sure about watching this in a theater, and I need to see Prisoners.

Joe

Release Date: April 11, 2014 (limited)

An ex-con (Nicolas Cage) mentors a teenager from a troubled home and guides him away from his wicked father in this David Gordon Green-directed drama.

Nicola Cage is the only reason why I clicked on the recommended trailers. Joe looks like a generic straight-to-video drama, and this trailer shows too much.

The Rover

Robert Pattinson stars as a lone wolf drifter in this post-apocalyptic western from Animal Kingdom's David Michod. Guy Pearce co-stars.

No official release dates for The Rover.

I'm beyond burnt on coming of age comedies and post-apocalyptic films, and this teaser is underwhelming. Hoping for a stronger punch in the full trailer.

Maladies

Release Date: March 21, 2014 (limited)

This daring new film charts the struggles of an unstable former soap opera star in 1960's New York as he tries to restart his floundering creative career. Hoping to find clarity and new purpose as a writer, he holes up with his eccentric sister at the seaside home of their best friend. But as he disappears further into his own mind, reality begins to slip through his grasp. The story is a heartfelt but defiantly unconventional exploration of the creative mind.

James Franco is really streaky now a days. I had high hopes after Spider-Man 2 and 127 Hours, but Franco's inconsistency (Your Highness) is still a big problem. I'm still a fan, but this trailer gives me the feeling of a forgettable drama that's not worth the trip to a theater.

The Double

Release Date: May 9, 2014

Eisenberg plays Simon, a timid, isolated man who's overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams (Wasikowska). The arrival of a new co-worker, James (also played by Eisenberg), serves to upset the balance. James is both Simon's exact physical double and his opposite - confident, charismatic and good with women. To Simon's horror, James slowly starts taking over his life.

Eisenberg is another strange case for me. No bragworthy films after The Social Network, and everything will feel like a prelude to Lex Luthor in a few years. Trippy trailer, but I've cooled off on all things Eisenberg for the time being.

Under The Skin

Release Date: April 4, 2014

An alien seductress preys upon hitchhikers in Scotland.

Love this trailer. It's eerie and creepy, but I'm not 100% sold on Scarlet Johansson as a leading lady. More often than not, Johansson is just eye candy, or she's able to fill a role as a decent supporting actress.

The Two Faces Of January

1962. A glamorous American couple, the charismatic Chester MacFarland (Mortensen) and his alluring younger wife Colette (Dunst), arrive in Athens by boat via the Corinthian Canal. While sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter Rydal (Isaac), a young, Greek-speaking American who is working as a tour guide, scamming tourists on the side. Drawn to Colette's beauty and impressed by Chester's wealth and sophistication, Rydal gladly accepts their invitation to dinner. However, all is not as it seems with the MacFarlands and Chester's affable exterior hides darker secrets. When Rydal visits the couple at their exclusive hotel, Chester presses him to help move the body of a seemingly unconscious man who he claims attacked him. In the moment, Rydal agrees but as events take a more sinister turn he finds himself compromised and unable to pull himself free. His increasing infatuation with the vulnerable and responsive Colette gives rise to Chester's jealousy and paranoia, leading to a tense and dangerous battle of wits between the two men.

No official release dates.

Boring and dull trailer, but I'll give this one a try at home, when the time comes.

Adult World

Release Date: February 14, 2014 (limited)

Adult World is a satirical comedy about an eccentric young woman, Amy Anderson, (Emma Roberts) who has just come out of university, convinced she's going to be a famous poet. Saddled with debt and unemployed she moves back in with her parents who force her to get a job. Desperate and armed with a poetry degree and not much else she takes the only job she can find, working in an adult book store called Adult World. Meanwhile, desperate to get her poems published, Amy stalks an aging punk poet figure named Rat Billings (John Cusack), "one of the greatest poets of the early 90s." Rat reluctantly agrees to mentor her. As Amy makes new friends, including a drag queen named Rubia, the elderly couple who own Adult World, and Alex, the charming and quirky young manager, she learns that she might not be the voice of her generation after all.

Amy is tailor-made for Emma Roberts. She's young and she's got a long way to go, but Roberts is entertaining, when she's in her comfort zone for the delusional and narcissistic brat (i.e. American Horror Story: Coven).

The Purge: Anarchy

Release Date: June 20, 2014

The chaos continues in this Universal Pictures sequel produced by Jason Blum.

The synopsis (or lack there of ) is too vague to draw any real conclusions, and this is just a teaser. At first, I didn't have a real problem with this teaser, but I watched it over again, and I'm uneasy about it now.

First, they start off the trailer with one of the most redundant horror cliches ("The car won't start!") ever. And I like the idea of throwing the protagonists in the chaos outside this time around, but we already know what The Purge is about, so they can't rely on the intrigue for the unknown again. I'm not sold on a big opening weekend at the box office, but it wouldn't shock me if a part three happened.

I wouldn’t mind a part three, where the government considers ending The Purge, but Purge enthusiasts refuse to quit. Could be a lot of fun, but nothing beyond three movies. With more sequels, you’re running the risk of creating a Saw V or Halloween: Resurrection, and that’s not a compliment.

Wolves

The coming-of-age story of Cayden Richards. Forced to hit the road after the murder of his parents, Cayden wanders, lost, without purpose... Until he meets a certifiable lunatic named Wild Joe, who sets him on a path to the ominous town of Lupine Ridge, to hunt down the truths of his history. But in the end, who's really hunting whom?

No official release dates.

I always confuse Stephen McHattie with Lance Henriksen, because it's almost impossible to ignore the resemblance.

I dunno about this one. The strong teenie bopper vibe in the trailer worries me, but the sporadic shots of gore and hardcore violence give me some hope. Although, I'm sure Wolves will be another cliched and predictable teen romance film.

Alien Abduction

Release Date: April 4, 2014 (limited)

A terrifying sci-fi story inspired by dramatic found footage, ‘Alien Abduction’ (aka ‘Project Blue Book’) preys on our fear of the unknown as we follow an average American family who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

While driving to a campsite in the Brown Mountains of North Carolina, the Morris family’s GPS malfunctions and they are lead to a remote tunnel surrounded by abandoned vehicles. The father, Peter Morris is abducted leaving his traumatized wife and children to flee and seek refuge in a nearby cabin. There, they are horrified to learn that strange lights in the nearby mountains have been linked to alien abduction and human sacrifice for centuries.

When their attempts to alert the authorities are intercepted by the deadly extraterrestrial threat, the surviving members of the family find themselves under siege. A brutal and bloody attack unfolds as we witness the horror through the lens of the youngest child’s video camera.

I need more than sixteen seconds for a teaser.

Tammy

Release Date: July 2, 2014

A fast food employee (Melissa McCarthy} loses her job and heads out on the road with her grandmother (Susan Sarandon) in this comedy written by the Bridesmaids' star along with her husband, Ben Falcone, who also directs. Kathy Bates and Mark Duplass costar.

Melissa McCarthy needs an overhaul or she needs to tweak her routine. Feels like I'm looking at another trailer for Identity Thief or The Heat. Adam Sandler can rely on the same shtick for all of his movies, because he's Adam Sandler. McCarthy doesn't have that luxury.

Brick Mansions

Release Date: April 25, 2014

In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. For undercover cop Damien Collier (Paul Walker) every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (David Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when drug kingpin, Tremaine (RZA) kidnaps Lino's girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict, and together they must stop a sinister plot to devastate the entire city. With stylized action featuring thrilling Parkour stunts (David Belle is the co-founder of this physical training discipline), Brick Mansions puts an entertaining twist on the action genre.

Brick Mansions could be a fun action flick, but I need to see the original first (District B13).

Drive Hard

American thief, Simon Keller (Cusack), arrives in a foreign country in need of a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the underworld, he takes a driving lesson from ex F-1 champion, Peter Roberts (Jane), now working as a driving instructor. After Keller robs a bank during the lesson, Roberts has no choice, but to use his driving talent to get away from pursuing police and mobsters.

No official release dates.

Well, I'm a fan of Cusack, so I'll give this one a try. Not too sure about Thomas Jane in a comedy, though.

I saw a couple commercials at the theaters today that really got me excited for some upcoming movies. There was one called The Son of God which I'm sure most of you movie fantastic have heard well about considering it's going to begin playing in the next couple of weeks. I'll say as someone who is agnostic and not very religious in anyway, this movie looks incredible. Despite being forced to go to bible classes and church from a young age I don't think I've ever heard the full story the bible tells, but this movie feels like it generally follows it very well. Not only that but from the commercials the filming and acting looks incredible, and it just looks like something that could be enjoyable. Like I said as someone who is not religious in any way, shape, or form...this movie looks like one I wouldn't want to miss, and that is saying a lot.

There's another one I know about, I haven't seen commercials for it, but it's called Draft Day. I'm a big Kevin Costner fan, and from what I read Costner plays the GM of the Cleveland Browns and is trying to get the first overall pick of the draft. Now not only does it have Costner, but it's about football, it's got real teams, and it's a comedy. This movie is perfect for me, and it's something I'm definitely going to have to go to a theater to see. However there is another Kevin Costner movie called 3 Days to Kill that didn't attract me as much. My friend said she thought it looked good, but I don't know from the previews it seemed too cliche to me. Reminded me of the Taken series. Although apparently this one already came out three days ago so I guess I'm a little late.

The last movie I saw in the previews that looked very good was one called Non-Stop, which comes out the 28th of this month. This movie features Liam Neeson, and is about an Air Marshall who is apparently framed for taking over an airplane. So the Marshall (Neeson) has to stop it and save the day. It looked like one I'll definitely have to catch, probably won't get a chance to see it in theaters, but it looks good.

Son Of God will make splash, but I'm not 100% sold on Draft Day right now. The trailer isn't bad, but it's not something I'll rush out to theaters for. And unless I'm missing something, 3 Days To Kill comes out this Friday. Amber Heard fills her usual role as eye candy, but I have a lot of trouble buying into Kevin Costner as this lethal bad ass.

Non-Stop? I'm 50/50 on it right now. Taken 2 was an underwhelming carbon copy of the first film for me, and Neeson's buzz as an action guy started with Taken, so it's hard to get excited about anything else.

Release Date(s): April 18, 2014 (UK)/April 25, 2014(US/limited)

Driving home on the eve of the biggest challenge of his career, Locke makes a sudden choice to go confront the only situation in his life that can't be neatly handled. Tom Hardy in a brooding character study? I'm in.

Bad Country

Inspired by real events, BAD COUNTRY is a gritty Louisiana set crime drama. Detective Bud Carter's investigations lead to the arrest of Jesse Weiland, a contract killer from a criminal syndicate. Weiland, facing life in prison and losing his family, puts his trust in Carter and becomes an informant. The case attracts the FBI, who in turn, wrestles control from Carter. When a sting goes bad, the syndicate boss, Lutin Adams uses crooked politicians and lawyers to identify Weiland as the 'rat.' His family is executed, setting Weiland on a path of revenge executing targets on a manhunt for Lutin. Carter takes control, pursuing the syndicate to the French Quarter. The climax explodes as Carter, Weiland and Lutin are caught in a triangular crossfire.

No official release dates.

Anyone or anything with ties to those awful Boondock Saints films worries me. Bad Country is worth a try for Willem Dafoe, but the trailer feels too generic and pedestrian.

Guardians Of The Galaxy

Release Date: August 1, 2014

Marvel Studios expands their cosmic presence on the big screen with this adaptation of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic series. Nicole Perlman provides the script.

I hardly know anything about comic books, but I love the trailer. Definitely looking forward to this.

The Sacrament follows two Vice media correspondents as they set out to document their friend’s search to find his missing sister. They travel outside of the United States to an undisclosed location where they are welcomed into the world of “Eden Parish,” a self-sustained rural utopia comprised of nearly 200 members. At the center of this small, religious, socialist community is a mysterious leader known only as “Father.” As their friend reunites with his sister, it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. What started as just another documentary shoot soon becomes a race to escape with their lives.

It's Ti West, and he's a reliable choice for all things horror, but this trailer is underwhelming. For me the problem is, I finally took the time to watch V/H/S 2 a little a while ago, so my expectations for a story about a news team exposing a sadistic cult (Safe Haven in V/H/S 2, and it's a GREAT short, easily the best in both films) are high. Still, I'll give this a chance, when the times comes, because I'm a big fan of Ti West.

Not Safe For Work

Release Date: April 15, 2014 (DVD release)

Captain America's Joe Johnston heads into low-budget territory with this claustrophobic thriller surrounding a young lawyer (Max Minghella) who's life is in jeopardy when he becomes trapped in an office with a killer out to harm his company. Johnston directs from a script by Adam Mason and Simon Boyes.

Apparently, Not Safe For Work will receive a VOD release also, but I couldn't find any dates for that, so I used the straight-to-video release date.

Yeah, kind of hard to defend Joe Johnston after this shit trailer.

In The Blood

Release Date: April 4, 2014 (VOD release)

Haywire's Gina Carano stars in this action thriller in the mold of Taken from director John Stockwell. The plot details a nightmare vacation when a woman (Carano) loses her husband to kidnappers and won't stop until they pay for the crime. Danny Trejo plays the film's villain, Big Biz, with Avatar's Stephen Lang leading the rest of the starring cast.

Carano showed a lot of promise as an action heroine in Haywire, so I'm looking forward to this.

In Fear

Release Date(s): March 7, 2014(limited theatrical)/March 11, 2014 (DVD release)

In Fear is a tense psychological horror about a young couple's fight to make it through the night. Home invasion but in a car. In real-time. Tom (De Caestecker) and Lucy (Englert) are trapped in a maze of country roads with only their vehicle for protection, terrorized by an unseen tormentor hell-bent on exploiting their worst fears. Driving, lost and tormented in the night, primal fears of the dark and the unknown give way to fear that you have let the evil in, or that it is already there.

I posted the teaser for this in the old thread, but In Fear didn't have a release date back then.

Looking forward to this. Intriguing premise, and it's refreshing to see a trailer for a horror film that doesn't rely on cheap jump scares and tons of blood and gore.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction

Release Date: June 27, 2014

The Transformers film series continues with this fourth entry from director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg. Mark Wahlberg and Jack Reynor star.

:zzzz:

Looks like every other Transformers trailer: Explosions, people running with explosions in the background, and big fights in the city.

I have some interest in Mark Wahlberg taking over for Shia LaBeouf in the leading role. Looking back, Sam (Shia) never progressed as a character through three films with all the "No, no, no!" stuff, and Sam screaming "OPTIMUS!!!!" every five minutes. But it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Going by the trailer, it'll be the same old Michael Bay film all over again, with the introduction of Dinobots.

The Den

Release Date: March 14, 2014 (limited)

After receiving a grant for her graduate thesis, Elizabeth Benton (Melanie Papalia) logs onto a video-chat site known as THE DEN, on a mission to explore the habits of its users. During one of her random video-chats, Elizabeth watches in horror as a teenage girl is gruesomely murdered in front of her webcam. While the police dismiss it as a viral prank, Elizabeth believes what she saw is real and takes it upon herself to find the truth. Her life quickly spirals out of control as she gets pulled deeper into the darkest recesses of the internet. And eventually, Elizabeth finds herself trapped in a twisted game in which she and her loved ones are targeted for the same grisly fate as the first victim.

Not sure about this right now.

The Den looks like a short in a horror anthology film (eerily similar to a short in the first V/H/S), and the trailer is underwhelming.

Afflicted

Release Date: April 4, 2014

This terrifying horror thriller follows two best friends who set out on the trip of a lifetime around the world. Their journey, documented every step of the way, soon takes a dark and unexpected turn after an encounter with a beautiful woman in Paris leaves one of them mysteriously afflicted. Winner: Best Picture (Horror), Best Screenplay (Horror), Best Director (Horror) at Fantastic Fest, and recipient of awards of recognition from the Toronto International Film Festival and the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival. AFFLICTED is one of the most suspenseful and original action horror debuts in a generation.

Intriguing premise, but the shaky cam bullshit in this trailer is annoying.

Stage Fright

Release Date: May 9, 2014 (limited)

Starry-eyed teenager Camilla Swanson wants to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a Broadway diva, but she's stuck working in the kitchen of a snobby performing arts camp. Determined to change her destiny, she sneaks in to audition for the summer showcase and lands a lead role in the play, but just as rehearsals begin, blood starts to spill, and Camilla soon finds herself terrified by the horror of musical theatre.

Stage Fright could be a kooky and demented version of The Phantom Of The Opera, so I'm in.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

Release Date: August 22, 2014

Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller reunite to bring Miller's visually stunning "Sin City" graphic novels back to the screen in SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. Weaving together two of Miller's classic stories with new tales, the town's most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR is the follow up to Rodriguez and Miller's 2005 groundbreaking film, FRANK MILLER'S SIN CITY.

After all the delays, and the long waits, I almost settled into a “moving on” mindset for not caring about a sequel over the past two or three years. Love the new additions (Eva Green is horribly underrated) to the cast, and I don't miss Clive Owen at all (sorry, he's been in one too many shit films over the years). And I'm sure they'll throw in a tribute message for Michael Clarke Duncan and Brittany Murphy at some point.

Frank

Frank is a comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon, who discovers he's bitten off more than he can chew when he joins a band of eccentric pop musicians led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank and his terrifying sidekick, Clara. Frank's uniqueness lies in the fact that he makes music purely for the joy of creating and because he wears a giant fake head. After a rocky start, Jon ingratiates himself with the band, and they retreat to a cabin in the woods to record an album. As his influence waxes, creative tensions mount and the band's entire raison d'être is called into question.

No official release dates.

The trailer doesn't do anything for me, but I'll take a chance on this for Michael Fassbender.

Only Lovers Left Alive

Release Date: April 11, 2014 (limited)

Noted indie director Jim Jarmusch directs the vampire story Only Lovers Left Alive. Tom Hiddleston stars as Adam, a bloodsucker who makes a living as a reclusive musician. He reunites with the love of his life, Eve (Tilda Swinton) a fellow vampire who leaves her home overseas to be with him in the downtrodden Motor City. They eventually get a visit from Eve's irresponsible sister (Mia Wasikowska) who irritates Adam and eventually causes trouble with the one human - the vampires refer to the living as zombies -- with whom the depressed music hero gets along. Only Lovers Left Alive screened at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

Deliver Us From Evil

Release Dates: July 2, 2014

Posting the regular and international trailers, because there's a noticeable difference between both trailers, with international trailer focusing on Deliver us From Evil's supernatural side.

In DELIVER US FROM EVIL, New York police officer Ralph Sarchie (Eric Bana), struggling with his own personal issues, begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes. He joins forces with an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez), schooled in the rituals of exorcism, to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their city. Based upon the book, which details Sarchie's bone-chilling real-life cases.

Looks like another generic exorcism horror film "Based on true events." The regular trailer is more effective. It's mysterious, and they end it with the perfect cliffhanger. The international trailer shows too much, and I've seen enough horror films with over the top exorcisms.

Also, Eric Bana is better off as a supporting player. He doesn't have enough juice to carry a film as the leading man. Think about Hulk. Jennifer Connley and Nick Nolte are the stars of that cast, and they upstage Bana during their scenes together.

13 Sins

Release Date: April 18, 2014 (Limited)

A cryptic phone call sets off a dangerous game of risks for Elliot, a down-on-his luck salesman. The game promises increasing rewards for completing 13 tasks, each more sinister than the last.

The original (13 game sayawng/13: Game of Death/13 Beloved) is a little overrated in my eyes, and the trailer for this remake is kind of boring.

The Giver

Release Date: August 15, 2014

The haunting story of THE GIVER centers on Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. The film is based on Lois Lowry's beloved young adult novel of the same name, which was the winner the 1994 Newbury Medal and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

Holding out some hope for Streep and Bridges, but this bland trailer is disappointing.

The Signal

Release Date: June 13, 2014

Three college students on a road trip across the Southwest experience a detour: the tracking of a computer genius who has already hacked into MIT and exposed security faults. The trio find themselves drawn to an eerily isolated area. Suddenly everything goes dark. When one of the students, Nic, regains consciousness, he is in a waking nightmare...

I have my doubts this.

The premise is intriguing, and I don't have any problems with the cast, but the trailer reminds me of a random and generic straight-to-video sci-fi/horror film. I'll take a chance on this, but I'll pass on a theater showing.

International trailer for Godzilla:

June

June is the story about a nine-year-old orphan who has become the vessel of a supernatural being called Aer. June struggles holding Aer back from lashing out when other kids tease and bully her. Aer leaves a trail of damaged and destroyed foster homes in her wake. June quickly bonds with her new adoptive parents Lily and Dave. But she must discover her true identity to overcome this inner demon in order to save herself, her new family, and to find love and acceptance in a chaotic world.

No official release dates yet.

Casper Van Dien? I've only seen two of his films: the original Starship Troopers, and the desperate attempt (or Starship Troopers 3) to spark some interest in the series with a familiar face in the sequel. I had no idea he was still around.

Anyway, this teaser for June feels like a short film, but it's enough to pique my interest, so I'll keep an eye on this for one for any release dates.

Cheap Thrills

Release Date: May 26, 2014 (DVD)

Cheap Thrills follows Craig (Pat Healy, Compliance), a struggling family man who loses his low-wage job and is threatened with eviction. In an effort to delay facing the music at home, he heads to a local bar and encounters an old friend (Ethan Embry, Empire Records). The two friends are roped into a round of drinks by a charismatic and obscenely wealthy stranger (David Koechner, Anchorman 2) along with his mysterious wife (Sara Paxton, The Inkeepers). The couple engages the two friends in a series of innocent dares in exchange for money over the course of the evening, with each challenge upping the ante in both reward and boundaries. It seems like easy and much needed money, but the couple's twisted sense of humor pushes just how far Craig and his friend are willing to go for money and cheap thrills.

I'm kind of late on this one, because Cheap Thrills received a limited theatrical release on Friday, but I'm looking forward to this. Pat Healy has the potential to be a decent leading man, David Koechner is one of my favorite comedians, and I'll watch anything with Sara Paxton. Cheap Thrills is currently holding a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and if I'm using the consensus for a handful of reviews, Cheap Thrills is an early favorite for the best black comedy in 2014.

Jinn

Release Date: April 4, 2014 (limited)

In the beginning, three were created. Man made of clay. Angels made of light. And a third made of fire. For centuries, stories of angels and men have captured the imagination and been etched into history crossing all boundaries of culture, religion and time. These two races have dominated the landscape of modern mythology, shrouding the evidence that a third was ever created. This third race, born of smokeless fire, was named the jinn. Modern man has all but forgotten this third race ever existed. It is time for him to remember.

Decent enough premise, but the trailer is too dull. Also, April 4? If I'm not mistaken, that's the release date for the new Captain America film. Terrible, terrible timing.

The Maze Runner

Release Date: September 19, 2014

When Thomas wakes up trapped in a massive maze with a group of other boys, he has no memory of the outside world other than strange dreams about a mysterious organization known as W.C.K.D. Only by piecing together fragments of his past with clues he discovers in the maze can Thomas hope to uncover his true purpose and a way to escape. Based upon the best-selling novel by James Dashner.

Into The Storm

Release Date: August 8, 2014

In the span of a single day, the town of Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the erratic and deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

Into The Storm could be a fun watch for theaters, but I don't have high hopes for this. I see a forgettable one and done theater experience, because I have hard time believing you'll feel same the wow factor without the big screen.

Let's Be Cops

Release Date: August 13, 2014

It's the ultimate buddy cop movie except for one thing: they're not cops. When two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party, they become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted "heroes" get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.

I don't see anything special here. I just see another random R-rated comedy with raunchy humor, and maybe they'll throw in some nudity. They're trying to put a twist on the buddy cop formula with the fake cops stuff, but this trailer bores me.

Filth

Release Date: May 30, 2014 (limited)

Scheming Bruce Robertson, a bigoted and corrupt policeman, is in line for a promotion and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Enlisted to solve a brutal murder and threatened by the aspirations of his colleagues, including Ray Lennox, Bruce sets about ensuring their ruin, right under the nose of unwitting Chief Inspector Toal. As he turns his colleagues against one another by stealing their wives and exposing their secrets, Bruce starts to lose himself in a web of deceit that he can no longer control. His past is slowly catching up with him, and a missing wife, a crippling drug habit and suspicious colleagues start to take their toll on his sanity. The question is: can he keep his grip on reality long enough to disentangle himself from the filth?

If I remember correctly, Filth was released in theaters last year in the UK and Scotland, and I've been dying to see this for a while now, because there's a lot of promise with McAvoy in the leading role.

The Drop

Release Date: September 19, 2014 (limited)

This film takes an inside look at organized crime's use of local New York City bars as money-laundering 'drops'. When lonely Brooklyn bartender Bob Saginowski uncovers a drop of a different sort in the form of a battered pit bull puppy that he rescues from certain death, he comes into contact with Nadia, a mysterious woman hiding a dark past.

James Gandolfini and Tom Hardy together in a crime drama? I'm in, but I'm not too sure about the casting for Noomi Rapace, because she feels out of place here.

Frankie & Alice

Release Date: April 4, 2014

From Lionsgate and Codeblack Films and the executive producers of INTRODUCING DOROTHY DANDRIDGE and LACKAWANNA BLUES comes a mind-bending drama starring Academy Award (R) Winner and Golden Globe (R) Nominee Halle Berry (THE CALL, MONSTER'S BALL). FRANKIE & ALICE is inspired by the remarkable true story of an African American go-go dancer "Frankie" with multiple personalities (dissociative identity disorder or "DID") who struggles to remain her true self while fighting against two very unique alter egos: a seven-year-old child named Genius and a Southern white racist woman named Alice. In order to stop the multiple voices in her head, Frankie (Halle Berry) works together with a psychotherapist (Stellan Skarsgard) to uncover and overcome the mystery of the inner ghosts that haunt her.

Looks like a forgettable made for TV drama, and Berry's post Oscar slide continues, because there's no buzz surrounding this.

Lucy

Release Date: August 8, 2014

From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

Promising trailer, but Luc Besson's name worries me, because he's too hit and miss (From Paris With Love, 3 Days To Kill, etc.) for my taste.

Begin Again

Release Date: July 4, 2014

The latest film from writer-director John Carney (ONCE), BEGIN AGAIN is a soul-stirring comedy about what happens when lost souls meet and make beautiful music together. Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine) are college sweethearts and songwriting partners who decamp for New York when he lands a deal with a major label. But the trappings of his new-found fame soon tempt Dave to stray, and a reeling, lovelorn Gretta is left on her own. Her world takes a turn for the better when Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a disgraced record-label exec, stumbles upon her performing on an East Village stage and is immediately captivated by her raw talent. From this chance encounter emerges an enchanting portrait of a mutually transformative collaboration, set to the soundtrack of a summer in New York City.

It's a dull trailer, but I'll take chance on this for Keira Knightley.

Night Moves

Release Date: May 30, 2014 (limited)

NIGHT MOVES, the fifth feature film from acclaimed filmmaker Kelly Reichardt, is the story of three radical environmentalists coming together to execute the most intense protest of their lives: the explosion of a hydroelectric dam-the very source and symbol of the energy-sucking, resource-devouring industrial culture they despise. Harmon is a former Marine, radicalized by tours of duty overseas. His life in the military is behind him, but at heart he remains the same reckless alpha male he always was, eager for adventure, excited by the prospect of mayhem and destruction. Dena is a high society dropout, sickened by the consumer economy into which she was born. She's moved west and cut ties with her family, edging ever deeper into radical politics. And Josh, their leader, is a self-made militant, devoted to the protection of the Earth by any means necessary. A son of the middle class who works on an organic farm, he's an intensely private person by nature and may have the deepest convictions of them all. NIGHT MOVES is a tale of suspense and a meditation on the consequences of political extremism. When do legitimate convictions truly demand illegal behaviors? What happens to a person's idealism when they find their back against the wall?

What happened to Dakota Fanning and Jesse Eisenberg? A while back, Fanning was on a fast track to becoming a superstar, as one the most popular and praised child actresses in Hollywood. Sure, she had a few bad films in the mix (I guess I'm one of the few people, who actually enjoyed Hide & Seek with Robert De Niro), but that spark is gone.

Eisenberg has Lex Luthor coming up, but I can't remember one good or great film after The Social Network and his Best Actor nomination.

Something Wicked

Release Date: April 4, 2014 (limited)

As a young couple embarks upon their wedding plans, gruesome secrets from their past collide with sinister forces of the present to ensure these newlyweds do not live "happily-ever-after."

It's a posthumous release for Brittany Murphy's final film, but I don't see anything special here. Something Wicked looks like a generic psycho stalker thriller, and this trailer shows too much.
