Bullshit about Movies

Oh none really.

Ever see Mulholland Drive? If not, then get your hands on that bad girl immediately. It has literally everything you could ever want from a movie. Drama? Check. Comedy? Check. Suspense? Check. Horror? Check. Hot ass Lesbianism? Check.

Seriously, the more I watch this film, the more I start to think it's the 2nd or 3rd greatest movie in history.

Yes yes, already viewed that film, though I wouldn't give it that high of a scene. My first viewing taught me much about female *********ion.

GTFO.

Hmm... what about The Lookout or Brick? Seen either of those?

Don't watch those...those movies are pretentious wannabe neo-noir films, TM. Joseph Gordon Levitt's the man, and he has a bright future ahead of him, but he needs to stop making American indie crap (Greg Araki is of course exempt from this comment, as are Larry Clark and Harmony Korine).

Oh PLEASE TDigs, did you just call Brick and The Lookout pretentious crap, and than cite fucking HARMONY KORINE as someone to check out? Seriously? Is there a more pretentious filmmaker on the face of the planet? He's a Lars Von Trier follower, I figured you'd hate him. Gummo was pretty terrible, as was Julien-Donkey Boy.

And Brick was fan-fucking-tastic.

Oh and Gregg Araki is overrated trash as well, he's made a total of 2 good films. Half of his films are total and complete trash, avoid shit like "Smiley Face" like the plague man.

You didn't like Brick?

No.

Now, wait a second Tdigs. I can understand if you feel that way about Brick, but The Lookout? Please explain to me how that movies tries to be anything like a neo-noir film?

I stand corrected on that one. Emotion took over and I made an incorrect generalization. The only thing I liked about The Lookout was that it opened with My Morning Jacket's One Big Holiday. I just found it quite contrived, the pacing was horrible, and I've seen much better "bittersweetly coming to accept one's impairments and standing up for what's right" stories elsewhere (for instance, Copland...that movie's the tits).

Lars Von Trier is absolute shit, but Dogme 95 is far from being so (ironic that the person who created the treatise can't make a good film to save his life). Gummo is one of the most realistic films I have ever seen. No one has better depicted what it's like to live as poor white trash in the Rust Belt. He got everything right: the fucked-up, malnourished-looking kids, pack rat syndrome, grown-up men getting drunk and fighting each other for shits and giggles, everything. Also, Thomas Vinterberg's The Celebration was quite good too.

I wouldn't say that X. Mysterious Skin is a phenomenal movie, man. It really is.

I don't about this either, man. I quite liked Kids and Ken Park, to be honest.

I agree, but it's still one of those movies where you can't help but understand that some people will be put off by it.

Eh, different strokes I guess. I believe most people who didn't like it only didn't because they were expecting something else going into it. But I loved every second of The Lookout. It would probably end up on my top 10 list of 'Films this Decade'.

And Cop Land's okay, but it has nothing on The Lookout.

What rubbed you wrong in Brick, tdigs? I found it to be very enjoyable.

It probably has to do with the fact that I've read a lot of James Ellroy, Raymond Chandler, and Dashiell Hammett. People should stop making noir films, because about 95% of the films that are noir adaptations or that are inspired by noir fiction just flat-out suck. Noir, in my opinion, is just something that can't be translated into screen material very well.

I haven't really read a lot of noir fiction, so I can't say that I really get where you're coming from. It makes sense, but noir/neo-noir is probably my favorite genre. Those films usually hit my core on some level or another. Chinatown, Brick, Maltese Falcon...etc. Maybe I should read some of the books that you're reading.

Gummo is one of the most realistic films I have ever seen.

We are talking about the film involving a central theme of hunting cats and selling their meat to local butchers right? That's a realistic film? Not really, if anything the film utilized surrealistic filmmaking.

Please, Gummo was the most pretentious film I've ever seen. It basically watches as an hour and a half of random scenes that Korine though would look "cool" and "arty" with only the smallest semblance of a plot to connect it. There are certainly some good parts to the film, but overall, it's a massive failure. After crafting something like Kids, how he came up with this pretentious garbage is beyond me. Korine was simply trying way, WAY too hard in that film.

I wouldn't say that X. Mysterious Skin is a phenomenal movie, man. It really is.

I know, that's why I said he's made two good films. Mysterious Skin and Nowhere. The rest of his filmography is trash (Doom Generation is decent).

So do I, I absolutely love Kids. But when Korine steps behind the camera to direct, the results are usually bad.

...some Chinese restaurants do use cat meat. And, it's not uncommon for poor white trash to enjoy killing small animals.

What are you talking about? There are plenty of ethnographies that would corroborate the realism of Gummo.

Over here...:icon_neutral:

I still need to see Nowhere. It's not available on DVD, so it's hard for me to find a copy.

Don't watch that movie. Watch Oldboy instead.

There's something we can all agree on.

Oldboy. Get to it. Your brain will have an orgasm.

I can't agree with it. Oldboy is a GREAT movie, but The Lookout is better in my book. Besides, TM doesn't seem like the type of person who likes foreign film anyway, lol.
