Anime/Manga Discussion

Has anyone recommended Perfect Blue yet? If not watch it! It's an psychlogical thriller film that will keep you guessing the whole way through, Darren Aronofsky owns the rights to it and used bits of it for Requiem for a Dream & Black Swan.

Just got through the first 8 episodes of Fairy Tail and I'm digging it. The jokes are all funny, rarely do they miss and the battle pace is something other animes should start using, fast and not drawn out over 10 episodes.

And the last part is something that you'll find that will remain consistent. And the soundtrack is done by the same guy that did the Naruto and Hell Girl soundtracks, so it's epic.

On a random topic, and Barbosa will likely agree with me, how amazing was Bruce Faulconer's DBZ soundtrack? The techno-feel is great and works perfectly with the show. Love that stuff.

Bruce Faulconer has the best DBZ soundtrack. There's a guy on youtube now that has all the episodes put up, but they're remastered and I think they have the japanese soundtrack. Needless to say it's not very good. Back in the day, I watched Pokemon, Digimon, and DBZ every night that they were on without fail. I also have to be honest here, I thought DBGT was terrible. I don't know how anyone can watch it.

Have to say, the funniest anime i've seen yet is Nichojoi.

Its not in anyway based on action or anything, but the whole show is 'shot' like it is. No matter how normally the scene should be, reality seems fit to break down at any moment. One of the few shows i'v actually laughed out loud at just for the ridiculous scenes they throw in mid show, for no apparent reason.

Here are two of my favourite:

Principle VS Deer:

And the time she dropped the sausage:

If these scenes dont make you laugh, you have no soul!

Up to Ep. 82 in my Dragon Ball run through - the first appearance of Tien.

I must say, I had forgotten how much better the storytelling is in Dragon Ball compared to DBZ.

I attribute the difference to there being something of an overarching plot in Dragonball while there isn't anything of the sort in Z. In Dragonball Goku's goal (after the writer decided to go with one "beyond get the mcguffinballs and parody Journey to the West"), namely the tournaments. Hell the lack of an overall plot is the reason I think that DBZ never should have happened. The best ending wouldn't have been Goku fucking off with Uub, dying against Cell or going down with Freiza. It would have been Goku beating Piccolo jr and finally winning the Tenkaichi Budokai. Hero has achieved his goal, defeated his most powerful foe and saved the world again. I liked DBZ but every arc just seemed tacked on with the intention of FINALLY finishing the motherfucker.

I think there was an overall storyline in DBZ or at least one that was originally aimed at - the supplanting of Goku by Gohan as the strongest fighter.

However, problems seem to have arisen with the popularity of 'secondary' characters, most notably Vegeta, and the writers seem to have somewhat forgotten their main aim. That left both Goku and Gohan - the central characters - lacking any real depth as characters. Development wise, they are far outstripped by Vegeta's arc and perhaps Piccolo's too and their characters are far surpassed interest-wise by villains such as Cell, Buu and even Android 16 (Or at least that is what comes across in the anime).

That is one of the problems with having a hero/heroes that are so pure and obviously good; it leaves them so one-dimensional. That was why I will always maintain that GT missed a big opportunity to develop Goku's character somewhat by having him be Baby's vessel rather than Vegeta. Whilst his good side should have eventually won out when fighting Vegeta/Gohan/Goten/Trunks/Pan, Goku would have been left with the personal scar of having been made to do evil things.

By the time the Piccolo Jr saga was animated, the manga had already been extended to include DBZ. I've read numerous times that DBZ was originally supposed to end at the Frieza saga. I think Toriyama realized that the series was so popular that he created the Cell saga; but the Buu saga was mostly fan service. GT was overkill.

This belongs here

I hope it's not the same crappy rehash stuff they did with DBKai.

Agreed, but I don't believe Piccolo and Vegeta took away from Goku and Gohan. They were contrasts to both of them that really helped both Goku and Gohan in the long run develop as characters. Without Vegeta, Goku would've never embraced his Saiyan heritage and without Piccolo, Gohan's pacifism wouldn't be such a focal point for him. And for the villains, they came out of nowhere most of the time. Establishing them was enjoyable for me. Always nice to know the background of the wannabe universal terror of the week. Though it irked me how many turned good.

In my opinion the Buu saga crippled Goku and Gohan's character development in favor of Vegeta's and showing off new gimmicks.

The storyline in Dragon Ball was really quite dull; the entire series is driven by the fight scenes. That's not necessarily a bad thing though considering that those battles inspired quite a few shonen series to come.

Naruto is a series driven by the overall storyline, but it's quite obvious [Naruto vs Pain being a prime example] that Kishimoto was influenced by Toriyama's work.

Really? Because the constant swerves in the plot makes me thing more of Vince Russo honestly. The Uchiha Massacre, Danzo, Pain not being the real leader of Akatsuki, the Rinnegan stuff, etc.

Madara and Tobi aren't the same guy, which doesn't really shock me. I hear it's finishing which I don't really like seeing how preferred the whole "missions" format rather than this crazy war arc.

Have you read the newest manga chapter? Shit's getting really deep.

It supports my theory that Tobi is a chimera of different dead ninja's under the guise of Madara Uchiha. We saw what the real Madara can do; that huy has powers that make Aizen from Bleach look like shit.

It is supposed to be the next Dragonball Z movie, taking place after the defeat of Majin Buu. No mention of it taking into account the events of Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! though.

For my money, Vegeta's development regularly takes precedent over that of both Goku and Gohan long before the Buu Saga. Even at the times of their greatest achievements, Vegeta plays a major role in them or is the one to demonstrate the actual development. Again I would say that that is due to the problem with having pure heroes - there is very little to explore.

Personally, I would argue that Goku never embraces his Saiyan heritage, mainly because that heritage is one of an horrendously savage race that sold themselves to the highest bidder and had no trouble murdering billions. Sure, he utilises the power of his bloodline and he enjoys fighting but he did that before he found out he was a Saiyan.

Are you talking about the Dragon Ball or DBZ? Anime or manga?

Personally, from the re-viewing DB over the last week or so, I would deny that it is driven by the fight scenes. That is a more an accusation against DBZ. The story for DB, the first half at least, is the finding of the Dragonballs (split up by the Martial Arts Tournament). The fights are a consequence of the story, not the actual story.

Would make sense.
About time we get an insanely powerful ninja that is actuall not human rather than a human with really fancy jutsu.

I think I posted this somewhere in these forums before but Scrapped Princess is a mini series that is a favourite of mine.

24 Episodes in all and great animation and music. English dub seem to be horrible though.

It's on my to watch list; it was recommended by Funimation after I watched The Sacred Blacksmith.

Just finished watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. First season is awesome and has lots of great moments. The second was OK. But the whole "impending apocalypse" thing really weighs things down. Anyone else seen it?

I have not; the only character I know from that series is Yoko Littner, and for obvious reasons.

Just finished my run through of Dragonball and I can safely say that while Goku/Tien in the final of the 22nd World Tournament was the best fight, my favourite in the entire series was the final of the previous tournament between Goku and Jackie Chun - a real gem.
