Elfen Lied

Patlabor Series
Otogi Zoshi
Karas - Bit mental to be honest but worth a watch

Pokemon & Digimon count as Anime? Or Manga? As you can tell, I clearly don't know the difference between Manga and Anime.

All I've watched is Dragonball Z/GT/Abridged

Haven't seen all of Abridged for some reason, just seen the shit that goes down on Namek. Currently watching the original Dragonball for the first time, surprisingly enjoyable.

Anime = cartoon
Manga = comic

On Topic:

Outlaw Star
Cowboy Bebop
Dragonball
Dragonball Z
Dragonball GT
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
The first series of Pokemon is consistently good (it turns to crap right after but the first series is good)

currently watching Naruto (upto the invasion of Konoha arc right now) and I have fond memories of BeyBlade from my childhood, although I doubt it would be anything other than suck nowadays.

Western cartoons have produced some quality shows too, though most of them are ten years old or more.

Batman: TAS (arguably the greatest animated series in history)
Justice League
Justice League: Unlimited
Samurai Jack
Star Wars: Clone Wars (Genndy Tartakovsky's ones)

I'm sure I'm missing some (lots) of shows but they're the ones that immediately spring to mind.

So Anime IS cartoon. Why do so many people get irritated when Anime is called cartoon then?

That was very much a simplified description to help you out.

Some people do get pissy about it but usually it's people who view the word cartoon as childish, in reality it originates from "carta" which means paper, cartoons are, by strict definition single images that tell a story, like the political cartoons in news media. The terms are synonymous but usually people who get pissy are idiotic pedants who like to split hairs over trivialities.

EDIT: I should add that the term anime usually refers to cartoons of Japanese origin with a Japanese audience in mind. Thundercats for example is not often considered anime, because even though it was made in Japan, it was intended primarily for western audiences.

Cartoons are normally highly childish and normally designed exclusively for children. So calling most anime, animated series designated for older people and cartoons is kinda inaccurate.

I've only seen a handful of anime's, but the ones I have I've thoroughly enjoyed:

Bleach: Friend introduced it to me three years ago, and blitzed 200-ish episodes in just over a month. Such an annoying show; when it's on form it's epic, but it really falls flat at times through laziness and stupidity. Have given up on it since the Aizen arc ended; I just don't have the patience with it anymore.

Darker Than Black: Ahhh, the originator of my BK201 name on this site :) Love this show so much. A bit tedious in places, and relies on you to not want all the answers, but good none the less. Two very different seasons, with number two being my favorite. But not by much.

Gurren Lagann: If you get a chance to watch it, give it a few episodes and...just...YES! Epic in every conceivable way, and then halfway through it manages to step up a gear infinitely and become something truly fucking awesome. My favorite anime, and one of my favorite shows, by far. And so fucking quotable!

Digimon: Season one and two...couldn't get enough. Rewatched season 2 a while ago and while the dub hasn't aged well, it still had the same charm and was just brilliant. Never finished Tamers, but from what I've watched of that I enjoyed it.

Ergo Proxy: Very interesting anime. Not action heavy, so a little dull and tedious at times, but it has some fucking cool moments. A bit of a thinky-anime, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but not for everyone.

I've yet to finish Death Note and I've only watched the first 9 episodes of Fairy Tail, but I've enjoyed both of them. Naruto just doesn't grab me, and I think I've missed the boat on Dragonball. I did, like most kids, also watch Pokemon, and still play the games, but lost interest with the anime a LONG time ago.

If there's one thing that turns me off about Bleach it's complicated names to most of the stuff on the show. It jars me. For some reason.

I REALLY enjoyed the first few episodes I saw. Utter fun.

Finish it. Very awesome season Tamer was. What part did you stop at?

Totally forgot I saw this one. In Spanish. Dub didn't click.

I'm actually really good with most of the names and terms. What annoys me is that they solve most of the plot questions with more questions, and never answer them despite the fact that they're pretty damn important. Amongst other things, it's really made me lose patience with it.

The entire series is on Youtube. If you can, finish it. Trust me when I tell you, you will not believe just how big and ridiculous and awesome it gets by the end. Also, one of the few anime's I've seen where the English dub blows the original out of the water. How far did you get into it?

I've given it a couple of goes, and always get caught around ten episodes in and end up not following up. It's around the point where Renamon finally gets to her champion form, and I end up just not having time for various reasons when I get to that fucking episode. I will finish it, eventually.

It was a bit meh for me. At points I really enjoyed it, but I watched it whilst I was watching Darker Than Black, and there's no real competition between the two in my eyes.

Like what? The arc following Aizen's defeat answers quite a few questions.

Like what? The arc following Aizen's defeat answers quite a few questions.

Ah, I haven't kept up to date with it in a while. Literally, as Aizen was beaten I kinda drifted out. I dipped back into the manga for a while so I know the premise of the arc that followed, but for whatever reason just didn't carry on with it. So my questions could be of my own fault, and it's possible that I've missed a LOT.

One of my main issues was Isshin. (I'm gonna put it into spoiler tags just in case anyone reading hasn't seen it and is likely to)

It could possibly have been answered by now, but...who is he? So, he's a soul reaper, and a captain level one, with a white cape-like thing that resembles a captain's haori, but why is he not in Soul Society? It explains why Ichigo has Shinigami powers, but then we don't really know anything about Isshin. How is he able to have kids? Does his Engetsu mean that Shinigami relations have similar zanpakuto (okay, that one isn't that important, just a personal preferance).

Also, everything surrounding the Soul King. Again, a question that could be of my own doing as I haven't kept up to date, but who/what is he? For such a big part of Aizen's plans, we never actually saw him/it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but something of him should have been shown, surely?

There may be more that I have issue with, but it's currently 2am here in the UK and while I'm having trouble sleeping, my brain doesn't want to function. That, and I am very nitpicky.

Your question about Isshin hasn't been answered yet, but the arc after Aizen's defeat does answer how Ichigo gets his powers back, and why he was even given them in the first place.

Also the new arc after that one has been pretty good so far, really slow, but pretty good. Lots of returns from old characters, some expected and others not at all. I'll leave this here as an example, but don't click on it if you aren't up to date with the series and don't want to be spoiled.

Fairy Tail evokes emotion from the reader/viewer regardless if it makes them laugh, cry, or makes them angry. And the characters are designed so expertly, it's hard to deny any of them their spot. Prime example is Mirajane; most fans would have labeled her completely useless and a burden until about halfway through the series, where she becomes most fans [including me] favorite character in the series or instant top three.

Mira is my favourite too. I agree Fairy Tail is one of the few manga/anime that actually made me tear a little with Lisanna's story and then Lucy's. It puts many 'serious' series to shame with its ability to evoke emotions. I'm a big fan of the series but I get why some people want a serious story after investing time in it instead of the random goof off from time to time in the series.

What little filler that's in the series is really good; and actually Mashima even went as far as to make the filler arc that they're doing semi-canon by mentioning it in the manga. The man's extremely dedicated.

Two things I've found about Mashima...

1.) He's likes well developed female characters. His women are arguably the best written in all of shonen right now.

2.) He has a boob fetish; practically all of the women have huge breasts save for like one.

I agree. Erza is one of the better female characters. Mashima is definitely a perv lol. If he wants to focus on a female character at any time, she will start to wear more revealing outfits and her boobs will suddenly become bigger.

On a random topic, and Barbosa will likely agree with me, how amazing was Bruce Faulconer's DBZ soundtrack? The techno-feel is great and works perfectly with the show. Love that stuff.

It's been a long time since I've watched or read any anime and manga, but lately I've been wanting to get back into this stuff. This thread couldn't have been made at a more perfect time.

---

I lost all my scans of Pokemon Special years ago, but was able to read up to the Emerald chapter. Diamond/Pearl hadn't been translated to English at the time, so I never caught up with the manga after that. Definitely one of my favorites.

Fuan no Tane is a manga compilation of short horror stories and urban legends. It legit creeped the hell out of me when I first read 'em. Right meow I was on tumblr looking for something to share with y'all and I found a horror manga blog... :D I think I'mma start reading horror now.

I'm puzzled but not surprised by the lack of Hayao Miyazaki and Makoto Shinkai in this thread. Can't say I've watched anything of Miyazaki's besides Spirited Away, but his stuff is very popular so I figured his stuff would've been mentioned here. I really like 5 Centimeters Per Second, it's so beautiful and heartwrenching!

It is a very trollish anime

Pardon my ignorance, but what does trollish mean?

To me it means trying to get a reaction with recurring gags or by doing something irrelevant. For example Mashima did a timeskip for the story probably because all the other big Shounen did it. Other Shounens did timeskips to refresh the main characters for readers/viewers and to explain the difference in power levels. Fairy Tail's main characters are the same as before. He did it for the LuLz and maybe to show how it was a lame plot device. Having said that, if you read his other work, Rave Master he can do a decent time shifted story so the timeskip in Fairy Tail might be relevant to future plot.

We've yet to see the purpose behind the time skip, other than to build Sabertooth as he's obviously building towards something HUGE in the current arc.

The power level differences in Fairy Tail are quite obvious. There isn't anyone in the series that can't be classified on a certain tier. For example you'd have Zeref, Hades and high end Wizard Saints on the highest tier; mages like Gildarts, Bluenote, Laxus, Zero, and Earthland Byro on the second highest tier; and mages like Erza, Ultear, Natsu, Gray, and Mirajane on the third tier.

And then dragons like Acnologia are even stronger than the humans.

Lucky Star was awesome. I'd rank it as the 3rd funniest series I've seen behind Ranma and Nagasarete Airantou.

I think Natsu with plot armour > Zeref > everyone else. Although Mavis should be high up in the powerlevel since she can give her spells to anyone she like and also somehow found a way to be immortal by being a spirit. lulz

I won't speak on Natsu and Zeref until I know Zeref's relationship with the dragons. If Zeref turns out to be a Dragonslayer, that would make things more interesting.

I theorize that Mavis's ability to stay corporal after death comes from Lumen Histoire.

Have to laugh at some of the places the Dragonballs manage to get into in the space of a year.

Just watched the General Blue Saga episode where despite it not being not that much more than a year after Oolong's wish at Pilaf's palace, the 3 Star Dragonball has managed to find it's way into a long dead pirate's skeletal mouth at the bottom of a deep pool of water at the bottom of a centuries-abandoned, underwater Pirate Cave.
