Who can defeat Andre the Giant?

Nope. Not even in a ladder match.

Really depends who is booking it and what era the match would actually take place.

70s to early 80s? Andre probably
90s when Goldberg was one of the hottest things going? Goldberg goes over him.

Who was the bigger star overall, Goldberg or Andre? Andre easily. Goldberg's popularity plummeted after he lost the belt. He couldn't even beat a past prime Bret Hart. Andre remained relevant in pop culture even years after his death. Andre would win regardless.

Streak isn't a prime. Taker would lose otherwise. Brock is a terrible draw. Seems likely you'd fail your own IQ test.

My equation is correct regardless of your variable.

Also, if you choose to vote by attendance & dollars, thats cool. I vote on who can beat the guy & who would be booked to win. Lesnar would hurt Andre. You know, the guy who can toss around very large people like they are babies? If Hogan hitting a bodyslam was a huge moment, I would say Brock tossing him with an F-5 would be quite impressive now, so fans back then would have shit themselves.

John Cena. The Rock.

I don’t think Austin would beat Andre in the first encounter, but he will win the next encounter and the rubber match.

If Lesnar faces him now under the hardcore rules that he’s accustomed to, I think Lesnar beats him.

It's the money and whatnot that proves who would be more likely to be booked to win.

This is subjective thinking. I can easily counter it with my own. "Andre was strong enough to easily flip over cars. He'd grab Lesnar by the throat, choke him out, and go on his merry giant way."

That type of argument holds no more water than simply voting for your favorite.

You don't think Austin would beat Andre the first time around, but Rock and Cena would? I'm confused. All 3 are bigger than Andre anyway.

It has to do more with Austin's booking. If I remember correctly, Austin would always lose the first match of a major encounter with an opponent. It happened with Bret, Undertaker, Kane, and I think even with HHH when he became a major player.

Kayfabe booking has nothing to do with this. Austin was a bigger star. Period. He'd be booked to win a one off match against Andre. Just like Andre would be booked to beat the likes of Taker, Lesnar, Michaels, Hart etc etc. Because he was the bigger star.

Del Rio wouldn't win, but he'd be booked against André five times, then once more for good measure.

By booking standpoint,

Goldberg in 1998

Brock Lesnar in 2003

Both were booked as unstoppable powerhouses.

Wasn't Andre initially booked to win their match, and just gave up because Maeda kept shooting?

It doesn't really matter who was booked to win. Andre was an oversized, overrated alcoholic who was so hammered during that match that he was incapable of doing anything other than stumble and get his ass kicked in. Andre wasn't a good wrestler. Hell, he wasn't even a good draw, the 'aura' (read: how he was promoted) drew but the guy himself? Not so much. There's a reason promoters would only book him once before telling him to fuck off to the next territory. Namely that nobody in their right mind would pay to see the lump twice. People would pay to see 'The Eighth Wonder of the World', but once they realise it's Andre they aren't going to pay the next time he's on a card. It's easy to rack up a lot of wins when you rarely wrestle the same people more than once.

Back to the point. Who'd beat Andre? Fucking anybody possessing even the smallest amount of shoot training. So the list starts with Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar then goes three times around the block. Now fuck off back to the Outskirts Battledome if you want to have this sort of fanwank 'debate'.

You kno who beats a prime Andre?

Anybody who made the company money by beating him. So guys like Lesnar, Goldberg, hell, even Ryback.... they would have gone over. You know how you build a montster? Have him beat the big guy. That's what they use BIg Show for.

Except a prime Ryback didn't even go over Punk, who we both agree is bad.

Wasn't Andre The Giant a mid part of the main event that drew more than 30 million fans on television? Wasn't he also the one alongside Hogan that main evented and filled WrestleMania 3? And that was not Andre in his prime... Also Andre is part of pop culture in the whole world - Obey Shirts anyone? "The Eighth Wonder of the World"? There are a handful of people bigger than him. If WWF had worldwide television like they do now, you better believe he would be a gigantic (no pun) draw anywhere. He was a big deal in Japan, US and Canada and that is great for the 70's/80's. If he was a heel he would be losing to babyfaces on a role, such as Hogan and Warrior... But as a babyface, he rarely lost. Specially not in the US.
