What's more important in getting over?

So, for my 600th post I wanted to start a thread that could spark a decent debate and I got to thinking. I was watching some old Stone Cold footage and realised he had his great match's, no doubt but the biggest thing that got him over was his promo's. Same sort of thing with The Rock. Then you have someone like Shawn Michaels who get's over probably more on the in ring work more than promos. I know back in the day he cut great promo's too but when I think of Michaels the first thing that comes to mind is his ring work. When I think of Stone Cold or The Rock I think of their awesome promo's and storylines.

What do you think is more important or successfull in wrestling between in ring work and promo's in getting over?

I tend to lean more towards promo work and character development side more so than than the actual wrestling side. I mean, guys like Hulk, The Rock and Stone Cold (3 of the most popular wrestlers ever) got over so much because of their promo work and characters. Of course there ar guys like Angle, Benoit, Mysterio and Jeff Hardy that probably got over more because of the match's and ring work they were displaying.

So there are arguments for both sides and I'm interested to hear what you guys think. Post away.

I think that it really depends on the worker. If your Hulk Hogan or Superstar Billy Graham, your not getting over with in ring skills. That's when character and promos are going to really help out.

But if your someone like Chris Benoit or Bryan Danielson there's no gimmick needed. Wrestlers like this can have amazing matches that they can pull the crowd in.

What really matters over both of these is how they get pushed by promoters. Ron Garvin was a great wrestler, but the NWA World Heavyweight title was put on him way to early. Also guys like Hogan and Cena need to be pushed as supermen to be over, and guys like Nash and Sid destroyed guys before winning any belt.

I think Promos help more. Maby, although ring work helps. back in the wcw and early WWE days i was a huge Chris Benoit fan, but i think his week promos hurt him. Despite his great ring work he didn't win WCW belt until he was leaving.
If you are a high flyer tho you don't need good promos. people who can jump around and do flips get over easily without talking. they just rarely make it to ME level.
Cena isn't to good in the ring but he can talk so he is ME.
Bastia is not good anywhere and he is a ME
Jeff hardy is not good on Mic and he was a ME
Different strokes for different folks i guess but Mic skill are a must in the long run if you are going to stay around. it also helps to have the ME look.

It really depends on the wrestler. What makes someone over is his unique speciality. Wrestlers generally get over by their in ring skills or promo skills but some wrestler are over because of promo nor in ring skills.

For example to get over with your wrestling skills pure technical skills are not enough. You have to have some uniqueness. Right now the biggest example is John Morrison he is probably the most entertaining guy in ring but what makes him over is his exciting high flying manuevers or what made Benoit over was his intensity in the ring. It's almost same with Angle,Guerrero,Michaels and all the others that got over because of their in ring skills. Thats why Dean Malenko couldn't get over he was just an ordinary wrestler with a trunk he didn't offer anything different in the ring.

It's same with promos. Charisma factor also plays in this as well but just watch Hogan,Austin and Rock's promos they are all unique to themselves there'll be nobody that'll cut a promo like Rock did. Cm Punk is considered one of the best promo cutters in WWE right now. Why ? Because his cutting edge promos are unique and haven't been seen before or listen Ric Flair's promos all those promos are unique to themselves.

Like I said before sometimes promo skills nor in ring skills are enough. The biggest example of this is The Undertaker. He got over because of his great gimmick. People didn't care how great his mic skills or in ring skills were they loved him because of his gimmick. Because his gimmick is unique,great and something that's never been seen before. Andre The Giant is an another great example he got over because of his unique incredibly huge size. People did not care his promo or in ring work but he was one of the most over wrestlers in Hogan era.

Everyone is saying that Morrison is new Michaels or Swagger is new Hennig if they are it means they are failure. Maybe your great promo skills and in ring work help you to get over but what makes you over in wrestling business is your unique ability that crowd cares. Foley is without a doubt one of the promo cutters of all time but without his sick bump spots could he be over with his only mic skills ? Hell no. I think that what makes you over in wrestling is your unique ability. Yes if you are talentless piece of crap no one gives a shit about you but my point is only good mic skills and in ring skills sometimes are not enough to get over.

For me personally, i'd probably go with ring skills. If i turned on a random wrestling show and saw some guy i'd never seen before putting on a great match against someone i'd seen wrestle a couple of times, then i'd want to see what else he could do. If his promos were then rubbish, i probably wouldn't care, i'd still want to see him wrestle.

If i turned on a random wrestling show and someone i'd never watched before was giving a promo that really got me into his character, i'd stick around to see how he wrestled. If the match was really shit, i'd probably tune in a few more times to see if he just had one bad match that particular night, and see how he got on with a different opponent, and then maybe give up on him later if he hadn't impressed me in the ring once after 5 or so matches.
