What song are you currently listening to?

Awww sheeeeeeeeeeeet! What a beat!

Since watching "Straight Outta Compton" last weekend, I've been playing alot of rap stuff- N.W.A, Ice Cube, Dre, Snoop, 2Pac, Warren G etc. "Still D.R.E" really is one of the greatest rap songs ever released, it's just iconic. Everyone knows it, everyone loves it. I was walking through Manchester city centre last night and heard it blaring out of 2 different nightclubs!

The instantly recognisable beat is arguably the best of all time, and even as a white english guy, i still love having this blasting out of the stereo when I'm driving. It's still a shame to me that Dre only ever released 2 solo albums before his recent "Compton" release as other than 2Pac, he's my favourite vocalist in rap.

Like Naitch, I've been on an N.W.A/Ice Cube kick, listening to their songs, since watching Straight Outta Compton last week.

Straight Outta Compton was a great film. It was my most anticipated movie this year and it delivered. They left some parts out of the movie like the Dre/Eazy E beef but I can forgive that. Hopefully they get nominated for some awards at this year's Oscars, the actor who played Eazy E deserves one for his portrayal. Can't wait for the sequel, which is gonna focus on Death Row Records.

No Vaseline is my favourite diss track. It's the strongest diss I've ever heard lyrically. Cube goes hard and absolutely destroys every member of N.W.A and Jerry Heller.

While I'm here, I'll leave another great Cube track from off the Amerikkkaz Most Wanted album.

I've recently grown very fond of mashups, especially the obscure masterpieces that very few people have discovered. Some are amusing like when Justin Beiber and Slipknot are mashed together, or amazingly concurrent like when Pink Floyd and The Bee Gees are mashed together.

We are wrestling fans, no? We want a mashup that takes an awesome wrestler's theme and mashes it up with an equally awesome song.

The movie Drive was an awesome romp through 1980's aesthetics to include the wickedly captivating soundtrack, the composer of which appears to be the creative force behind the movie itself as events in the movie seem to vaguely paraphrase the narrative of the composer's alter-ego "Kavinsky". The main theme to Drive was a haunting tune with lyrics that echo through a cleverly designed sound distortion, only to be later picked up by the seductive female vocals.

Pentagon Jr. is a pro-wrestler who goes beyond the simple Rudo stylings of his storyline father, he's presented as a type of martial arts savant who is fueled by an undying desire to conquer and destroy. Imagine if Darth Maul became a ninja.

When these two influences combine their mojo, you get this obscure masterpiece:

One of THE most underrated bands of the UK's mid-90's brit-pop era, and arguably one of the most underrated of all time. A fantastic band, brilliant live and it's a shame they only do greatest hits tours now, rather than producing any more new material.

Shed Seven's "Going For Gold" Best Of collection is absolutely phenomenal, and this is one of my favourite tracks off it, with the guitars kicking in after the first line sung brilliantly by Rick Witter (who've I've met in person- a really nice bloke) and as with most Shed tracks it builds to be a great chorus that will get stuck in your head for days.

Most casual listeners will know their bigger hits "Chasing Rainbows" and "Going For Gold", but give this a try...it's a fucking belter of a tune.

This is off the It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa EP, which was Eazy's response to Dre and Snoop Dogg dissing him on The Chronic and an entire album devoted to dissing Dre, Snoop & Death Row Records. Real Muthaphuckin G'z is the most famous track off that album and my favourite, It's On is my second favourite. The beat sounds like Nuthin But A G Thang and the lyrics contain word plays on lines off of Deep Cover, Nuthin' But A G Thang and Fuck Wit Dre Day.

Another track off the same album. This is mostly about being "higher than a motherfucker" and is a play off Dre calling his album "The Chronic". I don't smoke weed, marijuana or do any drugs but I imagine this might be awesome to listen to while being high, lol.

BTW, I believe they'll address the Eazy E/Ruthless Records vs. Dr. Dre/Death Row Records feud in the Straight Outta Compton sequel.

A true Metallica classic! I've been looking at their set list for their show at the Leeds Festival last month, and man I wish I had been there!

Pretty much every song is a stone cold classic in the set, guaranteed to get the crowd rocking big time! This is obviously one of those songs, and when that riff starts you know shit is about to go crazy!!

I'm definitely going to get a ticket to watch 'Tallica on their next tour in the UK (if that ever happens!) or next time they make a festival appearance over here as they are one of the bands I have always wanted to see, but haven't as yet.

Dude it was immense. I was nowhere near the front and was about halfway to the back but it was still immense. It just goes to show how great they are when the audience even all the way to the back is enamoured with their performance

So I realised Parkway Drive are releasing a new album and this is one of the tracks. Not only do I find the video awesome with the rooms moving about with the godlike beings moving the block around the lyrics are great as well. Really makes you think what we do as human beings.

So I was looking up tabs for Motorhead's Line In The Sand song (the Evolution song) and it as I typed it up it came up with Bleeding Through. So I checked it out as I've got the Declaration album by them and it's really good. I always like when a heavy band can change direction and give a slow melodic song and this is great.

So I swa Beartooth at Leeds fest and enjoyed but didn't really think of following it up. A few days ago I saw an advert for their tour and remembered 'I liked those guys' checked out where they were playing and unfortunately they were sold out. Anyway I decided to check them out again and really dig it. For those of you who like the metalcore sound but not the vocals so much this is better. The screams in this are more nu-metal like (think Deftones) and the guys cleans are pretty good as well.

I didn't even realise this was the single from the new Stereophonics album, it felt so familiar when I heard it that I assumed it was from one of their earlier releases, but nope it's brand new.

It's nothing groundbreaking, pretty much standard from the Stezza's, but after 20+ years it shows Kelly Jones hasn't lost his talent for banging out quality single after quality single. I don't think I have ever not enjoyed a single from Stereophonics which shows just what an ear for a tune Kelly has.

I'm considering picking up the new album, but their more recent albums have been a bit hit and miss throughout, so I'll wait and read some reviews before deciding whether to buy it or not.

After months of waiting, the new New Order album has been released, and damn it's good!

This was one of the 2 tracks they leaked before dropping the album and it's probably my favourite on the record, and sounds like the old school electronic/dance era New Order, rather than the more straight-forward rock of their last 2 albums. I expect it will be in the set list for the gig in November.

The new album has got really good reviews, and is being hailed as a return to form, which is great to see as its the first NO record without their long-time bassist Peter Hook, who's sound was so crucial to the band. I do think the album is missing some Hooky basslines, but it's still brilliant.

Who here doesn't love a little bit of obscure old school synth-pop in their lives?

Pink Floyd was one of the most memorable bands for their life-span as a foursome of amazingly talented artists. Eventually the band's leader Roger Waters got bored of his group and decided to boot out their keyboardist, Richard Wright. Richard Wright was allowed to play the Wall tour, but had no part of the final album the band would release with Roger Waters' blessing, The Final Cut.

Richard Wright, who passed on in 2008, wasn't the type to push back against the ego of Pink Floyd's front man. He did however prove that he was a valid creative force behind the band's unique sound by starting his own group after being ousted from Pink Floyd.

Richard Wright started a group with vocalist David Harris called Zee. Here is their greatest work in my humble opinion, Seems We Were Dreaming.

I love that song because you can really hear the wave of sounds that were noticeably absent from Pink Floyd's style when The Final Cut was released. If it's your cup of tea; you can really appreciate the contribution of a man deemed too useless to be allowed to remain with Pink Floyd.

Since being introduced to him a few years ago, I've become a huge fan of Dan Reed, both of his mellow solo material, and his earlier 80's "funk rock" of The Dan Reed Network (who he reformed a couple of years ago).

He's recently released his 3rd solo album, but this is from his first release from 2010. A very powerful track with brilliant, soulful lyrics from Dan. He is one of the few artists I've seen who sounds even better live than on CD, which is really rare.

I showed my Mum his material last year and she loved it, so I ended up buying her his CDs as some of her christmas presents, and tonight I'm taking her to see him live in Liverpool. It'll be the first time she's seen him live, and the 7th time for me (6 as solo, 1 DRN). I'm looking forward to it.

Here's a challenge for anyone that wants to play. Check out the music that was popular the year you were born. Select whichever one appeals to you the most and talk about why you enjoy it.

I was born in 1989. This is my selection:

Some of you may actually recognize the beginning of this song, since it was sampled from Eminem's own "Toy Soldiers" in the early 2000s. Shit, now that I look at the chart toppers of 1989, you'd be surprised how many ballads were about lost love. "Turn Back Time", "Right Here Waiting" etc. But this one is different- mostly because it's not even about love at all, but drug addiction, according to the singer herself. This song interests me a great deal since really it could be about anything for the listener- war, politics, fighting with former friends (what Eminem sort of touched on), growing up, drugs, etc. Just dig that chorus.

And that haunting line "Won't you come out and play with me?" sung by children. Goosebumps, man. Emotional song.

The Twang are one of the many indie bands who burst onto the scene in the mid 2000s with a hugely successful debut album, but haven't been able to maintain their success. They're a very talented group of lads, but the 4 albums they've done have declined in quality each time. I've got them all and was very disappointed with the latest release.

"Whoah Man" is more of a gentle track from their 3rd album, and I had it playing on the way to work this morning. I've always thought of The Twang as one of "My bands", and hope their next album is better. They're still a great live band, the crowd always goes crazy, and I've seen them 5 times so far.

The music world is saturated with obscure names, you explore your favorite genre until you've had your fix and then take a break to indulge in something else. Sometimes you've had your fill and you wonder if you should observe one more obscure name, just in case it might be the most amazing sound you've ever heard.

Today; I watched a video by a man I've never heard of before, and it was amazing. An artist named Tim Buckley created music while battling drug addiction, and sadly he lost that battle in 1975 at the age of 28. He was never famous during his lifetime, he was an obscure act that would occasionally be shown on tv to an audience made passive by the over-abundance of music acts being presented to them. I believe that their over-indulgence made them unaware of the amazing sound they were being offered.

Decades later; Song of the Siren by Tim Buckley is recognized by one obscure fan of music as the most emotionally moving song he's ever heard.

Have you ever been haunted by "that one song"? You hear it in the background, and it haunts you. You can't describe it because it doesn't contain any lyrics, and it goes unaccredited from any production that makes use of it. That one song was, for many people, Sirius by Alan Parson's Project. It was released in 1982, the year my gestation came to fruition.

Very rarely does a sound come along that can be defined as unique, and at the same time pleasing to the senses. Artists experiment with ideas and take shots in the dark in terms of creating a musical example of their imagination. This song, for me, invokes the same feeling of discovery I imagine that Alan Parsons had felt when developing this masterpiece. You start at a mental state of having an obscure idea that builds upon itself exponentially as your mind races to cross a frontier of self-discovery.

I'm also big on Chicago teams, and many of you might remember this as the entrance theme for the Chicago Bulls during home games.

I don't have that many "live" tracks on my iTunes, and the ones I do have tend to be from full live albums (e.g. Nirvana unplugged, Oasis- Familiar To Millions etc), but I love this version of the Iron Maiden classic. It's so good, that the band chose to include it on their "Edward The Great" compilation album ahead of the regular album version.

It truly shows what Iron Maiden are all about as a live band, and the sound of the Rio crowd roaring along to the tune even before the vocals kick in is phenomenal. I was playing Maiden in the car with my Mum this weekend, and while she likes rock music she never took to Iron Maiden. However, she said she really enjoyed this one. I regularly make her compilation CDs with songs I think she'll like, so I'll be sure to include "Fear of the Dark LIVE" on the next one I do.

"SCRREEEEEEAM FOR ME BRAZZIIIIIIIIILLLLL!"

Goin' down now!

When Dave Wyndorf says those 3 words, and that riff kicks in....DAMNNNN!

I was SO pleased that Monster Magnet played this live when I saw them in Feb 2014, that is a serious riff. There isn't any of the psychodelic space-rock that MM or famed for on this one, just straight out monster rock, and I love it. To be honest I think I probably prefer slow heavier riffs like this instead of really fast ones usually.

This was on The Matrix soundtrack, so if people recognize the song, that's probably where you heard it. But, I do recommend checking out some more of MM's material, they are a great band. They did Matt Hardy's "Live For The Moment" WWE theme.

Found this band while randomly listening to Apocalyptica on youtube. Caught me off guard, and I enjoyed the Iron Maiden-esque sound. went on to listen to a few more songs, and I think I'm a fan.

Everything is made better by one magic word, "Super".

Super Nintendo, Super Tramp, Super Dragon.

Super is better than hyper, ultra and mega combined. Super also sounds really stupid, which is endearing to those of us who don't learn good. Super has universal appeal, it invades your senses and makes your mind dump every ounce of dopamine through your system.

It's in your nature to love the word "super" unconditionally, your "Super Nature" is in full effect.

An artist named Cerrone rocked the disco world with this revelation with his abstract mess of nonsense that somehow resulted in the most super of all songs carrying the super name.

Anthropomorphic mice, forest dryads and multicolored drums. Enjoy!

I was listening to this on my 80s playlist. It was the first Spandau Ballet song I ever heard and I randomly decided to learn it on my guitar. It's pretty easy but still really fun. The bass solo is really cool to be fair

In preparation for seeing my 3rd Happy Mondays gig on Friday, I've been playing their most famous and successful album this week. They're supposed to be playing the album in full on this tour (it's the 25th anniversary of the original release), as well as a few more classic tracks at the end of the gig.

With Shaun Ryder now being totally sober, Mondays gigs are arguably the best they've ever been. I'm looking forward to hearing those Madchester beats, Shaun's unmistakeable drawling vocals and seeing Bez's manic "freaky dancing", as I enjoy a couple of well-deserved beers after the working week!

This was in 2006, but as usual Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre created another great track together. Dre produces a fantastic piano beat and the lyrics are really good, basically asking us to imagine a world without hip-hop. Moving song. The fan made video is good aswell and apart from the lips moving & singing, it goes well with the song.
