The rule on "intelligent defense" was clarified years ago by John McCarthy. Simply covering your head and making no other movement is NOT intelligent defense by Athletic Commission standards. Faber tried to play it off like he had control of Renan's leg, and if that was the case then he should have been making an attempt to move forward and pull the single leg. But the fact is if he had done anything but cover his head he would have probably eaten a fight-ending shot from another angle in attempting to move.
Urijah is a tough dude, and I respect the hell out of his opinion but he was getting tagged on the feet and wobbling around the cage even before the onslaught that Renan was throwing... I don't think it was a bad stoppage at all, and Rogan was trying to stir the pot way too fucking much after the fight.
22-fight win streak for Renan as it stands right now, and he's dominated everybody. I'd say he and Jon Jones are running a neck race for #1 P4P right now, and Jones is only up there due to the strength of his victories by name value. Renan has put away some really talented guys that just don't have the name recognition that some of Jones' opponents have.
Edit: I was kind of surprised that Aldo wasn't able to finish Lamas, but still excited that he won and we're going to get to see an exciting SuperFight out of the deal. I think Pettis has all the tools to bring the best out of Aldo.
Overeem looked impressive as hell last night too. I was way more impressed by him dominating Mir in every aspect for 15 minutes than I would have been had he KO'd Mir. His gas tank looked vastly improved, first time I've seen him in a post-fight where he wasn't huffing and puffing, and sucking in all the oxygen around him. If that Overeem shows up to fight every time then everybody should be put on notice.
Edit Edit:
Fedor/Hendo
I missed the show tonight. I thought for sure though that it was going to be upset city. Couldn't have been more wrong.
You felt that was an early stoppage? I felt it was more than justified because Fedor was laying belly down and eating punches to the side of the head from arguably one of the hardest hitters in the sports' history. It looked like Fedor had "recovered" but that's only because Dean stepped in and Henderson had released the back control he had over Fedor. Fedor went out after the first two punches landed, and the third punch brought him back to reality as he turned over. I respect any fighter who says "Don't stop it until there's a limp body" but unfortunately that's not really ideal for the sports' image or future standing as a respectable form of combat. If that kind of ruling goes into effect then we'll quickly be back into the dark ages.
