The Technology Troubleshooting Thread

I tried uploading a video I made to Youtube. The first half doesn't work properly (only the audio does) but the second part works fine. It all runs perfectly fine when I watch it using Quicktime though.

What kind of video file (.mpg, .flv, wmv, etc.)? How long is it? What's the file size? Does it work when you try to play it in Windows Media Player or VLC?

For the record, Quicktime sucks. I refuse to assist someone who has only tested in Quicktime. :)

It's a .mov file, I made it using Final Cut Pro. It works fine on VLC and on Realplayer, only the audio works on Windows Media Player

I would think YouTube would accept that, but it's possible the codec you used isn't support. Try converting it to another file type, and see if that works (or export as a different file type from Final Cut Pro, is possible). No need to worry about loss of quality, as YouTube upload will do that anyways.

How do i allow for editing of PDF documents using Adobe Reader 9? Nearly anything i get has digital rights enabled. Is there any method to turning that off?

No there isn't and Reader typically isn't allowed to make any sort of edits to PDF files. The program you will want is Adobe Acrobat, and even then editing a PDF that you yourself didn't create is very limiting if not impossible due to digital rights. Digital rights are an extension added to the PDF to prevent any sort of modification to the PDF and is put there by the PDF creator.

What kind of modifications were you looking at doing? It may be a moot point since the PDF's you're receiving have digital rights enabled, but with Adobe Acrobat you might be able to edit something in the PDF. Adobe Reader is just there for reading the PDF files and that is it.

What Ty said, except instead of using Acrobat (which costs money), try Nitro Reader Free. It's not quite as good as Acrobat, or as robust, but it is free. If it does what you need, no bother with purchasing Acrobat.

I actually had Acrobat on this laptop. It's the trial version though, i'll use your suggestion when it expires. Thanks a lot.

So I was trying to burn this downloaded music MP3 file I bought from Amazon to a disc. It's supposed to be an MP3 file, but every time I drop it into the playlist I get this "some files could not be added because the formats are not supported or the files could not be found" message, and then it rejects the track I'm trying to burn. I've tried using different programs to burn the MP3 file, but I keep getting the same message. Can I do something about this, or is it just a lost cause at this point?

Does the song play? Are you sure you're not trying to add a shortcut? Have you tried restarting your computer and retrying?

I need some tech help from one of you iPhone guru's out there.

I am an owner of an iPhone 4S, and ever since the update my phone likes to vibrate or make a incoming mail message seemingly at Random. I've tried my best to simply shrug it off and ignore it, but now it is just starting to bother me.

I do have the recent software update, and I logged off the email in hopes for it to stop.

It seems like a software problem that would probably need to be fixed via restoring to factory settings or simply waiting for the next update (iOS 6.1) and hoping it gets fixed that way. I recall having a similar problem back on my iPhone 4 and I googled frantically for a solution but eventually with the next update, it just disappeared. Keep your head, keep your heart strong.

Quick question, I've been trying to get all my music into iTunes but because I burned a lot of albums with Windows Media Player, they are wma files rather than mp3, so are there any programs that will convert wma to mp3 or am I as well to just burn the original cds into iTunes?

Edit - I'm using a MacBook rather than a laptop now too, just in case that makes a difference.

Have you tried this?

I have now but iTunes still wont let the wma's join in the fun unfortunately. I tried importing from the menus as well as dragging and dropping but to no avail. I'll potter about with it some more over the next couple of days I'm sure/

Cheers anyway!

There are a lot of ways to do it song by song, but that would take a long time.

If you're planning on converting just so you can get them in iTunes, you might consider ripping into a different format. Many audio geeks are not fond of mp3.

Just in case anyone has the same problem in the future, I downloaded a piece of trial software called Switch (http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html) which is free for 2 weeks but can also be purchased outright too.

Very easy to use but I had to leave my computer on overnight for the 600 odd songs to be converted, which is only to be expected. The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't keep the artist's details so the songs now belong to Unknown Artist, which is a bit of a pest but nothing major.

I’ve been having problems with Firefox. Yesterday it was running very slow and choppy, and today when I tried to click on the icon, Firefox wouldn’t open up. That blue circle icon keeps spinning around, but that’s about it. I click on the symbol, and nothing happens. Any suggestions?

First thing I would do is restart your computer and give it a clean slate to start with. Try opening Firefox after that. If it doesn't open up then, I would go uninstall Firefox and use IE to go download a fresh copy. You may need to reinstall your extensions but uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox is usually the easiest way to alleviate any issues with it.

That worked. Thanks, Ty.

During a recent bout of Mass Effect (digital version), the game unexpectedly froze at an impromptu loading screen, forcing me to hit "Quit Game" after bringing up the menu through the controller. After the incident, the system reboots, only to have trouble loading into the XMB menu (basically I'm stuck looking at my background image).

Does anyone here know the problem, and its remedy?

Additional:

1.) The red-light indicators on the Ps3 controller undergo some weird sequence of flashes.

2.) My system can go through the whole "check for corruption" scan just fine after the offhand shutdown, but I still encounter the problem described above.

3.) The system does not shut down on its own.

Question.

My son has a Minecraft account on an old computer( windows xp ). He also has a Mojave account. He wants to download something called Technik. We go through all the hoops but when it asks him to sign in it won't accept his account. I do not want to make a new account for I fear we will then lose his old one and we had to purchase Minecraft for him to play it.

Anyone here play/use Minecraft and/or Technik and would be able to maybe tell me what I am messing up? Thank you.

I don't even know what Technik is. Link me to their site?

Hard to say. I downloaded it in my virtual Windows XP, and logged in with my Minecraft account with no problems. It's currently installing stuff, not idea what, but it accepted my Minecraft account.

Since we are here...how would I change the wording in the link so that it was not the whole address? I have seen some posters include links with just a word describing it.
