The Joss Whedon Spam thread: Buffy, Angel, The Avengers (2012 flm) and more

Buffy weakest season for me was 5. The arrival of Dawn never really added much to the show save for involvement that series, but practically nothing significant from there on. Also, I know Glory was a God, but she was WEAK as a main antagonist for that series. Especially in the way she was eventually defeated, it almost felt like I was cheated but I never liked the character from the beginning besides that. I'll take Xander's admission and a hellbent apocalyptic Willow over that a thousand times.

Other than that, my least favourite series was 7. It had some good standalone episodes and the actual finale was good in itself but I think I mostly just disliked what I felt the characters had become, which was I suppose stained by all the battles and bad things they'd seen. It just made it difficult for me to remain endeared to the characters, even Giles for god's sake!

And Angel, I always think, just had the unfortunate burden of bad acting. I didn't rate Amy Acker (you call that a Texan accent??) apart from her run as Illyria or August Richards and I think their characters could have had much more depth and elaboration than they did, which would have been aided by better actors. On top of that I would never have removed Glenn Quinn from the cast, or at least not so soon. I wasn't sold on the reason they gave and I think he was the different character to separate the show from Buffy, compounded by him playing it great.

For my money Season 4 was the weakest, things like the circular episode where Angelus' awakening was played out without it actually happening just left me scratching my head for the most part.

Anyway, what were some of your favourite comedy moments or episodes anyone?

Buffy: "That's the basic plan. So. Am I crazy?"
Willow: "Well, crazy is such a strong word."
Giles: "Let's not rule it out though."
Buffy: "You don't think it can be done?"
Giles: "I didn't say that. I might, but not yet."

Cordelia: "I personally don't think it's possible to come up with a crazier plan."
Oz: "We attack the Mayor with hummus."
Cordelia: "I stand corrected."
Oz: "Just keeping things in perspective."
Cordelia: "Thank you."

And then, later on:

Angel: Well, he wasn't too crazy about germs.
Cordelia: Of course! That's it! We'll attack him with germs.
Buffy: Great! We'll get him cornered and then you can sneeze on him.
Cordelia: No! No. We'll get a container of Ebola virus and... and... or, it doesn't even have to be real. We can get a box that says Ebola on it and... um... chase him! (silence) With the box.
Xander: I'm starting to lean towards the Hummus Offensive.
Oz: They'll never see it coming.

Last episode of series 4 Buffy, all of it.

In series five of Angel shortly after Spike has his encounter with the ghoul known as Pavane who's trying to force him into hell in his place, Spike is in an elevator when it suddenly stops and the lights go down:

Spike: 'YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME TO HELL PAVANE!'

Fred: What?

Spike: Oh, uh, nothing.

Also, the episode where Giles is turned into a Fyarl demon by Ethan Rayne where he chases Proffessor Walsh down the street.

Spike was my favorite. All kinds of badassery. Funny that he was supposed to be killed off but was so popular he was kept around.

I recently tried to rewatch Buffy, I just can't get into it anymore. I don't know why, but it just didn't seem to hold up for me, it was a show I watched in HS & loved. Now I watch it & just think "eh...". Which is kinda the same feeling I have whenever I watch an episode of Dollhouse. Still have to give Angel a proper chance, hopefully when I get around to that I'll enjoy it as much as I enjoyed Firefly.

I had a brief period where this happened. Thankfully, it's over. And, please, let me know what your feelings are on Angel. I think you'll enjoy it.

Buffy > All other Whedon shows. There's a reason Angel was a spin-off of the show. When Buffy had Angel and Cordelia as regular cast members, that was Whedon at his absolute best IMO. Angel came very close, but Buffy was the original and I always seem to side with the original first and foremost, because Angel basically just used the exact same universe, characters, and themes that Buffy did with some new characters thrown in. Not to take anything away from Angel because Angel is my shit, but yeah, I've got to side with Buffy originally. The high school years were the shit, some of the best TV ever made.

I somehow have never seen Firefly though, so I guess you can take all that with a grain of salt. For some reason the show just doesn't look as appealing to me on surface level like Buffy and Angel did.

Once I'm done watching the rest of Oz again (on Season 4 now), I think I'll start the whole Buffy/Angel saga from the beginning again. It's been awhile.

Oh and we had a non-spam version of this thread in the Movies/TV section somewhere awhile back.

Took a peek at the seasons of Buffy on Netflix streaming last night...Seasons 1-6 in their entirety, but only the first two episodes of Season 7? WHAT THE FUCK. It's like Quantum Leap having first 3 episodes DVD only. :banghead:

I want the entire damn series!

Yeah, I've noticed that, too. It's getting kinda old....

does Angel (the series) ever really give a reason to care about Gunn? Like, -really- care? Hell, they made Cordelia from the Libby to one of my favorite Buffy/Angel characters.

Bout to start Season 3, for what it's worth

He's basically there just to be the muscle, mostly. Until Season Five. That's when his real character development takes place.

Angel cares about Gunn because he saw the destructive path he was leading and how many people he was going to take with him. It was Angel's job to intervene and save the kid and his followers. Plus, Gunn proved early on to be a valuable asset, so it only made sense for Angel and Wesley to start using him regularly.

And Season 3 is fantastic, Charlie. You're going to love it.

Finally started watching Angel. So whats up with Doyle, I know he's not in the other series do they kill him off??

Also is Firefly any good, I've heard it is yet it apparently got cancelled for some reason.

I don't wanna spoil the Doyle thing for you, so, all I will say is they wrote him out, and before he had a chance to come back on, Glenn Quinn sadly passed away.

Firefly is excellent, and the only reason it got cancelled was because Fox decided they didn't want to invest in the advertising it would take to gather a large following. It was, essentially, what Joss wanted when he said "I'd rather make a show a thousand people need to see, rather than a show a million people would like to see."

Nono, why should I care about Gunn? Other than George getting bitten, he hasn't done too much to gain like, sympathy or empathy or... homeopathy?

How far are you into Season 3, Charlie? I'm not going to spoil something major that's coming up that will make some people care for Gunn, through association.

Watching the last episode of Season 2 now, marveling at how well Joss created such a visually believable other dimension on the probably low budget he had

You didn't feel for him after what happened to his sister? Or the fact that he's a young man on his own in a hood that is being overrun with not just gangbangers but also vampires? And despite all that, he still manages to not only survive, but actually put up a fight and save the lives of many people.

His character was great, man.

Okay. That's almost understandable. It took me a season or two to warm up to the Gunn character. Just wait for Season 3-the final season. It'll give you plenty of reasons to care about Gunn. Actually, by the end of the series, I became a bigger fan of his than Wes and Connor together.

Still, nobody compares to Fred and Lorne/The Host.
