Steve Francis: Overrated or Underrated

Occasional Pre-Show
Steve Francis or Stevie Franchise was known for his killer crossovers and high-light real dunks. Some would almost forget that Francis was at one time considered a top 5 Point Gaurd in the league before he was traded to the Magic. And because of his downfall in Orlando alot of people would consider Francise overrated. As a Rocket fan I loved having Francis as a Rocket he was entertaining and a very solid player but at the same time I can get why some would consider him overrated but I fell he was sort of underrated in a way. So I will write a summary about his NBA carrer and decide whether or not I felt he was overrated or underrated.

Steve Francis was drafted 2nd overall by the Vancouver Grizzles in 1999 and traded to the Houston Rockets the same year before the season started. He shared the Rookie of the Year award with Elton Brand, was runner up in the 2000 slam dunk contest, and earned invitations to the 2002,2003, and 2004 NBA All-Star games. Francis averaged 19.3 points, 6.4 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.63 steals and helped lead the Rockets to the playoffs once during his first run with the Houston. In the off-season of 2004 Francis was traded to the Orlando Magic with Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato for Tracy McGrady, Tyronn Lue, Juwan Howard, and Reece Gaines. Francis was very upset with the trade but sort of got over it in the beginning of the season. Francis started off pretty hot with the Magic early during the 2004-2005 season, but cooled down and falling short of the playoffs. During Francis time with the Magic he averaged 18.75 points, 6.35 assists, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.25 steals . In February of 2006 The Magic traded a very unhappy Steve Francis to the New York Knicks where he put up some of the worst numbers of his carrer averging 11.5 points, 3.7 assists, 3.45 rebounds, and .95 steals. During the 2007 draft Francis was yet again traded, this time to the Portland TrailBlazers along with Channing Frye for Zach Randolph, Dan Dickau, and Fred Jones, who then bought out his contract thus making him an unrestricted free agent. Francis then returned to Houston signing a 2 year contract with the Rockets. However the return was short lived as Francis only played 10 games during the 2007-2008 season averging 5.5 points, 3 assists, 2.3 rebounds, and .9 steals, the worst stats in his NBA carrer. He was then once again traded for a final time to the team that ironically drafted him the Memphis Grizzles for a second round draft pick. Francis was then waived by the Grizzles in January of 2009 and is currently with no team at the moment. So far in his Francis's carrer he has averged 18.1 points, 6 assists, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals, is a 3 time All-Star, has only been in the playoffs once in his carrer. So what does everyone think was Francis overrated, underrated, fine as is?

Overall I look at Steve Francis's carrer I look at him as a Derrick Rose with the wrong mind-set, very good player and had alot of potential to be one of the best PG's today but had sort of a selfish attitude which really messed his carrer up. I would have really liked to see Francis and Yao grow together more and see if they could have been a good duo over the years and maybe make a run to the Finals. So I would say he's fine where he is, even though Francis only been to the playoffs once he did put up good numbers early in his carrer as Rocket, but the trade to Orlando and his attitude did really mess up his carrer.

Well I don't know what to say. He wasn't overrated because no one considered him to be a great player, but he wasn't underrated either because everyone was well aware that we was going to get to the hoop and you couldn't stop him. Maybe you could say he underused his talent.

Like you said he was a selfish dude. This may be because he didn't have the talent around him. He did peak in his career when Yao first came in. But the he had troubles with coaching and such. Never really reached what he was like in Houston over at Orlando or New York. When he reunited with the Rockets I was really excited. But they didn't play him. Which I think was a mistake seeing as at one point Alston was doing really shitty and Steve could of came in and play some minutes to let some of the load of Alstons shoulders.

But Like I said he was neither overrated nor underrated. People didn't think he was great (which is true) but people respected his game a whole lot.

I think Steve was as selfish as he was becuase Houston spoiled him alot. In a way he sort of saved the Rockets as far as keeping them relevant anyway, hence the reason they named him the Franchise and why not only Francis but the city of Houston was hurt by the trade. It also had alot to do with Jeff Van Gundy being the coach. When Rudy T was our coach he let Steve do whatever he wanted to do, when Van Gundy came he wanted Steve to change up his style and pass more which he didn't want to do.

He didn't get much playing time he's second run with Houston do to the fact that they had to find playing time for not only Alston and Francis but also for Mike James and a young Aaron Brooks. And like I said in my first post he got injured very early in the season thus causing him to miss a year and a half and getting traded.

No they didn't play him because he wasn't motivated enough. But thats because he didn't get enough minutes. He then eventually got a injury which forced him out. I am sure trying to develop Brooks wasn' the first thing they wanted with there point guard troubles. Don't forget Alston still was young enough to have another 4 or 5 years, while Mike James was never apart of there future anyways. So not playing Francis when Alston was doing shit was a mistake.

People have seemingly forgotten all about Francis in NBA circles so I can't say he was overrated but he sure as fuck wasn't underrated. When he had his first run in Houston he was a great player and one of the best point guards in the league because his game was perfect for Houston's high tempo offense. Once Jeff Van Gundy came in, Francis refused to change his style and that's why he got traded.

When he first got to Orlando he returned back to his old form and the Magic were doing great. Then they trade away one of his best friends in Cuttino Mobley and he became disgruntled. He started playing worse and the Magic as a team started playing worse. He then ends up in New York but he was never able to stay healthy enough to find a rhythm there.

In his return to Houston he had a chance but he wasn't fitting in well with Rick Adelman's offense so he didn't get much playing time. Then after just 10 games he had season ending surgery which ended up turning into career ending at least for now.

Francis had all the talent in the world but he refused to adapt to different systems and basically threw a hissy fit when things didn't go his way. Let's also not forget he only made one trip to the playoffs and the Rockets were knocked out in the first round. Fun player to watch, but his attitude fucked him over.

Bascially what Francis was where a very talented and All-Star caliber player, but you had no chance of winning with him. Kind of like Marbury in that respect, which made it all the more puzzling when the Knicks brought them both in.

As far as overrated or underrated goes, I don't know. How do people rate him? I'm assume too highly, so I'll say overrated.

I fucking love Steve Francis, I thought everybody had forgot about him by now. Is he overrated? No, I don't think so, no one I've ever met has ever thought to much of him. Is he underrated? No, I don't think he is underrated either, he was an All Star caliber guy who never really fit in/conformed with a team, like GD said you really had no chance of winning with the guy. I think that as a whole, most people think of Steve Francis just the way they should, a great player, but not a great team player.
