Greatest Athlete of All Time

Really I don't think this question truely can have 1 definate answer to be honest..

We're all different people of different places. Some grew up watching Hockey, others it was Football/Soccer, and others basketball. So everyone is going to have "Their Guy".

Gretzky did for his sport, what Jordan did for his. Inspired kids for many generations to come. That's it, that's all. When you put their accomplishments aside, that's what it comes down to. Those guys drove kids to have interest in their sports. If you take this poll in any country, the results are always going to be different. Sometimes Gretzky will win, other times Jordan will. Hell, a few years ago Tiger might have won also.

The fact that the NXT NWS Mod thread on this subject has yet to mention anyone from out side North America and focusses solely on team sports like basketball, baseball and hockey is mindboggling

1. Muhammad Ali wasn't a team sports athlete.
2. It's not surprising. You ask someone from North America who the best athlete is, they're gonna take someone they know about. I doubt they know enough about guys from foreign continents.

He isn't the greatest boxer of all time either.
Never said he was. Someone mentioned him in the thread though.

GOD FORBID SOMEONE DIDN'T PICK A SOCCER PLAYER.

Jordan won Olympic Gold competing against the world.
Jim Thorpe won Olympic gold too (in the Pentathlon and decathlon, a total of 15 events he did better then worldly competition). Of the 15 events, he won 8, and finished top 4 in all 15, easily winning 2 golds in the 1912 Summer Games.

And he was a professional football, baseball, and basketball player.

I had the same thought. But I am mentioning boxing which is not a US dominant sport and yet it is the only one to be a mainstream sport outside the US.

My other considerations were Federer or Schumacher. I feel I am justified in my pick but I thought long and hard about it.

Kinda surprised Tiger wasn't mentioned. For most of the '00s he dominated golf. Or was he mentioned? I don't remember.

Put Gretzky and Jordan in a competition that doesn't involve Basketball or Hockey. I've got my money on Jordan to win EVERY SINGLE EVENT, proof in itself Jordan was a better athlete than Gretzky.

So because you say so it's proof?

Pretty sure Wayne didn't quit on his sport in his prime like Jordan did to try and do something that he really didn't have any business doing.

And, y'know, Wayne has his number retired by EVERYONE in the NHL. And his trade to LA sparked a popularity in the US and resulted in 9 more teams being added, with only 1 of them being located in Canada.

Gretzky is nothing without Hockey. I can't say the same for Jordan.

As I said, take both of their top sports away and put them in an athletic competition. Jordan is by far the superior athlete to Gretzky, in every sense of the word "athlete". We can argue hockey stats to basketball stats and run the same debate in circles talking about nothing but stats, but the second we take Hockey out of the equation Gretzky no longer has an argument.

Lol, the Murder of Jordan's Dad led him to play Baseball. This is the first time I've ever heard someone say Jordan "quit" on basketball. Jordan is a grown man and like other grown men gets to choose what he wants to do. It has nothing to do "quitting"

Jordan helped launch Basketball to being the number 2 most recognizable sport in the world, hockey doesn't even crack the top 5 in the united states.

I would like to see these figures.. But without Steve Nash, not a lot of people here care about basketball either. Even Baseball is more recognizable then Basketball here.

Totally false. How would Jordan do against Gretzky in a long distance run? A tennis match? In a soccer game? It's your opinion he would do better in other sports, why? Cause he's bigger? Can jump higher? It's all relative to the sport they're playing, Gretzky would have the advantage in some and vice-versa.

You keep bringing this up and again it fails to be relevant.

LOL, go make a case against Jordan in the actual thread if you want me to break it down an shit all over you.

I'll take Jordan in any athletic competition over Gretzky, other than Hockey.

Gretzky being nothing without Hockey is not a false statement, it's the absolute truth.
