Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

You're like the Vince McMahon of Stoke.

I won't be seeing Starred Up today but having realised that it was still on (somehow) has reignited my interest. Soon. Probably.

So very, very violent. Maybe it's time blurring my memories but I don't remember the first being as violent. Weirdly cathartic if you're recovering from a migraine.

Wish I hadn't fallen asleep now. So much violence missed.

I'm seeing The Other Woman later. It has Nicki Minaj in it. I like hot chocolate and woman who've had lots of surgery. It's my current phase.

Pompeii is terrible. Just an awful, awful film. Had me in hysterics and was an absolute hoot.

Noah's rating just exposes my love for Aronofsky films. Under The Skin could just have easily been given ★. The Other Woman has long since being forgotten. It does have that chesty blonde lass in it though. I forget her name.

5 starts for Noah? I love an Aronofksy film as much as the next guy that loves an Aronofsky film, but 5 stars?

Five stars for how much I enjoyed it. Yeah, you tell me I'm wrong!

If I'm doing a list on which films are actually the best, then why would mine look like that?

This isn't a question worth starting a new thread over, but Pacific Rim looks like it was completely over-dubbed. I'm only 30 minutes or so in but did anyone else notice this?

The fights were good, the rest was a bit of a chore to get through.

Watched The Longest Yard afterwards and no matter the hate that Sandler gets, its still an enjoyable film.

Was that the weird American comedy version of Mean Machine?

I like Sandler in Reign Over Me... And 50 First Dates.

Edit: Mean Machine was a remake of 1974s longest yard.

Yeah, Mean Machine is the weird one in that selection of films. Anybody else remember when Vinnie Jones was an interesting actor?

And it's ok to like the Sandler film. We all enjoy seeing wrestlers in mainsteam films.

Jake, having seen both recently myself, might I ask you to elaborate a bit on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier? I'd have had them in opposite places, personally.

My list is based purely on my enjoyment of each film. Captain America is superior, I can see that, I just found it incredibly dull. There's nothing more for me to learn from those Marvel films, that's what 3 (4 if you count Thor 2) films featuring Captain America will do to me. Also the villains were crap. And villains are the main appeal of a new superhero film.

Spider-Man was enjoyable. That's about as much praise I can give it.

There's quite a bit between how I felt about Bad Neighbours with three stars and A Long Way Down with three stars for example. I just don't like that scoring system where people give 1/2, 1/3, quarters on top of star ratings. If you're doing that you may as well rate them in percentages. If I did that Spider-Man & Captain America wouldn't get very high ones.

I really thought everything EXCEPT the winter soldier stuff was pretty cool, though more like an extended episode of Agents of SHIELD. I would have been happier watching Cap beat up some more jobbers and had another few rounds with GSP and Grillo. Not sure why they straightened Black Widows hair though, that damn near ruined the whole thing for me.

I'd have a hard time saying the villians were any better in Spider-Man (electro should have never made a damn electricity pun, his character up to that point was mildly interesting), but at least they had the sub-plot of "Why is Gwen Stacy going out with an asshole?".

Gotcha. All fair and understandable. Just curious. I agree with the ratings, I'd just have had them flip-flopped, and for very much the same reasons. Spidey bored me when shit wasn't going down, and neither Electro nor the Goblin gave me reason to really care about them. Conversely, The Winter Soldier's past with Cap and the intrigue of the Hydra mole made them interesting villains to me. I thought maybe there was something about the new Spidey that you saw that might make me reconsider. Fine summer fare both, but neither are the best of the genre.

I haven't followed Agents of SHIELD too closely, but I hear you. They were going for a sort of a spy film thing, and for the most part I think they succeeded. It worked for and against the movie though, if that makes any sense. And I agree, another throwdown between Cap and GSP would've been more than welcome.

"I will have you know there is no one in the superhero fight game that appreciates the value of showmanship more than Monsieur Boucher here. But one must not forget the most important thing in the superhero fight game. And that is a villain that can win fights. Now that should be your first, second, third, fourth, and fifth concern."

I might have talked about how Tom Hardy had quite a convincing Welsh accent, and that Locke is well written, albeit for something that feels like a novelty drama the BBC would throw on for a Thursday night. I might have talked about how Frank has two genuine laughs in it and a genuinely poignant ending. Instead I'm going to talk about how The Wind Rises is devoid of anything that could be considered a component of a compelling story. The film has two strands: designing planes and a relationship the protagonist has with some bird. Planes are alright, I guess. That's the 'interesting' strand. Can't believe the guy who made Princess Mononoke - a masterpiece - is going to sign off with this fucking sleeping aid. Two hours that feels like four.
