Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

My 5 star films aren't 5 star films. They were just initial enjoyment ratings. I'm just too lazy to redo the list. It'd mean moving Her, Nymphomaniac 1 & 2, The Grand Budapest Hotel up and above Pompeii and Delivery Man. And I just don't feel like doing it.

The Guest tonight, Sex Tape, Before I Go To Sleep and that Helen Mirren film tomorrow.

Also got Let's Be Cops & If I stay to the list. Spoiler: They don't chart high.

Earth-shattering revelations aside, I saw a new film today. A French one. They said "merci" and everything.

The film repeats itself - lines of dialogue and entire scenes. It's not all bad - and the protagonist is, sadly, quite relatable - and one could even describe it as clever, though I'd describe it as tedious.

The Raid 2, Calvary, Noah, Starred Up, The Double and - of course - Mike Bassett: England Manager are in the post. The list could be about to change.

Oh and Tony Jaa is in the next film too so that could be amazing.

Rama vs Tony Jaa? I just cant express how happy this will make me. That fight is going to be fucking amazing.

I am glad someone else felt the same way I did about the knife scene between The Assassin and Rama. That was intense & very well done.

As far as my favourite Gareths go, it's Wright first, then Evans, then Gareth from The Office, then Edwards miles behind.

Where does Blackstock fit in on your list? Surely he warrants a spot above Edwards.

The reason nobody has given TWOWS 5 stars is because it isn't a 5 star film. Unlike The Guest, which is definately a 5 star film....

That was a deeply pleasurable experience. It's like Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett just sit in a room and go, "What is it, do you think, that Sam would like to see?" Just goes to show: eighties synth can be used to communicate every kind of atmosphere. Dan Stevens is such a smoldering on-screen presence, I can only compare The Guest to sexual assault - and I love it.

What do you guys think of Sin City? JGlass recommended it to me a number of years ago, and the time has come.

Am I in for something good?

Jake, having seen the second one, can give you a fuller answer.

You'll really enjoy it if, like most people who've reviewed it, you've never seen a noir before. But nah, it's pretty alright.

Once you've seen the first one there's no reason to see the 2nd. Same story 6 times over is just too much. The sequel is also cheap.

But yeah, the first is enjoyable enough.

Watching The Losers just now and Chris Evans as Jensen is one of the best pieces of casting in any comic book film.

Also, this is a horrifically under-rated movie.

It's a fun film that doesn't get too bogged down in being 'dark' or 'gritty' and embraces the silliness and humour of the comic, which came out around the time of too many other films that were deemed dark and/or gritty.

It didn't conform to the current trend and had fun while doing so. Every now and then you need films that are silly for the sake of being silly and this is one of those.

The comic is better but its definitely a Film4/ITV4 film at 11.00 on a Thursday kind of film unfortunately/unfairly.

Did you know?: Chris Evans was in Marilyn Manson's video for Tainted Love?
