Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

I don't have an HD TV but it was cheaper getting it on DVD than normal DVD.

What was it?

I didn't really appreciate it the first time I saw it on DVD, nor am I sure I totally get the big fuss around it, but Blade Runner on blu ray is a mighty fine sight.

Didn't know where to put Evil Dead & Olympus Has Fallen. The two blandest films I've seen in, well, weeks. If Evil Dead had gone silly at the points when it should've gone silly, it would've been almost good. The only thing that surprised me about Olympus Has Fallen was the massive body count, the blood and the swearing. Very graphic for a 12 I thought. That was until I saw it was 15 on the poster.

My local cinema is doing Monday screenings of stuff like Trainspotting, The Evil Dead and A Clockwork Orange. Could be a good way of getting some ★★★★★ films on the list. Unless Iron Man 3 surprises me on Thursday.

I heard that Olympus Has Fallen has the line, "Let's the play the fuck off game - you go first." Is this true? If so, is it worth seeing for that one line?

I don't remember. I don't remember a single thing about it!

Man Of Steel looks decent. I hope it flops hard though. I could do without a Justice League film and I'd prefer more Batman films. I also don't want Zack Snyder to get anymore work.

Watchmen's half decent, otherwise Snyder is a pretty appalling director. Nolan's name being attached will help Man of Steel do better than it otherwise would. I'd be shocked if it did anywhere near Avengers' numbers.

Thinking of seeing Oblivion? Don't!

I'd be more excited about Iron Man 3 if it wasn't the fourth film to feature Iron Man in 5 years. That's some Twilight/Harry Potter excessiveness right there.

Thor looks good. But, y'know, it's the third film to feature Thor in two and a half years.

Iron Man 3 is long. Looong. The rest of my opinion is still forming. I can say this: I genuinely thought Jon Favreau was wearing a comedy fatsuit. Turns out he wasn't. Oh dear.

Not seen the Thor trailer yet - it wasn't attached to my screening of Iron Man like I thought it would be. The cheek!

The fact that Thor: The Dark World has bits shot in places I recognise (just around the corner from the cinema I frequent, in fact) makes it feel... low budget. Yeah, I just watched the trailer.

Wouldn't have taken much for Evil Dead to be a fun movie.

It was. In small chunks.

Army of Darkness is somehow less fun than Evil Dead II. I'm up for Evil Dead V: Army of Darkness II though.

I'm completely in two minds about Iron Man Three, but most of the things I'd have to say about it would be spoilers. I think, just like the other two, it falls apart in the third act. Still, there's a lot to like in there, so it goes right to the top of the three star tier.

ACTUAL, REAL, GENUINE SPOILERS FOR IRON MAN THREE - I'M THE ONLY ONE ALLOWED TO BE A DOPY CUNT IN THIS THREAD:

Ben Kingsley's Mandarin is revealed to be a character portrayed by a stage actor named Trevor, employed by the real villain. Kingsley is very funny as Trevor, and it's a good reveal, but unfortunately the real villain is... Guy Pearce in a suit. As opposed to Sam Rockwell in a suit. As opposed to Jeff Bridges in a suit. Is it so hard to have an Iron Man foil who isn't a fucking corporate rival? Not exactly riveting. The film takes a nice amount of left turns from the previous two films, but villainy sure as shit isn't where it does them.

Also, there's a precocious young boy, but it's subverted enough not to be totally grating.
