Sam, Coco, Barbosa, NorCal, and J-Glass discuss esoteric shows

If you think Mance Rayder is a villain, you haven't been paying attention...

To be fair, the show has done a shit job of fleshing him out. He was on screen for a total of about 20 minutes two years ago

True, but there is still enough to see that he is no villain. Certainly not the villain that the Night's Watch would like to paint him as.

It would be like viewing the tribes who crossed into the Roman Empire as "villains."

To steal a terrible line from a poor film said in an awful Norn Iron accent, "there's always a bigger fish..."

Which version? ;)

I got through the first season, liked bits here and there but only got through 2 episodes of the second season. Apparently Coven is meant to be quite good though.

That version, of course. ;) I'm still at episode 5.

Tough to argue that wasnt the best GOT season of them all.

Just when I was ready to give up on the show.....things actually happened. Storylines actually progressed. Unthinkable given the glacial pace of the last two seasons

Great finale.

Jon Snow entering Wildling territory was intense as hell and Stannis showing up and taking over was an awesome turn of events. Never saw that coming.

Finally, and boy do I mean FINALLY, Bran's story-arc has become interesting. It's taken fucking forever, but at least we're here now. I can actually say I'm looking forward to seeing where his story is heading. Never thought I'd see the day.

Am I a douche for feeling bad for the dragons? I wish Daenerys could tame them like the Starks did their wolves. That was an great scene though.

The Brienne/Hound fight was spectacular. I usually hate the "Women is as tough as men" BS that shows/movies today love to spew out, but how can you bitch about the outcome when the fight was as good as that was?

And of course... Tyrion/Tywin was incredible.

My only gripe is no Ramsey/Theron in the finale. Hopefully they have a huge role next season because this past season we didn't get nearly enough of those guys.

Overall, this season had a couple of my least favorite episodes in the series. I just figured since it was only 10 episodes and it got so much hype from book readers that the season was going to be on full throttle from start to finish. But there were 2 or 3 throwaway episodes and it was just extremely disappointing.

However, the rest of the season was fantastic and up there with GoT's best work, so overall my complaints remain at a minimum. The show is still top 2 favorite currently on television for me and I can't wait for next season.

Also I feel a responsibility to inform Sam that the second season of Vikings was vastly superior to the first

Yeah, but watching it means either buying Amazon Instant (which, even at £80 a year, doesn't seem that great an investment) or pirating it (and that's just slightly more effort than I want to go to for that show).

You are very, very luck that HBO and co deviated from the books on the Bran saga. If you think the show was dull, the book might actually have caused you physical pain.

In the book, Bran's company do not go near Craster's Keep (neither did the Night's Watch after the mutiny) and instead spend what seems like forever wandering about in the snow. No Bran-Hodor fighting wights. Jojen lingering on the edge of death (for no real reason other than he is frail) forever. When compared to the books, the show is well ahead of schedule in introducing the Children of the Forest and the Three Eyed Raven.

The Brienne/Hound fight was spectacular. I usually hate the "Women is as tough as men" BS that shows/movies today love to spew out, but how can you bitch about the outcome when the fight was as good as that was?

Doesn't appear in the books. Indeed, they never meet. Both have massive fights in the books around this time - the Hound and Arya against members of Ser Gregor's raiders, in which the Hound is seriously injured and Arya leaves him to die in a similar manner to the show; Brienne's might appear in the show at a later time so I will not elaborate but she does not find out that the Hound had been riding with Arya until way later.

It was a great fight though and a good way to bring things together better. Much like with Sam and the White Walker, and Brienne herself with Jaime, will anyone really believe that Brienne of Tarth defeated Sandor Clegane?

The other major addition that the show makes in season 4 is the reveal of the White Walkers do with the babies offered to them by Craster and that they have a leader. It had long been suspected that that was what happened but not as yet confirmed in the books, mainly because there is no POV character that gets to see such things.

My only gripe is no Ramsey/Theron in the finale. Hopefully they have a huge role next season because this past season we didn't get nearly enough of those guys.

I suppose there could have been something revealed about where Roose and Ramsay were going after their last scene together, but I thought that the legitimising of Ramsay was a decent way to end the season for them.

In other news, actual world news in fact, can anyone hear about the new mess in Iraq without think about this guy...

I chuckle to myself every time I hear them discussing the situation. They really should have researched a bit more before choosing an acronym.

Sam, have you gotten round to that second season of Vikings? Or do you need hurt?

Lots of Dornish royalty got casted for this season of GOT. Fuckin' A.

JMT...

apparently taylor kitsch is pretty much a lock to play one of the protagonists for season 2 or true fuckin detective. Holy shit.

Yeah man, I read yesterday it could be him and Colin Farrell. I'll be so stoked if it's true about Kitsch. His career has been horribly mistreated since FNL ended. This will be the break he needs and the World will see what this guy can bring to the table.

Other than that I haven't been watching much TV lately. I got into Supernatural a few months ago... fucking loved it. Definitely give that a shot sometime, man. I think it'll be right up your ally, especially when the show makes the turn from horror to the biblical stuff.

Speaking of "biblical," the one show I am watching right now is The Leftovers on HBO. I would not recommend it. It's had a couple of good episodes, a couple of really bad ones, but I'm sticking with it out of pure curiosity to see where the fuck they're heading. I'm pretty positive though I'm going to hate the result.

Supernatural kicks ass.

Once Castiel (& later Crowley) show up, the series does turn into a bit of a different animal of sorts. Much better than just your average 'monster hunting' show.

Yea, I considered it, but it didnt feel to me like it would be handled in the right way.

I saw the tail end of a commercial for a new starz show called "Outlander" that seems like it might be a little bit my style. I have to research it a bit.

EDIT: Never mind. Not what I thought it was. May still be worth checking out, but not what I thought.

and while I think Colin Farrell will do awesome in a role in TD2, I can never forgive him for what happened in Alexander.

I've seen every episode of Supernatural. It's well worth watching, especially the recaps that open the season finales, always set to Carry On My Wayward Son.

Why the fuck, in the promo for Gotham, would they reveal directly who is who as far as the origin stories? Isn't that supposed to be part of the fun of the show, picking up on the subtleties and the development of the characters?

Its all seemed just as stupid as Agents of Shield since the beginning anyways.

In other news, True Blood appears to be going out with quite the whimper.
