WWE Raw Supershow - January 30, 2012

Opening Segment - Good, strong segment to start things off. Big Johnny coming out smiling and shaking hands with everyone had a good feel to it in that he did seem to be sucking up a little to everyone. His confidence at the beginning of things set things up nicely for Punk to come out. Punk insulted him for a bit while JL continued to smile, though you could sense under the surface that he was dying to lash out at Punk. Daniel Bryan coming out was a nice surprise and he continues to do a great job with this slow heel turn. He had some nice interaction with Punk and I like that they didn't try to overdo it. After all, these two are close and it's logical for there to be some tension between their characters when you consider how highly both men hold themselves as far as being "the best wrestler in the world". Bryan drew some really good heat, especially after referring to himself as a role model. A heel calling himself a role model is a great way to generate heat. The champ vs. champ match that JL set up had me very excited, especially when Punk & Bryan agreed to basically tear the house down. Thumbs Up

1. Randy Orton vs. Dolph Ziggler - Another very good outing between these two. This was Orton's first match back and, if anything, he seemed very refreshed in my eyes. He just looked as if he not only hadn't lost a step but had actually gained a couple. They delivered some great action with some believable near falls scattered throughout the match. The match was a little over 11 minutes long, but it felt longer than that, and I mean that in a good way. Orton does eventually win after hitting the RKO. It would've been nice to see Ziggler go over here but I wasn't expecting it to happen. Orton simply isn't going to lose in his first match back. Ziggler still looked strong in defeat and I think we'll ultimately see Ziggler take the next big step forward come WrestleMania. ***1/4

Big Johnny Backstage - They showed a brief exchange with Johnny Ace backstage with a few people, including William Regal. Regal's comment about having conjoined twins in the fifth grade was hilarious, just classic Regal sense of humor, all while Big Johnny just kept smiling and said that was a tough year. I'm enjoying JL's antics thus far. Thumbs Up

2. Brodus Clay vs. Tyler Reks - More of the same with Clay getting the win in about a minute. Clay continues to get a great response from live crowds and I have to say that I'm enjoying Clay. He looks as though he's having a great time out there and he's really thrown himself into things. N/A

3. CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan - This match was just plain phenomenal and delivered in every way it was intended. Punk & Bryan looked brilliant during this match and it delivered fantastic back and forth action. The crowd was very hot for this match and both men just looked like stars. Neither guy came out looking weak and this match really left me wanting to see more, which I think was a goal of the match itself. The match ends in a DQ win for Bryan a little past the 15 minute mark after Chris Jericho comes down to ringside. As Bryan lies under the ring ropes recovering from a big kick from Punk, Jericho grabs him and tosses him hard into the security barrier. He then climbs into the ring and nails Punk with the Codebreaker. Since Jericho attacked Bryan first, Punk got DQ'd. Bryan smiled broadly afterword, screaming "Yes!!" and celebrated his victory over Punk. This was also a good way to start things off between Jericho & Punk. It was simple and it left no doubt as to Jericho's intentions. I'd love to see Punk & Bryan have a full blown feud somewhere down the line, especially if it led to matches like this. I didn't mind the ending at all as a pinfall or submission loss would've lowered the stock of either guy to some degree. Neither of them looked weak and, as I said, it just left us wanting to see more from these two. ****

4. Kofi Kingston vs. The Miz - Prior to the match, R-Truth comes out on guest commentary and hearing some of his interactions with Cole was funny. As for the match itself, it was a good, solid match with a somewhat surprise ending. Miz & Kofi packed a good deal of action into the 5 minute match, which helped make the match feel longer. These are two men that will be in the Raw EC match at the EC ppv, so I'm hoping we'll see another match on next week's Raw between two more EC competitors. Kofi hits Trouble in Paradise to score the win, which surprised me a little as I think this is the first time I've seen Kofi beat Miz. I'm also glad that they didn't have R-Truth interfere in the match. It wasn't necessary and it gave Kofi some nice momentum. **1/2

The Rock Video Package - They showed this at the Rumble event, but I enjoyed it more last night. It was a long video package and it can be annoying seeing those on a ppv. It was a different look at The Rock, a much more candid & behind the scenes sort of mini documentary that featured The Rock on the set of some of his movies, brief interviews with some people Rock has worked with on these movies, clips of The Rock while he was wrestling, etc. Just a nicely put together package all in all. Thumbs Up

5. Beth Phoenix vs. Eve Torres for the WWE Divas Championship - Please, just disban the Divas Vince and be done with it. This match lasted less than 1 minute, which just goes to show relevant Vince feels the Divas are. N/A

John Cena & Kane - After the match, Kane appears on the screen and threatens Eve and eventually pops up behind her. As he climbs into the ring, she sells her fear of Kane well. Cena's music hits and he runs to the ring where he & Kane get into a good brawl segment. I liked the story the brawl showed as well with Cena looking as though he was starting to embrace the hate. Cena was smiling wickedly as he repeatedly hit Kane with the ring steps. It fit in perfeclty with Kane's earlier comments about how Cena couldn't beat him and couldn't beat The Rock if he didn't embrace the hate. As Cena was beating Kane, he was getting a huge positive response from the live crowd. I couldn't hear any boos, just loud cheers as Cena unleashed this new darker side on Kane. Kane eventually runs off through the crowd while Cena poses a bit inside the ring. A nice glimpse of Cena moving forward and it makes me very interested to see how Cena ultimately turns out. Thumbs Up

Triple H, Big Johnny and The Undertaker - Johnny Ace came out with something of a worried look on his face. I enjoy that the WWE showed JL looking less and less confident in his ability to retain his job as the night went on. It was logical that someone be nervous as something like this creeps closer, so it worked out nicely. Triple H came out to a nice response and he had some good interaction with JL. I laughed my ass off when Trips mentioned the Kiss My Ass club and watching Big Johnny apply chapstick to his lips only made it funnier. Triple H's comment of, "You're really going to do it, aren't you, you freak?" got a great response from the crowd after JL dropped to his knees. Eventually, Triple H gets around to telling JL that he's about to be future endeavored when we hear that ominous gong. The Undertaker made his return last night to a huge pop from the live crowd. JL slithered out at some point and having Taker pop up is a good way of making sure that Trips had to avoide firing JL. As they did last year, Trips & Taker didn't say a word to each other and they didn't have to. They said more without saying anything than most wrestlers could if you gave them a half hour promo segment. I'm glad that they didn't do an exact repeat of last year's scenario. Taker looked as though he was challenging Trips to another match at WM, which is unusual as Taker has always been the guy that's been pursued. Triple H patting Taker on the shoulder and leaving left people wanting more as it looked as though Trips was declining Taker's challenge, so we'll have to wait and see how Taker forces Trips to accept. Overall, a great segment to close things off. Thumbs Up

Final Thoughts - Last night's Raw was about as damn near perfect as a show can get. Aside from the Diva match, Raw just delivered in every reasonable & measurable way. The two main promo segments were very good with Bryan & Punk having good interaction with each other. The closing promo segment delivered in a big way. It delivered some laughs and great storytelling with Taker's hot return. Wrestling action on the show was overall awesome. Orton & Ziggler put on another great match. Kofi & Miz put on a very solid match that had a surprise ending with Kofi scoring the clean win over Miz. CM Punk vs. Daniel Bryan was a phenomenal back and forth outing that made both men look like mega stars. It left us wanting more and I hope & pray that we get more from these two at some point down the line. I have little doubt that this match will be thought of as one of the best WWE matches of 2012. Having Jericho come out and attack Punk was a simple, logical way of letting people know Jericho's intentions and it cost Punk a win against the reigning WHC. Brodus Clay's match was nothing, but he was still entertaining doing his thing. The Cena & Kane segment was also very well done in my view and it's nice to see that they've started Cena down the road of truly embracing his hate. The EC ppv also got some good hype & build from the get go with the Raw EC match being announced with Cole & Lawler hyping the event throughout the night. All in all, just a fantastic show that'll probably be one of the best episodes of any wrestling program in 2012.

Grade: A

Amazing Raw! Left me wanting more from next weeks raw then the rumble did for last night! The Taker/HHH bit was outstanding! We can complain that we dont want to see that match again but you have to admit that last nights segment much like the one a year ago is truly powerful and has alot of tension! Just amazing.

Finally Jericho gets involved with Punk!..
And Cena (cant believe im saying this) was awesome last night with that brawl with Kane, haven't seen a WWE Brawl like that in literally years. That is just 3 segments that leave you on the edge for next week. Great job WWE, the feeling from last nights Raw is what was expected for the Royal Rumble the previous night I believe.

Hammer, the only thing I can say in defense of the Diva's match last night was that it was obvious that Eve was intended to look distracted. It was a shit non-match, but it was designed to show just how emotionally distraught Eve is over Zack Ryder's injuries and the psychological effect Kane is having, not to have a legit divas match. It was just part of the Kane/Cena/Ryder angle, nothing more.

Aside from being an overall tremendous show in terms of quality, last night's Raw also saw a huge surge in numbers.

Last night's Raw drew a 3.55 Nielsen rating with an average viewership of 5,221,000, which is up 13% compared to last week's episode. It's the first time Raw has cracked 5 million viewers since the 10-10-11 episode and the most overall viewers since the 5-13-11 episode, which was the first Raw after Macho Man Randy Savage's death.

The first hour of the show drew 5,218,000 viewers while the second hour slipped to 5,124,000, which still makes it the largest second hour of Raw viewership since 7-25-11. Raw's second hour went head to head with the two half hour episodes of Pawn Starns and it looks as though the last 30-45 minutes of Raw may have cut into Pawn Stars. The 10pm episode of PS drew 7,120,000 viewers while the 10:30pm episode dropped to 6,810,000, which is still a helluva healthy number but it's the first time I can recall the 10:30 episode dropping by such a degree. It wouldn't surprise me if several hundred thousand people were flipping the channel back and forth between the 10:30 PS and the same time period for Raw.

Overall, a helluva good performance from Raw and it looks as if a lot of more casual viewers tuned into last night's show as they were expecting major fall out from the Royal Rumble.

Any segment breakdown numbers? I really hope the Punk/Bryan match did well.

Opening Segment - Good, strong segment to start things off. Big Johnny coming out smiling and shaking hands with everyone had a good feel to it in that he did seem to be sucking up a little to everyone. His confidence at the beginning of things set things up nicely for Punk to come out. No thoughts on Sheamus? His mic work is very basic and I don't expect we'll ever get any classic promos out of him, but I thought he got his jolly Irishman shtick over well last night.

Fuckin awesome Raw.
Opening segment was really cool as a guy who has followed Punk since "when hero met punk" in IWA-MS and Daniel Bryan Danielson since his match at like the 2nd ROH show against AJ Styles. I like that Punk is rubbing it in Bryan's face with the whole "best in the world" stuff. Sheamus on the mic is very good. He's basic, but that's his character. It'd be ******ed if he wasn't basic. He's going to say some Irish shit, then club your face in, that's why people like him. I think Ace did a great job (and has done a great job) at being the epitome of a corporate kiss ass.

Orton vs Ziggler-pretty great match as usual from these two. Also as usual, no wasted motion from Orton, everything is in character. As usual from Ziggler, he sells big on everything like HBK used to.

Ace backstage again owning his character.

Good ol fashion squash with the funkasaurus. Those of you who want WWE to go back to 1987 with year long feuds, imagine the whole show full of these and then the Kofi/Miz match as the main event...yea. The squash is fun and more building up Brodus who is AMAZING with his character. Love that he's not another 'GRRR I R A MONSTA" big man but something people will actually remember.

Punk vs Bryan holy shit. As an old ROH mark, this was great. Bryan looked vicious with his torture spots. The crowd reacted exactly as they should have, lots of CM Punk chants and booing DB. Just as the match was REALLY getting good, they cut it off with Jericho, which is exactly what they should have done. You want to tease the audience, not blow your wad the first time, that's what virgins do. This sets up Jericho/Punk, builds DBs character, and made both guys look great. Early candidate for TV match of the year.

Kingston/Miz, kinda of a standard Miz promo to start, which makes me sad. This isn't Miz's fault, he's still putting every bit of character into it, the writers just sucked tonight for him. Troof was awesome on commentary. Pretty solid match as you'd expect from two pros. I don't think many people appreciate how amazing the modern TV wrestling show really is as far as in ring quality. 10 years ago you'd have punch/kick/eye gouge, run in, 20 years ago you'd have stomp.....elbow.....pin attempt.....body slam...... The combination of selling, storytelling, and action that the performers they have now have is remarkable. Not just saying this match, but in general, Raw really showed that. I like that this continues Miz/Truth and I honestly want them to get the Wrestlemania blood feud match for Raw. I can see them tearing the house down because both guys work the crowd so well on the mic and in the ring.

Rock video package starts out cool but then turns into a half assed plug for his most recent movie, but then he reminds everyone that he still loves wrestling and he visits his Gpas grave. Cool story bro, someone once asked me if I'd ever cheat on my girlfriend, I said "no, I love her".

Phoenix vs Torres, this is more of an angle. Eve isn't mentally there because of Kane, Phoenix is at her peak (this is going to make her mania match a bigger deal, like when a pitcher goes 5-0 in September and then starts game 1 in the playoffs, there is more expectation than if he was mediocre). So a squash and an angle here is great. LOVED Cena's intensity here. Kinda felt like even the people who boo him sort of went "Cena sucks cena.....okay dude, that's awesome". Course then Cena, being the master he is, STILL got in a corny line because he didn't hear as many boos so he stuck it to those fans again to try to rile them up some more. Great segment and I'm excited to see some sort of brawling match at EC.

Final segment was really good too. Comedy was good wrestling comedy, which is like Adam Sandlerish I'd say. Triple H can basically do whatever and it gets fairly over. Ace again OWNS his character. Undertaker comes out and it pisses me off that they're going to have a rematch. At mania, you'll have more eyes watching your show than at any other time in the year. What better way to make people think Ziggler or Rhodes is a big deal than to have them go toe to toe with the legend? O well, they at least throw a wrinkle in it by having HHH walk off, so maybe it won't be HHH vs Taker.

Overall a REALLY awesome show. I can't fathom any fan of wrestling or entertainment in general disliking it. My girlfriend, who's been watching for about a year now even said, during the Punk/Dragon match "these are two really good matches in a row". When you can get two people, one (me) a fan for almost 20 years and someone who has a brief history in the business, and a new fan who knows literally nothing about it, to say "wow, this is good" you've pretty much covered your bases.

First off thanks to guys like Jackhammer who did do a rating on the match in the Raw aftermatch thread..

But... as the "IWC", no one would have thought that one day the WWE Champion would be CM Punk would go one on one with Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson) who at the same time would be the World Heavyweight Champion...

Then on Raw they get almost 15 minutes to show what they can do. I've been watching D-Bryan for a decade and one of my favourite spots of his, is the pinning the shoulders by the painful looking stretching of his opponent's arm by pushing down on it with his foot.... His had that in his moveset for years, however on commentary you can honestly hear someone like Jerry Lawler who has wrestled a million matchesover his storied carrer be amazed by it and possibly never seen it before...

the IWC loves these two guys for whatever reason and have on many occassions said they are in terms of putting on a wrestling match.. the best in the world. And then we get it free on on tv!!!

So how did you, the IWC, wrestling fan , whoever you may be on this site... how did you rate the match with your own system, be it an A, B, C, D or by how many stars or whatever... of course taking into consideration the Jericho ending to continue storylines and the fact that tv matches are mostly shorter...

I would love to know how you all rated "the best match in the world"...

because of who they r u knew it was gonna be a good match even though it was on raw it is still 1 of the best matches wwe has had in a LONG time id rate it 4 1/4 stars an A 8 out of 10 it was pretty damn good

Would you also say it was different to most WWE style matches (such as the Orton/Ziggler match that was before it) or have these two men adapted their style to the WWE style quite well? and why was it for you a 4 1/4 star match Josh?

I'd give it a B.

I think you can you break it down into three parts, pre commercial, post commercial, ending

The pre commercial was ok, it was nothing special. It felt like I was watching a typical middle of the show Raw match.

Post commercial it got better. Both guys were showing their skill sets and it was shaping up nicely

The ending was bad. The match deserved a clean finish. I understand its never good to have your champion lose cleanly on TV, but it was champion vs. champion so you could have gotten away with it there. Even if they wanted to have a Dusty finish they could have done it better than just having Jericho run down and attack Punk to cheaply set up that potential feud

I think that Bryan getting the win was perfect for his weasley gimmick he has going right now.. it was great booking for me, as it continued him "winning" even though he ended up face first in the security barrier. I thought Punk really let Bryan showcase his skills de to their friendship and let him shine, since Punk's spot is quite secure right now.

I did like the fact the DB celebrated in his typical fashion as of late. Its all adding to his gimmick. I'll admit I was opposed to it at first but its growing on me

I'm just thankful that he had a match that wasn't against Show or Henry. He has good in ring skills but its hard to showcase that when you are fighting guys that are 400lbs

it was clearly the best match of the year so far.

i'm not much of a daniel bryan fan (never seen much of his ROH work), but honestly, that was the best performance i've seen from daniel bryan in the ring, or on the mic, so far in the WWE.

it took him long enough to impress me with a good match.

i want to see more of this from him.

IMO, this match was better than punk / ziggler at the royal rumble.

7.5 out of 10.

i'm hoping they feud in the future and are given more time in the ring.

should be awesome.

however, bryan needs to improve more on the mic. and get his character more over with the fans first before this.

I'd honestly give it a C. It was an average match from both men who really didn't turn the volume up because they don't want to blow their load on this feud just yet. These two while putting on an average match by both mens standards is actually like putting on a 5 star clinic with some of the trash they have on the roster. It was a very good match and one I should probably rate higher, but Im not going to, because I know what these two are capable of. I cant wait til they put on an "A" type caliber match for all of us to enjoy.

I would rate the match a B, because like the poster Monkey_Mania , both men are capable of much more. However, I give it a B instead of the C he gave because anyone grading this has to also keep in mind...

WWE limits what their performers are allowed to do. Before the show it most likely took alot of convincing from both CM Punk and Daniel Bryan to get WWE officials to let them stray as far away from the normal WWE style as they did in their match. But I am glad they did anyways.

Another thing I rated this match a bit higher for was, for those of you watching it, sure the start was somewhat slow...but it was perfectly acceptable for me because it was ACTUAL Wrestling. After the commercial, the match then turned into 'time to shine'. Both guys basicly had their back and forth moments to show they truely knew each other and reacted accordingly by hitting their movesets back and forth, and even countering one another. Then heading into the end, you got the 'Whos gonna take it' aspect as Bryan KEPT reversing out of the GTS over and over, and Punk kept keeping himself alive too, so you didn't know who was going to get that final moment in...and then, Jericho.

My point here is..this match actually had EVERYTHING, a solid match is supposed to have. It had the slow start to get the fans behind 'wanting something more', then it SLOWLY delivered it to them in the fashion of 'everyone gets something, one peice at a time', after that they led into the almost full on time for my move to end it, leaving you wondering who might just win.

So thats just my thoughts on that..SORRY for the drug out post.

Best tv match we've had in a long time, possibly years, I throughly enjoyed it and the ending served it's purpose, as we need the rematch only next time make it for the PPV, I wouldn't consider it a 5star match but in terms of tv matches, this was long had history and a genuine surprise match.

WWE shouldn't waste those two guys with great chemesty and have them wrestle multiple times per year on tv then expect us to plow down money for the ppv matches, we'd have the tv match keep their feud for ppv.

I'd give it a B.

"the match deserved a clean finish" why? It's their FIRST MATCH, so that doesn't make sense to have a clear winner, it's two champions, so that doesn't make sense either, it's a midcard raw match, so that doesn't even matter, exactly why in God's name does it "deserve a clean finish"? The finish didn't hurt the match unless you're one of those moves counting hipster fans who thinks every match should be a respectful sporting competition. Punk's arm selling was exceptional as Cole pointed out. Doing stuff like using his good arm for the bulldog, only pointing up with one arm on the elbow, etc. The match was very smart, each guy sold well, and it told a story. The moves they did didn't matter, it was WHEN they did the moves and how they were sold.

I see many threads saying that the WWE doesn't pull in the ratings it used to. Back in the day it was common place for Raw to pull in numbers of 6.0, wheres now its around 3.5. However recently someone told me that there isn't as much difference in the numbers as you would think as nowadays more people have tv's and access to more channels.

My question is - how many million viewers does a 6.0 in 2000 pull in and how many million viewers does a 3.5 in 2012 pull in?

The maybe if we get the figures it will be more clear if the ratingfs are so bad today.

**IF THIS SHOULD BE IN ANOTHER AREA ON THE FORUM, MODS PLEASE MESSAGE ME TO LET ME KNOW**

Nice one - so a 6.0 was about 9 million viewers, now a 3.5 is about 5.2 million viewers, WWE has lost viewers since 2000, but are other channels and more choice a factor?

I think it all depends on what kind of product people watch. Since, now you need to think about MMA and UFC taking over some rating. Then in this time we more kid frindly shows that parents want their kids to watch. You also need to think about those factors.

Shit, Raw lost 4 million viewers since then. And yeah, more shows on TV are a big factor as to why Raw is no longer as popular on TV. I hope Raw can go back to those higher numbers. I'd like a pseudo-Attitude Era kind of setting like they did post WCW and pre Benoit.

The thing you have got to renember is that WWF RAW had competition from WCW Nitro at the exact same time on the same day...

On January 4th 1999 WWF RAW scored a 5.7 to WCW Nitro's 5.0 for a combined 10.7 rating & i believe it was around 13 - 14 million people were watching pro wrestling that Monday.

Today WWE gets low 3 ratings with no competition.

WWF/E RAW average ratings -

1998 - 4.43 (Nitro - 4.35)
1999 - 5.90 (Nitro - 3.66)
2000 - 5.88 (Nitro - 2.71)
2001 - 4.64 (Nitro - 2.27)
2002 - 4.01
2003 - 3.76
2004 - 3.67
2005 - 3.81
2006 - 3.90
2007 - 3.61
2008 - 3.27
2009 - 3.57
2010 - 3.28
2011 - 3.21
2012 (so far) - 3.14

The increase in the ratings was due to the Attitude Era which grew on like a fad and like any other fad, it lost it's charm after a while. Those extra 4 million people that tuned in did so because wrestling was the cool thing to watch during that time and when it became uncool because of the lack of the extremity and other risque elements, they went away. The ratings decrease actually started in late 2001-2002 when the Attitude Era stars were still around but the product was not as extreme as it had been in 1998-1999.

Yes, and those people were never wrestling fans in the first place. They were fans of doing whatever they thought everyone else was doing.....no matter what it was. Give those people a popular mass movement and they'd be right there, going along with the crowd. If those folks became somehow convinced that dog sled racing from Nome, Alaska was what "everyone" was watching, they would watch it too, buying dog sled merchandise and being secure in the knowledge they were in snug and tight with millions of others who were doing the exact same thing as they were. For these good folks, thinking for themselves was taboo; they wanted others to tell them what to do. For awhile, it was pro wrestling.

When these people found something else to latch onto, they stopped watching wrestling. I maintain that pro wrestling has always had a solid fan base, and those people were there before the Attitude Era and are still there now, with the movement gaining new fans and losing others through attrition.

The Attitude Era and those huge ratings were a fleeting phenomena. Don't think Vince McMahon isn't trying to find a way to re-create it.
