THE full horror of the Colorado cinema shooting is becoming clearer, with confirmation that children are among 12 people slaughtered by a lone gunman.

Authorities have also confirmed that dozens were wounded in the shooting at a cinema at a shopping mall in Aurora, Colorado, a suburb of Denver.

The chaos erupted about 12.30am local time when a masked gunman opened fire as people watched the third instalment of Christopher Nolan's Batman series.

The gunman stood at the front of one of the Century 16 theatres at the Aurora Mall as the movie was playing, Aurora police chief Dan Oates said.

Federal law enforcement officials say the suspect is 24-year-old citizen James Holmes. There was no immediate word of a motive.

Police said a gas mask, rifle, handgun at least one additional weapon were found.
