Over the course of this week, there've been several stand out matches. If I'm not mistaken, ppv events are usually counted as well here so I'm gonna count the MITB ppv.
At MITB, you have the Smackdown & Raw MITB matches, Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger for the WHC and Sheamus vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship as the standout matches for the show. On Raw, you had Randy Orton vs. Edge vs. Chris Jericho in a #1 contender match and Sheamus vs. Evan Bourne. For iMPACT!, the stand out matches were Jeff Hardy vs. Samoa Joe and the MCMGs vs. Beer Money in a street fight. On Superstars, you had The Uso Brothers vs. The Hart Dynasty. Smackdown, you had Christian & Matt Hardy vs. Drew McIntyre & Cody Rhodes, Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler & Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger in a 2 out of 3 falls match to determine the #1 contender for the WHC.
The MITB matches at the MITB ppv were, obviously, the overall center point of the show. Both Raw and Smackdown put forth two excellent MITB matches, one of which saw a long time favorite win for Smackdown, namely Kane, and The Miz won for Raw, which all but guarantees he'll be WWE Champion some day. Rey Mysterio & Jack Swagger work very well together and put on a quality world title match and, though some people are disappointed in Sheamus/Cena, I enjoyed it overall. But, those two matches were overshadowed by the MITB matches, and rightfully so in my view.
Raw started off big Monday night with Orton, Jericho & Edge in a great 15 minute, ppv quality match. These are three guys that also work extremey well together and the match had true significance. The downside is that I the outcome wasn't in dobut really. I figured that the egos of Edge & Jericho would get in the way and cost them the match. Even though it didn't exactly turn out to be the case, Orton still got the win. Sheamus & Evan Bourne also put on a great match. Bourne looked very strong and looked very credible against Sheamus. However, the outcome of the match was never in doubt as Sheamus was going to win, but Evan Bourne continues to look like a star.
For TNA iMPACT, I think the best match was Jeff Hardy vs. Samoa Joe. It was the first time these two met in a match and it was a solid, quality match. However, TNA treated the match as if it was virtually nothing. They put a phone call from Eric Bischoff in the match, they spend the night hyping the ECW Originals. Basically, this potentially important match was shoved aside for ECW. The MCMGs & Beer Money match, the second one of the best of 5 series, was a street fight. There were some cool spots and all but, in my review of iMPACT! this week, I gave this match a thumbs down because it was too short and it also didn't have that big match feel to it that their ladder match had last week. Six minute street fights just don't leave that lasting feeling for me.
On Superstars, The Hart Dynasy & The Usos had a quality 10 minute tag team match against each other. It was a good match, both teams looked strong but it took place on Superstars. Superstars, while often having some good wrestling on it, is typically a throwaway show. This match didn't feel particularly important even though it was much better than the match they had at the MITB ppv.
Christian & Matt Hardy vs. Drew McIntyre & Cody Rhodes was a quality tag match. All four of the wrestlers worked hard and put on an entertaining match. At the end of the day, however, the match really wasn't very significant in and of itself. It was basically just a good way to spend 13 or 14 minutes of your time. Kofi Kingston & Dolph Ziggler was also a damn fine match. It told a great story and it had some signifigance I think. Ziggler won the match, so he's probably the #1 contender for the IC title at this point. Lastly, Rey Mysterio & Jack Swagger in a #1 contender match for the WHC in a 2 out of 3 falls match. These two always work very well together. The match went on for about 20 minutes with Rey getting the win and it was better than their match at MITB. It also felt significant in the sense that whoever won would face Kane at SummerSlam. The downside here was that the outcome wasn't really in doubt because, given the way Kane won the WHC at MITB, of course Mysterio is the logical choice to go up against him.
Overall, I have to declare the match of the week, in my opinion, to be the Raw MITB match at the ppv. I thought that it was the overall better of the two MITB matches and The Miz winning it was just the icing on the cake. The Miz is a great talent, he's paid his dues and he honestly deserved to win. I think the runner up goes to Mysterio & Swagger from last night's Smackdown. It's rare to see a two out of three fall match and this was definitely high quality. I honestly wouldn't mind if the WWE sometimes were to do a best of series between wrestlers sometime. But, in any event, that's my take on match of the week.
