Match of The Decade (2000-2010

Occasional Pre-Show
Well I was sitting there reading about the superstar of the decade and it was pretty safe to say that most felt John Cena was at the top of the list. So i thought to myself what about matches? From 2000-2010 there where just so many unbelievable matches so I thought I would see what everyone thought were the Top 5 matches that the WWE was able to put together and that wrestler were able to pull off. My list is as follows:

5) Would have to be Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit. I think it was no way out I'm not sure, but I remember that this match was between to unbelievable technicians during that time. The concept an match itself was simply unbelievable.

4) Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho(Wrestlemania 19): once again this was a match that was technically sound and was fantastic to watch live. Also it was HBK's return match so that was pretty important to me.

3) The Rock vs SCSA(Wrestlemania 17): not a technical match up but this was like the two greats getting together to create magic. The Beatles had the Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson had Prince, and The Rock had good old Stone Cold.

2) Triple H vs Shawn Michaels ( Live Raw 2003): This was for the World Heavyweight Championship and is so High in my list because I was there to see it and these two captivated me.

1) Shawn Micehaels vs The Undertaker (Wrestlemani 25): If you can't tell I'm really high on HBK. I think it's because were both from San Antonio. Anyways this is number one for me because I was there in Houston at the Reliant Stadium and for nearly 30minutes or so I have never been more mesmerized by two wrestlers like this. It was to me two icons creating a wonderful art and at 43 and 44 showing the younger guys that when at the grandest stage of them all they still own it.

That's my list and I'm really looking forward to seeing how you guys all feel about the top matches this decade.

There are a lot of matches that could be considered. Out of a 10 year period in WWE, you could actually pretty much track down everyone who is anyone in WWE during that period, except Sting I guess.

I am partial to plenty of matches. The Triple Threat World Title Match at WM 20. Lesnar/Angle at WM 19. Both Taker/HBK matches.

To me though, in a sense, the match that defined the decade, is Hulk Hogan Vs. The Rock at Wrestlemania 18. I am not sure I have ever seen such an emotionally driven match. The crowd was basically spent after that match and hardly showed up for the Main Event of Triple H versus Chris Jericho for the Undisputed Championship.

Taking nothing away from anyone else's choices...

That is my favorite match ever and I believe it is worthy of Match Of The Decade!!!

Lots to choose from, but from an EPIC point of view, I think you have to go with Rock vs Hogan. Although not '5 star match,' the build up and the past vs present story delivered. I was at the Raw in Chicago when they had their first confrontation and the staredown was like nothing I've ever felt.

Austin vs Rock at Wrestlemania were all very good bouts and also delivered. Really, any of the 60 IronMan matches were great. Triple H vs Rock, Lesnar vs Angle. People may disagree with me here, but the Raw match in England between Cena and Michaels was pretty damn good.

I think a close second, if not a tie to the Hogan/Rock match would have to Taker/HBK. I think the biggest wrestling skeptic would have suspended disbelief for this terrific match.

i think the match of the decade 2000 - 2010 is a tie between The Undertaker vs Hbk at mania 25 and im not kidding but Edge vs The Undertaker at mania 24 cause the build up was enormous from may 2007 when edge cashed in to win the whc to march 2008 then to summerslam in a great hell in a cell match but with edges buddies (edgeheads) it just made the storyline way more interesting also vickie guerrero gave edge more heat.

Angle v Benoit or Benoit v Jericho ladder match i believe they were both at rumbles, the hogan v rock was one the worst matches i have ever had unfortunate experience of seeing it was horrible and to be on someones best match of the decade list says alot about your taste, as also i believe taker v micheals two wm matches to be very very over rated just my opinion

HHH vs HBK vs Benoit at mania20. If this match is not in the top 10 list then i might as well quit watching wrestling. It was exciting, thrilling, emotional, technical and the buildup to the match was great and definitely was the best triple threat match of the decade. You just have that huge excitement, anticipation and goose bum realizing and feeling for benoit 18yrs of hard work and effort is about to earn him the world title

Match Of The Decade: Chris Jericho vs Shawn Michaels (No Mercy 2008)

I didnt think much more could be done with a ladder but these guys managed to blow my mind during match , its a must watch between these two

There are a few things that tell me about your tastes.

1. A murderer is your favorite wrestler.
2. You can't, for the life of you, figure out how to use periods, commas, or capitalization of any kind.
3. You haven't figured out that wrestling is more than the moves being performed in a match.

So, why should we take your opinion seriously? Get lost, read a book, and then come back when you're smarter.

Edit: So that I stay on topic, HBK vs Undertaker at WM25 was the best match that I've ever seen. But HBK vs Kurt Angle at... the PPV escapes me, was fantastic as well.

HHH vs HBK vs Benoit at mania20. If this match is not in the top 10 list then i might as well quit watching wrestling.

I don't get that statement at all.

Anyway, it's been said before but The Rock vs. Hogan. I thought the match was solid, but the buld up and intensity made it a landmark in wrestling history. This was a true dream match, two of wrestling's faces colliding.

When you think of wrestling, there are four predominant faces: Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and (like it or not) John Cena. Austin and The Rock reached their peaks at similar times and had numerous encounters, which sort of devalued any one specific confrontation they had. Meanwhile, Hogan and The Rock had never faced before. There match was an event, the past vs. the present, the 80s vs. the 90s (sort of), WCW vs. WWF; the best match in the last decade.

Wait, what? As The Main Man said, a match is more than the moves performed in it. If you didn't feel something watching The Rock and Hogan facing off, you're not a wrestling fan. And 'Taker vs. Michaels I and II were both beautiful matches. The first more exciting, the second more emotional.

Edit: So that I stay on topic, HBK vs Undertaker at WM25 was the best match that I've ever seen. But HBK vs Kurt Angle at... the PPV escapes me, was fantastic as well.

Wrestlemania 21, epic match.

Also, I'd just like to add that Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship at No Way Out in 2004 provided one of of the best 'feel good' moments in the last decade. I was lucky enough to be there, so I'm biased; but it hard to deny how emotional that moment was. Not the best in the decade, but it definately deserves to be up there.

Match of the Decade means we need to include TNA too! I'm nominating AJ Styles v. Samoa Joe v. Christopher Daniels at Unbreakable in 2005 for the X Division Championship.

Just a masterful match. Check it out if you don't believe me:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X64B7SK4-XQ

yeah, but well this is wwe section and this is about top match of wwe from last decade.

My best match of the decade is either undertaker vs HBK at wrestlemania 25 or undertaker vs batista at survivor series 2007.

I don't think i need to explain, why I chose taker vs HBK and about taker vs batista, well that was one of the first maches that i saw and i am huge fan of both of those superstars and i also love hell in a cell stipulation. And the match was just awesome. We saw many finishers and i can't believe how both of them just kicked out after kicked out. Good match, i just liked it.

i think there has just been too many matches in the decade to name one the absolute match of the decade but one problem i see is peoples reasoning behind their choices. People say "this was so technically sound" then they say "the emotion was overwhelming" or "the intensity was suffocating".

If emotion is what makes a good match a match of the year then why has no one said hbk vs flair?

If technical dominance is what makes a good match a match of the year then why has no one said angle vs hbk?

What makes a great match a candidate of match of the year? In my opinion its all about the emotion AND the unpredictability. Even without a storyline behind it, the wrestlers have to make me care about the winner and the match itself through their storytelling. Given this reason, id like to say that my personal pick for MotD has to be Shawn Michaels vs Undertaker at WrestleMania25, i honestly thought the streak was over at several points in that match and i was so satisfied when it was over, poor hhh and orton had to go on after that, i wouldve left just after that.

I know everyone looks down upon matches that weren't singles matches, and that everyone has even less respect for gimmick matches, but the 6-man hell in a cell at armageddon 2000 was also a great match in my eyes and i was shocked to see kurt retain against the legendary likes of austin rock hhh and taker (i purposely left out rikishi cause i think he sucks)

Im probably going to be in the minority here, but a certain tag team match at No Mercy 2002 takes the cake for me. That match would be Chris Benoit and Kurt Angle vs Rey Mysterio and Edge for the newly created WWE tag team championships. The backstory here was that Kurt and despised one another, and were constantly coming to blows. Smackdown GM Stephanie McMahon declared that if Benoit or Angle fought each other at any time, both would be suspended without pay, for a year. They managed to co-exist through an 8 team Smackdown tournament to reach the finals. On the other side, you had the extremely over Edge teaming with Rey, who was fairly new in his run within WWE.

This match was the result of two young teams who worked stiff, fast paced styles. This match went 22 minutes plus and never let up. This was perhaps the best tag team match I've seen. It had two false climaxes that appeared to be the finish of the match only to be followed by more incredible action and near falls. The last four minutes were filled with numerous momentum changes, four-way action, reversals, and believable near falls. The finish saw Angle getting Edge in the Anklelock, and Edge reversing it and applied the Anklelock himself. Angle then reversed it and reapplied the Anklelock for the tap out. An awesome match in every way possible. It was proof that tag team wrestling can thrive within the right element, and these four made sure it did. One of my favorite matches ever and having to pick just one, I went with this match, because I could find no flaw in it.

Shawn Michaels has definitely been in his fair share of good matches. That HBK-HHH-Benoit match at Wrestlemania XX was phenomenal, as was his match against Taker at 24, but it wasn't my favorite HBK match of this decade.

My favorite HBK match of this decade was another one he lost. Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 21. Not only was this match an amazing display of wrestling ability that went for nearly half an hour, but it was also one of the best matches I have ever seen. An extremely competitive match with no clear victor until the ref finally counted to three. There were what felt like 1,000 near victories, and I wish I kept track of how many times I grabbed my head in awe. I don't think I have ever been as emotionally involved in a match as I was on this one.

My 5 favorite matches of the decade (technically 2000-2009) are:

5. Rock vs. Austin at WM17- as it has been said many times, just an epic match, the perfect main event. It was the best match at possibly the best Wrestlemania of all time. These 2 had an unbelieveable trilogy of matches at Mania, but this was the best..

4. Shawn Michaels vs. Kurt Angle WM21- The 2 best wrestlers in the world put on an absolute clinic, we saw high flying, technical ability, back and forth drama, intensity, and a wonderful story told.

3. Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker WM25- Simply put, the greatest non title, non stipulation match of all time. I have never been so emotionally invested in a match.

2. Rock vs. Triple H, Backlash 2000- To me, the most underrated match ever. If this bout took place a month earlier at mania, you would see it atop every top 10 list. These 2 put on a show, at the height of the McMahon-Helmsley era, at the height of the attitude era, the 2 biggest stars of the day tore the house down, and when Austins music hit at the end, and he came out with the chair and annihalated everyone, I dont think I have ever heard a crowd pop so insanely..

I have a tie at #1.

1. Shawn Michaels vs. Triple H- SummerSlam 2002
This is here for a couple of reasons. First is obvious, it was HBK's return after 4 years, and everyone was wondering what he had left. Clearly, he had plenty. It was as if he hadn't missed a day. In PWI's match of the year runner up, Shawn put on a brutal, back and forth classic and went step for step with possible the greatest wrestler in the world at that time. There was tables, ladders, chairs, & sledgehammers. Technical wrestling, some high flying, and all out brawling. It was filled with emotion and drama, and had a sinister ending. I could watch it every day.

1. Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit- Royal Rumble 2003
The most pure WRESTLING match I have ever seen. The 2 best technical wrestlers had a textbook match that is unlike any other. The moves, holds, counters, the athleticism, the intensity, this is the match I would show to a person who had never seen a match and I needed to convince them to become a fan. Just pure brilliance..

There are a few things that tell me about your tastes.

1. A murderer is your favorite wrestler.

Not just a murderer, but a Baby Killer...

Now, back on topic. I'd say that the second one hour drawn between Samoa Joe and CM Punk at ROH: Joe v Punk II should be considered in this category. I know, it wasn't on the big stage, but the match was great, the story behind thecmstch was good and the storytelling during the match was WrestleMania worthy. It wasn't just a replay of the first match, both men look to have adapted and leaned from their first match and that made the second match that much better.

As for the other companies I'd say that for TNA it would have to be either Daniels v Joe v Styles at Unbreakable 2005 or the first Six Sides of Steel Match between AMW and Triple X in 2004.

And WWE, I think that everyone will agree with me here, it would have to be any of the epic classics between... Chavo and Hornswoggle. I know, there were so many true greats, but any time those two stepped into the ring we were going to get gold, no, make that platinum XD

HBK vs Taker at WM25 made me feel like a kid again watching wrestling so it definitely tops my list easily. Just so much was put into the build up and it was the only match that was on the entire card that I really had no idea who was going to win.

Dudley Boyz vs. Hardy Boys vs. Edge & Christian (Wrestlemania 17) my favorite of all the TLC matches. I am suprised that no one died in this match, I find that fact astonishing!

Edge vs. John Cena - WWE Championship - Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match - Unforgiven 2006, just re-watched this match again the other day and I think it is the best match of their over a year long feud.

Rock vs Austin WM17 my personal favorite of all their matches, they just both went all out and you could tell it was something special for all involved.

Also you can put just about any of the matches that HBK and Jericho had on this list because they were all out fucking standing!

Have to agree with LSN80, that Tag Team match was absolutely stunning. Probably one of the best Tag Team matches of the decade.
My personal favourite singles match of the decade is HHH vs The Rock, Iron Man match, at Judgement Day 2000. Superb story line, epic rivalry, intricate, thrilling match, and a surprise return at the end.

However, Kurt Angle vs Shane McMahon at King of the Ring 2001 is also another of my contenders for Match of the Decade. Brutal, exciting, dangerous, bloody...

Hogan vs The Rock had an atmosphere unparalleled in the past decade, and the match itself was fairly average, but that didn't matter. I would have loved to have been there live at WM18, it's not often you get that kind of audience reaction anymore (well, apart from when Cena makes an appearance!).

Also, Kurt Angle vs HBK at WrestleMania 21...an almost perfect match.

There are so many to consider! But one more...Samoa Joe vs Angle, their first match. The crowd were incredibly hot, and the match was awesome. Maybe it was at Genesis...

No doubt to me Backlash 2000 The Rock vs Triple H. This match is UNDERRATED so much because most people forget this one and remember the ironman match that was at Judgement Day when Taker came back.

I mean when have you seen the odds packed up against someone ever. There was probably no way The Rock was going to leave champ. I mean The McMahon-Helmsley Faction was surrounding the ring, Shane was the Ref, Patterson and Briscoe (McMahons Stoogies) were replacement refs, and the only fair ref, Earl Hebner, was fired......

Yet SCSA came out slapped everyone with a chair except Stephanie :'( , and then Linda came back and reinstated Hebner to count the fall.

I havent seen a match so packed with action, or a pop so loud since this event. Proabably one of the biggest in history, no doubt.

I wanna say mine but I wanna do it a bit differently. Here are my top 5 (in no particular order) matches that I ENJOYED THE MOST. They may not have been highly anticipated or a massive build up (yeah yeah I know that's important), I just had to enjoy watching it.

1. Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels - No Mercy 08
Fans expected a lot out of this coz they'd both had so many good ladder matches, but I loved it.

2. Edge vs. Triple H vs. Jeff Hardy - Armageddon 08

I'm a huge Jeff fan, don't get me wrong, but this was a great triple threat. They pulled off so many good 3-man spots.

3. Money In The Bank - WM21
The first ever MITB ladder match. What a classic.

4. Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels - Bad Blood 04
One of the best feuds of the decade. They went at it for 47 MINUTES.
47 F*CKIN MINUTES!

5. Edge vs. Christian - No Mercy 01
A ladder match between 2 of the best ladder match competitors of all time. This has been forgotten but not by me. I think they debuted a few spots there which have gone on to be in other great matches.

All right, I'm sure I've overlooked many, but these are the ones that came to me.

My pick is Kurt Angle vs Undertaker at No Way Out 2006. Those two went at it for nearly 30 minutes. Kurt Angle ended up getting the win with a roll up. This match was full of counters and near tapouts and Taker made use of the triangle choke to counter the ankle lock. This was a VERY good match by 2 of the best in the business and I'm also surprised it got no mention. This match also was on my first PPV Buy, I had only started watching in mid-late 2005 before Unforgiven (though I have numerous DVDs from 2003-2005 and some from the mid-late 90s).

How can Rock Hogan be one of the worst matches you have ever seen? Have you just never seen a match with Khali? It wasn't the most technically sound match but the crowd was insane for that match! probably the most i have ever heard a crowd be into anything! And saying the 2 mania matches between Michaels and Taker is your opinion but i do completely disagree, i loved both of these matches and think that they are 2 of the best matches of all time not just of this decade, another match i love was the first ever elimination chamber match! just a great match with a great ending. Another one of my favorites is the IC title match between Rey Mysterio and John Morrison on smackdown a few years back, i was live for this and i just loved everything about that match

1 Hogan vs Rock at Wrestlemania in 2002 was similar in scale to the Andre vs Hogan match at Wrestlemania 3. It might not have been the best match, but it was the epic match of the decade. Plus, it ended Hogan's run in the NWO.

2 Taker vs Michaels (Both Wrestlemanias). Anything with Shawn in it was amazing.

3 Any time Michaels and Jericho squared off. Or Stone Cold and The Rock. Tied.

Wow u marks really know how to make a guy feel like an ass haha. If he likes a murdering psychopath let it be. I mean TNA is like the fetus of the wrestling business an we let it stay how it is :p. Yes every post is any topic I WILL rip on TNA cuz well, it's just that damnn BaDD! Neway best matches of the decade?....

I have no particular order cuz it'll take too much time deciding but I'll narrow it down to 5:

HBK vs Kurt Angle- Started with HBK being technical against angle(wow) to a brawl to angle slams from the top to a sweet chin music outta nowhere to the ankle lock for the win

John cena vs HBK at the Raw after Wrestlemaina- thank god i watched raw that night

Undertaker vs HBK- both but I loved the finish of the second one

Royal Rumble 2001- it becomes a HARDCORE rumble match. Austin gets destroyed by Triple H prior to his entry and comes back to win it

Brock Lesnar vs Eddie geurreo- R.I.P man thank u for that match at no way out
