Jesse Sorensen: Future of TNA?

Dark Match Winner
This guy is one of the future stars like it or not.Even with the injury he managed to keep himself in good shape and mind you he is only 23 or 24 years old which tna needs right now.My question is does jesse ready to mainevent in your opinion? He has good looks, athletic, mic skills could still be improved.

Sorensen is the most generic wrestler I've seen come through TNA in a long, long time. I'll sound callous for saying so, but his breaking his neck in that match with Ion is the only reason I think anyone truly cares about him, because I didn't see anyone chalking him up in any capacity before it happened.

Maint event? Let's see if his eventual come back can prove he can even hang in the X Division first, regardless of his age.

The one thing I will say for Sorenson:

Since he's been rehabbing, he now has built the physique that would be required to make a jump above the X-division. Much like Styles and Aries he now has the kind of build that allows him to transition to being a upper carder physically in spite of his naturally smaller stature.

Too bad he doesn't have a fraction of either man's ability. But he is young, so he could still improve and surprise the likes of myself, IDR, and many others who never saw him as more than a very bland performer with nothing special to really offer.

The problem with Sorensen is that to me he falls way short of the requirements to be a "great wrestler", and because of that fact I just have a hard time actually caring about him. I watch wrestling to see talent, not watch a guy struggle to cut a promo, or fail to entertain most fans while I try to find the positives in his overly negative package. I have no interest in that sort of thing, even if some do, and I'd imagine the vast majority of fans feel the same way. I'm not in the business of coddling. I'm in the business of being entertained, so if you can't do it, you aren't worth my TV time. That's just how I see it.

Being about 300 pages deep into Bret Hart's "Hitman" book, I was surprised and happy to see that Hart himself has a nearly identical criteria for judging whether or not a performer is a great wrestler, or main event caliber. In his own words:

"I have my own theory on the three qualities it take to be a great pro wrestler. The first one is look or physical presence. On a scale of one to ten, Hogan, being such an awesome specimen, might rate a ten, for example. Although it always helped, it wasn't as important to be tough as it was to look tough, especially if you were a heel. The second quality is the ability to talk, to sell yourself; Hogan might score another easy ten, whereas a guy like Dynamite [Kid] would have to work to earn a two. The third is wrestling talent, the ability to work. Here it would be just the opposite: Hogan would rate the two and Dynamite would get the ten. A score in the high twenties adds up to a great wrestler."

Some of you will remember I had a very similar criteria, mine being hinged on a main event caliber performer having to have at least two of the three among (a) a great personality, (b) superior vocal talent and (c) adequate in-ring skill.

Using Hart's theory, I'd put Sorensen somewhere in the vicinity of:

Physical Presence: 7
Ability to Talk: 3
Wrestling Talent: 4

That puts him well short of the "high twenties" required to groom a great wrestler.

If Jesse Sorensen is the future of TNA or any promotion for that matter, that promotion is screwed!

All he has is a look. Extremely sloppy wrestler - Zema Ion may be given the blame for breaking his neck on television but I'm on Shane Helms side, who pointed out Sorensen was wrongly positioned for that moonsault when it happened and therefore is as much at fault. No persona to speak of, unless being a jock that has no traits of a jock unless you count carrying a football around counts, and he's green as freshly cut green grass in the summer. Again, if hes the future, I'm satisfied staying in the present thank you.

I don't really see it with Sorensen. Like IDR said, Sorensen is one of the most generic looking wrestlers I've seen in a long time. These days, your average generic wrestler is a nice looking guy with a good build and some tribal tattoos.

Aside from his look, Sorensen's character, if that's what you wanna call it, was the most generic thing I think I've ever seen. the guy came to the ring carrying a football and wearing a letterman's jacket. That was the extent of Sorensen's personality. He's someone that pretty much screams typical X Division wrestler: a guy with little to no personality whose greatest contributions amounts to a handful of flashy spots.

If Sorensen does return to TNA after he's all healed up, I do expect him to get a big sympathy push from TNA. They'll use the injury he suffered and the guts he's shown in coming back after such an injury to try and make him a young, sympathetic babyface. I have little doubt that TNA will give him a run as X Division Champion and will try, at least to some degree, to make it feel like a momentous occasion when they do.

This guy is one of the future stars like it or not.
People tend to end their opinions with "like it or not" to imply that whatever our opinion, there's some sort of objective quality that we can't argue. And I'm sorry, but from where I'm standing, that's just not true. Do I hate Jesse Sorensen? Absolutely not. But do I love him? Well, here's the thing... I pretty much "nothing" him. We have seen so little, and he's left such a minor mark on TNA. And by mark, I mean the spot his head hit the floor, because that's really the only thing people remember about him. Offensive? Yes.

Even with the injury he managed to keep himself in good shape
How do you know this? I mean, I'm sure he has, but it just seems such an odd thing to say about a guy we haven't seen in a year. Unless you follow him on Twitter or something.

and mind you he is only 23 or 24 years old which tna needs right now.
23, and I will not argue with you on that point. Even some of their new guys - Christian York, Joey Ryan - are already in their 30's.

My question is does jesse ready to mainevent in your opinion? He has good looks, athletic, mic skills could still be improved.
Is a 23-year-old with less than a year and a dozen matches worth of experience in TNA ready to main event? A guy that's been out with injury for ~9 months?

Jesse has that classic, good ole' boy look. That's definitely a good thing in wrestling, but he's also under 6-feet and only weights about 200 pounds, soaking wet. Certainly we're into an age where that is starting to matter less and less, but it's still a factor. For every Austin Aries, CM Punk or AJ Styles that makes a huge impact, there's a dozen guys the size of James Storm and Bobby Roode. Guys Sorrensen's size can make it all the way to the top, no doubt, but there are more who fail than succeed.

That being said, I've now gone and watched a few of his matches to better answer your question. My honest answer - and I feel I'm being incredibly generous here - is that until we see more of him, and until he gets more experience, it's impossible to tell. He's on 23, and he's simply not been wrestling that long. He worked maybe a year of independents, and got immediately moved to Impact. The matches we have seen, he spends most of the time selling and getting his ass kicked. That's the rub for young babyfaces; I'm not picking on him for that. And he's very athletic, so there's no doubt that he could become a good wrestler.

My knee-jerk reaction is to laugh this off with a self-righteous "are you kidding me?!? lulz!" type of response, but I'm trying to be less of a douchebag. I appreciate the optimism, and I'm in not saying "no". My final decision is simply that we don't, and can't know of his potential until we see more. Even if he sucks for five years, the last two years of Big Show, Mark Henry, Bully Ray, Bobby Roode, Austin Aries, and a myriad of other stars who completely re-invented themselves, have taught me to keep an open mind.

Jesse Sorensen is a great talent and I can see him in a few years being the TNA world champion and being the face of the company for many years... SAID NO ONE EVER. I remember his promo from Destination X you know the one where he came and told everyone he thanks them for their support and well wishes from his injury and I thought to myself I honestly couldn't give a dam he is bloody terrible to listen to. It's a combination of that god awful voice of his and that major inability of his to cut a decent promo. Here is an example of a better promo:

Furthermore Sorensen is like grass in the ring I honestly don't even know how he got a contract with TNA he is average on a good day and on a bad day he got his neck broken. Finally when people where talking about his gimmick I didn't realise he had one he is that plain and average.

Apparently I was the only big fan he had around here last year. Shame too. He was bland, simple and somewhat sloppy. But showed initiative. He got a push above the rest of the X Division crop in 2011 aside from Austin Aires and was probably the most likely to end his reign. He just had a magnetic look. Would I say he's the "future" of TNA? First we should see what condition he's in. Neck injuries can do terrible damage to a wrestlers repertoire.

Soresen looks really good in that pic, but from what I remember of him, nothing really stood out. The whole varsity jacket and tossing the football to fans deal, was super cheesy. I don't recall him being a great talker, and seemed pretty green in the ring.

Of course, the biggest question is whether his neck will be able to hold up, and what time of limitations it'll put on his ring work.

I do think he's going to get hotshot into the X-Division title picture on his return. Preferably, he'd take the belt off of Ion, but I can't see RVD dropping the belt to Ion.

I look at the pictures of Sorensen and all I can see about him is he looks like a mini-Randy Orton....and that's about it. When the only thing you're known for is breaking your neck on PPV it says something about someone. He doesn't even have the charisma of Eric Young to be a long standing comedy character, let alone the future of TNA. Although it always seems to be the easy answer, perhaps a Heel Turn is the way to go for him, because he's just to generic as a bland babyface. Otherwise he needs to work on his in-ring stuff when/if he returns because TNA is his ONLY chance of having a contract with a international wrestling company.

I hope that they leave the title out of the picture and have a "blood feud" so to speak between them (Ion). Have them fight all over the Impact Zone every week for a month or two with a cumulation of Sorenson winning. If he will succeed:

A: People will give a crap about him after that.
B: Show that he has some talent after working with someone for a bit, and being comfortable working with him.
C: Come up with some character.

This being said. He IS generic, looks just like Sam Shaw. Jay Bradley has the cocky heel thing perfected, and has the facial mannerisms to sell stuff. I don't think anything will pan out. I wish they would have kept Nese.

Hey I thought he definitely had inring skill but beyond that fuck no is he an easy future X Division champ? Probably yes. If he hadn't gotten injured he'd have had at least one reign by now. But world champ? No way whatsoever he does not have the mic skills. Or if he does he's been hiding them.

And I liked his little football gimmick. Any gimmick is better than no gimmick that is a philosophy I strongly stand by and I know many of you will disagree with me. But that made him at least somewhat unique. If he didn't have that I probably wouldn't even remember him! Zema has his hairspray, York has his dreads, Jesse had his football...
