God, I love technology

Excellence of Execution
If you know what you're doing, it can make life so much more enjoyable. For example, over the last two days, I have set up a machine dedicated as a file system server, transferred all of my music and video to the server so EVERY computer in my house (there are 7 of them) can access those files from the network, and I've figured out how to take documents, create them into an ebook, and upload them to my phone without having to buy anything.

Technology is great.

That it is. I love how easy it is to make eBooks for my Kindle for free. How do you do it? I usually use Microsoft Word (saving it as an HTML file before I start) for the stories/documents, and then use Calibre to convert it to the .mobi format. Works like a charm.

I've heard good things about Calibre, but Stanza Desktop did the job for me.

Sly, what happens in the event of a power cut or systems failure? You all backed up there?

It's quite incredible what technology can do now.

I never stop being surprised at what I can do with a computer.

I completely agree, one of my favorite things to do is putting together my own computer when I buy new hardware, and being under education to become an IT Supporter gives me the chance to sit and have some fun with some servers and some routers, I hate Cisco but I generally like working with wireless routers and servers.

I've been considering setting up a server of my own for my house, hell even just getting a simple NAS server would be sufficient for me.

Biggest issue is getting the funds to set something like this up. I have all the networking equipment I would need, but before I get my NAS I do want to set up small workstations along my workbench when I have moonlight work for PC repair. Nothing major, get some refurbished LCD screens and simple USB Keyboard and mouse set along with a power cable and ethernet cable to set up the station. Of course if I had that much side work going on I can always through a KVM onto each station to double up the amount of PC's I can have up. The NAS server would come later and would be great for backing up data for customers.

Need money for all this though..

Same, or well not a NAS server, I was thinking of just setting up a file server for myself, backup and such just so I can clean up on my computer every now and then without worrying about loosing some damn game, I bottle my computer up with trash and rarely reformat because of all the saved games etc.

I'd probably need some time before I do it although, saving for other more important things, but I would definitely do it by the end of the year most likely.
