It's a woman, actually. I don't think she's actually a film professor by nature, but a Japanese studies professor because I've never seen her listed as a professor for any other film class. In fact, the other two professors I had for my foreign film classes were usually based in the cultural studies rather than film studies, though the guy I had for Cuban cinema definitely knew his stuff, and the woman I had for French film wasn't bad. This professor seems to know the least about film of the three, or at least she hasn't displayed a vast knowledge of it thus far. She's a slightly older woman (40s or so), and a tiny bit of research says she's teaching this class as well as Japanese pop culture, which leads me to believe she's mostly interested in Japanese culture, and not film analysis.
I'm not upset with her. There are only a handful of students in this class for cinema studies requirements, and most are here for culture requirements. They don't need to learn about montage theory or about how Marxist theory interacts with film; they need the basics of how to analyze film so they can interpret the images they see.
