You know what pisses me off? The fact that Wimbledon beating Liverpool in 1988 has just been described as the "last cup final upset". Wimbledon finished 7th that season. Everton finished 15th in 1995, and won it against United who came 2nd.

When they talk about big clubs and small clubs, league position is nothing to do with it. Everton are a big club, they always have been regardless of their league position. Wimbledon and Wigan certainly are not, they don't have the history or the fanbase. In Wimbledons case they were non-league 10 years earlier, Wigan were in the bottom division 15 years ago.

Somebody at ITV is definitely trying to hammer home that this is the biggest upset in the final since 1988, whether it is or not.

Is there actually any doubt? Where is the biggest upset amongst these?

Relegation candidates Everton beating the best team in the country is definitely a bigger upset than a team who were on a run where they finished in the top half 8 seasons out of 9, and in the top 8 5 times out of 9.

Everton might have been historically a big club, but in the 90s they were abysmal. That win was at least as unexpected as the one today. When Wimbledon won, again they were a small club, but they were good at the time. Coventry winning the previous season, or West Ham winning from the second tier earlier in the 80s is a far bigger deal.

If an upset is just a historically small club winning the cup, regardless of their current quality, Portsmouth in 2008 is the last big upset.

That's a different kind of upset I'd say in that they were expected to win on the day.
As far as Wigan go, they're a very small club who really don't belong in the top league and they just beat the English champions and one of the richest clubs in the world. In terms of finances and club size it'd be like Barcelona losing to Watford in an important game.

So much hate for Wigan lol.
Are we so jaded that we have to shit on another club's upset victory?

Now Wigan will be the greatest cup upset since ....

I think I speak for everyone except Lee, City fans and some of our more pretentious members of society when I say, "GET IN WIGAN!"

Since Martinez took over Wigan he's spent something like 55 million and made them perennial relegation favorites.

Underdogs Wigan were, but you're not a massive underdog if you spend that much money. The only reason people see it as such a big upset is because Martinez has generally made Wigan into a very poor Premiership team.

Fulham are absolutely awful. I can see them losing 10-0 to Swansea and going down on that performance. Seriously though, if Wigan beat Arsenal then we will get an excellent last day with them, Sunderland and Villa.

I think you meant Pulis for Stoke. Since Martinez took over at Wigan, he has spent far less than that. The only time he spent big, it was a flop for Boselli. He also had to contend with losing a key first team player every season since he took over.

He spent about 33 million and received about 40 million in transfer fee during his time. I wouldn't use spending as a knock on Martinez' reputation. One could even say he should have spent more to provide more competition in the squad so his players don't slag off during the start of seasons and they don't need miracles every year to stay up.

I'm not entirely sure whether or not I've already stated this in this thread or anywhere but I'll repeat myself if I have; I don't think Alex Ferguson is the best manager ever. It's been giving me a slight itch in the past few weeks that it's been almost unanimously agreed that he's the best manager ever when he might not even be the best British manager ever. There, I said it. I expect you all to form a large mob fueled by anger and contempt, then I expect you to try and attack me with pitchforks and cricket bats... over the internet. Of course.

Yeah, you are wrong.

Even as a Liverpool fan who would crow to high Heaven about the forgetting of Bob Paisley in the list of great managers - his three European Cups has still to be matched - Sir Alex Ferguson is far and away the best manager Britain has produced in terms of success and longevity.

To say otherwise is denial.

You couldn't have imagined 12 months ago that

Ferguson - Gone
Mancini - Gone
Di Matteo - Gone
Wenger - Still employed

No-one would have expected that. Next season is going to be the most open league yet, but you'd expect the title is going to Mourinho. I've just got a strange feeling about Arsenal or Spurs.

Bob Paisley is one I think a case can be made for.
