While it is great he had the guts to come out, I find it very, very sad that this is considered "breaking news". Why should someones sexuality be breaking news? I understand there are still a lot of people out there against it, but for the majority, especially going into the future, it has become the norm to be within a community where openly gay people are around. Those opening lines made me sound like an asshole, but what I meant was that it shouldn't be considered something groundbreaking. It's great for Darren Young that he feels he can be open about it, but why should a big deal be made about it? Regardless, good for him and I hope WWE embrace it rather than run away from it.
On a side not, I hope they don't twist Darren Young's character because of this. The Prime Time Players are good as they are, no need to change it up because of this. The probability is others already knew anyway. I hope it inspires others to be more trusting of the world.

I see it as nothing more than Young trying to get himself over by coming out of the closet. In today's PC society he'll be protected by the media and the WWE forever. Now you're going to see him go on a winning streak and compete at Wrestlemania. The WWE loves publicity. He's a smart kid.

I have to admire Darren Young for coming out either if his fellow superstars knew or not. To be a openly gay athlete in any sport is not heard of as often as it should be, but with Darren being open about this and the LA Galaxy player who came out not too long ago maybe just maybe more athletes will feel at ease that 99% of the general public are not fazed that someone is gay or lesbian.
Over here in the UK i can name just one openly gay footballer (soccer) player ever and that was Justin Fashanu who played late 70's early 80's (although many rumours have gone round over the years). That goes to show how far behind we are with sports stars being able to come out and feel fine with it.
Big praise for the guy he will hopefully make many a youngster who is struggling with their sexuality feel that whatever they decide it's not as tough as it could be nowadays.

Except that this was done in repsonse to a question. His coming out publicly was happenstance as the TMZ guy asked him the question. It wasn't a "smart" move, it was answering a question honestly. Whatever the effects, do you think he should have lied about it? How bout waiting to see this monumental push you prophesise before you critisise a guy for doin absolutely nothing but answer a question.
Even if this was a "smart" move, how do you fault him that, in a business that is dominated by those who politick and built on the backs of those who do not? And should a worker not be rewarded for bringing good publicity to his company? It's the same as John Cena granting wishes. Lots of happy tweeters.

Pat Patterson is openly gay, Chris Kanyon came out as homosexual, Orlando Jordan is openly bisexual; this is nothing new. And to congratulate someone on their sexuality is actually insulting, it's nothing new, it's nothing out of the norm, it's 2013 and nobody should care.
I commend his bravery. I wish him well in the WWE and hope that he makes it easier for others to do the same.

I'm cynical so I like to think that Young saw the writing on the wall for his long term WWE career and came out as gay as a way of prolonging his career in the company. 'Cus firing a gay dude, that's got bad publicity all over it if he's fired/released in the immediate future.

If Darren Young is released by WWE at some point in the next few years and/or doesn't make it as far as he thinks he should have, would he go the "it's because I'm gay" route? I know nothing about Young behind the scenes. I can't recall ever reading any sort of articles on backstage rumors or reports of him having a bad rep backstage. I haven't really read anything negative about him, at least not that I can think of. Again, maybe it's just me being a bit cynical but it we all know that the world is full of people that want or need to blame others for why their plans for their career don't go the way they want them to. Two words: Pat Patterson. Not only is he a well known gay man, he's also Steph's godfather. How many homophobes do you know that would let a gay man be a godfather to their kids?
And come on, these guys go out and fondle one another wearing nothing but speedos and baby oil. Odds are they'd have worked out that the gay guys on the roster are able to keep it in their trunks.
I was surprised he casually answered a question that will alter his perception in the public forum, and could possibly have career consequences. I imagine Darren felt uncomfortable keeping it secret this long and took the opportunity that was presented to him. The fact is Young has always been who he is, and it hasn't stood in the way of him becoming a world class wrestler in WWE. I've watched Young since his days in the indies on the east coast as Frederick of Hollywood. He's always been a great talent, friendly with all fans, and he can put on excellent matches. He has yet to get a real opportunity in WWE and I always knew he deserved it. This bit of gossip will raise his profile, as homosexuals in the military and pro sports are a hot topic in the media, due to unwarranted discrimination. Regardless, Young is a positive role model for anyone who is different and proud of it.

While I think that someone's sexual orientation should not in any way be newsworthy, it's just a fact of life that people do care. After all, remember all the uproar over Jason Collins when he openly came out? Just because you choose to be a jackass and say nobody cares, doesn't make that statement factual. I applaud the fact that he feels comfortable enough with himself that he feels he has no need to hide i the closet as sadly people still do. He's still a boring, boring wrestler, but I'm happy for the guy for his personal life.

"Pretty Boy" Patterson debuted with red lipstick, pink shorts and a poodle. Funny for the sixties I bet, but not the kind of thing you'd want to try pull off in this day and age. Not after sitting through Billy and Chuck either. Nobody wants to have their role, or life, defined by their sexuality.
I get the Orlando comparison, but Chris Kanyon lead his entire proffessional carreer hiding the fact that he was gay. Even denying it openly after playing an openly gay pro wrestler gimmick. Dud was made come out of a giant box singing Boy George for gods sake (see spoilers, and what some claim is takers stiffest shot with a steel chair). His struggle as a gay guy in pro wrestling are a huge part of what his book talks about. He hid it to a point that he felt he had to sleep wit ring rats to prove he was straight to the other guys and feared outing would ruin his carreer. It most likely played a huge role in him taking his own life.

Nobody cares that Young is gay, but for him to be open about it is a big enough step. Its a good showing that it is, in fact 2013, like you said.

It doesn't matter what business he is in, there are openly homosexual sport stars all over the world in every sport, from basketball with Jason Collins to Freddie Lumberjg in soccer to Gareth Thomas in rugby to figure skaters, Olympic gold medal winning athletes - hell you name it and there is someone openly homosexual, even in the UFC Liz Carmouche is openly gay.
This isn't a "huge step," this isn't an achievement, this isn't something worth praise and the fact that there are LGBT groups around the world fighting for equality and to be viewed in the same light as hetrosexuals and you have a bunch of fucking morons like those in the WWE and the sheep who follow everything it says congratulating Darren Young... on being gay... is proof that this "progressive society" we live in is a facade.

I had the same feelings for when Jason Collins announced his homosexuality. I give both men a lot of credit for coming out, because it takes guts, but as others have already said, it's 2013. Being openly gay in today's world really isn't something new anymore. Sir Ian McKellen is considered to be a legendary actor, and he's an openly gay man. Zachary Quinto (he plays Spock in the new Star Trek films) is also an openly gay man. At my job, I work around men and women, who are openly gay, and they don't have to hide it.
And I've seen other posts mention it, and yeah, it might sound cynical, but I wouldn't rule out Young suddenly announcing his homosexuality as a means of keeping his job. Fact of the matter is, Darren Young is a mediocre talent at best, who faded away into obscurity a long time ago. But WWE and Vince wouldn't want the PR nightmare/backlash of releasing a gay man, so Young makes the announcement. Cynical line of thinking? I don't think so, because it's a more than realistic scenario in my eyes. At the end of the day, Darren Young is a man, who needs to pay his bills and eat, so he's going to need a steady source of income no matter what. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I've never heard anything about Young having other interests or another profession outside of pro wrestling.

As soon as I saw the headline the first person I guessed was Darren Young so this comes as no surprise to me.
Good for him coming out, nothing wrong with that. I don't see it as much of a detriment to his career, other gay stars like Pat Patterson had great careers while they were openly gay and that was at a time where being gay wasn't as socially acceptable as it is now. I don't see Darren Young becoming a big superstar anyways so I could see this being brought up for a few weeks but after that it will be mostly forgotten and things will go back to normal. Darren and Titus will continue being the prime time players doing nothing on the roster.

Once again, no one is saying "Congrats on your homosexuality,Darren!". Everyone is praising his willingness and bravery to be the first openly gay active WWE wrestler. It should be acknowledged and appreciated as it will open doors and make things easier for other aspiring gay wrestlers or maybe some still closeted wrestlers. I don't see the issue here? It is a huge step, that WWE would acknowledge that some of their wrestlers are homosexual and even trying to promote the acceptance of it.
