Cover Song Discussion Thread

Absolutely fucking epic. Beyond epic. Gosh damn I love this fucking song. Danzig originally wrote the song for Johnny Cash, Cash did the song, then Danzig did his own version, so sorta debateable wether this is even a cover or not. I remember seeing a thread about what music defines you, what music plays when you walk. THis is mine, for a number of reasons. Danzig's voice just fits it so damn well. Love this.

Not really here to debate wether this is actually BETTER than the original, becuase I honestly think it could be debated that its not. The Seger version fuckin rocks my socks. Still one of my favorites, and one I love. This one was pretty much my theme song during the galavanting of 2007. I was CONSTANTLY "on the road" as we refer to it (in the air actually) traveling, and my stage was fucking diasasters and fighting in the world. Along the way, I would have my times with various pretty girls (remember this was the year of the pretty models, for me) and would lay in bed (or sleeping bag on the ground) with such a collage of thoughts in my head. A lot like the stuff here. It was glory and sorrow, mixed just like the song.

Obviously, had to put this in here. My favorite artist of all time, one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. I cant relate to this one quite as much as the other two, becuase my life kicks ass. Only a little, becuase I do know of some of the lonliness he expresses, and how far away so many people are, becuase of the life he has lead. I keep people far from me as well, and fear hurting them, as a part of association with myself. Not for the same reasons as the man in the song, but still. Obviously, one of the most haunting, tear jerking, strong emotional covers ever. When the original singer himself proclaims the cover blows his out of the water, its likely pretty rockin.

I'm sure you've heard them both, both are known, still thought I'd post them. Both of these covers are simply soothing, and create a different image than the originals. Like I said, I'm sure you know them, but if you don't you should give each a listen.

Faced with a choice here, I was gonna say Travis' cover of .....Baby, One More Time, or possibly even Tsunami Bombs version of Barbie Girl. Then, I thought of one of my favorite non-metal bands.

The Corrs did a version of an REM classic, that I think everybody should hear. The song was/is Everybody Hurts. What the talented lasses and lad from the family Corr did was slow it down even more than Michael Stipe and company. I know, hard to believe, right? Well, it actually works, and tremendously. Not only do you not have to deal with Stipes' whiny vocals, but you also get two of my favorite instruments to play: violin/fiddle and Bodhran. Win. Needless to say, for my money, the following rendition blows the original out of the water.

I've got to say either ADTR's cover of The Fray's Over My Head (Cable Car), or New Found Glory's cover of The Goo Goo Dolls' Iris. Both great covers that stay true to the original, but add their own touch of beauty, and I actually consider both of them above the original.

My favorite cover is Quiet Riot's version of "Come On Feel the Noise" because it always gets me excited and it's one of the few songs where the cover is far better than the original. While the original version by Slade is great too, Quiet Riot's was better. It has always been one of my favorite songs and I remember it being one of the songs we would listen to in the locker room before and after football practices at my high school, good times.

I think Reds cover of "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran is brilliant. I'm biased because i saw them cover it live first, and then heard it later on the CD, so it was just one of those "moments in time" when I saw them this summer. I may get ripped for this, but I thought it was done just as well as the original.

This is a sensational cover of Outkast's original by Obadiah Parker. It was featured on an 8th season episode of Scrubs during the Janitor's wedding.

Infected Mushroom
Riders on the Storm
Legend of the Black Shawarma

<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2j6rbPdoNfg&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2j6rbPdoNfg&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>

Riders on the storm is a classic, and Infected Mushroom made sure to do them justice, even though this is more of a remix than a cover it still fits the bill. To even think this song could be made into a trance style house track is hard to even picture, but the Infected Mushroom golden touch did the job. Awesome cover(remix) gets me going every time.

Awesome picks by NorCal. As well as IC who posted Between the Buried and Me, one of my favorite bands. Even though you called them Between the Dead and Me, i'll forgive you IC25.

I'll fix it by posting another cover of theirs:

They have an album of covers called The Anatomy Of and they cover Queen, Pantera, Metallica, Sepultura and other great bands.

Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole'Iz' is dead now, and I'm not familiar with much of his stuff. But this cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is one of the most mellow relaxing songs of all time. Light one up and listen:

Ill post more later.

Love the "Somewhere Over The Rainbow!" was used in the finale of the best TV series ever... Life On Mars... never knew where it came from till now... many thanks...

As for mine... The Top Ten kicks off with this classic originally by the Isley Brothers...featuring the best vocal performance John Lennon ever did... and who doesn't love this scene!

At 9 we got... the original...

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes made it a must cover for any self respecting rock band...

At number 8... the singer changes, even if the backing band remain the same... but it counts as Elton released it on his album... this is the definitive version of this song.

At seven its a cover never commercially released, but the most beautiful version of this song I ever heard... and the original is pretty damn special... this is just amazing...

A Dylan cover comes in at 6... and its over 40 years old and still fresh as a daisy...

At 5 its the Doors cover (again different singer...original band) but the best doors song and their best cover... take a listen... Scott Weiland knocks this out of the park...

at 4 we have a cover of a Mike D'Abo (see Manfred Mann above) song, made famous by Chris Farlow AND Rod Stewart... famously used as the theme to the UK version of "The Office"...only for pint sized welshman Kelly Jones to pop up on the annual new years Jools Holland TV show with a beautiful version... it was then number 5 the following christmas with his band The Stereophonics...

At 3 we have a Hard Rock cover of arguably the first proper Hard Rock song... ok so the Beatles pioneered a lot of stuff, but Aerosmith rocked that shit hard...

At 2... it's a toss up... I'll put the original, the cover and the rip off... decide for yourself which is better (hint... they are all awesome...)

ELO (Original)

Def Leppard

Paull Weller (The rip off)

So that leaves number one...

At number one... the most beautiful cover, of the most beautiful song ever...

first of, if you are looking for good covers, make sure to check out the "punk goes" series. punk goes pop 1 and 2, punk goes crunk, and puck goes 80's and 90's are really good CD's and i recommend checking them out.

as for my favorite covers, i like the artists who make bad songs good. such as travis's cover of "hit me baby one more time" and bayside's cover of "beautiful girls".

then there are others that give a whole different feel to the original song. say anything's "i got your money", reel big fish's "brown eyed girl", "put yo hood up" by set your goals, "kids/pokerface" by weezer, and cake's "i will survive".

little side note: christian's current entrance music is a cover by story of the year of a much much worse version by waterproof blonde

Maybe I missed a post or something, put I am surprised I haven't seen anyone mention Jimi Hendrix's cover of "All Along The Watchtower."

Yep, not many people know that song was originally done by Bob Dylan.

Another great cover I have been listening to is "Mad World" by Evergreen Terrace. After hearing the original by Tears for Fears and then the Gary Jules version, you would think this was another sappy albeit somewhat disturbing song, but I assure you this song takes the original and turns it upside down. It's a little punkish in its Angst but still is Rock to its core.

But my favorite cover is both Thin Lizzy AND Metallica's cover of "Whiskey In The Jar". I feel both versions keep to the song's roots which are practically hundreds of years old! Definitely worth a mention I believe.

Another honorable mention- The Misfits version of "The Monster Mash" :D

I'm just gonna post a couple that I've been listening to the most lately.

I actually went and bought this cd (which i would recommend doing) a couple weeks ago and was insanely surprised to see this cover on there. The whole album is pretty intense, but I think they really made this their own. I also discovered that they had an album prior to this one in which they covered a Faith No More song. But since it's not Epic, I do not know nor care because I hate Faith No More.

I'm slowly coming around to the third reincarnation of Drowning Pool and this is one of the reasons. I absolutely love the way they did this. On the comments to this video there were a lot of people hatin on it and saying Dope and some other band did better covers, however I disagree. I couldn't imagine Dope doing a good cover of their own fucking song.

It's cliched, but Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah, by Leonard Cohen originally. This man completely reinvented the song using just his voice and a guitar. He made the song his own, and whenever somebody thinks of the song Hallelujah, they think of Jeff Buckley. The amount of emotion the man poured into this song when it wasn't even his own is incredible. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried when I first heard it, it just plays with your emotions and pulls at the heartstrings. It is what a cover song is all about.

Another cover song I like is Counting Crows - Big Yellow Taxi, originally by Joni Mitchell. The original song is.... not that great, and that's putting it nicely. Counting Crows updated the song, put a pop shine on it, and reinvented the song to suit them. THey did it perfectly, and they got a tune that was really catchy. They actually made the song listenable, and they got a top 10 hit out of it.

One song I can say I really like is the cover song s happy together. i can never remeber what band did that cover but I just love the way the whole song fits together. I am pretty sre it is good charllote I know I probably spelled it wrong. I don't remember the name of the band that sings the original but, I'll give it a g and say the turtles. I relly like the cover song better than the original. The original is to slow for my tastes.

I'm certain there's been a song that you've heard in the radio, seen a music video to, heard at a live concert etc. and then realized it's a cover version of another band or another artist of some form, and you thought "man that sounds pretty awesome" and grew to totally dig the cover version rather than the actual original when you choose to listen to it.

I have a few that I like for example this one.

Limp Bizkit - Behind blue eyes, personally I cannot STAND the version from The Who, and I find it to be boring, yet Limp Bizkit's version has gone on to become my favorite song of all time, yes all time, you heard me, I feel Fred Durst gave new life to this song, doing incredible well in a song type that he's not usually known for due to the fact that he's very nu-metal / alternative metal strong from my point of view, but this song is very normal rock like.

Another one, while I absolutely love the original one, I still remain to like the cover version of it

Eli Mattson - Walking in Memphis, now I know it's not a complete version (and I sadly cannot find one of the full song from him) but I feel his voice is very strong for this song, and I think he's an incredible talent, and the part where he stops the piano for a second continues to give me chills.

I'm sure there's multiple songs that I could continue with on this list, but for now I'm gonna stick with this, and ask for you to take your time and contribute to the list of cover songs that you've grown to enjoy throughout time, enjoy more than the original, or just enjoy as a total.

Marilyn Manson - Tainted Love.

Marilyn Manson, king of covers, made this song his own I believe. When I first heard it and then found out it was a cover and checked out the original I hated the original version of it by 'Soft Cell' is it? The guy just has an annoying voice and the song just sounds flat and boring to me.

I am new here, and have no idea how to post youtube links yet :banghead: ...but..

Off the top of my head, some really good cover versions are:

Metallica- Whiskey In The Jar

Oasis- Helter Skelter

Oasis- Cum On Feel The Noize

Fightstar- Fear Of The Dark ( I am a big Maiden fan and i prefer this to the original, which REALLY surprised me!)

Happy Mondays - Stayin Alive (Bee Gees Cover)

Avenged Sevenfold- Walk (Pantera Cover)

and the worst is

Ian Brown (former lead singer of the Stone Roses)- Billie Jean

I LOVE IAN BROWN....but this is seriously shit, if you havent heard this just check it out...Browny cannot "sing" at the best of times, but jeeeesus this is bad haha

Oh, so many fantastic covers listed here... but there are still a few that I personally think should be added to the list.

How many of you remember Tina Turner's hit "We Don't Need Another Hero" from Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome? Well, it's been given a kick in the ass by a group out of Finland comprised of four vocalists from some well-known names out on the other side of the pond (JP Leppaluouto from Charon, Marco Hietala from Nightwish, Jarkko Ahola from Terasbetoni and Tony Kakko from Sonata Arctica)

Next up, something a little more original- you thought four vocalists was something? Try FIVE. With only a drummer as the remaining member. No guitars. No bass. Only voice. This is Van Canto. And their cover of Manowar's "Kings Of Metal" is one for the books.

Now I've seen some Aerosmith on this thread. But how about the cover that Testament did of Aerosmith's "Nobody's Fault"?

Recently I've been listening a lot to one of the numerous covers of "Ain't no sunshine" by Bill Watts, the specific cover I've been listening to is from Jose Feliciano, singing this live version.

Love the original one, but this one has another feeling to it with the add of the jamming on the guitar he does.

Incredibly talented guy, very nice song as well.

Ah, where to start? First off, a song originally done by my favourite artist and covered by my 3rd favourite artist - All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. I actually think this is distinctly better than Bob Dylan's original (which, believe me, isn't an easy thing to say). I think that the song (in particular the lyrics) is better suited to Jimi's psychedelic sound than the folky original. A lyric like "there must be some way out of here, said the joker to the thief" seems more apt in a 60's psychedelic song.

Secondly, i'll put foward Superstar by Sonic Youth. Originally by The Carpenters, it is genuinely one of my favourite songs ever. It's soft, then picks up in the chorus. It's beautiful, tender and sung to perfection by Thurston Moore.

I think cover songs are great as long as they are better than the original or are very different to the original. There is no point in them if they don't add anything to the song.

I was there! I first heard Metallica perform The Misfits, "Die Die My Darling" there and I loved it. Its a little more upbeat and faster than the original and it really pumps me when I hear it. It may not be Metallica's "style" as it lacks a guitar solo and other aspects that are common to the band, but they really pulled it off well and it has great energy. A modern twist to a classic.

being fans of rock\metal music, im surprised no-one else listed these 2 songs:

a perfect circle- diary of a lovesong. (originally done by ozzy, & the cure). this song combines 2 great songs into a creepy dreamlike ballad.. i might be biased b\c i saw them play it live in austin, but its a great fucking cover.

tool- no quarter (originally done by led zeppelin). maynard has a knack for turning great songs into something dark. no quarter was dark anyway, but maynards voice adds a different distorted layer to a song already built with eerie guitar riffs.

honorable mentions:

coheed & cambria- the trooper (originally done by iron maiden)

incubus- lets go crazy (originally done by prince)

radiohead- wish you were here (originally done by pink floyd)

korn- one (originally done by metallica)

Wow, good topic for a thread. I didn't read all the posts here, I'm sorry. I'm sure I will over the next couple of days. It's so hard to narrow it down to just one or two, but here are some of my favorites:

"Lay Lady Lay" - by Ministry (originally by Bob Dylan)

Awesome. Heavy yet melodic, they did a great job with this song. Not to mention that the tone on the bass guitar sounds amazing.

"Cornflake Girl" - by Jawbox (originally by Tori Amos)

The hidden track on Jawbox's self-titled album. Awesome version, they really got this song to sound heavy with this arrangement. I love the rhythm.

"Enjoy the Silence" - by Failure (originally by Depeche Mode)

I saved the best for last. I always love it when an electronic song gets played on acoustic instruments, or vice versa. Failure does a FANTASTIC job of having three separate "acts" to the song. First with the acoustic-feel, then with the heavy-feel, finally an electronic-feel.
