Can someone please explain the Montreal Screwjob to me

Actually if u read Bret's book, Vince came to Bret in October and said that the money was no longer an issue, that he could pay him in full, and that he had no problem with him staying. Bret already talked to Bischoff though, and he got a great offer from WCW. Bret said he had to hear Vince tell him what his future storylines would be for him to stay. Vince laid it out, and Shawn was going to be the main guy, so Bret wanted to leave. He could have stayed, he chose to leave, so anything that happened was brought upon himself.

Your the only one so far to get this part right... Bret was told that he could stay and Vince wouldn't have a problem paying him after all.. Bret and Vince both left that meeting thinking that everything was cool and Bret was staying in WWF.. The day of Brets negotiating deadline WCW put in their offer. Bret wanted to be assured he was going to be the main event guy.. And Vince simply told him that he wasn't and it was clear that Vince was going to go with Shawn and Austin on top leading WWF in a new direction away from what Bret wanted and was comfortable with. Basically Vince offered Bret the supporting role that HBK played incredibly in the 00's.. He wasn't forced out.. he wasn't fired... BRET LEFT!!

Lot of the usual untruths here, such as:

-Bret had decided to go to WCW and jumpship
-Bret refused to lose the title to anyone
-Bret was going to take the WWF title to WCW
-Bret's contract was running out that night

Even the above stating he chose, Vince had been screwing him about for a long while and then laid out a year plan with the intention that he knew Bret wouldn't agree to it, not because Michaels was the top guy but because he laid out a plan where Bret lost repeatedly and his legacy destroyed.

All rubbish but what do you expect when the WWF have been brainwashing fans for years.

Here is a detailed timeline of events...

right the real story is that bret jobbed 2 shawn at wm 12 the following year they was ment 2 have a rematch with bret winning but shawn didnt want to job to bret so after he defeated pycho sid at the rumble he lied and told the company that he was injured so the rematch never took place so a few week b4 survivor series vince said he couldnt pay bret no more cos he never had enough money and actully told bret to leave for wcw also during time bret and shawn had a conversation where bret said that if the time came then he would happily job to shawn but shawn said that he wouldnt job to bret of couse this upset bret so a few days b4 survivor series bret and vince had a talk and bret said that he woundt really like losing in canada but said he didnt have to win so they both agreed that shawn would get bret in the sharpshooter while earl hebner was out cold only for bret to reverse it and hav shawn tap but while the hebner was out so shawn then would escape the hold and hit sweet chin music and cover bret and while the ref was gonna make the count bulldog and owen hart would run down and break the count thus thowing the match into chaos and the match goin to a no decition and the next nyt on raw bret was rather gonna lose the title to shawn or ken shamrock or just give up the title and say his goodbyes to the fan and make his peace with the american ones aswell and leave with his head hold high but shawn and hhh didnt like the idea when vince told them and vince was scared that bret would just take the title with him so vince shawn hhh and gerald brisco met in a hotel room the night b4 and set up the screwjob plan and a couple of hours b4 the event they told hebner what to do and the rest is history i'm not american or canadian i'm english and admit i'm a big hitman and hbk fan but thats how the real story went

Everyone is missing the point that Bret could have stayed, the money was back in place. He chose to leave cus he didn't want to be 2nd fiddle to Michaels and other rising stars, and he wanted the belt. The Meltzer article is all from Bret's POV with Bret's account of what happened. Also, we weren't in the locker room, we don't know for sure what Michaels said about refusing to return the favor to Bret, but one thing is for sure; when Vince called Bret and Shawn into his office after that locker room exchange a few days later, Michaels totally changed his tune and said he respected Bret and would return the favor. The plans Vince laid out gave Michaels more wins and more titles, and Bret didn't like that. Shawn was the young gun though, and it was his time to be on top. Shawn jobbed to Bret a ton of times when Bret was on the rise as IC champ and ran support on the card when Bret was the champ. We can say Michaels was a prick, which he was, but Bret wasn't willing to give the same thing back.
