Anime/Manga Discussion

I already know the anime went down the insanity hole and finishes this week.
I just read that they went a different route than the manga so I guess the manga is still worth reading. Currently reading it and it's been good.

Been meaning to watch/read FMA though. Which one should I do? Watch or read?

Yeah, the anime was only commissioned for one season, so it was expected. It's a shame too because it was very interesting.

Watch FMA: Brotherhood. It's my personal all-time favorite. It follows the manga, but cleans up a few details. It's also very good on the visual department and has a very well done English dubbing. You will not be disappointed. It's awesome.

Some thoughts on the Akame ga Kill manga. Do I even need to put spoiler tags in here!? :p
I'm almost all caught up with the Akame manga and wow, it's really awesome. Things have really escalated and I love how they fast forward some things so that they get right back into the action. Wave just punched the prime minister's son in the face, wooo! I like Wave and thought that he was misplaced as a Jaeger but I don't see him as a Jaeger for much longer. It's seems as if Wild Hunt are the new big bads. Wild Hunt vs. Jaegers/Night Raid. Could this happen!?

I do get a bit of a vibe of Fusion reborn from this trailer. The likes of Piccolo, Gohan and even Roshi mopping up Freiza's forces like the escapees from HELL, while Goku, Vegeta and likely Beerus square up to the reborn tyrant with Freiza in the roll of Janemba.

Could we see SSG Vegeta? SSG Gogeta? Or even a fifth form of Freiza?

'Revival of 'F' is the official title apparently.

That's the official poster and your prediction for a new form for Freeza looks fairly spot on based on the line 'Allow me to show you my further transformation...'

Pretty excited. Looks good. Now if only I could get round to watching Battle of the Gods first...

Akame ga Kill Chapter 55
This battle should be intense as hell. The snippet we got of Esdeath vs. Akame was awesome. Looks like things are just beginning with those two. How did Tatsumi get that strong that his strength rivals the commander's!? I hope the manga doesn't stay with the ongoing battles because there's a war to be fought. I want to see what becomes of that war then later on in the war, let these guys go at it.

30 episodes into FMA: Brotherhood
So things have been kind of slow but I finally got to see Mustang fight, which was awesome. I was surprised that Lust died that, I was sure that she would be around for a while but I guess that honor goes to Greed for the Homonculi. I'm a bit confused though since it seems that the higher ups know that Wrath is a Homonculi but aren't bothered by it? Very confused there. Everything else has been awesome. I just finished episode 30 and it was the episode where Liza Hawkeye is revealed to have a tattoo that seems to be of some value. I also don't think we've seen all of the Homonculi. I'm positive that there are more.

The feels when we finally get to see Alphonse's body though :( I'm sure the next 30 episodes are going to be great.

Overall thoughts on FMA:Brotherhood
First of all, wow. Wow is the word that I'll use to describe FMA:Brotherhood if anyone asks me to describe this anime in one word. So much went on. The battles were great, the feels, the comraderie, oh boy. There isn't a single thing I can fault. My favorite characters in order have got to be: Alphonse, Mustang, Edward, Winry, Teacher Izumi, and the Armstrong siblings.

The battle between the Armstrong siblings and Sloth was a favorite of mine. It was pretty brutal and it signalled Teacher Izumi's entry along with her husband. The Armstrong siblings were pretty hilarious in their house where they started fighting and their family was expecting it already so they just talked as if everything was normal :lmao:

From the homonculi, Pride was definitely one tough bastard and his story was a great one but my favorite was Greed. All he wanted were some friends and he got them. Every story from top to bottom was a tear jerker imo once you really think about it.

So glad that Alphonse got his body back but at the expense of Edward's alchemy. What a way to end the show. Hoenheim paid his dues and is with his wife now. Great ending. I think that if Alphonse didn't get his body back, I wouldn't have liked this anime as much as I did.

Overall, it was an awesome watch. First timers should definitely give this show a try. It has everything you want. It has humor, great story, likeable characters, everything. Go watch it now!

Damn, talk about dragging something good like if it was a WWE script. Sailor Moon used to have such colorful characters.

Watched Akira with a friend of mine about a week ago. It was incredible. Don't know why it took me so long to watch it.

No actually. I find it a lot harder to find time to sit down and watch something that's going to take me more than 20 minutes. I did however watch Eden of the East today, hence my entry into the thread.

It may be the most disappointing anime I have ever seen. So much potential in the first few episodes, then it falls into the same traps 90% of the stuff does. Exposition dumps, bad writing and a plot that goes so far off the rails it ends up on some completely different set of rails in a different country. Which is sad, because the opening three episodes were so fucking good.

I started Spice and Wolf. Seems quite promising. Umineko is a great series if you like murder/mystery. Though it becomes more about philosophy and logic as you get into it.

One probably shouldn't recommend me stuff, since odds on I'll hate it and that person will be sad.

I don't even have incredibly high demands (I mean obviously I do, since I hate everything). I just want something with decent writing, a plot I couldn't drive a bus through and no squeaky voiced little children (I gave up on Madoka Magica and Monster just before the conclusion because that started happening)

The genre is diverse enough that I am certain there must be stuff I would legitimately enjoy out there, I can just never find any of it. I can count the number of anime I recognise as being good on my fingers, and the number I have actually enjoyed on the fingers on a single hand.

For those interested.

Anime I have enjoyed past the age of 14 - and I'm counting any anime that has held my attention for its entire run time as being 'enjoyed'
FMA:B
Attack on Titan
Gankutsuou: Count of Monte cristo (ignoring the final episode - which didn't happen)
Death Note (the good arc)
Wolf's Rain (90% for the music)

Anime that is good but I didn't like
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo (technically I watched this to the end - still didn't like it)
Stein's Gate
Madoka Magica
Monster ('good' is stretching it a lot)

There must be other stuff out there worth watching, but it's not the stuff that shows up on lists of 'greatest anime ever'. Code Geass - shit. Mushishi - shit. Haruhi Suzamia - possibly shit, most likely just really not my thing. Evangelion - shit. Gurren Laggen - shit. This thing I just watched - shit.

I'm not ignorant enough to dismiss the entire medium, although there are major flaws with it that are hard to overcome, mostly the 20 minute run time which makes storytelling near impossible and forces overuse of tropes and exposition. Good stuff exists, and I'm sure far more of it that I acknowledge, but my tastes clearly differ so radically from the typical anime fan that it's impossible for me to find any of it. Right now I'd settle for any fuckin' shonen that isn't terminally stupid, but I've already watched attack on titan.

Maybe if anime isn't your thing maybe try reading manga or visual novels? That's what I started doing when most of the shonen series I was watching start churning out shit filler arcs.

Even I loved FMA:B, and I'm of the opinion and anime is typically shite.
I reviewed it. I could not stop praising it. Now I wanna watch it again.

The original FMA from 2003 is worth a try. It ends up being radically different to FMA:B.

Always found Attack On Titan a little overrated. It's great visually but the plot seems to go nowhere. Scratch that, it goes nowhere even in the manga.

Gurren Laggann is a cartoon. Like aimed at kids cartoon. Ever watch the Evangelion movies? The first two one's seemed good enough as opposed to the silliness of the anime.

I'd recommend Sword Art Online, the first 15 episodes are pretty solid stuff before it sinks with silliness as an action drama. Then SAO II has a very dramatic first 13 episodes.

Have you tried Hellsing Ultimate. Only 10 episodes and the run times on the episodes is generally longer closer to the hour mark.

So I'm gonna tackle on watching Bleach once more. Does anyone want to join me? I'll be watching the dubbed version. Also, I found a website where it tells me which episodes are filler so ill gladly skip over those. So yeah. Anyone want to watch with me? :D
