Album and Concert Review Thread

I got to go with Chinese Democracy as well. Better was a decent track but the lack of Slash was quite evident. They tried to cover it up with Axl just screaming. Ugh. Also Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight. What an abortion that was.

Guns n Roses-- Chinese Democracy. Ugh. Complete and total let down. I deleted that shit off of my computer after I bought if off of iTunes. Or was it somewhere else? can't remember. Oh well. Still, complete and utter failure. Completely no upside to me wasting my money on that shit. If I could, I would go the Billboard Top 100 and tell them to subtract one buy from their numbers. Waste of my time. I can't remember one song from that album that I liked more than "Meh. Not shit."

I don't see Chinese Democracy as a let down because Guns n' Roses aren't really the same band anymore, it took ages to come out, and I personally think everything they did after Appetite for Destruction was wank.

Zetigeist by The Smashing Pumpkins.

*sigh*
This album had years of build up. 2001 till 2006 of will they/won't they. Then Corgan takes the full page ad out in the Chicago Tribune talking about his intentions to reform the Pumpkins. Alt rock fans across the globe MTFO. Fans are split between old Pumpkins and new Pumpkins. How would they fare without Iha and D'arcy?
The website is created and the date is set, 07-07-07. Fans start thinking of the possibilities. A reinvention of Siamese Dream? An extra Mellon Collie chapter? Even Machina 3 would've been cool.

But no.
We don't get any of those. What do we get?
A bunch of over-produced- over-compensating, bland rock songs. We really expected more from you, Billy.

Have you ever waited anxiously for a band to release their next album, only to rush to the shops, pay top price for it and listen to it and said "Well... that was a waste of money"?

This thread is about albums that have let you down.

My answer would be Marilyn Manson's latest album, The High End of Low. I already heard a couple songs from it before it was released and I thought "Well, these songs are ok, he hasn't had any other albums I hated, I'll buy it" and then it turned out to be really boring and an effort to listen to the songs I hadn't heard. Better luck next time Manson. I may listen to it again sometime later, I might have to listen to it a few times before I start to like it.

Lets hear your stories.

Yeah High end of Low was pretty shit but the one before it was even worse (Eat me Drink me). And he had Twiggy back for the last one and I don't think he delivered. Pretty boring album, not shit but boring.

I would have to say The Used's album Lies for the Liars was pretty useless shit other than Bird and the Worm. I loved their previous albums and was really keen for their new one and when I heard it I had to force myself to get through it then never listened to it again, bar that one song.

I was impressed with Eminem's new album Relapse though, wasn't sure if it'd be any good but I'm pretty happy with it. Still listening to it heaps so that's a good sign.

Daughtry_leave_this_town.png

I bought this album this afternoon, the second album from American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry's band. I absolutely loved their debut album 'Daughtry', which in my opinion didn't have a bad song on it, honestly I thought it was flawless. Now, as for the new album. I've listened to it, a number of the songs several times... and it's another superb effort, absolutely love it. What I love about both albums is that pretty much every song has a real meaning and is mostly based around love (which I tend to believe is a rare thing in a rock album)

Here's the track list:

You Don't Belong
No Surprise

Everytime You Turn Around
Life After You
What I Meant To Say
Open Up Your Eyes
September
Ghost Of Me
Learn My Lesson
Supernatural
Tennessee Line
Call Your Name
Get Me Through

The bolded songs are currently my favourite from the album.

Anyone else got this album or plan on getting it?

Having been a fan of the first album, funnily enough I brought it cause I heard it over the tannoy of a local supermarket and wanted a copy, great decision there. I will get this new album as you've said this appears to be another great one in the set. Might youtube some tracks and see how they're doing this time around, but if going by the first album, it can only be bound to be good :)

If I had to be honest, I'd go with 21st Century Breakdown by Green Day. After providing the brilliance of American Idiot this one was quite a let down. It felt mostly ballard based, I think I've only listened to it once fully through and not gone back to it. But I think after hearing American Idiot, you'd expect so much to come out after, just a pity really. Might re-listen to it to give it another chance, but I'm not feeling overly optimistic.

Another one, which I wouldn't call a complete let down, but just doesn't impress me is Life on Display by Puddle of Mudd. After a great debut album of Come Clean the follow up wasn't as great, I'll continue to listen all the songs from the first albums, but the second lacks that something extra. Haven't heard much of the third, but was abit more promising.

I feel the exact opposite. I hated American Idiot. It was a concept album different from their normal sound, and I really didn't like it. I love 21st Century Breakdown, however. It is the first Green Day album I have ever owned, and I love it.

As for the topic, I have to go with Minutes to Midnight by Linkin Park. I loved all of their previous stuff. Hybrid Theory and Meteora were great, and Collision Course with Jay-Z was incredible. Then they release the steaming pile of shit that was MtM. Save for 2 or 3 songs, they totally abandoned their song and the change was much, much worse. I challenge anyone who liked the old Linkin Park to listen to Lying From You on Meteora and tell me that What I've Done from MtM was an improvement.

Bob Dylan's new album Together Through Life was a bit of a letdown for me personally. I heard nothing but great things about it. Not as good as the reviews for Modern Times, which I loved, but very good things.

So, I finally decide to download it (legally of course ;)) and put it on my iPod. I start to listen to it...and I'm just not into it. At all. It sounds like Dylan's 80s work, and everyone knows that his 80s work was the absolute lowest point in his career. I love country (REAL country music, the kind that died along with Johnny Cash) and bluegrass, but the way he utilizes them just doesn't gel with his voice or his style on this album. It's still worth a few listens simply because it's Dylan, but overall I wasn't impressed. Modern Times was infinitely superior.

Dude i have to agree with you Minutes To Midnight was pure shit. It was suppose to be the best yet put out by LP. The interviews were all this album is good. I thought to myself dam this is gonna be insane cause Meteora was good. I listened to that album alone every night for 2 months after its release, so i thought well this new album i am gonna really like. day of release i go get the album pop it in and just go WTF is this crap. I listened to a few songs and said screw this album. Couple months later i am riding around with my cousin and she goes you heard the new LP i was like yeah it sucks. She pops the cd in a we listen to the whole thing, still sucked ass.

Picked it up off of iTunes earlier this week.

Was pleasantly surprised considering a lot of bands sophomore albums can be a letdown, but this one delivers just as well as the first.

Honestly, I had never heard a single track from the album until I bought it, unlike with "Daughtry". By the time I picked up the first album, "It's Not Over" and "Home" were being played all over the place.

Great follow up effort from the best American Idol contestant ever IMO.

My favorite tracks right now are "Learn My Lesson" and "September".

Finally got the album today, no idea why my local store didn't have it, so had to get it out of town.

Simply put, I love it. This is exactly what made me like Daughtry in the first place. They have their own sound and it works, this is a great follow up piece by Daughtry. I think what I'd like to see now for their third outing (when it comes) is more upbeat tunes like What I Want from the first album. I think they can do it right. But this is a great album nonetheless.

Btw, did you know Chad Kroeger wrote some of the songs for this album?

Favourite tracks:
You Don't Believe
Life After You
What I Meant to Say
September
Ghost of Me
Supernatural

Giving it some time for the other tracks to grow, but they're good!

I burned the cd off of youtube.

Only listened to a few songs, but they are all good, No Surprise and Call Your Name are both great!

I do like the first album better though, if by just a tad.

I have to say I thought the Relapse album would be a decent album, but not great, however I love it, I personally think it's his best album, definitely his more heartfelt album. I like pretty much every song on it, however my favorite is Beautiful, I love that song, I feel that song. Underground is also great, so is 3a.m. and My Mom. Those are by far the best on the album. I just can't get over Beautiful though, and the video is really actually a deep video, that normally isn't Eminem, then again neither is a song like Beautiful. All in all I would give this album a 8 out of 10.

Thriller, you know I look up to you, but this I must disagree with a little bit. I'm not going to say that MtM was completely shit. It grew on me after I had listened to it for a while. It is definitely not as great as Meteora or Hybrid Theory, I would never say it is even close, but it is a different sound. Not a better sound, but different. Unless they go back to that sound they had, nothing they do will ever be as good as Hybrid Theory or Meteora. What I've Done doesn't compare to anything on Meteora, Thriller lol.

Now for my let down album. The album that got me listening to The Offspring, Splinter. Except for maybe 4 or 5 songs, the album was a complete let down compared to their other albums. It was a short album, 12 songs was the length, so you might say that 4 or 5 would be a good thing. The album had a whole bunch of potential to be really good, but it just didn't work out that well. Big potential for awesome album, if they worked on it a little more, but it was a big let down save for some songs.

Album: The 3rd World
Artist: Immortal Technique [/
CENTER]

Track Listing:
1) "Death March"
2) "That's What It Is"
3) "Golpe De Estado" feat. Temperamento y Veneno
4) "Harlem Renaissance"
5) "Lick Shot" ft Crooked I & Chino XL
6) "Apocrypha"
7) "The 3rd World"
8) "Hollywood Driveby" ft PsycoRealm & Sick Symphonies
9) "Reverse Pimpology" ft Mojo
10) "Open Your Eyes"
11) "Payback" feat Diabolic & Ras Kass
12) "Adios Uncle Tom" (skit)
13) "Stronghold Grip" ft Poison Pen & Swave Sevah
14) "Mistakes"
15) "Parole" (Evil Genius Mix)
16) "Crimes of the Heart" ft Maya Azucena

Let's get straight down to it. Immortal Technique is amazing. His politically charged lyrics and raw emotion behind his lyrics are what make him absolutely fire and amazing to listen to. The views in his raps focus alot on racial issues, political problems, poverty, religion, social class. If you're expecting some pop-rap about hoes, cars, and how much money he spent on that bottle of Cristal I recommend you stop reading now. Immortal Technique has indeed been offered a record deal but turned it down because the record companies make more money then the actual artists do.
This 31 year-old from Harlem, New York describes himself as a socialist guerrilla. This whole album is real deep, the beats are really smooth and it's on definite banger status. I can't really criticize the album other than it's too short. It's hard for me to pick a favorite track off the album but if I had to i'd pick "Crimes of the Heart" - ft. Maya Azcucena. Definitely my favorite song as of now. IT's flow is sick, listen to the lyrics, the man is a urban poet. Maya's voice is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. She has the hook on lock. Buy. This. Album. Support one of the most underrated, talented, greatest rappers alive right now. . I definitely recommend this album for anyone looking for REAL rap. Not this "Kiss Me Thru The Phone" bullshit that people label as rap.

Album: 127 Rose Avenue
Artist: Hank Williams Jr.

Track listing:
1. "Farm Song"
2. "Red, White & Pink Slip Blues"
3. "High Maintenance Woman"
4. "Mighty Oak Trees"
5. "Forged By Fire"
6. "Last Driftin' Cowboy"
7. "127 Rose Avenue"
8. "All the Roads"
9. "Sounds Like Justice"
10. "Long Gone Lonesome Blues"
11. "Gulf Shore Road"

Chances are if you grew up in the South, and you grew up listening to classic rock, country, whatever, you know who Hank Williams is. This is the latest album from the legendary hellraiser himself Hank Williams Jr. It's a great blend of blues, rock, bluegrass, and country. Ol' Bocephus is getting up there in age, 60 years old. He's still got it though, this album is one you can put on, sit back, relax and listen to the whole way through. I throughly enjoyed it, Hank's a damn good singer even though he's been around forever. Chances are you've heard one of his songs no matter who you are or where you're from. You've watched Monday Night Football right? The lyrics are really cool, there's some really good songs on here, touching songs, funny songs, party songs, whichever you want, this album has it. For example, one of my favorite tracks off the album.
It's a album you definitely wanna pick-up if you're into country or like.. anything of the sort. Check it out.

Album: "Life Left To Go"
Artist: SafetySuit

01. Someone Like You
02. Apology
03. Find a Way
04. Stay
05. Something I Said
06. Anywhere but Here
07. Down
08. The Moment
09. Annie
10. What If
11. Gone Away
12. Life Left to Go

Most likely the first thing you'll notice about this review is how the album cover resembles Nirvana's "Nevermind" album cover. This band however, sounds nothing like Nirvana. The band from Tulsa, Oklahoma, SafetySuit is out with their debut album. It was released in 2008 but the band didn't come to knowledge of myself til about a couple months ago with the single "Stay" The music video got a lot of play on VH1's morning music videos, as I saw it every morning, sometimes more than one. The song also topped VH1's Top 20 Countdown at #1. The band is a alternative rock band, the music off this album is more slow paced, although there is a few songs that are pretty cool and can get your head nodding. A lot, most actually is lovey type songs, about females or whatever else. It's a chill album in my humble opinion. I've listened to it a couple times, it's not bad for a debut album. But it's not gonna be a HUGE mega-hit or anything. My favorite song off the album is track #9. "Annie" I'll post the song at the bottom of the review. My final take is if you want a pretty simple alt. rock album that doesn't offer a lot of thrill but doesn't lack, check it out.

"Annie" - SafetySuit

I got to go to Pointfest in St. Louis Sunday and I most say it was pretty good. It was 35 bands for 35 bucks and it was an all day event. I got there later in the day so I got to see about half the bands.

All That Remains - This was pretty crazy. The singing wasn't the best, but the way they acted during the concert made up for it big time.

Trapt - I was suprised when I saw them. Before it I only new one song, Headstrong. Not only did i like every song I heard, but they sang them perfectly. I still don't understand how they only have one song that i hear on the radio.

Street Sweeper Social Club - Had no idea who they were so didn't listen to them at first, but then I learned that Tom Morello was the guitarist and if you know who that is; then, you know he automaticaly made it good music.

Hollywood Undead - If you combine the the crazyness( don't even know if that is a word ) of All That Remains and how good Trapt sounded you get Hollywood Undead. All i can say is if you like Hollywood Undead you got to see them live.

Atreyu - Was pissed because i missed half of the concert ( stupid food lines) but, still got to hear Becoming The Bull and Falling Down. They looked and sounded pretty good to me and I enjoyed the two :disappointed: songs I heard.

Chevelle - I was disappointed by them. They weren't bad but they weren't as good as any of the other bands. They didn't sound very good, execpt for I Get It, and there wasn't much show manship.

Shinedown - One word can describe their performance...unbelievable. They were fantastic, they sounded great, they had great show manship, and and really got the crowd involved. Shinedown alone was worth the 35 bucks. Everytime I go to a concert I'll have to judge it on a scale of how good was it compared to Shinedown.

I've seen a few concerts in the past few years:

Lamb of God - Good show, not headlining. Crowd was fairly into them, but wasn't really who I went to see so I didn't pay much attention the the music.

Devildriver - Same as Lamb of God

Soilwork - Again, good show, some good songs. I thought they did better than LoG and Devildriver.

Killswitch Engage - Awesome show. They always seem to have plenty of energy and want their fans to have a good time. Crowd was eating them up.

Atreyu - Another great show. They crowd was pumped, and was still the largest pit I've seen. They really seem to put on a great show. I recommend seeing them.

Bullet For My Valentine - Good show, could have been better.

Avenged Sevenfold - Great show. Pyro, and the crowd was very into them as well. Another recommended show to see.

Staind and Seether - I keep getting these two mixed up, but they both did very well with the crowd. Both did plenty of songs for not headlining.

Papa Roach - Great show, worked the crowd. Same as everyone else said about them.

Lacuna Coil - Decent show for not being too big at the time. Great for people that like to understand what they are singing.

Killswitch Engage - Yet another great perfomance. Seen them three times total and they always perform for their fans.

Disturbed - Amazing. Sounded fantastic and worked the crowd tremendously. I had the privilige of seeing them in a blizzard and they still performed. True dedication to the fans. A must see band.

I also got to work at the Mayhem festival when it came to town doing crowd control. I was right next to the small stages catching the body surfer's. Great expirience, but didn't really get to watch the bands much. I saw a little of the Marilyn Manson part, and he seemed to put on a pretty good show.

Dark Horse Tour 09'...

At the Gorge Ampitheater 8/29/09

Man what a wicked awesome concert. Saving Able opened, played a few of their songs, they were only on for about 35-40 minutes, not to long, but they only have on CD too, so what can you expect? However they rocked the stage, the crowd was really into it.

Papa Roach then took the stage and man did they ever rag on Paris Hilton, calling her a talentless twat, c**t among other things and said people like her are what is ruining the music scene. However they rocked and rocked hard, starting off with the Raw theme, MTFO moment, then played past and present songs. They played about 50-60 minutes, not bad at all, had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hands.

Hinder then took the stage and outshined Papa Roach and Saving Abel. My God these guys can rock the stage. They put on one hell of a show, had the crowd screaming and nearly rioting. It was awesome to behold. I knew they were good, but in concert they are fantastic.

Then it was time for the main event. Nickelback hit the stage and god damn if the crowd didn't explode. It was insane. Everyone was on their feet the whole time they were on the stage. They had pyro, water cannons, t-shirt cannons, they were throwing beer to the crowd. Then not only rocked their songs hardcore, they also played some AC/DC with Hinder's lead singer, pulled out some Garth Brooks, and even a Metallica guitar riff or two. Good God these guys put on one of the best concerts I have ever seen. It was amazing. There drummer, man he is insanely good, he went on a 7-10 minute drum solo that was the best I have heard in a very long time. Then of course they did an encore and those who were leaving already came running back. They ended up playing close to two hours.

All in all one of the best concerts I have been too. Amazing, all the bands were on top form and rocked the crowd hard. A few fights, lots of pot smocking, lots of drinking, titty flashing, even a couple fucking right in the middle of the crowd. Intense.

10/10

Artist: Colin Munroe
Album: "Colin Munroe is the Unsung Hero"

Track Listing: [off Wikipedia]
1. The Unsung Hero (feat. Everybody)
2. Piano Lessons (feat. Joell Ortiz)
3. Will I Stay (feat. Wale and Dallas Austin)
4. One More Chance (feat. Mickey Factz)
5. As Much As You (feat. Blaqstarr)
6. Fever (REMIX)
7. Cannon Ball (feat. Drake)
8. Who Killed Davey Moore? (REMIX) (Bob Dylan REVOX)
9. Last Cause
10. Brick in the Wall (feat. Skyzoo)
11. To Find a Hero (feat. Novel)
12. Break Off (feat. Saukrates and Black Milk)
13. Sunday Bloody Sunday (U2 cover)
14. What the Young Man Says (feat. Izza Kizza and MIMS)

This mixtape was released by 29 year old artist Colin Munroe in December 2008. He offers it for free download. The album is catchy. Definitely, definitely catchy. With a huge melting pot of different beats and kind of genres. We have rap, we have pop, a bit of country, and a little rock. I enjoyed this album alot. I've listened to it straight through numerous times. With guests such as Drake, MIMS, Novel, Wale, and Joell Ortiz, it's not a star studded album like most that came out around that time was, but it's a solid release nonetheless. I love the beats that are on here, they're smooth and real calm and chill. They get your feet tapping and make you wanna listen to the song again. He's a pretty good singer, his voice has this soulful feeling to it, he gets you into the track, although he does have a little bit of popsinger/rapper flavor to him. It's hard for me to pick a favorite track, it honestly is because I like the whole album. If I absolutely have to it'd be "Piano Lessons" feat. Joell Ortiz. The piano in the background along with the beat laid down by Black Milk.. outstanding. Joell does his thing too, he lays down a solid verse. I say you definitely download this mixtape. It's free, plus it's really great.. all facets. 10/10!

Artist: Jay-Z
Album: The Blueprint III

Track Listing:
1) "What We Talkin' About" ft. Luke Steele
2) "Thank You"
3) "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)"
4) "Run This Town" ft. Kanye West and Rihanna
5) "Empire State of Mind" ft. Alicia Keys
6) "Real As It Gets" ft Young Jeezy
7) "On To the Next One" ft. Swizz Beatz
8) "Off That" ft. Drake
9) "A Star is Born" ft. J. Cole
10) "Venus vs. Mars"
11) "Already Home" ft. Kid Cudi
12) "Hate" ft. Kanye West
13) "Reminder"
14) "So Ambitious" ft. Pharrell
15) "Young Forever" ft. Mr. Hudson

& i'm back again. This thread is dead, but I like posting here. So.. Jay-Z's newest release, The Blueprint III. What to say about it? I just finished listening to it, all the way through. I think it's one of those albums that was a tad bit overhyped. It's good, it really is. He definitely brought a more modern style to this album, like flow wise, beat wise. Blueprint III isn't all great. The track Venus vs Mars is pretty bad. Young Forever is incredibly corny. & So Ambitious isn't too hot either. The beats are definitely solid, some are catchy and get your head bobbing. Like I said before, it's a definite modern feel to it. If you're looking for old-school Jay-Z or you don't like the newer style of him.. well, he put it best in "On to the Next One"

"Hov on the that new shit, *****s like how come?
*****s want my old shit, Buy my old album
*****s stuck with stupid, I Gotta keep it moving
*****s make the same shit, Me I make the blueprint "

Still, while the album does have some bad tracks, it outshines them with the good. The guests in the songs are on point for the most part. Rihanna and Kanye on "Run This Town" completely dominate the track. It's Jay-Z, he still has it. I enjoyed listening to the whole CD, it's definitely a banger. I think my favorite track is a tie with Run This Town and On to the Next One, so i'll be posting both. Thanks for reading.

4) "Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story" ft R.A the Rugged Man
5) "A Blood Red Path"
6) "When All Light Dies"
7) "Serenity in Murder"
8) "Pariah Demise (Interlude)"
9) "Heavy Metal Kings" ft Ill Bill
10) "Shadow Business" ft Crypt the Warchild
11) "Triumph & Agony (Interlude)"
12) "Razorblade Salvation"
13) "Outlive the War" ft Sean Price & Block McCloud
14) "Gutta Music" ft Reef the Lost Cauze & Chief Kamachi

16) "Black Winter Day"
17) "Heavy Metal Kings (Terror Remix)" ft Ill Bill & Terror
18) "Pretty Little ****es" ft Outerspace
19) "Blitz Inc." ft King Syze & Esoteric

I love this album. I'm throwing this out there right now. I fucking love this whole album. It's insane! The album is nearly flawless. Everything about it is greatness. The samples, are unique, creative, set the mood for the tracks. The lyrics, oh the lyrics.. they are more complex than your average rap album. Vinnie Paz hits every track full force and his rugged voice just delivers. The lyrics are intelligent, they're not dumbed down like most rap that's out now. This is definitely not your little sister's album, there's no dance tracks on here, there's no bitches and hoes and money here. This is real. From Track #1 to track number #19. The standout song on this album without a shadow of a doubt is "Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story" This song will give you chills, without a doubt. It'll leave you dumbfounded at the amount of emotion put into this track. R.A The Rugged Man's verse is breathtaking, it recounts his father's real life experiences in Vietnam. It's a beautiful, yet creepy track. It's just so well delivered. The CD is a few years old, being released in 2006. But that's not really relevant. I HIGHLY recommend this album. If you don't even get the album, at least listen to the song I post below. Check out Razorblade Salvation too, another solid track in my opinion.
