So I went to see Coldplay, and then the week after that, I went to Sound Relief.
Coldplay - I thought that they were great live. Chris's singing was great, they played all their hits, they did a piano version of "The Hardest Part" which I think was the highlight of the light. They even came up into the crowd, I was literally about 5 metres away from them, and they performed Green Eyes acoustically and also another acoustic song with their drummer Will Champion singing instead of Chris. There wasn't a bad moment during the whole concert, you could see that everyone was right into it, the crowd was even louder than Chris at one point and you couldn't even here him. It was a great show.
Sound Relief - The one thing wrong witht his concert was that the sound quality was pretty crap. It would've been hard to set it up for everyone in the MCG, and it got better as it got later, but it was still really annoying. Anyway, onto the bands.
Jet - These guys were ok, but they were great for an opening act. Everyone got on their feet for Are You Gonna Be My Girl and a couple of other songs whose names escape me. However, I couldn't see them headlining a show. They didn't seem to haveenough energy for the crowd to get into them.
Gabriella Cilmi - People knew 2 songs, Don't Want To Go To Bed Now and Sweet About Me. And they still didn't care. Pretty much, she was crap and I didn't pay much attention to her after about a minute.
Kings Of Leon - I was actually really disappointed by these guys. They were hyped up so much, but when they came on they didn't exactly excite. I think they're more suited to a more intimate concert, not one playing to a whole stadium, no matter what other people say. They played Use Somebody, which was good, however I think a lot of people were disappointed that they didn't play Sex On Fire. They said they wouldn't play it because the show was helping the bushfires, but during the breaks between bands they played the song while putting up pictures of the bushfires. Ah well, can't have everything.
Paul Kelly - Paul Kelly is a great musician. Who else would have the guts to sing the last song by himself, with no one else playing and not even Paul himself playing? Leaps And Bounds was a standout song for him, everyone erupted when he sang "to the MCG". Paul Kelly was I think one of the best acts at Sound Relief.
Augie March - I hardly knew these guys, but I was surprised when I liked what I heard. I think that right now the crowd switched off for a while. I really liked Augie March's performance, but I don't think i'll get into them. They were good for a once off listen.
Bliss N Eso - I'll say right now, I don't like most hip hop. I did not like these guys. They tried to get the crowd involved. Some people were into it, others weren't. Personal taste. But I couldn't care less about them. Next.
Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson - Ok, when these guys came on, i'm pretty sure the crowd went "Screw this" and just stopped listenin, went to get some food, went for a piss break, the usual. I know I did. Next.
Liam Finn - I actually didn't hear much from this guy, so I can't really judge him. I only got to hear the last song, which was where Crowded House came out
D) and they played Better Be Home Soon. The place was electric, they did a great job with that song, and getting Crowded House to come and play.
Wolfmother - This is where the band's started getting good. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't play Mind's Eye, but they made up for it with their setlist. They tore the house down, and the crowd went even crazier when they started to play Joker And The Thief. They started out with Dimension, and I think the way they played made people get into it even if they didn't know the song. Wolfmother are plain and simple a great live band.
Here we switched over to Sydney for a bit and we saw Coldplay and John Farnham singing You're The Voice, the place went off, and everyone sang alng to that. It was great to see one of my favourite band's performing with an Aussie legend, singing a classic Aussie song.
Split Enz - I See Red was easily the best song by these guys, although all the songs they did were great. It was good to see these guys live and although I knew only about 2 songs by them, it was still a great performance by them.
Hunters And Collectors - The crowd went fucking crazy when they heard Holy Grail, and so did I. That song is a fucking classic, and it's almost like an Australian anthem. Hunters and Collectors were a great band that eveyrbody got into, whether they played Do You See What I See or Throw Your Arms Around Me.
Midnight Oil - The best part of the whole show was Peter Garret dancing.
That guy is on drugs, and so was a guy just below us, who was dancing the whole time while Oil was playing. Funniest thing ever. Midnight Oil were the perfect band to close off what had been a great show, playing their hits like Beds Are Burning and Power and the Passion. Everybody knew these songs, and the crowd sang along to everyone of them. They were probably the best band i've seen live.
