2012 Presidential Candidate Debate

Its really not though. 3 of the top 5 oil producing nations are in North America (if you include Mexico)

Yeah but what would happen if you take away the foreign oil? We'd be closer to independence, but gas would likely cost something like 7 bucks a gallon.

You gotta love election season if you believe what the candidates have to say. Romney seems to have the perfect plan, and if we elect him there will be peace on earth and more money than we know how to spend!

Eliminate the Bush tax cuts on the rich
Extend the Bush tax cuts on the middle class
End the two wars

I'd love to see the deficit after about 10 years of that.

I know it's not a popular opinion, but the United States owns ~630,000 sq. miles of relatively untouched land in Alaska... There's already a huge lumber production up there, but there's so much room for oil expansion and developing other resources. I get wanting to preserve nature and all that, but that kind of went out the window when the earth decided to keep populating beyond its control.

What Obama says sums up the difference between Dems vs. GOP:

There are some things that just because you can cut them doesn't mean you should.

Interesting that so many people think Romney is looking weak in this debate. Funny because people in Republican-biased forums are probably saying the exact opposite. I agree with what Obama is saying, and I can't stand Romney, but he's looking real good in this debate.

It would still look bad, especially once we get involved in Iran. The scope of the problem isn't something that can be solved just by the rich.

I'd give an edge to Obama so far but it's by no means a rout.

Doesn't raising taxes by percent on those with more money seem like a slightly... communist-esk idea? Explain to me why Person A should have to pay a higher % of his income than Person B, just because he makes more on average. How does that reward growth and prosperity among the upper class? Why would I want to strive, maybe as a person opening his own business, to make a ton of money if it's just going to be taxed away on a higher percentage?

I wouldn't quite say that ROmney's looking weak in the debate right now, but he is coming across like an asshole and a bit scatterbrained.

Not talking about raising them. I'm talking about letting the Bush tax cuts expire and having the rates go back to the Clinton rates when the economy went nuts.

I think he's taking notes.

He is, but it looks bad.

I agree that neither of these guys is the clear cut winner here, or at least not yet. Obama and Romney have both had moments where they looked good, and while nobody has looked truly bad yet, there have been moments where they've stumbled.

But I still can't help but feel like everything Romney says is pandering lies.

This, I agree with. I also wasn't talking about that, I just know it's a popular opinion to raise taxes for the rich. I don't know that I think its fair.

When people say raise taxes, that's what they're talking about most of the time: letting the cuts expire.

Also keep in mind we're not talking about doubling them. WE're talking about going from like (numbers made up) 33% to 38%. That's hardly going through the roof as they're going up 5% over what you're paying beforehand.

Also, when you're making millions a year, I really don't want to hear you complain about paying a few thousand extra a year. If you're putting seven figures in the bank, I don't want to hear you complain when you have people like my family who are lucky to make 10% of that and pay roughly the same or even more of a percentage in taxes.
