WWE Saturday Morning Slam

The Talon

Occasional Pre-Show
WWE is teaming up with Saban Brands to bring a new half-hour show known as WWE Saturday Morning Slam. SMS will premiere on The CW's new 5-hour Saturday morning block known as Vortexx on August 25th, everywhere nationwide. The new will have a weekly match, profiles of WWE superstars and backstage action. The show was created due to Saban's notice of the high sales of the WWE Mattel toys & the statics that show that 22% percent of WWE's audience is made up of boys under 12. It is unknown for now what time the show will air in, but Vortexx airs from 7 am to noon.

I think it will be somewhere between 10:00-11:30. WWE would most likely consider that the highest amount of viewers they could achieve would be somewhere around that timeslot.

I was about to ask if anybody knew the timeslot.

Is anybody here old enough to remember watching WWF Superstars every Saturday morning? That was during the time when they were using very over the top gimmicks like clowns, garbage men, hockey players, etc to garner interest from kids. Superstars never really had any noteworthy matches, just squashes... but as a child I can definitely say that it served it's purpose and hooked me.

My pops got me into wrestling too, but waking up and watching Power Rangers and Spider-Man and X-Men and then WWF Superstars every Saturday is my effin' childhood. If they're trying to do something like that, fine by me.

They realize that this show probably won't entertain older fans, but do you see the shows kids watch? They suck. Kids are dumb and easily entertained. A Rey Mysterio squash over Curt Hawkins would make a 7 year old's day.

Speaking of Saturday Morning, any chance we have anybody here that remembers WMAC Masters? lmao!

I remember watching Saturday and Sunday morning wrestling as a kid in the late 80's early 90's. It's how i got my fix. I wouldn't be into a show like that now as an adult, but I just had a child of my own and I hope it sticks around so I can watch it with her in the future. It's aimed at kids and I think for that reason it will do well.

I think it is great for WWE. Saturday mornings is when I got hooked on wrestling. Not every degenerate parent allows their little kids to stay up until 11:05 on Monday nights so this is a nice alternative to rope in the kids early (like smoking). Just keep the vanilla midgets off the screen and the kids will get hooked. They don't want to watch guys that look like their fathers fight.

Nice thread Talon but next time ask a question or make a point. NYU will not tolerate such behavior.

If the wwe really wanted to do something for the kids they could make a cartoon wrestling show like mucha lucha now when i was a kid that show was awesome. I know i wont watch their saturday morning show for 1 little match but i think a cartoon wrestling show would be great for kids.

I think this is a good idea. If they have an actual kids show, maybe they'll start putting out edgier content on RAW and SmackDown and let the Saturday Morning Show be "the kids' show". Not saying they'll go TV-14, but maybe they'll start pushing the PG boundaries.

Normally, I'd call this another example of WWE over-saturating the market with their product; falling prey to the idea that more is better.

In this case, however, they're aiming for an entirely different audience: kids who aren't up late enough to watch Raw. I doubt I'll ever see the show, as I don't watch TV on Saturday mornings. For the children who do, WWE has a new way to indoctrinate them into the habit of learning about the wonders of pro wrestling.

It will take years for the results to shake out, but this might prove to be Vince McMahon's greatest move of all...........or, it will go the way of the Saturday morning WWF cartoons, in which we watched the adventures of animated versions of Hulk Hogan, Roddy Piper and Wendy Richter cavorting across our TV screens.

GI Joe - Transformers - WWF Superstars, screw The Miz my childhood was Awesome.

This is good news if you're a kid, you get to get a recap show plus a match and you know what that means, more fans. If you're a parent you get to spend some time watching WWE with your kids, you probably missed something from RAW or Smackdown take this opportunity to catch up not everyone has cable or internet and this is on free tv.

I know the smarks are hating this because they believe it's more catering to the kiddies instead of giving them blood, swearing and boobs, that's why I've never met a "smart mark" just "stupid marks" because you have to be stupid to not see the big picture in this and if you're a grown up who remembers the 80's-90's and you know the formula they are pulling with this yet you still hate you're really stupid.

Saturday morning cartoons + wrestling = Awesome.

WWF Superstars on Saturdays was when I got hooked as well, over here in Ireland we used to get Superstars on Sky and a WCW package show on UTV in the afternoon. Brilliant childhood watching those at mine or my friends house and acting out the moves

Also, for this show to be a success, WWE would have to take this extremely seriously. They couldn't afford to just have a couple of random jobbers come out each week & not care like they did for Superstars. If they had matches like Rey Mysterio vs Daniel Bryan or Randy Orton vs Dolph Ziggler, the show would be a hit for kids.

Saturday mornings cartoons + wrestling = my childhood too. This was pre Vince WWF (in Australia) in the 1970s, but it worked. Andre, Ox Baker, Bulldog Brower were the larger than life characters that got me hooked. 36 years later I'm still watching, and the bonus is I have Wacky Races etc on DVD to show my daughter instead of the crap they have on now lol. Although Bubble Guppies is kinda cool lol.

I'm an 80's child too, and my grandpa got me hooked on Superstars. I remember watching Sean Mooney (there's a blast from the past!) sitting in some newsroom with a lot of monitors in the background, reporting all of the wrestling news fit to report. I also watched Wrestling Challenge, anyone remember that one?

I think this is great for the WWE. As long as they show a match that we haven't seen on any of the other shows, it will be fine. I'd get a kick out of seeing some old school wrestler promos too. You know, where the wrestler was backstage alone or with their manager, standing in front of a green screen, talking about their current feud or whatever was eating at them. On TV, you would see some cheesy logo with the wrestler's name behind them. I remember watching some of the Warrior's old promos, laughing my ass off at how crazy he was. Great memories.

Anyway, I'll definitely check out the first few episodes at the very least.

Wasn't his point so that we could discuss the show... just like we have been? Why does a successful thread topic warrant reprimand? Assuming your rules are to weed out the non-serious posters, that little comment seemed counter productive.

Wow to the Mooney reference. I remember thinking how high tech that room looked... now I realize I think he was just sitting in the production truch or something. Haha. WWF probably didn't even wanna pay for a set and told Sean "Uh... just go sit over there, and don't touch anything."

The Saturday morning show is a great idea, it makes wrestling accessible to children and will create more regular fans. Most wrestling fans started watching as kids, and kids are more likely to suspend their disbelief in order to sit back and enjoy the ride of wrestling. Brodus Clay, Sin Cara, Sheamus, John Cena and Rey Mysterio are all kid friendly stars who can carry the show. Some younger talents may find TV time on this new show, allowing them to get over as a babyface or heel and eventually make it onto Raw or Smackdown.

If they really want to rake in the cash, they should make a cartoon show starring John Cena. Sort of like "ProStars". I remember waking up every Saturday morning just to watch it, even though I knew the actual athletes didn't do the voices.

Yes, I remember when Superstars used to be on Saturday mornings. In my area (NY/NJ metro) back in the 80's, we had 3 WWF shows (1 in the monring, 1 in the afternoon, 1 late-night), AWA, JCP/WCW, GLOW and Pro Wrestling This Week (a magazine show hosted by Gordon Solie) - and that was on the regular channels (I didn't have cable then). With the possible exception of the Monday Night Wars/Attitude Era, it was the best time to be a wrestling fan.

Keep in mind, back then wrestling shows were basically a 1-hour infomercial to get people to come to the matches or buy the pay-per-view.

Hopefully they'll have an "old school" segment where they teach kids about the great wrestlers and feuds from the past.

Explanations about who the Hulkster, Flair or SCSA was, and their best moments. It's imperative that kids learn the heritage of this great artform, as they embark on a lifetime of fandom.

I became a wrestling fan by watching wrestling on saturday mornings as a kid. Its about time they are doing this. They can probably gain some new young fans.

I've wondered for a while why the WWE isn't on a weekend morning. Like cigarettes, you try to get them hooked while they're young so they'll be a customer for life. I know I started by watching WWE Action Zone.

It's been done before, but it's about damned time it was done again.

I don't think this Saturday morning kids wrestling show will ever realy appeal to me, but its definitely a good thing for the younger fanbase, as it will be aired at a time in the middle of all their other shows, so I would expect it would get high viewing figures and get the kids interested in WWE at a young age. This is very smart because kids = money.

They will want the action figures, the games, the t-shirts etc, and therefore WWE could make a lot of money from this. Plus, its great for the kids whose parents won't let them stay up late to watch Raw, and that families can watch the show together.

This morning I decided to give the premiere of WWE Saturday Morning Slam a whirl. Overall it wasn't bad but a few things will hopefully be tweaked in the future to make the show worth watching in the long run. It's obvious that the match (Santino VS Kofi Kingston) was recorded before Summer Slam, which would be fine if it wasn't for the fact that Santino still had the U.S. title. I fully expect every episode to be prerecorded but any match featured should fit within the continuity. The segments are very child-friendly and light-hearted. The show seems to take advantage of humanizing the heels. Daniel Bryan was shown in PSA segments. Cody Rhodes, Heath Slater, Natalya, The Miz, and Jack Swagger participate in a Olympics-centric Q&A. There are a few things that I personally think they may need to look into in the future in order to keep interest up.

1. The prerecorded, meaningless, matches should still fit within the storylines after Smackdown airs.
2. Given that RAW airs on Mondays and Smackdown is tapped on Tuesdays, perhaps recaps should be featured.
3. Maybe once a month or so, a main eventer should be put in a match against a mid/low carder.

Other than that, I think the show is about as good as we should expect. I'm not sure if anyone else checked it out but if so, what did you think? What did you like/dislike about WWE Saturday Morning Slam?

Its not just a good idea, its ingenious. Its the perfect wayto reel in more young fans, and I think its exactly what we need. I think the name is kind of cheesy, and goofy, but Kids will dig it. The logo is pretty cool, and it reminds me of the good old days for some reason.

while watching the first 10 minutes of this show only one thing was going through my mind *homosexualslurhomosexualslurhomosexualslurhomosexualslurhomosexualslur*

But the actual wrestling wasn't too bad. They already announced that Rey Mysterio would be on next week's show, hopefully in the match. In the coming weeks we could get top babyfaces like Cena, Sin Cara, ect. And have them going against up-and-coming heels. I'm guessing that the faces will ALWAYS WIN on a show like this, but it should still be entertaining for the kids. The first part was just horrid though. I don't care for learning how to dance like an idiot, I already know how to do that. And aren't the Funkadactyls outfits a little too PG? Gasp.;)
